Function

The nervous system is one of the most complicated systems of the body. Along with the endocrine system, it controls man bodily activities. The nervous system senses changes in both the internal and external environments, interprets these changes, and then coordinates appropriate responses that are designed to maintain homeostasis.


Diseases and Conditions of the Nervous System

Meningitis - inflammation of the meninges Encephalopathy - disease of the brain Migraine headache -The most common type of vascular

cerebrospinal fluid within the cranial cavity


Encephalitis - inflammation of the brainConcussion - injury to the brain caused

Cerebral Palsy - A disability disorder resulting from damage to the brain before or during birth

Epilepsy - A disorder of the brain that results in recurrent, unprovoked seizures

Parkinson’s disease - a group of conditions called motor system disorders. It affects various parts of the body, causing stiffness in the muscles, slowness, difficulty when starting movements and tremor


Hallucination - A sensory experience in which a person can see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something that isn’t there

Lethargy - tired Syncope - fainting Coma - Deep unconsciousness Narcolepsy - A sleep disorder marked by sudden, uncontrollable urges to sleep Anxiety - A feeling of apprehension, often characterized by feelings of stress.

Delirium - craze: state of violent mental agitation; a usually brief state of excitement and mental confusion often accompanied by hallucinations


Psychosis - Any major mental disorder that involves change of personality and loss of contact with reality

Schizophrenia - A psychotic disorder characterized in the active phase by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thoughts/speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and apathy

Paranoia - an irrational fear, suspicion, or distrust of others Phobia - fear of


Autism - is disorder which usually appears within the first three years of life and may result in learning difficulties, speech problems and difficulty relating to people

Alzheimer’s - a progressive form of pre-senile dementia

Kleptomania - an irresistible impulse to steal in the absence of any economic motive

Dyslexia - Learning disability affecting reading ability. Persons with dyslexia may have difficulty remembering, recognizing, and or reversing written letters, numbers, and words, might read backwards, and have poor handwriting.

Myelography - process of recording the spinal cord.


LUMBAR PUNCTURE- Needle puncture into the spinal cavity to extract spinalfluid. (CSF)
