EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S LETTER | btpd.org | 3

Executive Director’s LetterDear Bourbonnais Township Park District Residents: As we say goodbye to summer, we get ready to say hello to the mSummer is my favorite season at Perry Farm Park. The park is full of visitors enjoying the animals, walking the trails, playing at the playground, and just basking in our glorious park tucked away in the heart of our community.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of the Exploration Station®….a children’s museum. The Bourbonnais Township Park District is very fortunate that this facility is part of our park district. The original vision was that of Marilyn O’Flaherty and a group of dedicated and inspired individuals. The museum started as a traveling gallery offering children an interactive museum experience at local schools and libraries. It was such a big success that plans were made for a permanent site not too long after the original vision took hold. On July 28th, 1990 a 2,400 square foot location was opened and the first weekend welcomed 1,400 visitors. This location stayed in operation until a 10,000 square foot facility was opened in the current location in October 2007. Over the past 8 years there have been many improvements implemented by Sarah Winkel and her team. Today the museum has 36,500 visitors annually! Children, their families and teachers, are very fortunate to have a world class children’s museum offering hands on exploration and discovery right here in our community. The park district is very thankful that Mrs. O’Flaherty and her team believed so strongly in their dream and were able to make it a reality. This community will benefit from their passion and hard work for many, many years to come. We are in the midst of planning a spectacular day of activities to celebrate this summer on Tuesday, July 28th. Stay tuned for more exciting details!

In April we said goodbye to a couple of outstanding volunteers that served as Board Commissioners for the past six years for our park district. We bid farewell to Commissioner Denny Lehnus and Commissioner Donna Brown. In their tenure, the park district accomplished many projects; enhancement of the Exploration Station, purchase and renovation of Diamond Point Park, renovations at the Recreation Station and the master plan at Willowhaven Interpretive Center. During this time, the park district also secured over $1.5 million in grants to assist in these renovations and updating of facilities. On behalf of the entire park district, I would like to thank both of them for spending their time with us over the past years. Personally, I would like to thank them for their service and commitment in what can be a thankless job.

New this summer, we are offering some exciting opportunities for budding young artists in our community with our new Fine Art classes. We have partnered with local artists from FEED to offer art classes and film classes for our community this summer. To kick it all off we will have our popular Art in the Park event on Saturday, June 6th. We will continue to offer our popular FunTime Day Camp, Nature Camp and many other weekly camps. As always, fun summer day trips are planned for both Cubs and White Sox fans. Again this summer on Friday, June 12th, we will host Family Fun Night at Perry Farm Park for a night under the stars watching a movie and enjoying family friendly activities. We are expanding the summer offerings to include a night under the stars at Diamond Point Park on Friday July 17th for a baseball movie and more family friendly activities. We want the community to remember our Splash Pad at Diamond Point Park is open daily until Labor Day from 10:00 AM to dusk for no charge - perfect for hot muggy days of summer.

A community favorite is our Summer Concert Series! Beginning the last Tuesday in June and happening every Tuesday in July. Check out the lineup in the brochure – we think you will be very pleased with the quality of entertainment. Concerts start at 7:00 PM on Tuesdays – bring your lawn chair and relax while you enjoy the nice long nights of summer.

I am happy to be able to update our residents about the OSLAD (Open Space Land Acquisition Development) grant that was previously mentioned in the fall brochure for refurbishing OSLAD Willowhaven Interpretative Center at Whispering Willows Park. The good news is we were approved for the grant. This is exciting news for our community as we will be building a dog park, stone amphitheater, disc golf course, picnic shelter, nature playground and many other amenities.

Take some time to browse our summer brochure and we hope you will spend some of your summer with us! If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or call me at 815-933-9905.
