PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Your hometown escrow company that shines above the rest!

Hope you all are having a great summer!

This has certainly been one of our busier summers here at the Whittier Chamber. We have so many great things happening, all of which are bringing us into the home stretch of summer with positive results and events. We successfully completed our 3rd Annual Shop Local Community Expo held at the Whittwood Town Center last month. This was an achievement beyond our

expectations as we had hundreds of representatives and local residents come to stroll the event and learn about our local businesses, while they enjoyed music, raffl e prize giveaways and tasty free food available to all. Take a look at this month’s centerfold for highlights from the event.

It’s now time to prepare for our upcoming Annual Hathaway Golf Classic to be held at Friendly Hills Country Club on Monday, September 8. Sponsorships are coming in, golfers are signing up and the Chamber staff and Hathaway committee are preparing for another spectacular golf event. The proceeds from this scramble tournament are delivered straight back into Chamber programs, seminars, information and resources to help our businesses succeed. This is one of our largest and

most celebrated events of the year, and now is the time to take advantage of the exceptional marketing benefi ts available at the tournament. The big golf ball drop is back again and is always a highlight of the afternoon. Not a golfer? Not a problem! Join us for the 19th Hole Mixer beginning at 4 p.m. for networking, prizes, awards and dinner.

We are thankful that this summer has been full of so many great opportunities to take advantage of like networking, gaining new leads and enjoying our community. It has also been a time to enjoy the beautiful California weather, our families and friends. I hope you’ve all enjoyed some of the lazy, hazy days of summer and are getting ready to gently transition into the fall season. Until next month… stay cool!

If you serve on the board of directors of one or more corporations, there are a number of tax rules of which you should be aware. In your role as a corporate director, you are considered to be an independent contractor, not an employee of the corporation. This fact has several important tax consequences, including the following:

Directors’ income and deductions. The fees that you receive as a corporate director are subject to current income taxation. However, because you are considered to be in the “business” of serving as a corporate director, you can deduct your ordinary and necessary expenses of carrying on this business. For example, you can deduct away-from-home travel expenses that relate to your duties as a director.

These are business expenses and not itemized deductions, so they aren’t subject to any limitations based on your income. However, if you are also an investor in the corporation, your

expenses may be treated as investment expenses rather than business expenses. In that case, they will be miscellaneous itemized deductions, and will only be deductible to the extent that they exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income.

Keogh retirement plans. You may be able to postpone paying tax on your directors’ fee income by making deductible contributions to a pension or profi t-sharing plan for self-employed individuals known as a Keogh plan. Deductible contributions of up to 20% of this income—up to a maximum of $52,000 in 2014—may be made to these types of Keogh plans.

Your participation in a Keogh plan would be in addition to any qualified pension and profi t-sharing plan in which you already participate as an employee. Participation in an employee plan wouldn’t limit the amount you could contribute and deduct under a Keogh plan.

Se l f -emp loyment tax . As an independent contractor, you will be subject to self-employment tax on your directors’ fee income. Self-employment tax is imposed in addition to income tax, but you can deduct half of your self-employment tax as an adjustment to income.

Self-employment tax consists of a Social Security portion and a Medicare portion. The Social Security tax is imposed at 12.4%, but only on self-employment income up to a certain amount. For 2014, it applies to the fi rst $117,000 of self-employment income. However, if you have salary income of at least $117,000, you won’t be liable

for Social Security tax on your directors’ fees.

The Medicare tax is imposed at 2.9% on all of your self-employment income, whether or not you also have salary income. An additional 0.9% Medicare tax (for a total of 3.8%) is imposed on self-employment income in excess of $250,000 for joint returns; $125,000 for married taxpayers filing separate returns; and $200,000 in all other cases.

Trust fund penalty. Corporate directors should bear in mind their potential exposure to liability for the trust fund recovery penalty. “Trust fund” taxes include withheld income tax and Social Security tax that the corporation deducts from employees’ wages and pays over to the government. When these taxes aren’t properly collected and paid over, the persons responsible for collection and payment are liable for 100% of the shortfall. Obviously, the amount of this penalty can add up very quickly.

C o r p o r a t e d i r e c t o r s a r e n ’ t automatically liable for the trust fund penalty if taxes aren’t paid. The critical issue is who had the authority and the duty to see to it that the trust fund taxes were paid. However, there have been cases in which directors were held liable for the penalty, so this possibility shouldn’t be ignored.

If you have any questions regarding the above discussed topic or any other tax matter, please feel free to give me a call at (562) 698-9891.

The Whittier City Council would like to thank Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon, who partnered with the American Red Cross and the California Earthquake Authority to host an Emergency Preparedness Town Hall meeting last month at the Uptown Senior Center. Those of us here during the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake know all too well the importance of being prepared. We learned that disasters and emergencies can occur at any moment; however, by being prepared we can better ensure we survive and recover quickly. Thanks again to Assemblymember Calderon and the Red Cross for this important reminder on being prepared for emergencies

At the annual State of the City event hosted by the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, we were pleased to provide information on the many development projects underway. We welcome a number of new retailers and restaurants coming to Whittier such as Buffalo Wild Wings at the Whittwood Town Center, Dunkin’ Donuts at the former Arby’s site, the rapidly moving LA Fitness at the former Chrysler Jeep dealer site, Corner Bakery Café, Popeye’s Chicken, and Pieology. In addition to the commercial projects, there are a few housing developments in the planning stages throughout the city, including Oakmont Senior Living Facility at the former Harris Buick Pontiac GMC site on Whittier Boulevard. As City Manager Jeff Collier mentioned at the State of the City address, “Let’s make some dust!”

In other economic development news, the Fred C. Nelles site draft environmental impact report (EIR) is expected to be available by the end of the month. The community will

have an opportunity to review and comment specifi cally on the potential environmental impacts before the fi nal EIR is completed. Public hearings will be held by the Historic Resources Commission, Planning Commission, and City Council this coming fall to provide the community an opportunity to comment on the project as a whole. Brookfi eld Homes has submitted plans for a mixed-use development to include up to 750 homes and approximately 200,000 square feet of commercial development. The Council is pleased with the progress at the Fred C. Nelles site as it will provide a new major development project on the west side of town.

Many of our residents have enjoyed great entertainment at the Summer Concerts in the Park that end mid-month. The Concerts are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays at Central Park and Thursdays at Parnell Park through August 14th. Visit the city website at www.cityofwhittier.org or call 567-9430 for the concert schedule.

Congratulations to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for another successful Shop Local Showcase last month at the Whittwood Town Center. The dedication and hard work of the Chamber staff, Board of Directors and the many businesses that participated are greatly appreciated. The Local Showcase is a fun and valuable event for the entire community that serves as a reminder to shop Whittier fi rst. Please keep in mind that sales tax generated in Whittier stays in the city, with 1% of all sales tax going directly into the city’s General Fund. This money helps fund public safety, community services, street maintenance, and other important services. For example, if you take your children shopping for back to school clothes and spend $500, the city’s General Fund will receive $5 which can help fund summer programs for youth at our local parks. Please consider shopping Whittier as you prepare for the back to school shopping season.

Back to school time is exciting for many people, from kindergarteners to college students, as well as parents and school staff. Back to school time is also an exciting time for criminals who exploit unsuspecting victims as streets fi ll up with students carrying valuables, and school parking lots fi ll up with vehicles. The following list contains various tips on making your school year a safe one:

• Be sure your child knows his or her home phone number (including area code) address, your work number, the number of another trusted adult, and how to use 911 for emergencies.

• Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop. Choose the most direct way with the fewest street crossings. Test the route with your child. Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots, fields, and other places where there aren’t many people around.

• Teach chi ldren - whether walking, biking, or riding the bus to school - to obey all traffi c signals, signs, traffi c offi cers. Remind them to be extra careful in rainy weather.

• Make sure they walk to and from school with others - a friend, neighbor, brother, sister.

• When car pooling, drop off and pick up children as close to school as possible. Don’t leave until they have entered the school yard or building. Parents please follow all school valet drop off and pick up plans.

• Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers. Remember, a

stranger is anyone you or your children don’t know well or don’t trust.

• If your child is home alone for a few hours after school:◊ Set up rules for locking doors

and windows, and answering the door or telephone.

◊ Talk about what activities your child can and cannot do while home alone.

◊ Make sure he or she checks in with you or a neighbor immediately after school.

◊ Agree on rules for inviting friends over and for going to a friend’s house when no adult is home.

• Take time to listen carefully to children’s fears and feelings about people or places that scare them or make them feel uneasy. Tell them to trust their instincts. Take complaints about bullies and other concerns seriously.

• Teach your kids to stay alert when they walk to and from school. This means refraining from listening to music in both ears and always watching for suspicious persons or vehicles.

• If you choose to send your kids to school with valuables such as Ipods, Ipads, laptops, smartphones, or expensive jewelry, ask them to keep the items hidden in a backpack as they travel to and from school. They should also keep a close eye on their property throughout the day.

• If you park your vehicle at school, make sure the alarm is on, all doors are locked, and all valuables are removed from plain view.

Summer school biology students at La Serna High School are taking their lessons outside this year as they enjoyed the school’s new Outdoor Environmental Education Center (OEEC) that features a wide variety of plants, animals and ecosystems to study.

The OEEC is a football-fi eld sized facility near the school’s tennis courts that was created by La Serna High School students, said biology teacher Veronica Morales.

During the last two years, the students have transformed a dilapidated greenhouse and the spaces that surround it into a vibrant place for hands-on learning, she said. Students are learning urban gardening techniques by building and maintaining 18 raised planters with edible plants such as carrots, artichokes, beets, chili peppers, lavender, potatoes, herbs, sweet peas, leeks, onions and squash. But it’s about far more than growing plants, Morales said.

“Students built the OEEC to be a place of ongoing research and a resource for all science classes,” Morales said. “It is an actively growing lab and it will be useful now, especially as we undertake the new Common Core science standards.”

F o r e x a m p l e , b i o l o g y a n d environmental science students conducted extensive labs and research including worm farms that they used to learn about symbiotic relationships. They also grew and studied bacteria and fungi. And by raising chickens, the

students learned about integrated pest management for their agriculture work. Biome boxes allow students to study specifi c species of plants and animals.

During the last three weeks of school, the college prep biology class built a pond in order to study aquatic ecosystems. And students are hoping to create a butterfl y pavilion with 1,000 plants to assist the Monarch butterfl ies that are declining in numbers due to pesticides and the loss of their habitat.

Students were creative about repurposing items around campus for the center and raised money for the project throughout the school year. They and their parents volunteered many hours of their time to the project. The students also received donations of plants and supplies from a variety of businesses and organizations including Sylmar High School, Fresh and Easy and Cliff Bar.

But retired teacher David Karp has gone above and beyond by donating planting beds, soil, worms, and information as a volunteer expert gardener.

After learning how to conduct laboratory experiments in their center and do technical writing to document their conclusions, students said they were well-prepared for their Advanced Placement tests that are now requiring students to demonstrate their knowledge by analyzing data on the spot.

“During the test, I was able to recall what I had learned in the fi eld and apply what I had learned,” said Gillian Plant, a La Serna senior. “What we learn at the OEEC is much more comprehensive and goes way beyond what we can learn from our textbooks alone.”

Students assist in caring for the chickens that live in La Serna’s OEEC

B2B Design understands that the power of vision is vitally important in everyday life. They believe your home and workspace should refl ect who you are and what you stand for. Once they understand your needs and vision, they have the ability to design, build and make it happen with a mission statement that provides confi dence in all aspects of the business: to design and build. Not just new, sustainable, beautifully remodeled open spaces, but strong, genuine relationships with their clients, partners, employees, subcontractors and manufacturers. With core values like honesty, integrity and transparency, B2B Design without a doubt shows these qualities through their prideful work ethic. Their openness to design and sustainability is seen through their professionalism and attention to detail. Developing a continuous learning environment while promoting health and wellness between family and the local community is something they are always striving for. With a basic overall client base of residential, businesses, facilities managers, property managers, architects, designers, and commercial property; these qualities are essential to everyday operations and serve as a stepping stone to understanding the needs of their clients.

ResidentialThey can redesign k i tchens,

bathrooms or entire homes while improving comfort and effi ciency with new insulation, increased ventilation, solar powered attic fans, exterior wall vents, ceiling fans or whole house fans, Low-E windows and doors, Energy Star Roofs and UV refl ective cool roof coatings, new bathroom vents (to avoid mold), and skylights and Solatubes for day-lighting. They can also introduce tab water drinking fi lters, effi cient plumbing fi xtures and more.

Create an outdoor living space with a new stained redwood deck and an overhang trellis or gazebo. With concrete pavers, a fi re pit, a gas BBQ, an outdoor dining/lounge area, and drought resistant California native plants abound, there will be little need to go inside for anything. B2B will replace, prime and paint all exterior dryrot and termite damaged wood including siding, fascia boards, eaves, gates & fences or stain them new. They can introduce seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts that lead to an Oak Rain Water Harvest Barrel which will collect rain water every winter, as well as other effi cient and beautifully responsible features.

and transparency to your clients and offer comfort to your employees.

B2B works closely with small businesses seeking to communicate and connect non-verbally with their clients through effi cient, sustainable design and construction. Create workspace that is inviting, collaborative and conducive to the exchange of ideas, brainstorming and problem solving. Walls are movable, glass, wood or panel, white board marker writing opportunities and chalk board walls abound. Private conference rooms slide effortlessly into a large workspace with movable partitions that slide on or tuck into walls. For privacy concerns, B2B can build individual offi ces along back walls while the mid common areas are lined with long benches, standing work areas and (home-like) lounge areas.

Architects/Designers

B2B also works closely with architects and designers to manifest vision and design. They can custom build anything drawn using wood, steel, aluminum, glass, rod-iron, copper, slate, granite, clay, concrete. Whether it is furniture, cabinets, countertops, lighting, built-ins, facades, paneling, doors, gates, fences, decks, arches; if you can imagine it, they can build and install it! They can help architects problem solve and tailor their vision to meet client’s needs, merging imagination into production. B2B builds to exceed building code, manufacturer specifi cations and expectations.

Facilities/Property Managers

When looking to transition your portfolio of conventional offi ce suites into open, collaborative workspaces, B2B can help. They remove walls and ceilings exposing and updating electrical and plumbing, introduce new headers, open doorways and narrow hallways, and tailor each space with bright earth tones introducing natural, modern lighting for increased productivity. With 40 years of combined commercial construction and remodeling, B2B shoulders your efforts and care for your deferred maintenance and necessary repairs. They also perform commercial energy audits and propose solutions to reduce operating costs and improve effi ciency.

Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements?According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the ProAdjuster and is the latest, state-of-the-art technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.”The ProAdjuster can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulder and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance companies including medicare.Dr. Yani says that “The secret to the ProAdjuster lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of

people who never get to experience the amazing benefi ts of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be wary. The ProAdjuster is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefi ts and if you have any of the following conditions, the ProAdjuster may be the answer you’ve been looking for...

"I thought living in pain was a way of life. I was taking 600 mg of Motrin 2x/day because my tailbone was so painful I could not sit. I had to lay in backseat of Jeep coming home from vacation. I went to Friends Chiropractic as a skeptic, and now I am a true believer. By the 4th visit I was becoming a new person and stopped taking Motrin by day 5. Now I can sit for dinner, I can sit through church, I CAN SIT in the front seat of my Jeep! Dr. Yani is top notch. She listens and answers questions, never ever rushes through anyone. Her staff is friendly and very professional. I'm so grateful I found them. Thank you Dr. Yani for my treatments and Isabel for being so organized. I highly recommend ProAdjuster treatments to anyone sick and tired of living in pain!” ~Jessica Moreno

marketing opportunities to grow your business!

Dear friends and business partners, On the day of our ribbon cutting ceremony, I was asked by several people, “How

is your offi ce different from other real estate companies?” First off, we are blessed to have so many great real estate companies in our

community that are run and operated by brokers that are my friends and people I highly respect, and we do provide many of the same services.

The meaning of Sharpstone is exactly what it implies: we are sharp and rock solid. Sharp stands for focus, consistency, professionalism, confi dence and positive attitude. Stone stands for integrity, unity, agreement and creating a solid foundation. These are the core values that our family inherited from my parents and grandparents.

Our company principles are God, family and community. Our company is independent and family owned, not a franchise. My main focus as a broker, along with my staff, is to represent our clients with outstanding personal service, to go above and beyond the standards to achieve their goals and dreams, and to treat every client as a person and not just another transaction.

I highly value my agents and I will make sure they are professional, knowledgeable, ethical, consistent and maintain a positive attitude. My company has three categories for our agents: the new licensee starts as an Executive, then they excel to Gold, and fi nally become Diamonds. To make sure our agents are successful, I personally teach them and make sure they have access to up-to-date training and tools for developing strong skills and the knowledge necessary to not only succeed, but to thrive in any market. I provide them with the support they need to stay motivated, happy and consistent.

I am excited, energized, and confi dent that our company, although small, is mighty. We will represent our people and community well; I believe in God and with God everything is possible. Thank you for your continued support and friendly referrals. We look forward to serving you soon!

The Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce is truly the best! 10+ years ago I decided to entertain the idea of fi nding out why people make a fuss about chambers of commerce… It took me a while to fi t in, but I kept coming and meeting

new people that are now an amazing part of my life. They allow me to lift them up and encourage me to grow; even colleagues in the same profession look out for and help each other. Whittier folks, especially our chamber members, ambassadors, board members and residents in the community, are so loyal to one another. Thank you to all who have made my move to Whittier such a blessing! Helping others grow their businesses has been a delightful part of my life and, in return, I am keeping busy each day too!
