Groundhog Day
by Publications B
February 2nd
is Groundhog Day. That is the
day each year when a groundhog is
supposed to come out of his winter den and
predict whether or not winter will be short
or long. The legend of the groundhog is
that if he sees his shadow, then there will
be six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t
see his shadow, then spring will come
early. The most famous groundhog is
named Punxsutawney Phil. He gets his
name from the town of Punxsutawney in
Pennsylvania, where he lives. Last year he
predicted an early spring. Boy was he
wrong! Here’s hoping spring is actually
early this year.
BASA Blog
Mark your calendars! The BASA pizza Party will be February 10th at the Baylor Center from 6:00 pm -8:00 pm. This year we have a DJ to make sure the music never stops. Flyers will be going home in backpacks so you can RSVP your pizza order and how many of your family will be attending.
Burger Baylor
Hello fellow gardeners! Another growing season is just around the corner. A big thank you to all who have helped maintain the Burger Baylor School Garden thus far! We are so excited to have this garden that provides fresh produce to Mother’s Pantry here in Inkster, as well as some of our Burger families. The garden serves as an outdoor classroom where students learn about the plant cycle, where does food come from, how to care for a garden, and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with our larger community. There are many small and large skill tasks that are done in the garden on a regular basis, which makes it possible for any one of our students to participate in. The garden produced over 1,700 pounds of fresh vegetables this past growing season (2016). That is 500 more pounds than our 2015 growing season. We were very fortunate with all the warm weather that we had. It allowed us to harvest late into November. Aside from the necessary upkeep, our garden is a fantastic place for our staff and students to reflect, relax, observe, and feel closer to nature. By working in the garden our students are contributing to the community. None of this would be possible without the help of the Lyman Foundation and Basa. Thank You for all of your support and generous donations. Thank You State Farm for the gardening gloves. Thank you Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency for the
donation of plants/seeds and sending a Master Gardener to help guide us. The generosity of all involved is heart -warming. Happy gardening, everyone!
Black History Month
by Aaron Grove
Black History Month is an annual
observance of the United States of
America, Canada, and United Kingdom
for remembrance of the important people
and events associated with people whose
ancestors were from Africa. It is
celebrated annually in the United
Kingdom in October. The United States
of America and Canada celebrate in
February. Before there was a Black
History Month in the United States of
America, historian Carter G. Woodson
and the Association of the Study of
Negro Life and History announced the
2nd
week of February to be Negro
History week. This week was chosen
because it coincided with the birthdays
of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and
Frederick Douglas of February 14. These
two dates had been celebrated together
in black communities since the late 19th
century.
This is a celebration of the African-
American History. The expansion of
Black History Week to Black History
Month was first proposed by the leaders
of the Black United Students at Kent
State University in February 1969. The
first celebration of Black History Month
took place at Kent State a year later in
February 1970. Black History Month
was first celebrated in the United
Kingdom in 1987.
BTC Volunteers at Forgotten Harvest
On January 23rd, the Young Women’s and Men’s Groups from Burger Transition Center volunteered at Forgotten Harvest. Forgotten Harvest “rescued” 40.9 million pounds of food last year by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from 800 sources, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, wholesale food distributors and other Health Department-approved sources. This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 250 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area. BTC students and staff bagged and labeled close to 5,000 pounds of cheese as part of a Service Learning project. We were there for a few hours and we left with happy hearts. Our students felt proud, excited and satisfied that they made a difference for those in need. This was just the beginning. We have plans to return to the warehouse and the farm. We look forward to helping the community again by being part of the Rescue Team!
What is the Circles program all about?
By Anthony Clark
The circle program is about different circles of relationships within the boundaries of our daily lives. The Purple Private circle is the first, or center circle in our circle of relationships. The private purple circle is a private place for me. I am the only person in my private purple circle. The Blue Hug circle is the second circle in our circle of relationships. The Blue Hug circle is about the family. The blue Hug circle is also about a sweetheart. We interviewed a student, Makala, she was asked what she was learning from the Purple Private circle? Her response was ’’To be private, It’s about me’’. Next we asked what you know of the Blue Hug circle so far? Her response was. “To be with our family and our sweetheart.’’ We interviewed teacher Amy Mullins and asked her the same two questions about Circles program. She responded ’’How to teach kid appropriately’’ and to the second question ’’You are close to your family. We also ask her What do you and your sweetheart like to do the most ? (If you have one). Mrs.Mullins said “Watch TV and movies”.
It has been exciting to learn about the first two circles in our school. Thank you to school leaders for showing us the Circles program.
Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood
by Branson Bellamy
Mister Roger’s Neighborhood was an American children's show. Mister Roger’s made its national television debut on February 19, 1968. The host, Fred Rogers, lived up to the educational aspect of his show, informing those of all ages about colors, numbers, and letters. I think it’s safe to assume that most people think Fred Rogers was a true children’s show icon. Fred Rogers even received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A lot of little kids watched this show, considering the fact I love little kids, I would highly recommend this show to little kids and the young at heart. Here are several quotes from Fred Rogers. “Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero to me.” “The connections we make in the course of a life-maybe that’s what heaven is”. “Love and trust, in the space between what’s said and what’s heard in our life, can make all the difference in the world.” “The child is in me still and sometimes not so still.’’ “The kingdom of God is for the broken-hearted.’’ “Discovering the truth about ourselves is a lifetime’s work, but it’s worth the effort.” ‘’Little by little we human beings are confronted with situations that give us more and more clues that we are not perfect.” “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” “Being able to resolve conflicts peacefully is one of the greatest strengths we can give our children.” “It’s very important, no matter
what you do professionally, to keep alive some of the healthy interests of your youth.” “Children’s play is not just kids’ stuff. Children’s play is rather the stuff of most future inventions.” “It’s good to be curious about many things.”
