Jung Foundation of New York is proud to sponsor a second educational tour of India in January 2007. This trip is an opportunity to see the South of India through the lens of analytical psychology, tracing the steps of C.G. Jung on his journey in the 1930’s. It will allow tour members to perceive the archetypal depths of life and psyche that Indians knew and expressed in their myth and art, and to understand how the experience and expression of these archetypal dimensions greatly influenced culture and civilization. We are honored to have once again as our guest lecturer Dr. Ashok Bedi. Ashok Bedi, M.D., is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst. Educated in India, Great Britain, and the United States, he is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Great Britain; Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin; and a senior member of the Milwaukee Psychiatric Physicians and a faculty member at the Analyst Training Program at the Carl G. Jung Institute of Chicago. He is presently helping several psychiatric groups in India establish the "India Jung Center" in affiliation with the International Association for Analytical Psychology. Trained in Medicine, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis in India, Great Britain and the US, he is interested in the emerging frontiers of Spirituality and Healing and the synapses of the Mind, Body, Soul and Spirit. He is author of the book, Path to the Soul, (Weiser Books, 2000), and the coauthor of Retire Your Family Karma, (Nicholas-Hays, Inc. 2003). MahabalipuramFamous for its 7th century Shore Temple that is a World Heritage Site, the citywas the second capital of the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram, located 58 km fromMadras on the Bay of Bengal. Tourists are drawn to this place by its miles ofunspoiled beach and rock-cut art. The sculpture of this place is particularlyinteresting, because it shows scenes of day-to-day life, in contrast to the rest ofthe state of Tamil Nadu, where carvings generally depict gods and goddesses.

January 8, 2007 ChennaiAfter breakfast and meeting with Dr. Bedi,visit the newly excavated Buddhist site, 20km from the city. Continue your visit of thesights of Chennai: St. Thome Cathedral,originally built in 1504 and rebuilt in 1893 issaid to house the remainder of St. Thomasthe Apostle, Fort St. George and theGovernment Museum, with its fine collectionof Chola bronzes.Return to the Taj Fisherman’s Cove hotel fordinner.

ChennaiChennai Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu is also its principal harbor and has oneof the finest beaches in Asia. It was founded at Fort St. George in 1640 AD byFrancis Day of the East India Company. It is the centre of the Hindu tradition of

Bharata Natyam (classical dancing), the art oftemple sculpture also comes from this part ofthe country, and gives expression to both thedevoutness and the artistic skills of the Tamilpeople. Madras is the home of the ancientDravidian civilization, one of the oldestarticulate cultures in the world.

This 2600 year old city is oftenreferred to as the Athens of the East, and is the oldest city in Tamil Nadu, bothhistorically and mythologically.The most famous of the temple towns of the south is known for the MeenakshiTemple. Famed for the many carved and painted halls, this magnificent templeof Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundaram (Shiva) has the tallest Gopuram(temple gateway) in the world. It also houses a Temple Art Museum and a 1000Pillared Hall.

Thisis the only sanctuary in India, where you canhave the unique experience of viewing wildlife atclose quarters from the safety of a boat on thelake. The greatest attraction of Periyar, however,is the herds of wild elephants that come down toplay in the lake.

Theresult of these cultural influences is seen in the many examples of Indo Europeanarchitecture that still exists here.

January 17, 2007 CochinAfter breakfast and the morning meeting, visit the Dutch Palace Museum, St.Francis Church and walk through the Jewish Town visiting the Synagogue.Bargain in the lovely antique shops in the old part of the town.At sunset, enjoy a cruise on Cochin Harbor, passing through Wellington Island,Bolgatty Islands, and fishing boats and ending up at the Chinese Fishing Nets.These huge cantilevered fishing nets are the legacy of one of the first visitors tothe Malabar Coast. Erected here between 1350 and 1450 AD by traders fromthe court of Kublai Khan, these nets are set up on teak wood and bamboo poles.Farewell dinner
