• A Taxonomy is a system of classification (organizing information) used to provide a framework for information retrieval (analysis) that separates elements into groups (taxon) that are mutually exclusive and unambiguous.

• This means that we define things in such a way that they only have one possible meaning and we group related items together in a hierarchical manner so that each level of the hierarchy describes one and only one type of item.
