Expedition with Jolliet In 1672, the governor of New France, (now Canada,) Frontenac chose Marquette and Jolliet to look for a new route to the Pacific Ocean. 1 year went by when they left for their journey. They took 5 men with them, along with 2 canoes and went down the Mississippi River, unknowingly. They stopped by some Native Americans, telling them they were going the wrong way. Then they turned around, and went back up the Mississippi River, back to where they started. Marquette’s health was dropping.
