INTRODUCTION

In the Gulf of Bothnia, near the port of Ajos a research project has been initi-ated in which a new solution for off-shore wind farm foundations is being piloted in 2009–2010. The applicabil-ity of the new technology, particularly in northern sea and winter conditions,

will be analyzed in a test foundation called Monopile. The ob-jective of the project is to develop a cost-effective foundation solution for extensive offshore wind power farms.

Dredging of Overburden, Drilling and Blasting

The project was commenced by dredging the overburden. The sediment layer covering the bedrock surface was removed with a backhoe dredger at level –7 metres. After this phase,

a cylinder-shaped pit was blasted in the sea bottom. The diameter of the pit was 5 metres and its depth 8 metres. The emptying of the pit was executed with a grab bucket and an airlift pump.

Installation of the Monopile Foundation Cylinder

The 100-tonne steel Monopile foundation cylinder was transported with the fl oating crane Nosto-Pekka. The cyl-inder was erected in the excavated pit to exact tolerances, after which it was cast in concrete both inside and outside.

The top of the Monopile foundation cylinder was at a level of +3 metres above sea level after casting.

Power Plant Tower Installation

On the Monopile foundation a power plant tower constructed of three body tubes was installed. The tubes were transported on a towable work platform to the foundation area. Tower tubes and concrete elements corresponding in weight to an actual engine room were lifted up to 80 metres. The installation work was done from Playmate, a specialized multipurpose drill plat-form.

Multi-Purpose Drill Platform Playmate

The upgraded multi-purpose drill platform Playmate, which has a bearing capacity of 1,000 tonnes, was used as the crane base in the installation of the tower tubes and elements. The versatile Playmate, which has been technically fully upgraded, also serves as a platform for piling and concreting as well as a drill platform for underwater drilling and blasting.
