It is hard to believe that it is the last week of term. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe and happy holiday and thank everyone who has contributed to the many events within the school this term. Band Camp Last weekend we had our annual Band Camp. The students ar- rived on Friday night for a short rehearsal and then spent most of the day Saturday with their band tutors practicing and performing. The day concluded with a games afternoon of archery, volleyball and indoor activities. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with the camp and helped with supervision on Friday and Satur- day night. It was a lot of fun for all and a great success. Thank you to Ms Fisk and Ms Hall for their organisation of the camp and to Mrs O’Grady and Ms Hall who slept over at the camp as well. It is wonderful to see the improvement in all our band members with commendation to Ben Dickson and Misa Yamamoto our band conductors for their excellent tuition and commitment to both our senior and junior bands. Stage 3 Camp - Canberra and the Snow This week our year 5 & 6 students went to Canberra and the snow on their annual school camp. Mr Dylan, Ms Phillips, Mr Fisk and myself all attended the camp and were ex- tremely impressed with the behaviour of our senior students. We visited various Canberra attractions in- cluding the High Court, Questacon, old and new Parliament House and the War Memorial. Every student participated in the exhibitions with enthusiasm and many of the public including the bus drivers were very impressed with their manners and out- standing behaviour. All the teachers were very proud of our stu- dents. Lots of information was learnt to support their democracy studies and once again the Manly Vale students and teachers were there to witness another change in Prime Ministers. (We have been there for the last 2-3 changes). Thank you to Mrs O’Grady for filling in as principal for these days as I really enjoyed having time with the students. “Sound of Music” Stars Two of our students Matilda Graham (2M) and Alexander Ulitzka (5D) auditioned for parts in the upcoming musical “Sound of Mu- sic”. With up to 2000 children auditioning these students man- aged to get down to the final few for the roles of Gretel and Kurt in the musical. Such a fantastic achievement for them both. Congratulations! “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” Stars Congratulations to all our talented students who will be perform- ing in the musical “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” at Glen Street The- atre 18-26 September. Congratulations! A must see for the holi- days. School Holidays Please keep an eye on our lovely school over the holidays and feel free to ring School Security on 1300880021 if you see any- thing suspicious. School will resume for all students on Tuesday 6 October after the long weekend. Planned School Development Revised Timeline Last Friday we held an Information booth on the new school development at Café Owl. Many parents visited the booth and requested some information on the proposed timeline for devel- opment. Due to the delay in the Development Application pro- cess currently with Warringah Council the new timeline is as follows. Construction is proposed to be carried out in two stages in or- der for the school to remain operational onsite, and to minimise school disruption and ensure the ongoing safety of students. Stage One will include the construction of a new Hall, Canteen, Library, Lift, Toilets and a two storey, 24 classroom building whilst maintaining the existing school population in their present accommodation. This work will take place mainly within the present, fenced off area at the rear of the school site, separate from the school’s operation. On completion of Stage One, the school will relocate into the new buildings, in order to vacate the present timber classrooms before their demolition and to allow the removal of the existing demountable buildings. Stage Two will include the remaining construction of a new two storey, 16 classroom building and completion of all landscaping and playground areas. Construction will continue to be separate from the school’s operation. Stage One was forecast for com- pletion before the start of the 2017 school year, but due to delay in the DA process this will now be later in 2017. Manly Vale Public School - New School Development Last week Stewart Davies and myself met with the Department of Education’s project team to talk about the current status of the project and issues raised by a local group regarding the design of the new school and impact on the Manly Warringah Memorial Park and bushland. The project is currently caught up in the DA approval process. The project was presented to the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) as part of the DA assessment process on 25 August 2015. Council did not support the project at the JRPP meeting because of the impact on the surrounding bushland, that being the Rural Fire Ser-vice (RFS) requirement for an Asset Protection Zone (APZ). The APZ is an area of bushland that is selectively cleared to provide bushfire protection to the new school but still maintains growth cor-ridors for local fauna. Many of their concerns have already been addressed by specialist consultants in the Council application; however the Council main-tains their objection to the school redevelopment. The project team will continue meeting with Council and local groups after seeking further expert advice, in an attempt to alleviate their concerns. The current preferred design has been a result of a 12 month consulta-tion process with the Project Reference Group (PRG) and many other external stakeholders to provide the best outcome for stu-dents and community. This process included endorsement from the Local Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group among others. Manly Vale Public School requires more classrooms and space to cater for the continuing growth of the community. Any school rede-velopment on the site, regardless of the location, will require an Asset Protection Zone (APZ) according to the bushfire regulations. With any design the APZ cannot be maintained on our site and there will need to be selective maintained clearing into the adjoining bush land. The current design allows for the Manly Vale Public School students to engage with the bushland which is presently under utilised due to safety restrictions. The current fences will be removed and classrooms will be situated on the upper knoll allow-ing students greater access to the bushland. The position of the pond area will be relocated to a more sustainable natural setting at the north west of the school as a permanent learning resource. The grassed area and games court at the front of the school will be retained for school and free community access on weekends. We look forward to continuing our strong environmental focus at the school by embracing the bush and allowing our students and families to actively engage in it. Tina Lee Principal
