This term we have been focussing on being resilient, both in our learning and in general day to day life events. Some of the exam- ples we have explored have been sports people who have over- come obstacles and achieved greatness and successful business people who have worked hard to build a company from nothing. At BHS we truly believe one of the keys to success is resilience and the ability to bend, not break. Year 10 have commenced, with eagerness, preparations for their first GCSE exam in May. All of year 10 will sit a GCSE in Statistics which will be excellent preparation for their Mathematics exam next year. We wish them all the very best of luck. Message from the Head Teacher

Dear Parents, carers and friends of Burnley High School,

As we approach the Easter holidays, it is always a pleasure to take time to reflect on the terms many successes.

This term we have been focussing on being resilient, both in our learning and in general day to day life events. Some of the exam-ples we have explored have been sports people who have over-come obstacles and achieved greatness and successful business people who have worked hard to build a company from nothing.

Miss Campbell is busily preparing for our Year 6 transition to commence . Some of our fabulous students will be selected to be-come mentors for our year 6 students and help with the prepara-tions for the up and coming transition days and be excellent role models for our incoming students.

The Drama team have been working incredibly hard with rehears-als for the Summer show, Grease. We hope you will join us in sup-porting the cast and crew in the summer term show.

Our congratulations go to Miss Cross-Costello who has been suc-cessfully appointed as our new Head of Year 8/9 and Miss Jawaid who has been successfully appointed as our Gifted and Able and Information and Guidance Co0ordinator.

Finally I would like to thank our parents, carers and families for your continued support and the staff who work tirelessly to pro-vide the very best care and education for our students. I wish you a restful holiday period and I look forward to welcoming you at one of our events in the up coming term.

“In our school, we don’t do easy, we make easy happen through hard work , engagement, resilience and learning’

The unique Expeditionary Learning model at BHS has undergone some

refinement and development over the course of the last two terms, pri-

marily in response to student and staff feedback. Where once, Expedi-

tions were taught in groups of 45 students with 2 members of staff, we

have now moved to a model where each member of staff teaches 20-25

students in their own classroom, their own subject area, yet with a very

strong focus on the ‘expeditionary strand’ that ties all of the subject are-

as together. Where appropriate we still start the expeditions with a

‘WOW moment’ and try to end with a public exhibition of some kind.

Although the logistics of the teaching delivery have changed, the essence

and philosophy of connecting strands between subjects and drawing on

these crossover elements is still as strong as ever in order to enhance

retention across the curriculum. If you have any questions or would like

to learn more about our expeditions, please contact Mr Jeal on either

the enquiries email or on the main reception number.

LEARNING UPDATE

On 11th February, 39 of our Y9 and 10 stu-dents travelled to Disneyland Paris. De-spite the long coach journey, students were very well behaved and excellent am-bassadors of our school. We arrived at Disneyland and had some time shopping in the Disney Village. We attended Maths seminars and learned about how Disney finances their park, designs and builds rollercoasters and how they balance cus-tomer satisfaction with ensuring the park is profitable. We spent a full day in the two Disneyland parks, and were all very excited to see the Magic Kingdom castle. Students experienced rides such as ‘RockNRolla’, ‘Tower of Terror’ and ‘Space Mountain’. We practised our

French in the shops and cafes and even experienced an amazing fireworks dis-play. Students were an absolute credit to the school and a thoroughly enjoyable time

CALLING ALL

FRIENDS OF BHS...

As a rapidly growing, developing school, it

can often be the case that staff get caught

up in the day to day running and life of the

school and aren't always available to touch

base with our parents, carers and families

as often as we would like. Mrs Di Michele,

who is also one of our parents as well as a

valued member of staff, is setting up a par-

ent committee so that we can hopefully see

our families a little more often.

If you would like to be part of the commit-

tee please contact Mrs Di Michele on en-

Shoes not trainers

Hair tied back with a black or purple bobble, no garish hair colours

Rucksack or other school bag, no handbags

Pencil case with the minimum of pen, pencil, ruler and school calculator

No make up

WORLD BOOK DAY 2018

The Beast from the East didn't stop Burnley High School students celebrating World Book Day and we held a belated event on the 7th March. Students across all year groups made an amazing effort to celebrate the day with some impressive fancy dress ideas. There has to be special mentions to the win-ners of each year group, Phoebe Moore, Mudasar Ali Tahir, Olivia Smith and, we can't forget our very own Professor Snape, Mr Jeal! Some students also embraced their inner Mary Berry, baking book-themed cakes and cupcakes. They all looked fantas-tic and were certainly 'Bake Off' worthy. Another special mention needs to be given to Oliver Massey for his Harry Potter cake. We can't wait for 2019 already!
