Background Information..• Terrie Hall is a

spokesperson for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

• She started smoking when she was only in high school. Frequently, she would light up at least two packs of cigarettes a day.

• In 2001, at the age of 40, Terrie was diagnosed with oral cancer, which within time, it became throat cancer.

• Doctors were forced to remove her larynx and replace it with a electro- larynx.

Why is the font placed at the bottom of the image?

Font Size and Color: The

font is placed at the bottom of the image because it holds less importance than the subject, herself. It’s written in white and is slightly smaller , where it won’t draw as much attention.

What is the emphasis (focal point) in the picture?

• Focal Point: The emphasis in the picture is focused on Terri’s physical appearance and the questioning of why her finger is placed on her throat. The viewer is left in curiosity of the significance of her thumb position.

What if another person was placed in this image? Would it still have the same effect?

Detail: The company places Terri as the main focus because more viewers play attention to her because of her unique physical appearance. If another person was placed in the image, it wouldn’t have as great of effect. Viewers are curious and want to know more about her.

• The image is directed towards current smokers and possible teenage smokers. She is trying to

warn others about the possible effects of continued tobacco use. She wants them to

understand the consequences and what she has had to face.

What is the PATHOS (emotional appeal) in the image?

The emotional appeal makes the viewer feel sorrow and forces them to realize the possible

effects of tobacco usage. Her physical appearance draws in more of an audience

because she is not considered a “social norm.” The viewer feels empathy and places

themselves into her shoes, as a smoker who had to receive a tracheotomy.

activities. Human nature makes us not want to endure the consequences of what others

[Terri] has had to face because of decisions that could have been easily avoided based on
