From the editorwelcome to the october edition of LocalReach. as autumn is now with us and summer is fading away, it may be time to look at a new hobby as the nights draw in, with the clocks set to go back on sunday october 27th. There is a strong influence of dance in this month’s edition, so for those of you considering taking to the dance floor with the strictly Fever hitting the TV screens, there is more information of where you can go locally. Local groups are seeking to increase their memberships; whether it is bowling, the wi or local horticultural society, there is something for most tastes on our door step. Look out for the forthcoming Christmas Craft Fayres for beating the crowds, some of which are detailed inside this month’s edition. i look forward to receiving next month’s editorial.
deadline for the november issue is wednesday 16th october.

Burnham dreamscheme after a very successful summer programme
which saw the young members of the Burnham dreamscheme hand out safety leaflets, maintain the community garden at the Bay Centre and other community tasks, they were rewarded with activities including football training, craft activities, puppet theatre creation with Kevin the Kite, and the big trip to Crealy. The summer was enjoyed by a group of young people, but we are keen to increase the membership. if you are aged between 7 and 14 years old and interested in helping in your community and being rewarded
with points (which in turn form treats), then get in touch. we offer an after school club on a monday between 3.30pm and 5.30pm during term time at the Bay Centre, where volunteers are available to discuss how the programme works. during the october half Term (on the wednesday and Thursday), there will be organised activities taking place. if you are interested in joining, or are an adult who is interested in volunteering, contact John alexander on 07961049868 for more information. how to drug proof your Kids ®Commencing on Thursday 10th october between 7pm-9pm at Churchfield school, highbridge, will be six free sessions for parents of children aged between 8–14 years, focussing on the important role parents and carers play in reducing the risk of harmful alcohol and drug use. Talking with your children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse isn't everyone's idea of fun, especially if they are at that age when parents aren't 'cool'. This autumn, highbridge & Burnham Youth project will be running a training course to help adults approach this difficult topic in a constructive way. The sessions look at practical parenting strategies and aim to provide parents and carers with a 'toolkit' of useful methods, building better relationships and trust between adults and their children. You will receive a handbook and all sessions are free. places are limited, so for more information or to register for a place go to www.hbyp.co.uk, email: [email protected] or telephone sarah Taylor: 07866 458169.

halloween at the walled gardens of Canningtonwednesday 30 & Thursday 31 october 2013, 10am – 3pm
The walled gardens of Cannington are set within the walls of an old medieval priory, which was first established in about 1138 by the de Courcy family. over the years many local stories have survived concerning ghostly visitations by nuns in Cannington Court, and indeed staff and students at the gardens, past and present have anecdotes to tell of sightings!
The walled gardens were officially opened by hRh the Earl of wessex, prince Edward in 2009, and have classic and contemporary features, a botanical glasshouse and two smaller gardens within the walls which are areas of real tranquillity.
They really are a beautiful treasure, and there is also a plant sales area and gift shop which you don’t need entry to the gardens to visit. and now that autumn is upon us, the tea rooms are also not to be missed!
if you dare to enter the gardens during halloween season, there will be plenty to see – with a pumpkin trail and carving available for children. Join us for some children's activities during this half term week.
Tickets purchased in advance are only £4 per child (£5 on the day), and include a drink, halloween biscuit, pumpkin trail, and pumpkin*. other activities include face painting and craft model painting (small charges apply).
adults gain free entry to the gardens when accompanying a child under 16. one free adult entry per child.

highbridge & Burnham-on-sea Carnival - 4th novemberThe highbridge & Burnham-on-sea Carnival is being held a week earlier than in the past. This is due to a very poor collection in 2012 which resulted in less money being donated to local charities and more fund raising by our Committee in order to be able to stage this year’s Carnival. we hope we will benefit by being the second Carnival both in the collection and with the weather! Volunteers are needed as usual (collectors and marshals). we are particularly anxious to enlist local charities to help collect. a very attractive financial package is being offered to charities who can assist with the collection on the night. please contact annalee on [email protected] or telephone 079686 09272 if you are interested in earning money for your charity. we would also welcome new members to our committee. we meet on the second wednesday of each month at The Ritz social Club from 7.30pm. we hope our spectators have a wonderful evening and donate generously in order to help the charities and ensure we have a Carnival in the future. we have some spectacular entries this year and look forward to entertaining you all.

somerset Ramblershave fun, get fit and enjoy the countryside with sedgemoor Ramblers.
The group have been very active during the summer months, enjoying some lovely walks and social events, and have made the most of the beautiful weather. our popular summer outing this year took us to dorset where we had a choice of three walks, all with stunning views of the coast. our summer Lunch, following a
short walk in the morning, was another enjoyable sociable event, held on one of our hottest days. a group of nine spent a 10-day holiday in July walking in the French alps, and another walking holiday has been arranged, to madeira in september. sadly, the summer evening walks (and pub meals afterwards) have now finished. our main walking day is sunday, but the popular shorter saturday afternoon walks will continue and it is hoped there will be more arranged
for the next programme. our autumn programme is well underway and our walk leaders have arranged some excellent walks for us to enjoy as winter approaches and the days become shorter. if you enjoy walking, come and join us. sedgemoor Ramblers is a local group within Ramblers, and new walkers are always welcome. Children back to school. now what? now that the children are back at school, this is the perfect time to get yourself back into education with an adult education class from somerset skills & Learning. Research shows that getting yourself involved in a new course has many benefits to your overall lifestyle and career development. not all courses require you to sit an exam or produce a portfolio; somerset skills & Learning have a range of courses you can do to gain a qualification, or to just do
something for yourself that you are interested in. Rosie from Burnham told us: “when the children all started school, i had some time on my hands, so i signed up for spanish classes. i had been good at spanish at school, but life had got so busy, i hadn’t done it as an adult. once my children started school though, i found i had the time. The tutor was so friendly, and in no time at all, my spanish skills were coming back to me. i also made some good friends, and the extra
confidence it gave me was really useful as well.”if you want to get on like Rosie, spanish classes start on Tuesday afternoons if you want to pick up a qualification, or Tuesday evening for the leisure class. it’s also running monday evenings in Cheddar. The new brochure from somerset skills & Learning is available now and lists all the courses available in your area. Visit www.learnsomerset.co.uk to download a copy, or pop into your local library or centre.
'scrumpy sax' to appear at Burnham and highbridge Band Concert
after a much acclaimed successful performance at the end of august in their Burnham-on-sea princess
hall season of summer concerts, the Burnham and highbridge Band is busy in preparation for the next in the series, which takes place on sunday 27th october at 7.45pm. guest performance this year comes again from the ‘scrumpy saxophone Quartet’, whom the audience will be delighted to hear once more. The
Quartet comprises four members of the Yeovil Concert Band. They perform several short pieces during the band's concert and have recently played at several charity and fundraising events in the Taunton and Yeovil area. one audience member remarked that this is now a much more exciting band, whose selection of music and quality of performance gets better with each outing. Band secretary Ken henton said: “This is due to a growing commitment from members not only to rehearse well but also to apply an analytical approach to their playing which identifies where musicality
can be improved. we are grateful for the efforts of david Fisher our musical director who demands hard work from the band and who is now obtaining results, which, a number of years ago, we could only dream of. his rapport with the audience, along with his excellent selection of music in a more modern and popular style, leads to a relaxed and enjoyable concert, ideal for a sunday evening’s listening. at the price of £6 (£5 for concessions), it has to be excellent value for an evening out.” Tickets may be bought from princess Box office or purchased at the door.
The huntspill art group The arts group meet every other wednesday afternoon in the East huntspill Village hall. doors open at 1.30pm to set up. There are some materials available, including mount board and framing/cutting tools. once upon a Time in Burnham - The Railway Comes to Townit has already been
said that the years around 1860 were pivotal in the
development of Burnham and highbridge. much of the history of shipping in the two towns is inexorably linked to the history of the railways. initially the sCR only terminated at highbridge, having substantially, followed the line of the by then defunct highbridge to glastonbury Canal. at the time, passengers and goods would either be transferred to the Bristol to Exeter railway for onward transportation to Bristol and the north or to south wales or to Taunton and beyond into the south west peninsula. Those bound for Burnham had the option of hiring a fly (a small horse-drawn carriage) or walking the couple of miles along sandyway (Burnham Road).
when the railway arrived, Burnham was ready; there was no shortage of boarding houses and small and inexpensive hotels and inns. george Reed, a local entrepreneur and benefactor who was a major shareholder in the Tidal harbour Company, built and opened the Reeds arms and the pier hotel to accommodate visitors of all classes (the pier being somewhat
more down market than its neighbour, and was aimed at the less well to do visitors).
when passengers alighted at Burnham and emerged onto the forecourt which between them covered the land at the seaward end of marine drive, between the bistro and the top of abingdon street and headed for the sea, they were greeted with a message written on the wall of the pier hotel that proclaimed ‘RaiLwaY REFREshmEnT Rooms good sTaBLin BiLLiaRds’, in letters a couple of feet high. after 150 years it is still legible.
The station, track and goods yard covered all the land along marine drive past the car park to a point near the Catholic Church. The station building and platform, much loved by the late sir John Betjeman were slightly less than 100 metres overall in length. at the far end of the platform was a small signal box with three or four levers, which has been restored and can now be seen at the museum at washford station. The last man to operate that box was Jock Kirckbright.
Thanks to Bob Thomas, author and local historian for supplying this snapshot into the town’s history.

Linking Computers to mobile phones to provide an internet Connection
as some of you know, i don’t run a computer shop, but have a mobile computer business that visits people at their home or business in the Burnham area. on occasions, an internet connection is required where one is not available, such as when parked on the side of the road, or at a property where the broadband is not working. i sometimes find myself ordering parts or replying to e-mails when i’m “out and about”. one interesting facilility that many modern mobile phones provide is called “tethering”. simply, this allows the connection of a computer to
the internet via the mobile phone. in the past, many people purchased a “dongle” which connects to the mobile networks, but requires its own sim card and therefore either a contract or pay as you go facility. if you like to take your laptop with you when away from home or work, it would be worth checking your phone to see if this facility is available before buying a “dongle”, as often you can connect to the internet through a laptop without any additional charge from your mobile phone network. it is always worth a call to the mobile network to check firstly if your phone supports this feature, and if so are there any charges, or limits. as long as when connected you stay away from streaming video such as You Tube or BBC iplayer, the costs for e-mailing and browsing the web are minimal. This can also apply when abroad, as recently the European union has forced the mobile companies to reduce their charges substantially. For example, i recently visited spain and used my iphone to connect to my laptop. one day, i sent and received about 20 e-mails and surfed about 30 web pages all for a total price of £3 – a daily charge allowing up to 30megabytes of internet usage. a few years ago, this would have cost tens, if not hundreds of pounds!!

Today my disciplines include oils, watercolours, pastels, acrylics, gouache, pen and ink, and more. i love to be versatile, but my style includes focusing on beauty that might otherwise be overlooked, looking beyond the
obvious! art can be calming and peaceful, but it can also be arresting and exciting.”Visit www.timsmithlighthouseart.net to see Tim’s work, but there's nothing like seeing art in person! opening times excluding mondays are daily 11am - 6pm and sundays 2pm - 6pm at: 47 Rosewood avenue, Burnham-on-sea, somerset Ta8 1hF. There are three additional local artist venues (212 Burnham Road, 112 Berrow Road & ss&L in princess street); make a day of it - art can be fun for all the family! River Brue Footpath, highbridgeThe River Brue Footpath provides a pleasant route
for pedestrians and cyclists along the north side of the River Brue in highbridge. work on the next stage was planned for early september, with construction of the path from alexander Court to station walk. This will complete the section from highbridge railway station to the town centre. The path crosses the course of the former River Brue on a shallow embankment.
The riverside of the embankment will be faced with a stone protection layer and coir matting to encourage vegetation growth. The scheme was designed to meet Environment agency specification with respect to flood protection. The work is expected to take about four weeks. The scheme is mostly funded by contributions from developers of adjoining properties with a small input by sedgemoor district Council. The scheme was designed by sustrans and the works will be carried out on behalf of sedgemoor district Council by Larry walker groundworks.

Budget Consultation - Your Budget, Your say - make it Countsedgemoor district Council wants residents to have their say on how
sedgemoor district Council should spend its proportion of the Council Tax. sedgemoor district Council continues to work within a very tight budget and will be reviewing its services to make sure that every penny is spent wisely. sdC gets approximately 9p in the £ from each pound paid in council tax, the other 91p being split between somerset County Council, the police, Fire and Rescue services and parish/Town councils. sedgemoor has been carrying out an annual budget consultation exercise for several years, in order to ensure the views of the public are considered when making decisions
regarding budgets and priorities. sedgemoor has been successful with Budget Consultation in previous years, but is looking to sustain that success and improve further in order to give as large and wide a group as possible the opportunity to participate and have their say. The budget consultation exercise is carried out by sdC staff. The budget consultation exercise involves 5,000 questionnaires being sent out to a random sample of sedgemoor residents. The questionnaire will also be available to complete online at the following web address: http://www.sedgemoor.gov.uk/budgetconsultation . The consultation period will run until october 25th 2013. For further information or to request a questionnaire please call 0845 408 2540.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU
ThE FLowER gaRdEnThe mixed flower border needs renovating every three years, and October is the best month to do the work. If you have a big mixed border then it may help if you do a third of it each year. Lift out every plant that you want to divide, taking care not to disturb the plants that do not require division. At the same time you may want to move some plants to the back of the border and some to the front. Some manure put on top of the soil will help feed the plants and also help retain moisture during dry weather. Sow Sweet Peas this month for early flowering. I plant mine at the beginning of the month when the weather is still warm. When the plants have made four sets of leaves, pinch out the growing tip to encourage side shoots.
There are two ways that you can now grow your plants:• If you leave all the side shoots on you will end up with a
big bushy plant with lots of small flowers.• Grow the strongest side shoot up a cane, taking all the
other side shoots off. You will get fewer but larger flowers.
VEgETaBLEsLift beetroot, carrots, onions and potatoes. Store carrots and beetroot in dry sand for winter use. Top dress asparagus beds with 6in of well-rotted manure. Asparagus foliage should be well ripened before it is cut down. Bring unripened tomatoes on stems indoors and hang up to ripen.
