Dear HCE Friends, My husband and I returned home in time so I could attend the North District Meeting on April 22. We enjoyed spending six days in Branson, MO on the way home so we could see some shows. The weather was 80 degrees every day, the best we have had in four years. We were able to rent a spacious two bedroom log cabin in the woods which we shared with friends from Webster. Happy Days because spring time is here in northern Wisconsin. We can walk outside early in the morning and hear the birds singing and watch them building nests. Starting in April our lives become busier as we attend more HCE meetings and family events. Several of us attended the North District Spring Meeting in Hayward and International Evening with foreign exchange students. The Harmony Club is busy planning a fun BCAHCE Recognition Luncheon for us on Thursday, May 20. Note the change of date and new location announcement in this newsletter. We are busy planning our flower and vegetable gardens. What a pleasure to “play” in the dirt again! It is a good excuse to spend time outside after spending too many hours inside during the winter months. Enjoy the bright sunshine and extended hours of daylight. It is so good to be home again. We do not miss the noisy jet airplanes and city traffic. There is “nothing like home” and living in the woods. In HCE Service to You,
Muriel Anderson, BCAHCE President

Dear HCE Friends: What a delightful time of year! The flowers are blooming. The birds are singing. Spring is in the air! We have had some unseasonably warm weather the past couple months, so hopefully you have been able to get outside to enjoy it. Coming up are several important HCE events: May 20, our Recognition Luncheon and Spring Meeting (see notice elsewhere in the newsletter); June 15, Brain Aerobics program by Gail Peavey, Polk County Family Living Agent, also cultural arts judging. Kudos to Amy Kopecky and Carole Newman for planning and hosting the International Dinner for local foreign exchange students and their host families. It was a wonderful evening filled with great food, good fellowship and interesting presentations by the students. A busy summer is ahead for us. Be sure to take some time for yourselves, and to enjoy family and friends. I recently spent some time in Florida with my brothers and my father. We were busy cleaning out his house (filled with stuff from 60+ years!). We laughed at old photos, and were exhausted from throwing out accumulated stuff. We are hoping my father will be moved to an assisted living facility in the near future. Also, I have a family reunion scheduled in Michigan the first weekend of August, which I’m looking forward to attending. Feel free to contact me anytime with HCE news or events from your club. I am always happy to join your members for a club meeting or program. Happy Spring! Marilyn Kooiker Family Living Agent/HCE Advisor

Twelve years and 500,000 books later, Wisconsin Bookworms™ is still bringing the joy of reading to young children around the state and Burnett County. We have been involved with this partnership since 1998. In Burnett County we read to 100 children each month at Mina Copeland Head Start, St. Croix Tribal Head Start in Hertel, Grantsburg Library and Burnett Community Library (Webster). Each child receives their own Scholastic book, along with an activity sheet to enhance related activities at home. Each school year the children (ages 3-5) receive a set of 8 books. Cost of each set of books is $23.00. Readers this year included HCE members: Muriel Anderson, Jane Menge, Karen Brooks, Jan Frazee, Fran Krause, Judy Marek, Irene Peterson, Dorothy Wellman. Community volunteer readers were Buck Gooding, Charlotte Heidel and Judy Pearson. Mary Poretti serves as the Bookworms ™ coordinator and Karen Brooks heads the fund raising activities. The book which was distributed in May this year was “Grow Flower Grow”. Congratulations and Thank You to all the dedicated HCE and community volunteer readers throughout the years! Great job!!

Eight BCAHCE members (six from Odd ‘N’ Ends Club and two from Harmony Club) attended the North
District Spring Meeting in Hayward. Thank you, members, for taking time to participate in this
important meeting. Approximately 25 district members attended from four counties: Sawyer, Douglas,
Washburn and Burnett. We missed seeing members from Bayfield and Price counties.
Betty Helwig from Stone Lake conducted the business meeting in the absence of District Director, Wendi
Kroll. Yearly reports were given. Information was given on service activities, educational programs,
fund raisers, reading books for Bookworms™ and current membership numbers.
There was a round table discussion on how to secure candidates for the positions of
secretary/treasurer, District director elect for 2011-2012 and committee chairs. No one came forward
to accept the District secretary/treasurer position for the three year term and someone is needed
immediately. There are only two meetings per year The county presidents have a description of the
responsibilities, so if interested, please call your county president for details. LEADERS ARE NEEDED at
the District levels. Someone is needed to pay a few bills!! The experience of a new position teaches you
more about HCE.
A delicious baked chicken dinner was enjoyed and then we were entertained by
James J. Bishop, WI DNR, who showed a Cedar-Strip Canoe and presented a
slide “tour” of the new canoe museum in Spooner. The grand opening of the
new Canoe Heritage Museum will be held on May 29, the day the State of
Wisconsin has declared as the 1st Annual Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day.
A collection on 25 canoes will be on display, one that was used by President
Calvin Coolidge when fishing at Cedar Island near Brule, WI. Many volunteer
hours have been spent on this new museum, making it a good place to take
summer visitors. The museum is next to train depot in Spooner.

By attending this program, you will learn to stimulate your mind to stay at its peak for as long as possible. Come to laugh, stretch, move, and get your brain engaged!!
