Welcome from the Editor

We are coming to the end of our year as Most Enterprising Area in the

UK, and what a year it’s been, with national campaigns, ministerial and royal visits, business park launches, trade missions showcasing Burnley’s offer, all of which have generated positive press coverage and real investment leads.

The Business Secretary Vince Cable officially opened the Burnley Bridge Business Park and visited several successful businesses, he was so impressed by what he saw he said “if every other part of Britain was like Burnley we wouldn’t be talking about a recession”; The Sunday Times reported Burnley is a ‘first time buyers Shangri-la’; The Minister of State for Business and Energy said Burnley is “leading the way” at our London Showcase event; HRH The Duke of York opened the University Technical College and praised the superb education and training facilities; global aerospace giants Kaman Aero Systems opened their UK Centre of Tooling Excellence, Kaman Tooling, on Burnley’s Innovation Drive; TRW were awarded the Global Quality Award the highest award for excellence across the worldwide group; Trebor Developments were selected as development partner for the Knowledge Park in Burnley’s Knowledge

Quarter; Barnfield Construction are well underway with the OnTheBanks mixed use development transforming the Weavers’ Triangle; The Woodland Spa won the Day Spa of the Year Award; a hugely successful Doing Business in Burnley event took place with over 130 businesses attending; an impressive list, which wouldn’t be complete without adding the achievement of our proud football team taking Burnley into the premiership – an amazing year for everyone in Burnley – a premiership town and a premiership team.

People are saying there is a real ‘buzz’ around Burnley, so much is happening and there is such a positive vibe running through the town, and we intend to build on this. The MEA award helped put us firmly on the map, but we aren’t resting on our laurels we are working even harder to build on this success and transform Burnley’s economic future.

The stats are already reflecting our success with impressive national figures putting Burnley 10th in the UK for private sector growth this year.

We are open for business and we invite you to be part of the success.

The VEKA UK Group was delighted to welcome Vince Cable back to the company’s Burnley HQ to officially open the PVC-U system supplier’s impressive, new mixing plant.

The Business Secretary enjoyed a tour of the Farrington Road site with the UK Company Directors and Global VEKA Group Board Member Boni Eichwald, who had travelled from Germany to attend the opening of the state-of-the-art mixing plant, which has seen investment of £5m.

Mr Cable said it was a pleasure to be back at VEKA celebrating further success with the company.

Before unveiling a commemorative plaque of the official opening, he discussed the scale of the development and described it as “a European success story” which will strengthen trading relationships across the UK and abroad.

The VEKA UK Group’s new facility is now the most technically-advanced PVC-U mixing plant in the UK. It has been designed with future expansion in mind, which could potentially take capacity from the current 48,000 tonnes to a possible 72,000 tonnes.

The VEKA UK Group Managing Director Dave Jones explains: “The Group’s capital expenditure over the last two years totals more than £15m. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the future of our industry in the UK, and the success we want for our customers. The new mixing plant will allow The VEKA UK Group to become even bigger and stronger over the coming years, and allows us to offer even better service and stability for our customers.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the Business Secretary back to the site to see the finished plant following his visit to Burnley last year. We really feel that our investment in this facility represents another success story for Burnley and the UK manufacturing industry overall.”

Top bosses from TRW Automotive, a global leader in the automotive sector, flew from Germany to the UK last month and travelled to Burnley to present TRW Burnley with the highest award for excellence across the worldwide TRW group.

Burnley’s plant beat off competition from over 12 worldwide plants in the Body Controls Systems Division, including sister plants in the Czech Republic and Mexico, to secure the top award.

The Global Quality Award was presented to Burnley’s Operations Director, John Kennedy, at a special event held at the Eastern Avenue plant to unveil the Quality Tower!

The award was presented by Mr Ralf Jeskulke, Vice President of TRW Global Control Systems and Mr Krzystof Janiga, the Group Global Quality Director.

Mr Janiga gave a short presentation on the critical importance of quality to the future of the business and in particular to drive continuous improvement in all areas of customer and consumer satisfaction.

Receiving the award, Mr Kennedy said: “This is something Burnley can be really proud of. Last year we were awarded the Global award for Health & Safety and Environmental Excellence with the most consistent performance of any of the 185

TRW Plants worldwide, and this year’s award recognises our excellence in quality, reflecting an excellence across all our disciplines.

“We are now in Gold Medal place for Quality across the 12 plants in our group covering almost $1 billion of sales. This award was achieved by each and every employee, but we will not be complacent, we will strive to stay at the front of the pack. Let the others come after us … we welcome the chase.”

Adding: “This is a proud day in the history of Burnley’s TRW plant, formerly known as Lucas Electrical. The Global Quality Award reflects the best performing business related to product and service, calculated on a multi-faceted scoring system covering audits of lean manufacturing and quality systems, product warranty performance, quality concerns raised and defective parts per million supplied; and I’d like to thank all my staff for their quality work which has secured us this award.”

Prior to the award unveiling, staff and leaders attended a presentation at the magnificant Towneley Hall where the Vice President, Mr Jeskulke, presented the vision and strategy for TRW’s Global Control & Body Systems business and the important role the Burnley plant plays in that vision.

Phase III Public Square, Public Realm and Highway Improvements are underway in the Weavers’ Triangle ‘On the Banks’.

The third phase of works transforming the Weavers’ Triangle ‘On the Banks’ will include; a £1.3 million public square at Sandygate and a £2 million highway and public realm improvement scheme, to create a welcoming gateway and new public spaces.

The high quality public realm and highway works will enhance the huge investment underway by Barnfield Investment Properties Limited to transform the Weavers’ Triangle into a vibrant and unique ‘destination’ for business, living, leisure and education, by creating an impressive public square, distinctive public areas, and improvements to traffic and pedestrian flow around the area.

Priority for pedestrian access into and

around the Weavers’ Triangle from the town centre and the new Manchester Road Station will be created by providing wider pavements and a new modern footbridge across the canal.

Partners Burnley Council, Barnfield Construction and Lancashire County Council will be delivering the works, with Barnfield transforming Sandygate Square and the county council delivering the highway and public realm works. The works are being funded from the Regional Growth Fund, European Regional Development Fund and Lancashire County Council.

The public realm works will create a contemporary feel in and around the Weavers’ Triangle with granite pavements, street furniture and feature lighting along Trafalgar Street. The highway improvements will greatly improve the traffic flow around the Weavers’ Triangle.

Council Leader, Mark Townsend said:

“High quality public realm works are proven to have wider economic value, including raised demand for land and buildings in the area, increased property values and the attraction of more investment and visitors. The aim of the overall scheme is to attract new investment, jobs and visitors to the ‘On the Banks’ development, and the public realm works will create distinctive public spaces for people to enjoy.

“Our ambition to create welcoming gateways into Burnley is becoming a reality. The Knowledge Quarter Princess Way gateway is a wonderful example of what can be achieved and the council will continue working in partnership with the private sector to transform Burnley and its prospects for economic growth.”

County Councillor John Fillis, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “Towns and cities are changing, and with the era of out of town commercial centres and the internet we need to create places that people want to visit, to enjoy their leisure time in an environment that is welcoming, distinctive and interesting.

“The county council is committed to improving the competitiveness of Lancashire’s towns and cities and has been working closely with Burnley to deliver projects that will bring considerable economic benefits to the town, helping to attract new business and jobs, as well as improving the look of the area overall.”

Gareth Smith, Project Director for the scheme on behalf of Barnfield said: “We are very pleased at the progress that has been made by all partners. The infrastructure in and around the On the Banks development is of paramount importance and whilst delivering key assets is of primary importance we cannot forget the role that good public realm and infrastructure has to play.

“The development shows how true collaborative working can really benefit and bring forward socio and economic benefits for businesses and residents alike.”

£3.3 million Gateway Transformation

Sandygate Square will become the centrepiece of the On the Banks development and will include:

• an impressive new footbridge over the canal creating a pedestrian gateway to the developments around Sandygate Square and the new University Technical College

Burnley’s University Technical College (UTC), providing young people with vital engineering and construction skills, was officially opened by HRH The Duke of York, KG in March.

HRH toured the UTC, meeting staff and learners before unveiling a plaque to mark the opening and being presented with a set of brass golf tees made by the learners in the engineering workshop at the UTC.

In a speech to guests, The Duke said: “The project here at University Technical College is providing the young people with excellent education and training.

“I think the opportunities that the young students have here are outstanding and I would encourage more people to go out to talk to friends and colleagues and suggest this as a new learning avenue for them. I would also encourage parents to research the opportunities for students here at the UTC and to come and see in action what is going on.

“The other thing that is important for prospective students and parents to realise

that the college delivers a number of different pathways to, not only life in the wider world, but also to university.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to everyone who has been behind the project, in government, in the local authority and in the private sector, for bringing the whole idea together and actually

showing what can be done. “I’m absolutely awe inspired

by what I have seen today, and wish everyone every success in various endeavours not just here but as you move on into the wider world and I reckon you are going to have a serious advantage over many of your colleagues who haven’t had this learning opportunity.”

The Duke met learners working on projects demonstrating 3D printing, joinery, precision engineering,

and a miniature Formula 1 race track with model cars made by the learners, which he enjoyed immensely. The Duke was presented with a set of golf tees made by the learners in the engineering workshop.

Elliott Sutcliffe aged 17, was among those involved in the visit, said: “I really enjoy being at the UTC. It has given

me a fantastic opportunity that I would never have had in my previous school, such as working alongside employers who have given me real insight into the world of work. I like the fact that that we are treated in an adult manner and encouraged to take responsibility for ourselves. It’s also a good thing that we work an extended day to give us more opportunities to do different things.

Martin Callagher, Managing Director of the UTC said; “We

are grateful to Prince Andrew for taking the time to come here today to mark this occasion and delighted he has been able to join us. The Duke is a great ambassador for enterprise-focussed education and will be a great promoter of the opportunities we offer.

Council Leader, Mark Townsend said; “Our ambition is to make Burnley a regionally significant centre for advanced manufacturing and engineering excellence, and to achieve this it is important we provide the opportunities for our younger generation to gain the skills needed to grow these sectors and create jobs for the future and the superb facilities in the new UTC in Burnley will do just that.

“These are exciting times for Burnley and I’m delighted His Royal Highness officially opened this fantastic new learning facility for us.

“Burnley has a strong manufacturing base making parts for the world’s largest aircraft and fastest cars and with the skills and infrastructure in place we plan to substantially grow this sector.”

Burnley College and Themis are taking progressive action to address the local skills shortages within Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing.

The College is expanding its existing Centre of Engineering Excellence and Construction Learning and Training Centre in a significant growth project which will see a +95% increased site space.

The build is a significant investment from the College to support Advanced Manufacturing employers and an opportunity to put Pennine Lancashire at the forefront of industry innovation and development.

The aim of the facility is to

address the skills shortages by providing industry specific, advanced training, developed in parallel with the rapid pace of technological development within Advanced Manufacturing. Burnley College and Themis have seen year-on-year increased demand for engineering learning and training as employers struggle to fill the gaps in their existing workforce and the requirement for new, skilled recruits.

Local employers have been instrumental in the project’s development and continue to consult with the College as the development takes shape. This partnership has ensured the build is suitably equipped

for employer needs in a rapidly developing modern workplace. Local employers have advised the College on sourcing specialist equipment essential to the ongoing relevance and effectiveness of the training provided.

Kris Mercer from Darwen based WEC Group says: “The expansion of the Centre of Engineering Excellence will give our Apprentices the opportunity to train with the latest engineering technology. This will stand the College as one of the finest engineering training facilities in the UK”.

The Centre is set to include a host of new industry advanced

manufacturing equipment, including 3D printing and ‘Faro Arm’ with laser line scanning. The development will also include new workshops and training zones, a state of the art CAD/CAM drawing suite, a composite materials clean-room, aircraft fitting and sheet-metal sections and a viewing gallery.

The College expects the expansion to significantly increase all arms of its training and development division including Apprenticeships, further education, university learning and industry training.

The multi-million pound investment is due for completion in September 2014.

Inspiring the workforce of the futureBurnley businesses came out in force to support the annual Work Inspiration event earlier this year. 650 Burnley school children and around 35 local businesses attended a huge skills based careers event hosted by Burnley College.

Burnley College played host to a huge event that once again brought together hundreds of local year 9 and 10 school students and dozens of local businesses in a repeat of the inspirational skills based careers event dubbed ‘Work Inspiration’.

The event focuses on improving children’s career aspirations by giving them hands on experience of a range of jobs and industry sectors by local businesses from sectors such as Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, Construction and Sustainability, Creative and Digital Media, Retail and Leisure, Business and Professional Services and Public Sector.

The event is a spin-off of the Work Inspiration campaign which is promoted by Business in the Community (BITC). The aim of BITC’s campaign is to give young people an inspiring first taste of work – work inspiration, rather than work experience!

Pupils could try their hand at everything from rummaging through rubbish to catch a fly-tipping culprit, recording a radio drama,

trying on police riot gear, looking at live parasites through a microscope, practising chest compressions on a dummy, assembling a section of an aircraft nacelle, plumbing and joinery tasks, taking part in a press conference and experiencing how a child develops pencil control.

Once again this is a truly collaborative event, with the planning team made up

of Business in the Community, Burnley Borough Council, Burnley College, Aircelle, and STEMFirst. Not to mention the 35+ businesses inspiring our youngsters about the vast range of jobs

available locally. This was about giving young people the

opportunity to find out more about a range of possible careers in a practical way, by having a go at things rather than sitting in a classroom. It really engaged with the young people in a direct way.

Commenting on the event, Clare Hutchinson, NW Regional Education Manager at BITC said “This is such an exciting event to be involved in – hearing the buzz of young people engaging with local businesses, asking questions, getting involved in practical tasks, finding out about what they do – it’s a really important step in helping them make decisions about their future and we’re extremely grateful to all of the exhibitors for

the time, effort and creativity they put into the event to make it fun and informative”.

Helen Gopsill, HR Director at Aircelle, said, “I’m especially pleased that Work Inspiration is establishing itself and that so many businesses are taking part again – it provides a broad perspective of what is on offer for young people in Burnley. I’d love to see it becoming sustainable and taking place every year”.

Careers Coordinator, Carol Embley from Shuttleworth College said, “On behalf of Shuttleworth College staff and students can I give a HUGE THANK YOU to you all for a wonderful informative event. Our students said they really enjoyed it and have now different ideas for their career pathways and option choices, proving that all your hard work has a positive and meaningful impact on students”.

local businesses, asking questions, getting involved in practical tasks,

finding out about what they do – it’s a really important step in

Burnley student is ‘star of the show’ in LondonLeading members of the business

and education world were captivated by Hameldon Community College Student, Keaton Newcombe Dickson at a prestigious London-based business event.

Keaton was invited to speak at Business in the Community’s National Business Class Symposium at Goldman Sachs in London following his outstanding performance in a local business/education initiative run by VEKA and its Business Class partner school Hameldon Community College.

A number of mini apprenticeships were created at VEKA, job adverts were written and students were invited to apply formally for the roles. Interviews were then carried out and five students selected for the respective roles. Over the course of the following six weeks, students carried out their apprenticeship projects and ended with a judged presentation.

VEKA’s Head of HR, Gabriela Hammond said: “All the students that took part were a credit to the school, they learnt so much from the project, from what to put in a CV, to interview practice and what happens in a business environment.

“Keaton worked in the Finance Team and stood out throughout the programme. Everyone here at VEKA was delighted when he was asked to attend the symposium, we knew he would shine but even we had no idea just how much! Being there on the day to watch him interact with such esteemed guests was brilliant to see. We’re very proud of him.

“The Symposium brought together 280 delegates from business and school clusters across the country to celebrate the powerful difference that Business Class is bringing to young people. Among those present were John Cridland Director General of the CBI, and Lord Nash Under Secretary of State for

Schools and Co CEO of Goldman Sachs, who all declared Keaton as the highlight of the day.

“Burnley was already at the forefront of Business Class, being the first ever cluster of businesses and schools in the UK, but is now even better recognised thanks to Keaton!”

Clare Hutchinson, North West Regional Education Manager for Business in the Community added: “One of the key themes for the Business Class programme is to help young people to build successful working lives through engagement with businesses whilst they are at school. Not only did the Mini Apprenticeship programme with VEKA fulfil this goal, but Keaton proved himself to be a young person that any business would be proud to employ, judging by the number of senior business leaders who wanted to shake his hand and introduce themselves to him during the break!”

Leading online fashion firm to double its growth in BurnleyA top online fashion retailer could be set to bring 350 new jobs to Burnley under multi-million pound expansion plans.

Boohoo.com bosses want to double the size of their Burnley headquarters with a £5m. new extension at Heasandford Industrial Estate. The booming fashion firm already employs more than 400 staff in the town at the existing warehouse and distribution centre on Widow Hill Road. But the huge expansion

proposals could mean hundreds of new jobs created in the town if plans are given the green light.

Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle, who recently toured Boohoo’s Burnley base with bosses, believes it would be a huge boost to the local economy.

He said: “It is brilliant news for Burnley. It is a major investment in the town. The firm came to Burnley five years ago with just 40 staff and now they employ around 425 people.

“By 2015 they want to more than double their workforce to more than 1,000 staff. The bosses say the workforce in Burnley is superb, committed and work hard – they run two shifts seven days a week. They are really happy with what is going on in Burnley – they are phenomenally busy. It is a real success story in the town.”

The 12,379sqm extension would see a four-storey amenity block, service yard and a new distribution warehouse for the

growing online retail business. A full planning application has been submitted to Burnley Council and if granted the site could be open by the middle of next year.

A statement from developers said: “The site’s development will make a valuable contribution to the economy of the borough. The proposed development, once fully operational will add a further circa 350 jobs to the local economy. The proposal is needed in order to support the growing online retail business.”

Themis at Burnley College Awarded ‘2014 Apprenticeship Provider of the Year. Themis, the Apprenticeship

The inaugural National awards ceremony took place in London during National Apprenticeship Week, following the Apprenticeships 4 England Voice of Apprenticeships Conference.

The Apprenticeships 4 England Awards recognise the significant contribution made by Training providers and Colleges in supporting and delivering

apprenticeships in England.A significant number of

entries were received for the awards, in which applicants were asked to demonstrate several core competencies in their entries including: • The approach taken by their

organisation in the delivery of Apprenticeships

• What focus was given to the learner during the apprenticeship

• The contribution and partnerships developed in conjunction with employers

• The contribution made to the wider community

The Judges were particularly impressed with Themis due to its high caliber of training programmes and growth within key sectors including engineering.

Angela Jones, Head of Themis said: “To be announced as the National Apprenticeship Provider of the Year is an amazing achievement and a great start to what looks to be another very successful year.”

“The demand for apprenticeships in Pennine Lancashire has increased in recent years as a growing number of employers see it as a highly valuable way to recruit future

talent. Many young people now see apprenticeships as a really attractive career path”.

“We are extremely proud of our work with our Apprentices and employers and thank the Apprenticeships 4 England panel for recognising this. Behind each Apprentice success is a solid and supportive partnership between the Apprentice, their employer and the Themis team. We always seek to provide the best training and development experience to all members of this partnership and proudly celebrate the achievement of their success”.

Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League is worth tens of millions of pounds to the local economy

Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League is worth millions of pounds to the local economy say commercial and political leaders.

Business leaders say the town’s profile will soar as big matches are beamed around the world, with financial experts Deloitte estimating promotion to the world’s richest league being worth £120 million to the football club with the town’s businesses set to reap the rewards.

Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow said: “There is definitely a link between the town’s fortunes and the club’s success. It is a massive achievement for the club and what it means in pounds and pence for Burnley you can’t say exactly, but it’s probably worth tens of millions.

“Burnley will be televised to millions of people around the world which will help get our name recognised for all the

right reasons, and you just can’t buy that coverage.

“From the manager to the players, the boardroom to the fans, Burnley Football Club are the borough’s heroes and I want to pass on my congratulations.

“Now that Burnley is back in the Premiership, once again the entire world will be watching as teams from arguably the world’s best league come to Burnley to take on the Clarets.

“We’re back in the Premiership, we’re the Most Enterprising Place in the UK and we’ll showcase our pride, entrepreneurial spirit, and winning formula.

“The promotion will have so many benefits, from raising aspirations and pride, to encouraging sport and healthy activities, on top of the huge boost it will bring Burnley’s economy.”

That was the view at Insider's Doing Business in Burnley breakfast, which attracted a bumper crowd of 120 people.

Burnley’s promotion to the top tier of English football is worth an estimated £120m to the football club but businesses in the town have been urged to take advantage of the increased exposure it will generate.

Neil Hart, head of community at Burnley FC in the Community, said: "The promotion celebration is over. The focus now is on planning for the Premier League. The vision of the club is we want as many local businesses to join us on this journey."

Burnley was recently awarded the title of 'Most Enterprising Area in Britain' and Steve Rumbelow, Chief Executive of Burnley Council said “It is the latest in a long list of great news story for Burnley”.

"The attention that the town is getting is positive," he said. "We're getting a lot of interest from businesses outside the town. Although we're a manufacturing town there's a diversity of businesses here."

Tim Webber is the Chairman and Managing Director of Barnfield Construction Group which employs 250 people and has a turnover of £60m. He said: "We have been around for 37 years. In our sector the mood is very buoyant. By May we had a full order book until the end of the year.

"We've had five or six years of recession and people now feel confident about bringing these projects forward. Burnley winning the title of 'Most Enterprising Area in Britain' and promotion to the Premier League has created a real feel-good factor."

David Grant is the Managing Director of Moorhouse's Brewery, which marks its 150th anniversary in Burnley in 2015. It employs 32 staff and has a turnover of £5.5m.

"There's a feel-good factor around although it's too early to talk about a full recovery," he said. He also welcomed HS2: "I think it's great. We're regularly in London and the quicker I can get there the better. I think the image of Burnley and Pennine Lancashire is improving tremendously. It's a ripple effect. There's still work to be done."

AMS Neve produce digital and analogue mixing desks that have been used in Hollywood blockbusters like Harry Potter. Founder Mark Crabtree said: "Around 85 per cent of what we do goes to export. Being in Burnley is no obstacle. A lot of our customers are also in London."

David Jones is the Managing Director, VEKA, whose Burnley operation turns over £68m and employs 340 staff. He said: "We supply the building industry so in 2008 we lost 35 staff and all the management took a 20 per cent pay cut just to keep the business going. When the market improved we ended up taking 19 of those workers back on. Burnley is on the up and up."

The event was run in association with Burnley Borough Council and was sponsored by Barnfield Construction; HSBC Bank; Petty Chartered Surveyors; and commercial law firm Taylors.

Businesses in Burnley have said they are well placed to benefit from the higher profile that Burnley FC’s promotion to the Premier League will bring.

Sunday Times says Burnley is a first time buyer’s Shangri-laSunday Times Journalist, Francesca Angelini, visited Burnley recently to see what the town could offer young couples and singletons and she was pleasantly surprised by what she found.

She headed north from London to investigate affordable housing for young people, particularly singletons, following figures which showed that in more than 80% of the country single people under 30 earning an average income are priced out of buying a first home. She was drawn to Burnley as here 39% of properties are affordable for singles and young couples and wanted to investigate what the town could offer.

Francesca investigated some refurbished terraced houses and new build starter homes and was amazed at how much you could get for your money, and the lifestyle offer here in Burnley.

Her piece concluded that Burnley could offer good employment opportunities in the growing aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors, not just in engineering, but all the support jobs within company’s HR, public relations and marketing, sales, accounting, training etc.

“It is clear that the town has potential” said Francesca. “While

I don’t have a manufacturing background I could perhaps get a job as a press officer at Aircelle or Rolls Royce, or I could work for the BBC in Salford Quays and commute by car, a journey that takes 36 minutes.

“That’s the house and the job sorted then, but what would life be like in Burnley? There are several nightclubs and bars, for edgier entertainment I can catch the bus to Manchester. One place I could see myself hanging out is the Woodland Spa in Crow Wood, a chichi yet affordable complex in the greenbelt surrounding the town.

“Then there’s canal boating, parks to explore, beautiful surrounding countryside for walking, horse riding and more extreme sports and some fairly good shopping, so it’s looking good.

“The best thing about the place is the people: they are friendly, they talk to each other and make eye contact, and don’t rush about in an anxious flurry.”

Francesca signed off by saying ‘Wish you were here…” and whilst she’s not looking to move out of London just yet she would seriously consider the lifestyle offer here in the future and tell her friends about the town – our best keep secrets are getting out!.

Sector Special : Additive Manufacturing

FDM Digital Solution’s at the forefront of innovation in additive manufacturing

James Saunders and Graeme Bond, owners of Burnley’s new high tech, additive manufacturing company, FDM Digital Solutions Ltd, are adding to Burnley’s reputation as the UK’s enterprise hot spot.

Sector Special : Additive Manufacturing

Strategically and operationally, FDM are able to deliver comprehensive services tailored to clients’ unique

requirements. Customers include a range of business

sectors: the automotive industry and contrasting customers in the medical, architecture, aerospace, nuclear and general engineering markets.

This exciting design company provides innovative products and specialist services. Their industrial scale, 3D printing services, facilitates the manufacture of rapid prototyping of end user production parts.

As a digitally connected company, FDM provides convenient and confidential in-house services to support UK manufacturing with:

• 3D rapid prototyping

• In-house or mobile 3D scanning service

• An online Bureau service which enables clients to upload a CAD design file for conversion into a 3D object

• Create soluble core structures for use in complex carbon fibre part manufacture.

They support clients who require a very quick and efficient turnaround to enable their projects to be completed within their deadlines.

James and Graeme help reduce time to market and product development costs.

3D printing is the process that uses fuse deposit modelling to enable an object to be created layer by layer replicating a CAD design exactly.

FDM Digital Solutions can take a clients CAD design file and manufacture a prototype or end user part to the exact dimensions of the original file.

Unlike SLA or SLS that use resins, FDM uses real production-grade thermoplastics, which are the same high-performance raw materials used in most injection moulding technologies.

Using these materials FDM’s additive manufacturing achieves a higher degree of build accuracy, durability and repeatability.

This technique enables clients to practically explore and successfully deliver complex and innovative design ideas that would otherwise be to expensive or even impossible to execute using conventional manufacturing methods.

Sector Special : Additive Manufacturing

FDM is pioneering the use of 3D printing to produce made-to-measure insoles for the NHS and has secured a £860,000 investment from The North West Fund for Venture Capital and Lancashire’s Rosebud Fund.

Using the system being developed by FDM Digital Solutions, hospitals will be able to scan a patient’s foot shape and email it to the company, which will then print and deliver insoles to the exact specification within as little as 48 hours. The process will replace the traditional hand-made techniques and could revolutionise the way the NHS buys orthotics and other products.

FDM, together with its partners East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Salford, have already won grants totalling almost £1m from the Technology Strategy Board and EPSRC to help them develop the supply chain. This latest funding will enable the company to invest in the latest 3D technology to allow it to fulfil future orders.

Using 3D printing – or additive manufacturing as it is also known – objects are created layer by layer to

replicate an exact design. In addition to its work in the medical sector, FDM Digital manufactures components for the aerospace, engineering, automotive and motor sports industries.

In addition to its work in the medical sector, FDM Digital manufactures prototypes, jigs, fixtures and end use parts for industries such as aerospace, engineering, automotive and motor sports using soluble core technology. It also offers 3D scanning and reverse engineering services.

The company was established in 2011 by James Saunders, who has a background in operations management within the advanced materials sector, and

Graeme Bond, who has over 10 years’ experience of 3D print techniques.

Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Fund has provided £172,000 while The North West Fund for Venture Capital has invested £688,000. Both funds are managed by Enterprise Ventures. The North West Fund for Venture Capital is part of The £155m North West Fund and is financed jointly by the European Regional Development Fund and the European

Saunders, Managing

Director of FDM Digital, said: “This new system could

improve quality and reduce consultants’ time. It’s great that Rosebud and The North West Fund for Venture Capital have seen its potential and are backing our vision. 3D printing could transform supply chains in the NHS and other industries. We will become the leading centre of excellence for this new technology in the North West.”

Doug Stellman of Enterprise Ventures said: “3D printing allows a radically different approach to manufacturing as can be seen from the healthy order flow being generated from their existing customer base. The technology that FDM is now proposing for orthotics allows the shape and properties of the materials be varied to match the patient’s exact needs, as well as pioneering a new lean supply chain model which can be applied throughout the NHS.“

Feature : Architectural Lighting

Tucked away on one of Burnley’s largest and most established business parks, alongside global giants

Veka and Pipeline Induction Heat, is the Headquarters of a rather modest but very successful lighting company, LITE Ltd , who although they’re in the business of lighting, don’t particularly like putting themselves in the spotlight! Even though they are on their way to becoming one of the UK’s leading architectural lighting design companies and rapidly expanding into global markets.

LITE works with some of the UK’s, and more recently, some of the world’s leading lighting design consultants on prominent buildings and landmarks, bringing them to life at night with creative architectural lighting displays.

Some of the UK’s key landmarks The Shard, Edinburgh Castle, The Lowry, Leeds Arena, the Millenium bridges in both Salford and York, to name but a few, shine proudly at night with LITE’s lighting systems, boosting tourism through creative lighting.

LITE have been specialising in the design and manufacture of specialist commercial colour-change lighting systems since

2008 and have recently patented a unique controllable sealed two-wired LED festoon lighting system which can be programmed with a variety of data to create amazing lighting effects and light shows which can change the mood, atmosphere and tempo.

In- house programme writers pre-write lighting programmes which can be controlled from their headquarters or by staff at the buildings where the architectural lighting has been installed. Programmes can be changed in real time, controlling what colour is to be displayed in each fitting,

telling each light to be what colour and how long to stay on, creating amazing lighting displays.

LITE employs highly skilled programme writing technicians who create the impressive lighting displays requested by

lighting designers. Steve Hainsworth, LITE’s Managing

Director said: “We’ve developed and patented a unique programmable lighting system, a specially sealed LED festoon, with a data line that is programmable over two wires, and we have written a special language ‘Maxi Link’ that talks to the lights and creates the individual displays. There is really nothing else like it in the world.

“We’ve designed and manufactured a 24V low energy, low maintenance, high brightness, long life, IP68 festoon

lighting system for the architectural and decorative LED lighting market, which we believe is unrivalled in the industry.

“We are very excited about LITE’s future, we’ve started talking to companies across Europe, in the USA, the Middle East and Africa, and are in talks with a

leading global leisure brand, but can’t say who at the moment – watch this space as they say!”

“Our background lies in Christmas lighting and we still specialise in commercial Christmas lighting displays for towns and

Burnley ‘leading way’ on economy says business

ministerDelegation flies flag for Burnley businesses

Burnley’s business and political leaders embarked on a ‘trade mission’ to London earlier this year in a bid to attract further investment.

A delegation, including representatives from almost 30 employers from the borough, met Business Minister Michael Fallon at a private event in Westminster.

The networking event was held at The Royal Society’s headquarters in Carlton House Terrace, in the shadow of Buckingham Palace.

It was attended by numerous business leaders from the capital and Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive of the Centre for Cities think tank.

Big name firms such as AMS Neve, VEKA and BCW Engineering

were all present at the event, which was hosted by BBC’s The One Show reporter, Tony Livesey.

Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow said: “It was about promoting Burnley and Lancashire to ministers and shareholders that we don’t normally see up north.

“With the support of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Marketing Lancashire, we structured it like the Prime Minister would for a trade mission abroad. The leader and deputy leader of the council were here along with around 30 businesses, all talking to people. We discussed the enterprise award but it was more about progress and opportunities to invest.

It has a proactive and supportive business environment, a good infrastructure and highly skilled workforce.

“I think that Burnley is leading the way, where more businesses are being created than are closing down.

“In the 3 years since the beginning of the financial crisis private sector employment in Burnley has risen while it has declined elsewhere in Great Britain. I believe this is a result of the type of partnership and private sector leadership which we see here today, which is essential to driving growth in our local economies.

“I wanted to be here on behalf of the Department for Business Innovation & Skills and on behalf of Her Majesty’s government to pay tribute to Burnley’s achievements and ambition. Burnley is a championship town that was once and we hope will again be in the premiership!”

Mr Fallon opened the Invest in Burnley event which was held at The Royal Society Headquarters, located in the heart of Westminster. The event was organised by the Burnley Bondholders, Marketing Lancashire and the Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership, to attract further investment to Burnley and Lancashire. He paid tribute to the Burnley Bondholder scheme for its work in securing Burnley the title of Most Enterprising Area in the UK.

Edwin Booth, Chair of Lancashire’s Local Enterprise Partnership said: “Burnley is key to the thrust of a thriving Lancashire. It has produced some tremendous businesses in advanced engineering and manufacturing. It has a tremendous reputation for getting things done through the quality relationship between the public and private sector. Burnley sits at one end of an arc of innovation in Lancashire.”

Former Council Leader, Julie Cooper said; “Our aim is to get Burnley noticed in the right places. We have development sites to rival those of the big cities and this event was a fantastic opportunity

to showcase our economic growth opportunities to intermediaries who influence major business decisions.”

Council Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow, said: “The event has generated interest in Burnley which we hope we can turn into real investment. The key, following the event, is to get on the phones to the people we met yesterday to reinforce our message that Burnley is the place to invest.

“We aren’t resting on our laurels following our Most Enterprising Area Award, and events such as this will help spread the word that Burnley is open for business and a place where businesses

can confidently invest. “Things have already started to move

with a key leisure investor who attended the event, planning to come to Burnley and see what we have to offer, and we hope there will be many more taking up the invitation to come and take a look for themselves.”

“The key thing is that from here we get on the phones and move forwards by convincing the people that Burnley is the place to invest.”

Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive, Centre for Cities, speaking at Burnley Showcase in London, April 2014

Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive, Centre for Cities, another key speaker at the event presented statistics which put Burnley 10th out of the whole of the UK for creating private sector jobs.

“This is an enormous achievement. An impressive statistic and a real achievement to be up there in the top ten based on national data.”

Alex talked about how skills were vastly important to Burnley’s growth and praised Burnley’s investment in education and skills, through the new UCFB, UTC, and the Burnley College and UCLan Campus.

Alex also highlighted the importance of connections, emphasising the value of Burnley’s new rail link to Manchester as definitely being the right thing for the town and its future growth. She commented on the incredible quality of life in Burnley and the opportunities which will be opened up to commute to Manchester from Burnley, confirming the town will benefit enormously from the direct rail link.

Some of the biggest names in real estate and business investment attended the early evening event, including GVA, Morgan Tucker, Barratt London, UKTI, Clifford Chance, DHL, to hear about the transformations underway in Burnley and the range of investment opportunities available in the borough.

Being from Burnley, I’m not surprised that Burnley has won the most enterprising place award for the whole of Britain. It’s always felt to me that it’s a place that is full of energy, passion, authenticity and grit, and it’s great to be here in Media City, plugging into that energy. I got a real sense of community growing up in Burnley, there is a very strong sense of collective spirit, which is what we’ve tried to create here at Media City. That spirit of community is something I learnt when I lived in Burnley. It’s great having Burnley and Lancashire on our doorstep, because it’s a beautiful place, an enterprising place, an increasingly ambitious place. It’s young, with lots of young fresh talent; it’s really cost effective and cheaper to do business around here, lots of variety with a price you can afford. Burnley helped shape my life and my career and I love getting behind the place and supporting it.

The Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnership was formed 3 years ago, a partnership between the public and private sector, to enable businesses throughout Lancashire to thrive. Burnley is key to this thrust and looking back through history it has some tremendous businesses in the textiles, manufacturing and advanced engineering industries.

Burnley has a tremendous reputation for getting things done and this has been possible through the quality of the relationship between the private and public sector. Lancashire is currently working on its growth deal with government and through this there will be even further infrastructure benefit and support to Burnley and the surrounding area. The relationship between Burnley and the Lancashire LEP is a particularly important one, as Burnley in East Lancashire sits at one end of an arc of innovation which runs from Lancaster, through the Fylde and Preston across to the East.

Another thing that really excites me about Burnley is the way in which Innovation Drive has been born out of the former Michelin site within the period of a year.

It would be easy to say the Enterprise Zones are very much the crown of Lancashire but the jewels very much lie in Burnley, the town that has been cited as the most enterprising in the most enterprising place in the UK.

Burnley is a great place to live, where else can you finish work, climb a mountain and drink of pint of witches brew on the way home.

In Burnley you have the advantage of a large cluster of aerospace, manufacturing and support businesses – so you’re in good company. We can complete on a level playing field with anywhere else in the world from Burnley and get there quickly from Manchester Airport. I’ve run my business for 33 years in Burnley, very happily and successfully, with highly skilled employees. The MEA award is making people sit up and take notice, wanting to see what we’ve got, and you should do too. So far it’s been a well-kept secret, but I think the word’s getting out!

We’ve been established for over 30 years, predominantly doing work throughout East Lancashire. It gives me great pride and pleasure to be working on some of the iconic buildings that we have in East Lancashire and to make them fit for purpose within the 21st century. The future is looking tremendously bright for Burnley and for the schemes we are working on. The two schemes we are most proud of in Burnley are the OnTheBanks development in the Weavers’ Triangle , a mixed used development for education, leisure, retail, hotel and live music venue and Innovation Drive where we are developing a logistics and supply park. Burnley is the most enterprising place in the UK and with all the investment in the town and surrounding area who knows where we’ll find ourselves in the next few years. The future is extremely bright and it’s very exciting going forward.

Trebor are based in the Midlands but carry out developments throughout the UK. We are working with Burnley on a very exciting new project at the Burnley Knowledge Park which will bring new development to the area on a major regeneration project and deliver lots of jobs and lots of opportunities for occupiers in the area. We chose to get involved in Burnley Knowledge Park due to its unique location next to a new University and College. This development will add to Burnley’s reputation as an enterprising area. I love coming to Burnley. The people are great to work with and they’ve not got a bad football team! – but not as good as The Villa!

Eshton are the developer behind the Burnley Bridge Business Park. Working with Burnley Council on this project has been extremely refreshing. Their openness has given us great confidence to invest in the area. Burnley Bridge Business Park is a 70 acre development site capable of housing developments between 2,000 and 700,000 sq.ft. and we estimate it will bring around 1,400 jobs to the area. This is great news for Burnley and good news for us as a company. The best thing about Burnley is its people, they are good fun, but they have a strong work ethic and we’re not the only company that thinks that.

The Business Secretary Vince Cable hailed Burnley as a shining example to the rest of the country on a recent high profile visit to Burnley. He said the recession would not have happened if more towns were like Burnley, as he met the town’s top business leaders.

During his visit Dr. Cable officially opened the new £50 million Burnley Bridge Business Park, where he praised the “spirit of enterprise” that the project represents.

It is the largest new development on the M65 corridor for more than a decade, and is expected to create more than 1,400 indirect jobs in the area. The 70-acre site is a £50 million development by Eshton, a Leeds-based commercial property investment and development company, which has received a £2.4 million loan from the Government through Lancashire’s Growing Places Fund.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “It is encouraging to see the growth

that is taking place in Burnley. It has weathered the years since the financial crash well and manufacturing in the town is now enjoying a real renaissance.

“Today I’ve seen first-hand how the Government’s industrial strategy is giving businesses both here in Burnley, and all over the country, the confidence to invest, securing highly-skilled jobs and a stronger economy.”

Burnley Council’s Chief Executive said: “Dr. Cable’s visit was evidence that Burnley is a shining example of economic recovery. We’ve been building a reputation as a place that’s open for business, investable and we get things done and we are making an economic comeback.”

We’ve been building a reputation as a place that’s open for business, investable and we get things done and we are making an economic comeback.”The Business Secretary also visited four of the town’s manufacturing and engineering firms to see the success of some of the area’s fastest-growing companies:

• Velocity Composites, a high-tech aerospace company that, in five years, has grown from 3 to 70 employees. Velocity received £86,000 Government funding through the Regional Growth Fund (RGF) Accelerating Business Growth Programme to support a move to larger premises

on AMS Technology Park. The move is expected to create 25 new jobs in Burnley.

• Kaman Tooling UK, a major American aerospace business, and the first company to move onto the new Innovation Drive Aerospace Supply park on the former Michelin Site. The move has been supported by the Burnley Borough Council RGF Programme, and is creating 39 new jobs on the premises.

TRIO OF OFFERS AT BURNLEY BRIDGEThree units at Eshton’s Burnley Bridge

Business Park are now under offer, shortly after the £50 million scheme was launched by Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable.

Offers made at the 70-acre development total 74,100 sq ft and include the 64,100 sq Cobalt Building and two units at Magnesium Court.

The speculative buildings were constructed as part of phase one at the £50m site with the help of a £3.85m ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) grant.

The properties which are BREEAM ‘Very Good’-rated, provide flexible accommodation designed to enable the occupier to configure the space to meet their specific requirements.

James Chapman, managing director of Eshton, said: “Since the Burnley Bridge Business Park scheme was first announced we have had high levels of interest from a wide range of potential occupiers. The launch event added to the buzz about the development and we are delighted to have received offers for these buildings so soon after completion.”

Burnley Bridge offers the first speculative industrial space in the region for six years and

much of the remainder of the scheme will be developed to occupier requirements, making Burnley Bridge Business Park a tempting option for businesses looking for space up to 700,000 sq ft.

James Chapman adds: “As Vince Cable said when he launched the scheme, developments like Burnley Bridge Business Park provide companies with ‘confidence to invest, to secure jobs and play their part in

growing a stronger economy.’“These deals demonstrate that our

instincts about this location and the scale and calibre of development it would support were absolutely right and we look forward to making further announcements very soon.”

Delivered with support from Lancashire’s Growing Places, the business park is expected to create 1,400 sustainable jobs once fully-occupied.
