NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Vanessa Aikins

Welcome to Term 2 and I hope you enjoyed the beautiful Autumn weather over the term break. We welcome several new families to the School this term and again I would like to thank the Parent Liaison’s for the very important role they play within the School helping to ensure all families feel a strong connection to the school.

I would like to thank those staff and families who gave their time on the first Satur-day of the term break to relocate the Infant Toddler Program and the Adolescent Programs Occupations groups into the house at the front of the Salvation Army Camp School site or Casa Baldivis as we now refer to this premises. I am delighted to now have Orla in a facility that she can set up beautifully and not have to pack and unpack each day. Thank you to those parents who helped support Asti Jorgen-son cover Orla whilst she was away from Playgroup in the last two weeks of term 1. The Casa Baldivis facility allows the Adolescent Program to also have dedicated workshop, garden and kitchen spaces thus providing them with a more secure site for storage of equipment and further development of these exciting curriculum areas.

On Friday 26th May the Upper Primary and Adolescent students attended our School’s ANZAC service. I would like to thank Jacob W for coordinating this event and also thank Venus for accompanying Pyper and Tara at the Rockingham ANZAC service where the girls laid a wreath from the School.

Over this coming term there will be several staffing alterations occurring within the Primary School classes. Ayesha is completing her final practicum for her Diploma of Education and Deb D will be attending her daughter’s wedding overseas. We thank Helen and Robyn Walker for filling these places. We also welcome Katherine and Jade from our Adolescent Program who are joining the Upper Primary class to de-liver opportunities in robotics, coding and extending the fitness program for this term.

To teach in Western Australian Schools you must be registered with the Teachers Registration Board (TRB). All Montessori teachers undertake extensive Montessori training and this is recognised in all countries around the world. The TRB however do not recognise this training and therefore Western Australian Montessori schools must have our teachers also complete either a Bachelor of Education or Diploma of Education plus their Montessori studies regardless of the length of teaching experi-ence in Montessori schools they have. Our School is dedicated to spreading Mon-tessori practices and I am delighted to inform over the past nine years our School has supported teacher training of fourteen staff members. Our School is recog-nised as a centre of excellence and we have gained accreditation through the Mon-tessori Australia Foundation Quality Assurance Program. We regularly provide practicum places for student teachers within the School and we frequently use our facilities to offer Montessori training for the Montessori Institute, Association Mon-tessori Internationale and Montessori Australia Foundation. I am very proud of the work that our teachers do on a daily basis to ensure our School maintains excellent standards and your children are provided with an extensive learning opportunity tailored to their individual needs.

Internships and Shadow Days

“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the en-hancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.” (Education and Peace)

Central to the internship is the belief that a student will get the most from an experience if they are pursuing their pas-sion in a hands-on experience.

A Learning Through Internship (LTI) experience, ideally, places an individual in a real workplace environment in the field of their passion, where they are able to establish a relationship with an adult, their mentor, who has the same interests and who works in that area. The individual is therefore provided with the opportunity to build skills that are relevant and real, while engaging in a project that gives back to the organisation via a project.

The mentor guides and coaches the student intern at the work site. The mentor becomes part of the student’s learning team, and should demonstrate a commitment to the student’s personal growth and workplace learning.

The project is ideally designed to be authentic, demonstrate academic rigor, allow for active exploration and the oppor-tunity to understand the adult connections.

We recognise that many students may not have a clear idea of what sort of internship they might want to pursue. We work closely with students at every step along the way from interest exploration to interview skills, to project develop-ment.

In practice an internship is never this neat and tidy. Every individual’s internship experience is different and often Shad-ow Days help us find the right placement.

A Shadow Day is a day spent with someone who works in an area of the student’s interest. It is a chance for them to learn more about their interests and what people do at a particular work site.

Parents play a vital role in supporting their child - please have conversations with your child about what their passions and interests are; maybe you have a connection that would make an amazing mentor. Or maybe your workplace has the capacity to take on an intern or provide a shadow experience.

We currently have students who are looking for experiences in the following fields:

museums art small business journalism psychology politics tattooing hospitality trains animal welfare information technology

If you have any questions or ideas, please do not hesitate to chat to your child’s advisor.

Infant Toddler Program

Welcome back to Term 2 and to our new premises at Casa Baldivis. We are very excited to have our own homely environment with plenty of different spaces to choose from. It was very exciting for us to dust down equipment that was in storage for many years and set it up for the children. The wooden see saw was an immediate attrac-tion last week. The new space opens up so many more possibilities to set up ongoing practical life experiences. We finally have windows to wash, tiles to sweep and warm running water for dishes!

Thank you Asti for running our group beautifully whilst I was away at the end of last term. Asti was assisted by four wonderful parent helpers Kelly, Pam, Sam and Tina. Thank you all so much, your help was greatly appreciat-ed.

Thank you to all the parent helpers who came along on the first Saturday of the holidays to move us from the Hall into Casa Baldivis. It was a big move and took many hours of hard work. Many hands make light work and thankfully we had so many helping hands. Thank you everyone, you are all fantastic helpers.

Thank you Martin for coming back (after already helping with the move) to cut tables to size and set up a new washing up, sand and laundry table. All are in full use now and bringing much joy.

Thank you Ronald from the Salvation Army for making this new space available for our School. We are delighted.

Education Department

News

The Australian Government Department of Education and Training is currently under-taking the 2017 Student Residential Address Collection. As a parent/guardian you do not need to provide any information directly to the department. The only thing you need to do is ensure your address details are up-to-date with our school. If you need to update your child’s/children’s residential address details, please contact [email protected] We will provide the department with de-identified address information for all of our students’ families. This means we will provide addresses but no student names. The Statement of Addresses notice which we recently sent to you provides more infor-mation. Frequently Asked Questions from parents: Why is the collection being done?

The department is collecting student residential addresses for all non-government schools. This is part of a routine process that occurs approxi-mately every four years, with the last collection undertaken in 2012. The col-lection is done in line with the Australian Bureau of Statistics Population and Housing Census. With the Census data being released later this year, it is timely for the department to update its data.

What do I need to do? Nothing! You don’t need to provide any information to the department – our school will do this on behalf of all of our students’ families. However, please make sure your address details are up-to-date with our school.

Is my personal information secure? Yes. The school provides the department with de-identified student residen-tial addresses. The department will not see personal information that identi-fies individual families.

Witches absolutely detest children. To a witch, a child smells like dogs' droppings. And now the Grand High Witch is planning to get rid of every child in England – can anybody stop them?

This is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL witches. Real witches don’t ride around on broomsticks. They don’t even wear black cloaks and hats. They are vile, cunning, detestable creatures who disguise them-selves as nice, ordinary ladies.

Audiences can expect a laugh-out-loud, edge-of-the-seat theatrical treat, with creepily good perfor-mances that will send shivers up their spines.

Whether you’ve read the book or seen the film and want to experience the show live on stage, or whether you've seen it before and want to recapture the magic, The Witches is set to bewitch you all.

The Witches will show on 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27 May at 7.30pm, and 20, 21 and 27 May at 2pm.

Tickets are now on sale and cost $25 standard, $23 concession and $18 children
