From the Pastor

Peace be with you. It is summer and I will be taking time for vacation so our staff thought it would be helpful if I use these bulletin columns to speak to our parishioners in some depth about funerals. Often, we don’t think objectively about funerals. When someone dies, we reach out to figure out what to do, but it is an understandably emotional time and it is hard to concentrate and sometimes some things that are not allowed in the Church seems like a personal affront. As a simple example to this is when one of our dear parishioners died her family told us that her favorite song was “Imagine” by John Lennon and requested that this song be played at the funeral. Our liturgical rules made this an easy decision from the Church perspective but her family was initially surprised by our denying it. Thankfully, when we pointed out the line, “Imagine there’s no Heaven; and no religion too,” they understood but sometimes, in the emotion of the moment, it is difficult for families to be objective. So this column leads off a series on funerals and I hope that it causes some families to think ahead of time, and sparks conversations in your family, so that the planning of the funeral is easier.

1. First contact Usually the first contact is with the funeral director. We are quite fortunate in North Reading to have two excellent professional funeral homes. They are ready for your call even if it is in the middle of the night, but it is often helpful to give them a warning when death is imminent. Both of the funeral homes in our town are quite familiar with our routines and rules here at Saint Theresa Parish and they will contact us here for you to reserve the best time for the funeral. Once they call us and it is in the book, the family normally will get a call from our Pastoral Associate, Mary Ann Thomas. Mary Ann is there to express our sorrow for your loss and to make sure you know that she can answer your questions. Eventually, she will give you resources and speak to you about the readings for the Mass and your family’s participation: are their those that will lead, bring up the gifts, what songs do you want sung from our selection, will anyone be doing a eulogy? If you would like to meet personally with Mary Ann, she is certainly willing. We are working to have a back up for Mary Ann for times she is not available, but you can always call Fr. Reilly or me. Sometimes the family chooses not to have a funeral liturgy in the Church and chooses, instead, to have the ceremony in the funeral home. There are often good reasons for this but if you are sure that you want a funeral Mass when you die, please be very clear with your family and whomever is your executor. It is sad when clearly the one who died would like a funeral Mass but the remaining family bases their decision on their own preference. For the record, we in the parish prefer that you have a funeral liturgy here in the Church. As with all that these columns will speak about, having clear discussions with your family before you fall ill always makes it easier for the family to make the difficult decisions. Subsequent columns will deal with selecting music, what a eulogy is supposed to be, the issues around cremation and the proper disposition of the cremains, planning the wake, estate planning and wills if you want to have Masses celebrated or leave your parish a bequest, planning the “Month’s Mind” Mass, and, in general, what we can and cannot offer you here at Saint Theresa Parish. We hope you find these columns helpful. Blessings on you and your families, Bishop Mark

ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO… • Has expressed an interest in becoming

Catholic?

• Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. For information please contact our directors: Karen or Tony O’Brien at 617-257-3701 or email at: [email protected]; [email protected] The period of Inquiry begins on Thursday, September 19th at 7:00 pm in the Parish Center. There is no decision made at this time, it is a time to explore the faith and all it has to offer!

~ August 25 ~ Twenty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time

Isaiah is speaking on behalf of the Lord, directly to us: “…proclaim my glory among the nations.” This might seem like too much of a challenge. Take a few minutes to ask God to whom should you be proclaiming God’s glory? Is it a family member, a co-worker or a friend? Tell YOUR story of the importance of Jesus in your life. And, in case we think that task is for someone else, the Church in her wisdom reminds each one of us in today’s psalm refrain: “Go out to all the world and tell the good news!”
