MARTINI DANCE 2018 …. Martini Tanz 2018

This year, we celebrated the feast of St. Martin, as usual, with a dinner-dance. It took place on Nov. 17th, 2018, at the J.C. Banquet Hall, the former Danube Swabian Club. For our entertainment, we had a new band, THE EDELWEISS TRIO from Kitchener, and they were well received. Our traditional Austrian foods were prepared by the J.C. Banquet Hall and the dinner was delicious.

To the delight of our guests, artists from the Toronto Operetta Theatre (TOT) under the direction of Director Guillermo Silva-Marin, gave us a taste of the operetta DIE FLEDERMAUS. Two sopranos and one tenor accompanied by a wonderful pianist sang beautiful songs from the well-known operetta which will be performed in Toronto this month. We truly enjoyed this interlude and many of us are considering attending one of the performances. Mr. Silva-Marin also raffled off two tickets that were won by Tony Baumann, the former President of the Danube Swabians.

We were also delighted to receive a beautiful gift basket from VIENNA FINE FOODS. This company has been donating food baskets for many years and we are truly grateful for their generosity. We are also grateful to our wonderful “pastry chefs”, our volunteer bakers that bring their wonderful home-made baked goods to the dance (or send them) and we in turn, offer to sell them to our guests. Eva Hergovich, the President of the Burgenlaender Club (Toronto), thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the evening. A special THANK YOU to Julie McCartin, who jumped in at the last minute as we were unexpectedly short of volunteers.

Das diesjährige Martinifest wurde am 17. November 2018 im ehemaligen Donauschwabenklub von Toronto abgehalten. Das Essen wurde von J.C. Banquet Hall zubereitet und schmeckte ganz grossartig. Dieses Jahr hatten wir eine neue Band DAS EDELWEISS TRIO aus Kitchener gebucht und sie kamen gut an.Eine grosse Überraschung war für unsere Gäste eine Kostprobe des Torontoer Operetta Theaters. Drei Künstler sangen bekannte Arien aus DIE FLEDERMAUS unter der Leitung des Direktors Guillermo Silva-Marin. Diese Operette wird dieses Jahr in Toronto aufgeführt. Der Direktor hatte auch zwei Freikarten und diese wurden von Herrn Baumann, dem ehemaligen Präsidenten der Donauschwaben gewonnen.Wir freuten uns, dass auch dieses Jahr VIENNA FINE FOODS einen Geschenkkorb spendierte. VIENNA FINE FOODS schenkt uns zu solchen Anlässen schon seit Jahren Geschenkkörbe und wir sind sehr dankbar dafür. Weiters sind wir auch unseren Mehlspeisköchinnen dankbar, die Jahr für Jahr zu Hause Mehlspeisen backen und diese zum Tanz bringen oder sie auch mit jemandem mitschicken wenn sie nicht selbst kommen können. Das sind rührende Gesten die wir sehr schätzen. Eva dankt allen herzlichst die zum Gelingen dieses Abends beigetragen haben.

Sadly, we have to report on yet another loss within our community.

On November 10, 2018, Otto Perl, age 91, passed away peacefully in his home with his wife Elsa by his side. Otto and Elsa were happily married for 65 years and the union was blessed with four children: Otto Jr., Jaclyn, Rick and Roy. He is also mourned by the partners of his children and by seven grandchildren.

Otto was originally from Podler, Southern Burgenland and he and Elsa were married 65 years ago in Mariazell. They established a loving home in Canada, and welcomed many of our countrymen as they arrived in the 50’s and 60’s. He will be greatly missed. Ruhe in Frieden, lieber Otto! Danke für deine Treue und Verbundenheit.

On November 12, 1918 Austria became a republic. This 100th anniversary of such a prolific event was commemorated in many ways in Austria. Let us report just on one of these celebrations:

On November 12th, 2018 a festive ceremony took place in the Vienna State Opera. Among many dignitaries, Austria’s President Alexander van der Bellen, Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Vice Chancellor Christian Strache, and Burgenland’s Governor Hans Niessl attended. It is of interest to note that special guests were also invited to this event: Holocaust survivors and students from all over Austria.

Maja Haderlap is a Carithian-Slovenian author. She received the Ingeborg Bachman award for her book : ENGEL DES VERGESSENS. Maja was chosen to deliver the speech (die Festrede). It was a moving testament to the principals of democracy. Democracy means, the Other may also be correct.

Die erste Republik Österreichs wurde am 12. November 1918 ausgerufen. Aus diesem Anlass fanden und finden eine Reihe von Festlichkeiten statt und wir möchten nur von einem Event berichten.

In der Wiener Staatsoper wurde am 12. November 2018 ein Festakt abgehalten, zu dem sich eine Reihe von Würdenträgern einfand. Unter anderem nahmen Österreichs Spitzenpolitiker wie Bundespräsident Alexander van der Bellen, Bundeskanzler Sebastian Kurz, Vizekanzler Christian Strache und Landeshauptmann Hans Niessl daran teil. Auch wurden besondere Gäste zu diesem Festakt eingeladen und das waren Überlebende des Holocaust und Studenten aus ganz Österreich.

Maja Haderlap, die Kärntner Slowenin gab die Festrede. Maja ist eine bekannte Schriftstellerin und wurde für ihr Buch ENGEL DES VERGESSENS mit dem Ingeborg Bachman Preis ausgezeichnet. Der Fokus der gesamten Feier stand unter dem Motto: Demokratie bedeutet, dass auch der Andere Recht haben kann.

“Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht” the world famous Christmas song was sung for the first time 200 years ago on December 24th, 1818, in the St. Nikola Kirche in Oberndorf, Salzburg, Austria. Veronica Krenn reports in the magazine ROT-WEISS-ROT about the historical background of those times and how it all came together. It also explains why it is called a “World-peace-song.” In 2011, this song was declared a Worls Heritage by UNESCO. In Austria, numerous exhibitions are commemorating the song and a play: “Meine Stille Nacht.” It had its debut on Nov. 24, 2018, in the Felsenreitschule, a theatre in the city Salzburg. John Debney, the film composer known for “Ice Age, and Sin City”, among other accomplishments, composed the music. Andreas Gergen is the producer. He is known from the musical The Sound of Music. The original song of Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht was written by Josef Mohr, the priest in Oberndorf at the time and Franz Gruber, who was the organist, composed the music.

Im Jahre 2011 wurde das Lied ins UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen. Unzählige Feiern und Ausstellungen finden zum Jubiläum dieses Weihnachtsliedes statt das von dem Geistlichen Josef Mohr geschrieben und dem Organist Franz Gruber vertont wurde. Selbst ein Bühnenstück “Meine Stille Nacht” wurde geschrieben und hatte am 24. November 2018 in der Felsenreitschule in Salzburg Premiere. Veronica Krenn meint, das brächte auch einen Hauch von “Broadway” nach Salzburg zumal der amerikanische Filmkomponist John Debney die Musik dazu komponierte und die Regie wurde von Andreas Gergen (The Sound of Music) übernommen.

Wir rollen und rollen… wird das jetzt endlich ein Kipferl??? Will this ever be a

Whenever we have a function, thanks to our wonderful pastry experts, we are in the fortunate position of being able to offer our guests authentic Austrian, home-made pastries. Many times, we were asked who prepared these cookies and cakes, or if we had the recipes for them.

Well, on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, there was an opportunity to watch how typical Austrian pastries are being prepared. What an amazing day this was! We gathered at St. Luke’s church in Thornhill, ON. Annie Leodolter (originally from Jabing), Emma Buczolits (originally from Langental), and Eva Hergovich (originally from Eisenstadt/Klingenbach) awaited “their students.”

Annie showed us how to make Topfenkrapferln (soft cheese cookies). She had already prepared the dough at home, and then demonstrated its prepared. After kneading, the dough has to rest, and Annie used the one brought from home and showed us how to complete the recipe. While the Topfenkrapferln were baking, it was Emma’s turn. Emma is known for her perfectly shaped Vanillekipferl; a very popular Austrian, crescent-shaped cookie. Especially at Christmas time, Vanillekipferl are always part of the Christmas baking. Emma also brought a dough from home, and showed us how it is being prepared. When we shaped the cookie, we tried to copy her perfection - but to no avail. Emma’s were instantly recognizable. Finally, Eva showed us how to make Zwetschkenknödel, plum dumplings. Usually, this recipe is made with potato dough, but Eva showed us how to make them with choux paste (the type of dough that is used to prepare éclairs).

The highlight of it all was eating these delicacies! Among all the fun and laughter, we realized that we just acquired a bit of Austrian culture that we’ll surely pass on to our children and grand-children.

Wann immer wir zusammenkommen, unsere Mehlspeisköchinnen verwöhnen uns mit köstlichen österreichischer Bäckereien die vor allem bei unseren anglosachsischen Freunden sehr beliebt sind. Am Samstag, dem 20. Oktober gab es eine Möglichkeit zu sehen und zu lernen, wie solche Bäckerein zustande kommen. Annie Leodolter, ursprünglich aus Jabing, Emma Buczolits, ursprünglich aus Langental und Eva Hergovich, ursprünglich aus Eisenstadt bzw. Klingenbach fuehrten vor, wie Topfenkrapferl, Vanillekipferl und Zwetschkenknödel zubereitet werden. Wir hatten so viel Spass! Neben all dem Gelächter wurde uns auch bewusst, dass wir mit so einer Veranstaltung der zweiten und dritten Generation ein bisschen von österreichischer Esskultur mitgeben konnten.

Just a quick comment to the choice of pictures that are published. Please be aware that we would like to include as many pictures from various groups of people as possible.

Unfortunately, this does not always work out. Please note that we are amateurs. We use our phones to take pictures, and during the day, this works quite well. At night however, it’s a “hit-and-miss” affair, and this is why “YOU” might not be in the photos.

So sorry! If you know of someone who would like to take on the voluntary job of taking pictures at our events, PLEASE direct him/her to us.

We are working on organizing the THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2019.

If you could please keep April 27th AND May 5th in mind;It will be one of these dates. Location to be announced.
