Mike claims under halfexpenses allowance

GATES FOR GEORGE STREET COMMUNITY

The Daily Telegraph havedescribed Portsmouth South MP,Mike Hancock as a “saint”; oneof only 50 MPs who didn’t abusethe expenses system.

As Mike only shares a small flat in London, his claim was in the bottom 60 of all MPswith constituencies outside the capital. In2007/2008, Mike claimed £10,839 forthe second home allowance – under halfthe maximum and considerably less thanany neighbouring MP.

Mike has never “flipped” his designatedsecond home.

The Conservative MPs for Gosport, EastHampshire and Havant for example eachclaimed more than double Mike at or justslightly below the maximum – withclaims of £23,083, £23,077 and £22,899respectively.

Mike said: “Unfortunately the systemhas become a mess and all MPs shareresponsibility for that.“It must be sorted out as a priority. Thereare issues over providingaccommodation in London for MPs butthat could be done by providingaccommodation blocks for them and Isupport that.“I also support Nick Clegg’s 100 dayplan to reform our politics - which wecould do over the summer.”“And I am determined to keep onworking on the important things for localpeople. I am continuing to campaign fora better deal for council tenants fromcentral Government. I want more helpfor small businesses locally and localpeople to combat the recession.”

“And I also want a strengthenedmaritime bill to improve our coastline.”
