$160m SA conference boostSOUTH Australias tourismminister Leon Bignell has hailed

Its good news for the state

centre redevelopment having
reached a key phase with the
installaon of the highest part of
the steel structure.
During the next three years,
on current bookings alone,
55,000 people will visit the
Adelaide Convenon Centre
from interstate and overseas,
generang 180,000 bed nights forthe hotel industry, Bignell said.
The upgraded Adelaide
Convenon Centre, along with
other work being done along the
Riverbank precinct, is making
Adelaide a more appealing
conference and convenon
desnaon, he added.

AS an industry we are no
strangers to air travel, however
the glamour of aircrew jobs
and keeping us safe can be a
mystery.Such as how tall do you need
to be a ight aendant?
You dont necessarily need to
be 160cm, but you do need to
be able to reach to 208cm.
Good looks wont go astray
but a good personality, ashing
a sincere, genuine smile and
a willingness to help others is
what counts.
Forget buddying up, ight crew
y with dierent colleagues on
each ight, on dierent aircratypes and conguraons a
crew posion system monitors
previous ying record and
assigns posions.
A tad o-pung is the
necessity to clean the toilets
in-ight (thank goodness)
to make sure they are clean
for passengers, including for
themselves.
Since the humidity level inside
the aircra is low, skin tends to
get dry, so plenty of aenon isneeded to moisturising.
While it varies from airline to
airline, on many internaonal
carriers the cabin crew and the
rst ocer eat the same meal
and the captain a dierent one
in case of food poisoning.
When it comes to protecng
the aircra from lightning,
weather radar and ying around
storms is primarily used.
The circular shape and the
conducve nature of the
fuselage means that the planes
body becomes a Faraday cage,
which allows energy from the
lightning to ow around the
plane, thus protecng the
people inside.

The scale of the refurbishment

One of the things that many

the work that goes into logiscswhen making these kind of

everything is harder and there
is the extra costs of freight and
of course, pung up the various

So long, farewell and amen!A PLETHORAof new, innovativeevent technologies are enteringthe scene, making event plannersmore ecient by streamlining
their tasks, bringing added valueto participants and saving costs. Virtual and hybrid events are oneof these emerging technologiesand Gen Y (18-32) has beeninstrumental in driving theiruptake.
Why? Because theyre allonline and its where they go forknowledge and learning.
Theyre already watching hoursof online video footage and usingsocial media to network.
Therefore, it makes total sense
for you to live-stream valuablecontent from your events, extending its reach and making itaccessible to an unlimited local orworldwide audience. In the old days, the old werewiser and the young learnt fromtheir elders.
What were seeing now has beenturned upside down.
The old are learning from theyoung, simply because their wayof learning and networking isso much smarter, more ecientand in line with the digital worldaround us.
Indeed, in several universities inthe USA they have introduced theipped classroom.
Students dont come to the
classroom for a lecture and thenget sent home to do homework.
They are asked to learn thebasics and theory of a subject
online and then come to class todiscuss it, understand the practiceand gain context. Other key benets of virtualand hybrid events are the hugepotential cost savings andextended life of content whenrecorded, the content can bestored and archived for futureviewing.
Associations too, many ofwhom struggle to attract new, younger members, are utilisingthe technology to give Gen Y a
glimpse and insight into theirorganisation, which then providesthe motivation for them to join.
GENerating ChangeDirector of Conference Focus, Max Turpin is sharing his insights on arange of topics with a regular column in BEN.
Topics will include new generation events and making eventseective and valuable. This is the nal in a series of articlesdiscussing the changes taking place inevents, where Max will explain thesetransformations, whats driving themand what it means to you.
