TIPS AND TRICKS FOR REMEMBERING STUFF

LUNCH AND TOUR OF BEAR CAVE

Pack a lunch and join us on Wednesday, June 29, at 10:00 am, as we head to Bear Cave in Buchanan for a tour and picnic along the river. Bear Cave is the only cavern in the Great Lakes area. It was formed in “tufa rock” which is a secondary limestone. It is estimated that this particular bed of rock is at least 25,000 years old and is resting on a glacial drift deposited during the last ice age approximately 50,000 years ago.

Along the 40 foot winding stairway that leads visitors through the cave you will see stalactites, petrified leaves, and other peculiar shapes. The metal oxides of native ores color the entire cave. The cave holds quite a bit of significant history. It played a significant part in the Underground Railroad during the period of slavery. In 1875 the “loot” from an Ohio bank robbery was “deposited” in the cave. This became the inspiration for the 1903 silent film The Great Train Robbery. Note that cave entrance has four flights of stairs. This trip is no charge, but it is limited to first come, first served. Please sign up at the front desk and come see Buchanan’s Bear Cave.

Every time Norma Clem brings her pecan rolls to an event at the Senior Center, people ask for her recipe. So, here it is! It is easy to make and the recipe can easily be cut in half. Enjoy!

    Pecan Rolls

Two loaves of frozen bread dough 1 c. chopped pecans 4 T. butter, melted 6 T. sugar 2 t. cinnamon 2 small pkgs of regular (not instant) butterscotch pudding 1 stick of butter, melted 1 c. brown sugar Take frozen bread dough loaves from freezer to thaw overnight. Brush each with 2 T. melt-ed butter and sprinkle each with 3 T. sugar and 1 t. cinnamon. Roll into jelly roll. Cut each roll into 12 pieces and place on bed of pecans in each pan.

Sprinkle one package of pudding on top of each pan of rolls. Melt 1 stick of butter and dissolve in 1 c. brown sugar. Spoon over both pans of rolls, dividing equally. Let rise and bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until done. Turn out onto a plate quickly.

    THANK YOU!

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. ~ Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh

Calling all bakers! Our first Farmers’ Market bake sale of the season is on Saturday, June 25, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please bring your bake sale items to the center on Friday so we can get them ready to take to the market on Saturday morning. Look for our bake sale booth, and thank you for supporting the Buchanan Area Senior Center!

    FARMERS’ MARKET BAKE SALE

When Joann’s new granddaugh-ter spent three weeks in Memo-rial Hospital ’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she saw the need for little hats for the preemies. She put up a poster requesting knitted and crocheted hats for babies in the NICU unit, and our patrons got busy making hats of all colors,

shapes, and sizes. Answering the call in a big way, Dawnita Burgoyne, Deb Batson, and Linda Luhrsen brought in several, and the Fiber Friends group whipped up a bunch. Thank you, ladies, for putting your talents to work for these little ones. Pictured are some of the Fiber Friends and the hats they made. From left, Shirley Moore, Thelma Klug, Vi DePhillipe, Gil Robbins, and Beverly Cannoot.

    JUNE IS FOR WEDDINGS

Do you need help writing out checks for you bills or balancing your check-book? A representative from Edgewater Bank will be happy to help you, either at their Buchanan branch or here at the senior center. Call the

center at 695-7119 or Edgewater at 695-3884.

    HELP WITH YOUR BANKING

    FIBER FRIENDS MAKE BABY HATS

May was National Pet Month and our indoor tree featured patron’s pets and other animals, with two stuffed pink poodles topping it off! The June tree and table decoration theme is weddings. See if you can identify the couples in the wed-ding photos. We want to thank our deco-rating volunteers Leona Wonacott, Janis Sexton, Joan McGuire, and Pat Robbins, for another tree well done! Do you have theme ideas for our tree? Share them with the staff or Leona.

    DINNER AND A PLAY FUNDRAISER

The dinner and a play fundraiser with the Tin Shop Theatre was a great success, enjoyed by all who attended! The dinner was delicious and the play was so much fun. We want to thank the Tin Shop, the volunteers who helped with dinner, all of the sponsors, and everyone who attended. Thank you for your support!
