RACHEL BARRETT
“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they
parted his raiment and cast lots.” Luke 23:34 KJV
In today’s state of cruelty and chaos, we often forget our duty and
responsibility to forgive in order to live the crucified life unto which we were called.
In neglecting to forgive, we also turn down the power behind its meaning and in
turn, produce negative and ungodly characteristics (i.e., anger, insecurity, worry,
depression, etc.).
My family has passed down a slew of generational curses that needed to be
broken simply by an act of forgiveness. Abuse was rampant in at least three
generations before me. I was unaware of the power behind and unexposed
generational curse until the age of sixteen. My older sister called me and informed
me that my father, whom I lived with and loved deeply, molested her (and in her
belief, both of us) from an early age of childhood. She exposed that he had gotten
her pregnant and that he forced her to abort during a “family vacation” to Florida in
which no other family members were allowed to attend.
Many things ran through my head. How could I not have known and
realized this was happening? On top of this, how could a father strip away a
daughter’s purity in such a way? I grew hatred for my father. I didn’t realize how
much free reign I was allowing the devil to have over my life. I allowed anger to
become a gateway into drug and alcohol abuse, sexual impurity, jail time and
multiple acts of crime.
Five years later, my father called asking for grace and forgiveness. Initially,
I was repulsed by his nerve to even ask such a thing. I was chest deep in sin and if
you ask me, it was all to the account of my father’s sin. Forgiveness wasn’t an
option. I was taking his sin and mine to the grave with me. Giving it to God sounded
too cliché. It wasn’t even an option.
It is easy to read my story and know that I need to forgive my father but
what if it was your child, wife or loved one? Would you just forgive the sin? Jesus
did. He begged to our heavenly Father on behalf of the soldiers and onlookers as
they mocked and beat him. He asked forgiveness for the disciples as they left His
sided during the crucifixion. He pled the blood over the daughters of Jerusalem as
they wept for Him in depression.
It is our obligation to forgive but it brings so much more to the plate. It
brings freedom from bondage. It collects no dust of other sins. It wipes the slate
clean
After I forgave my father, God used him to bring me to the Lord. Together
we nailed the generational curse to the cross, along with the grime attached to it.
It is time to forgive, let go and let God!
