'Sounds and Voices’ is a fortnightly talking newspaper for visually impaired people. Run entirely by volunteers, it is based at The Old Courthouse building in Burnham-on-sea. The news area covered on the recordings is Burnham, Highbridge, Cheddar, Axbridge and some of the surrounding villages, including Brean.

Currently there are eight editors who take it in turn to edit and present a recording script lasting approximately an hour. I have been an editor for 'Sounds and

Voices' for some years now. Normally we try to have 30

minutes of news and then half an hour of 'magazine' material. This can include book reviews, recipes or items of County, national or global interest.

On some recordings, interviews with local people are included. Our Christmas tape, which is often produced and read by all the editor’s also includes a message from the current Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge.

Each recording is copied onto

memory sticks. These are sent to recipients by free of charge.

Since its' inception, 'Sounds and Voices' has come a long way. We all do our best to try to bring local news and happenings to those who cannot read local newspapers.

If you know of anyone who might benefit from this service, please contact - Mrs Joyce Dunbavan 783583. or write to 'Sounds and Voices' at The old Courthouse, Jaycroft Road.

Thousands of homes in the South West are benefiting from the clean green energy of solar power, and now the same technology is being used to improve the health of rural communities in one of Africa’s poorest nations.

A team of volunteers from the South West’s leading renewable energy specialists has just returned from 2 weeks spent installing solar-powered fridges for storing vaccines at remote health posts in a rural area of Ethiopia.

Recognising the desperate need for properly refrigerated vaccines in the heat, the company raised money through donations and fund-raising activities for its charity partner For-Ethiopia, which works to relieve poverty and sickness in the East African country.

Staff from Solarsense travelled to a rural area west of the capital Addis Ababa at the end of March. They installed solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roofs of three health posts to generate electricity, fitted the vaccine fridges and trained key local people in how to operate and maintain the fridges.

The team of three also revisited another health post, Beso, where Solarsense staff installed solar PV

and a vaccine fridge last year. Each of these posts serves at least 2,000 people, as well as supplying properly refrigerated vaccines to other nearby health posts.

The electric fridges safely store vaccines used to immunise children against potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, tetanus and diphtheria.

When the temperature of these vaccines reaches 8 degrees C, the potency is destroyed and they have to be discarded. Before the solar-powered fridge was installed at Beso, one in three vaccines had to be discarded but now the wastage rate is down to zero.

Stephen Barrett of Solarsense said: “We have installed solar energy systems on thousands of homes and business premises across the South West, and are glad to be able to use our expertise in helping communities in other parts of the world.”

The Solarsense charity team offer workshops and presentations for school or other community groups on solar power and its impacts in the developing world.

During the last five years, there have been 262 crashes on Somerset’s roads where at least one of the drivers involved has given a positive breath test, indicating they are over the legal drink-drive limit.

Over the summer months, there is typically an rise in crashes. With several major celebrations coming up such as the European Championships and the Olympics, it is essential to plan ahead before partying.

Warmer weather, parties and alcohol go hand in hand and it is therefore essential to make arrangements regarding your transport. You could stay with friends, book a taxi or agree have a designated driver.

We all react differently to alcohol and the only way to get rid of it from your body is time. This can take up to 24

hours. Think about this the next morning, as you may still be over the limit. It is impossible to guess when you are over the limit and it is therefore better not to drink at all if you are likely to drive.

Drink drive convictions can have a significant effect on your life and as they have to be declared for 11 years for insurance purposes, they also have a huge effect on your motoring costs. If caught you would face a fine of up to £5,000. With a criminal conviction on your licence it can also take months to apply for a visa. You will get a minimum of a 12 month driving ban. How would that affect your job?

Parties are fun and should be enjoyed to the full, but maybe paying for a taxi isn’t such a bad idea.

Party Time classic car show in aid of freewheelersSanders Garden World, Brent Knoll will be the location for the Classic Car Show on Fathers Day - Sunday 17th June in aid of Freewheelers Bloodbikes. The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) has opened a new charity shop in Burnham-on-Sea on Saturday 21st April to raise money for the care and re-homing of animals.

The Regent Street shop is based eight miles from the Trust’s Somerset Rescue Centre at Heaven’s Gate Farm, Langport and will be an important way of promoting its work. In addition to a wide range of items for sale, the shop will

also display some of the latest animals available for re-homing.

The Somerset Centre of the NAWT started operating 21 years ago and re-homes almost 350 dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and field animals a year. The fundamental principle of our approach to animal welfare is that no healthy animal will be put to sleep. Money raised goes towards their care.

NAWT Director of Resources Jacquie Gaywood said: “We wouldn’t be able to help so many animals without your support. This new shop will provide additional income and help us to continue our work.”

The official opening takes place at 11am on Saturday April 21 and will be opened by Nick Walters, chair of the charity’s trustees.

The shop welcomes donations of clothes, books, toys, bric a brac and any household items. You can either deliver to the charity shop during opening hours or to the Langport centre. It is that time of year for a spring clean, so if you are thinking of throwing some bits out then cut the refuse on the landfills and recycle it with us.

For those not aware of what a solid state hard drive is, essentially it is a storage device with no moving parts (similar in technology to the common USB memory stick). Traditionally, computers and laptops were based on storage technology which was developed in the 1950’s by IBM, but these devices were affected by speed, heat and moving part issues, hence the solid state hard drive was created.

Early solid state devices were affected by high prices and reliability issues, but fortunately, current models are cheaper, faster and more reliable. A typical application for a solid state hard drive would be to run the operating system (i.e C: drive) on a Windows 7 computer, the main benefit being that the unit would start up/shutdown and operate faster than a standard hard drive plus not slow down when more data was added.

On a rough basis, the cost for a solid state drive is roughly £1 per gigabyte, so for around £100-£200 (on average) it is possible to copy an entire standard hard drive onto a solid state drive, hence giving much faster started and

usage. We use some software called HDClone to do this. Sometimes the old standard hard drive could be used as a second drive in a system for data storage or backup.

As with all computers, before attempting such an operation, I would advise that a full backup of any data is taken and that regular backups are made of your important data. This operation is also recommended to be completed by an experienced IT professional, as mistakes could be costly.

In my opinion, replacing a standard hard drive with a solid state drive (SSD) is a very good way of speeding up a Windows 7 computer, which although may be of good specification, is not quite cutting the mustard in terms of speed. Access times are often quoted and I would recommend drives with at least 500 MB per second read and write times. The higher the number for read and write times the better.

Tickets are available from the Box Office at the Princess or by phoning 785727. Tickets are £10 and include a glass of wine and substantial nibbles. Quality Care at Home

I hope this message finds you all still safe.

I have worked in a lot of different places and recognise that a community and its members are the greatest contributors to keeping a community safe and secure. Your work in reducing crime and making our towns and villages unattractive to criminals does make a difference. I always say that it is almost impossible to measure preventative work but I can tell you that in places where

the community doesn’t care or isn’t interested, crime is higher than it is around us. That is good news but a timely reminder of all our responsibilities is never wasted.

When do you report something you are concerned about? If you don’t recognise that person hanging around, haven’t seen that car in your street before, at that time of day, if they are acting in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, report it. We will never think you are wasting our

time. Honestly, the Police want to catch crooks as much you want us to. The Police want you to feel as safe as possible without the worry of becoming a victim of crime.

Together we can all make a difference. If it worries you, call us. It is what you want from us and so we will whenever possible deliver. Doing this together, we make it more difficult for criminals at ALL times.

Therapists from all over the South-West will be available to give individual treatments, and group talks, or you can just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The weekend is aptly named “Tranquil Moments".

Stop for refreshment at “Linda’s Loaf” catering tent and experience her freshly cooked food, or even bring your own picnic. Stroll through the marquee, talk to therapists, and experience the treatments available on site (charges will of course apply).

This year’s Holistic Weekend at Mooseheart, Winscombe is being organised by the Burnham-on-Sea Lodge and Ladies’ Circle. With only a few places left in the marquee, the organisers urge potential exhibitors to book now to avoid disappointment.

Last year over £3,000 was raised and shared between Mooseheart and St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton. This year, as well as raising money once again for Mooseheart, the nominated charity is the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and we are hoping to raise a similar amount.

For more information about the weekend, either access the website www.holisticweekend.co.uk, or email [email protected]

Impacts on transport, local businesses and housing* are just some of the issues three Somerset Councils have raised in relation to plans to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.

Somerset CC, Sedgemoor District Council and West Somerset Council have submitted a joint Local Impact Report (LIR) to the Examining Authority at the Planning Inspectorate to meet the May 3 deadline.

The Local Impact Report is part of the legal examination process and marks the Councils’ principal opportunity to put down in writing their evidence of the potential positive and negative impacts of the development. It also suggests what they believe should be done to protect the

interests of local communities. The three Councils confirm

they support the project in principle and have worked collaboratively with EDF Energy to develop the plans. They recognise the progress EDF Energy has made, especially in developing an education strategy and economic proposals. However, they feel that in some areas the degree to which their advice has been integrated into the final application is insufficient.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “The County Council supports this development in principle and we welcome the economic opportunities it could bring to Somerset. We still have some

significant concerns, in particular relating to the proposed transport mitigation. We are working hard to make sure these are resolved fairly and appropriately.”

Cllr Tim Taylor, West Somerset Council Leader, said: “It is clear from this document that we have listened to what local residents and businesses have been telling us about this project, their aspirations and their concerns. We now have to hope that the Examining Panel will listen to and weigh up against the national need the local impacts as we have represented them.”

The Councils’ joint Local Impact Report will be available to view on the Planning Inspectorate’s website in due course http://infrastructure.planningportal.gov.uk/.

With his wicked grin and beaky nose Mr. Punch is known around the world, making him the most famous puppet character.

From his first appearance in England he was a hit with the public and nobility alike. Mr. Punch so tickled the fancy of that prominent citizen Samuel Pepys that he is mentioned a number of times in his celebrated diary.

When the railways brought travel to the masses and took town crowds to the seaside Mr. Punch went too, making himself part of traditional beach fun.

He has undergone many changes and no-one can foretell in what guise he will emerge from the 21st Century. Now celebrating his 350th birthday with all the energy intact that has carried him from the 17th Century

to today in a triumphal progress worth boasting about.

For more information on Punch and Judy visit www.punchandjudy.org or to help him celebrate 350 years of entertaining visit Marine Cove on Saturday 2nd June and Tuesday 5th June between 2pm and 5pm. Keep the tradition alive in our seaside town.

Climbing and bush roses are all in flower this month and next, and need feeding with occasional doses of liquid manure. To get the best from them, use little and often. Apply when the soil is wet but always keep the feed away from the foliage.

The more blooms you cut, the more you will have.

Hardy annuals need attention during the growing season, thin out ruthlessly as crowded plants never give the best results.

In the shrubbery, prune intelligently. Here are some tips.

Shrubs that flower on tips of shoots, such as lilacs and rhododendrons, rarely need much pruning but if the shrub is untidy or leggy, prune these immediately after the flowers have faded.

Shrubs that flower on stems that were new growth last season, such as forsythia, prune hard back now to encourage them to make plenty of new stems during the summer and there will be plenty of flowers next year.

Shrubs that flower on short spurs along the old wood – leave these alone as they will be cut back during the winter.

VegetaBLes.

Plant out tomatoes against a south facing wall or fence. Water lettuces copiously in dry weather. Continue earthing up potatoes.

Greenhouses need plenty of air and should be shaded. Also keep the floor damp to keep the atmosphere moist.

June Work in the garden …

For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. On Monday 18th June a

Highbridge Badger gets letter from Buckingham Palace

A 10-year-old St John Ambulance Badger from Highbridge has received a special missive from The

Queen after she created a Jubilee card to mark the Sovereign’s 60 years on the throne. Leah Adams, who lives in

Mayflower Court, produced the card to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as part of her Creative Badger activities.

Badgers – members of the first aid charity who are aged five to 10 – study a number of different activities alongside learning life saving first aid skills during their weekly meetings. Leah, a Year 5 pupil at Churchfield Primary School, is a member of the Highbridge and Burnham Badger Sett that meets every Tuesday at the St John Ambulance centre in Bank Street, Highbridge. As well as commenting on the Queen’s own anniversary, Leah told her that the St John Ambulance Badger movement was celebrating its own 25th anniversary this year.

Sett leader Julia Gibson said: ‘I was so impressed with her ingenuity I sent the card to Buckingham Palace with a covering letter. I was delighted when we got a reply thanking the badgers and leader of Highbridge with a personal letter to Leah thanking her for her kind thoughts.

Leah said: ‘I never thought that I would actually get a reply. Isn’t it cool that the Queen had taken time to read a card from me?’

Somerset Badgers will be taking part in a year of celebrations during 2012 to mark the 25th anniversary. Any young people interested in joining a St John Ambulance Badger Sett in Somerset can go to www.sja.org.uk/somerset or contact 01278 726740.
