Where we come from!
Who we are!
Who we are!
Common Goals: Creating NEW
Services Together- ONE STOP SHOP
The Team Spirit Is Rewarding
Building Even StrongerConnections
Supportive Culture: The Open Door
“ I wish more time was spent on my strengths and
capabilities. As a refugee I became the focus of many services that focused on trauma in my life which I wish was more balanced to recognise my capacities to empower me to share my stories and to help me grow into leadership spaces”
“ They need to see beyond the trauma bring me into colour spaces so I can laugh, share my talents and skills, my culture to bring me hope.
Refugee Lived Experiences QUOTES
“Its now about today not the past”
“Its not about surviving now but thriving”
Move us from “Passive recipients to Active Community members”
“My full capacity is something that was destroyed because of resettlement but I have Capacity you are helping me restore it not buildon it!”
Focus on Nurturing & Enabling us
Has a Strength based focus
Is a value based approach that families are knowledgeable consumers and significant resources
OUR PART:
Help de mystifying processes (School & Community) and encouraging parents that they can move out of “victim” or passive roles and into responsive action
Create pyramids or webs of support by having parents mentor parents or to reach out to new parents i.e. bilingually can be done by creating bilingual engager positions. They can reach out in ways we can not
FINAL COMMENTS:
I believe the goal of family engagement is not to serve participants in your programs but to gain partners
Involving parents in leadership roles is a slow process that requires nurturing. Understanding that parents are all on different journeys, understanding there are phases parents will move into when they are ready i.e. from engagement to involvement to empowerment
Parent Leadership can be a process or path, but it is a destination as well.
In Summary - Parent Leadership
