Dear HCE Friends, This summer has gone by too quickly. My outside flowers have survived thanks to lots of mely rain and added ferlizer. We have only watered the lawn once and I have carried fewer watering cans of water to the plants. Our red squirrels have disappeared so no more eaten flowers! The birds have kept us entertained all summer. We purchased an Audubon approved feeder for the orioles. They stayed with us all season for the first me. They especially like the grape jelly but they prefer to drink the sugar water from the hummingbird feeder? In a few weeks they will leave us and start their flight south to find warmer weather. Our trees are starng to turn colors and are starng to fall. The ferns in our woods are turning brown. A sure sign that fall is approaching. This summer our clubs have been busy making booths for the county fairs, preparing and serving picnics to our senior friends and making learning games for head start children. The clubs also enjoyed their summer oungs and aending BCAHCE sponsored educaonal programs. Several of our members are planning to aend the WAHCE Conference in September held in Eau Claire. It is a fun me to learn about the service acvies and educaonal acvies from other HCE club members from our state. Several of us are looking forward to the bus tour to visit an Amish home and farm the opening day of conference. Enjoy the cooler days of fall and our upcoming WAHCE Conference and North District Meeng in Cable in October. Dear HCE Friends: Welcome Fall and lots of HCE activities! This seems to be a busy time for many organizations, including HCE. Gardens are producing, schools are starting, organizations are having their conferences and fall meetings. Those members attending the state HCE conference in Eau Claire (September 14-16) remember to bring and wear your BEST HATS to celebrate our 70th Anniversary! Several of our HCE members will be entering items in the cultural arts contest – good luck to you all! Muriel Anderson will be installed as North District Director-Elect at the state HCE conference. She will become the North District Director on January 1, 2011 for a 3-year term. Thank you, Muriel, for taking on this responsibility and for your dedication to the HCE organization! North District fall meeting will be held on Thursday, October 14 in Cable. A registration form is included in this newsletter (again). WAHCE president, Lylene Scholz, and May Flaig, WAHCE Family Life Chair will be attending this meeting, as well as Marcelline Protheroe, past WAHCE president and new Update Editor. Please plan to attend this meeting in Cable, and car pool if you can. This date conflicts with the regularly scheduled County Natural Resources committee meeting, so Marilyn will be coming late to the District HCE meeting. (Marilyn has to report to this committee as Department Head.) Good luck with canning/freezing your vegetables/fruits this fall. Remember, UW-Extension has updated bulletins on the proper processing times. Don’t forget to add vinegar or lemon juice to your tomatoes! Tomatoes now contain much less natural acid, so you must add it when processing. Also, if you use a pressure canner, please have the gauge checked annually for accuracy. Marilyn can do this at any time in the Extension office. Just call ahead to make sure I am available. I will be attending the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) conference in Portland, Maine the third week of September. This will be a wonderful time to also visit my brother-in-law in Vermont. My husband will be joining me. We will be gone the week of September 20-24. Have a wonderful autumn season. Enjoy the cool weather and changed leaves. I look forward to seeing you at HCE events and other community activities in the area.

B urnett County will host the North District Meeting in October of 2011. I have volunteered to chair this event. I will need the help of every member of both clubs if this is to be a success. Please

discuss it in your club and select at least 2 members to be a part of this committee. Our first meeting

will probably be in January. Other items to keep in mind and have some suggestions ready are: a

theme, a main speaker, classes you would like to have, etc. I already have volunteers for cake

decorating and flower arranging. We will need at least one educational program that all can attend; or

two educational programs to choose from. Think about having a special entertainment, also. There

will be a business meeting for the club presidents included. I understand that the State Director is

planning to attend, so let’s make this an outstanding meeting.

Call me at home, 715-689-2591 or cell, 903-826-2952.

A ll new District Chairs and officers will be invited to attend training for their position on November 3-4 in Rosholt. The outgoing committee chairs

and other leaders will help you prepare to help the county chairs in the

district. The training will be held at a camp where we can share ideas in a

    relaxed retreat setting.

Terms are up for the following Committee Chairs:

    Cultural & Textile Arts

    Membership/Marketing

    Family Life Coordinator

Please consider one of these positions and call Muriel Anderson. The new

committee chairs need to be selected October 14 at the North District

    Meeting in Cable.

I f you are a Bookworms™ reader or would like to become a reader, there will be a reader training coming up in September. YOu will be receiving a call or note soon from Marilyn Kooiker with more

A HCE Secretary, Donna Bergsten, announced that she has been appointed by WAHCE President, Lylene Scholz, to the position of Acting Director for North District for the remainder of 2010, replacing Wendi Kroll, who stepped down due to new full time employment. Muriel Anderson, Burnett County, was nominated and elected for the 2011-2013 North District Director position. Joyce Cook from Douglas County has been appointed by Donna Bergsten to serve as Acting North District Treasurer until the end of the year. Donna Bergsten has volunteered to take the position of Secretary/Treasurer for North District for 2011-2012. This will resume the same rotation of elections between Director and Secretary/Treasurer. The Secretary/Treasurer position will be discussed October 14 at the North District meeting in Cable.

A sincere “Thank You” to Rosie Yaekel sharing her knowledge and having the patience to teach seven HCE members, Marilyn Kooiker and a guest from Minnesota how to make beautiful cards with a needle

and thread. Rosie prepared the cards by punching the holes in the cover, then explained how to cross the

threads to create intricate thread designs. Participants went home with a beautifully completed card.

Rosie provided a card kit to each which included the tulip pattern and an email address to order more

    designs.

Rosie lives in Burnett County for the summer , then she and her husband return to Illinois for the winter

months. Members enjoy having Rosie as an HCE member because she always has so many ideas for fund

raising, tours and education. Rosie has so much energy! She bakes pies for a local restaurant and does

catering while she is up north.

M ark your calendars to attend the North District Fall Meeting in Cable. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 14 at the UCC Church beginning at 9 am. A registration form and agenda is enclosed in

this newsletter. Deadline for registration is September 30.

Chair and Marcelline Protheroe, WAHCE Immediate Past President and new Update Editor. If you are

unable to attend state conference, this is your opportunity to meet special state officers who give many

P lans are already being made to select a location and date for Burnett County HCE to host the 2011 North District Fall Meeting. Barbara Cunningham volunteered to chair the planning committee. Volunteers to serve on the planning committee are Diane Medaglia and Lavonne O’Brien from Harmony Club and Jan Frazee from Odds ‘N’ Ends Club. A “thank you” to members volunteering to help plan this special event in October, 2011. Barb Cunningham is currently searching for a location with a tentative first choice date of October 20 . Ideas for a couple of crafts have been submitted. The opportunity to host this event happens once every six years.

T he Republic of Panama is south of Costa Rica and north of Colombia. The Panama Canal bisects the isthmus at its narrowest and lowest point, allowing passage from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

Panama is slightly smaller than South Carolina. Its topography is marked by mountains in the west, rolling hills through the interior and low, flat fertile plains on the Caribbean.

The government is a constitutional democracy with Ricardo Mitchell as its president. The population is 3,360,474, with a life expectancy of 77 years. Panama City is the largest city, with 1,053,000 population.

A little history: Columbus discovered Panama around 1503 and the Spanish in 1513. It was the major shipping point to and from South and Central America. In 1821, Central America revolted against Spain, and Panama became independent, along with Columbia. For the next 82 years, Panama tried to break away from Columbia and, in 1903, (with US help) they became truly free.

In 1989, the assembly voted Manuel Noriega as “maximum leader” and declared Panama at war with the US. In December 1989, US troops seized control of Panama and Noriega surrendered.

On December 31, 1999, the US handed over control of the Panama Canal to Panama. Panama is in the process of doubling the size of the canal and it should be complete by 2015.

The Harmony Club created a BCAHCE booth for the county fairs. Congratulations to their members as they received a Blue Ribbon for their entry entitled “Going Stronger, Reaching Farther” at the Central Burnett County Fair in Webster. Fran, Carole, Adeline and Amy set up the booth at both fairs. Thank you for advertising BCAHCE at the fairs.
