Welcome to Worship at St. Matthew’s January 22, 2017 Welcome to worship, education and Christian fellowship on a glorious winter morning! We invite you to greet those worshiping near you. God invites us to come before him in worship — and so we do this day. Let us focus solely on him for this brief time, to hear his Word and glorify our Savior, Jesus Christ. Worship Notes: Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross – as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught” in the net of God’s grace and mercy. Flowers at the altar are given by Leslie & Pat Gardner in memory of Denice Stingl. Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 8:30 service. If you are seated in the chapel and wish to come forward for communion please leave the chapel and join the center aisle line at any time during distribution. Gluten-free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you. Child for Baptism: (11:00) Evie Grace Gretebeck, child of Karissa & Kyle Gretebeck, Wauwatosa, was born April 2, 2016. Sponsors are Lacey Kleven and Lars Bonovich. Cross Lunch: The next Wednesday meal that we are responsible for is January 25, 2017. Cards with food needs will be handed out in worship on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Thank you for your strong support of this ministry. It is greatly appreciated! A library book has been given to the church library by Leslie & Pat Gardner in memory of Denice Stingl. Nursery News: Welcome Emily Chiesa who begins working as our Nursery Attendant today! Emily and her family are members of St. Matthew’s.

St. Matthew’s Foundation is a non-profit organization which invests and disburses funds for the benefit of initiatives se-lected by St. Matthews church, specifically scholarships and partnerships/benevolences. Donations to the Foundation are often made in honor of or in memory of a family member or friend. Another way to cre-ate a lasting influence on St. Matthews is by designating the Foundation as a beneficiary in your estate/life insurance plan-ning. For example, a family with two children could indicate each child as a beneficiary at 49% and the Foundation at 2%. Please consider this the next time you need to select beneficiaries for a policy or fund. Following is the informa-tion needed to do this:St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lu-theran Church Foundation, Inc.Entity ID #: 6S17449

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began this week on January 18 and was first observed in January, 1908. Celebrated in the chapel of a small Atonement Franciscan Convent of the Protestant Episcopal Church, on a remote hillside fifty miles from New York City, this new prayer movement caught the imagination of others beyond the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement to become an energetic movement that gradually blossomed into a worldwide observance involving many nations and millions of people.

Trade feelings of emptiness and depletion for a more personal fulfillment from knowing who Jesus is. Stop living like a slave to your circumstances by training your heart to embrace the life-giving freedom God wants for you. Gain a better understanding of how Jesus’ words 2,000 years ago are so very applicable to the answers we are searching for today. Based on the ‘I Am’ statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John we will dig into scripture in the workbook then meet each week to listen to the DVD teaching and share thoughts and questions with one another. The 6-week DVD based study will be held for 3 Wednesday evenings in February and 3 Tuesday evenings in March.
