“Sea and Music” offers not only a lot of music and crystal clear waters, but “more” of everything. The unique atmosphere on board provides music lovers

with unforgettable days: not only concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and our musical friends, but also an insight into the rehearsals and getting

acquainted with members of the orchestra and our guests. After the previous three wonderful trips, the

Vienna Philharmonic, together with the tour operator MM Reisegesellschaft, are looking forward to this

unique cruise on the western Mediterranean in 2016. The first musical highlight takes us, together with

Maestro Zubin Mehta, to the Florence Opera House. A little later the second concert stop in Barcelona

will delight us, namely the Palau de la Música–lead by our concertmaster Rainer Honeck. This architectural masterpiece on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites is certainly one of the most beautiful concert

halls in the world. I hope you enjoy this holiday for the eyes, ears and soul!

We have the great pleasure, as the organiser, to be putting together the fourth concert cruise with the Vienna Philharmonic as well as special artists such

as Zubin Mehta, Rainer Honeck, Thomas Hampson, Ramón Vargas and Bernarda Fink, in May 2016. Enjoy the unique proximity to the music and artists and let

yourself be pampered on board. There is much to discover on this journey, both on land and on board.

There is perhaps no other musical ensemble more closely associated with the history and tradition of European classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. Since its inception by Otto Nicolai in 1842, the

fascination that the orchestra has held for prominent composers and conductors, as well as for audiences worldwide, is based not only on a homogenous musical style carefully bequeathed from one generation to the next,

but also on its unique history and structure. The foremost ruling body of the organization is the orchestra itself. In accordance with Philharmonic statutes, only a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra can become a

member of the Vienna Philharmonic. Before joining the Philharmonic, one must first audition for a position with the State Opera Orchestra and then successfully complete a three year period before becoming eligible to

submit an application for membership in the association of the Vienna Philharmonic.

The Vienna Philharmonic performs approximately 110 concerts every season at home, presents Vienna Philharmonic Weeks in New York and Japan, and has participated in the Salzburg Festival since 1922. The orchestra makes yearly guest appearances in leading concert halls and festivals worldwide, presents the New Year‘s Concert,

which is broadcast in over 90 countries, and presents the free Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn, attracting up to 100,000 people annually. In 2014, the VPO received the coveted Birgit Nilsson Prize for outstanding

achievements and major contributions to the field of opera/concert, and the Herbert von Karajan Music Price 2014. Rolex has been the Exclusive Sponsor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008.

For over a decade, the VPO has given benefit concerts supporting humanitarian causes around the world. The musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic endeavor to implement the motto with which

Ludwig van Beethoven prefaced his Missasolemnis:

“From the heart, to the heart.”

Page 4: Broschure Sea & Music 2016

Born in 1961, Rainer Honeck started learning violin at the age of seven. He pursued his studies at the High School of

Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with Edith Bertschinger and privately with Alfred Staar (a member of the Vienna

Philharmonic Orchestra).

Rainer Honeck joined the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a first violinist in 1981, advancing to the position of concert master in the Opera

in 1984 and to that of concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992.

While his work with the orchestra remains central to his musical life, Rainer Honeck is a renowned soloist, with concert

appearances in Austria and in Europe, Japan and America. Personal highlights have been solo performances with the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra

of the Mariinsky Theatre under renowned conductors like Herbert Blomstedt, Adam Fischer, daniele gatti, Valery gergiev,

daniel Harding, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Andres Oroczo Estrada and Michael Tilson Thomas.

Recordings of note as concertmaster include live productions of Rimskij-Korsakow’s Scheherazade with the Vienna

Philharmonic and Seiji Ozawa (Philips) and Richard Strauss’ A Hero’s Life under Christian Thielemann (deutsche grammophon). He has further recorded dvorak’s and

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concertos with the Czech Philharmonic in Prague (Pony Canyon label), Franz Schubert’s Complete Works for Violin and Piano (Frohla Studios), a double Cd

of Mozart’s Violin Concertos released under the Orfeo label as well as an interesting “Rondo” Cd as soloist and leader

of the Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin (Sony).

Rainer Honeck’s intensive work as a chamber musician – founding member and leader of the Wiener Virtuosen, of the

Vienna String Soloists, primarius of the Ensemble Wien and since 2008 of the Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin – is also well

documented in radio, television and Cd productions.

All this “leading” experience, both as concert master and with these various chamber music ensembles, seemed a natural

stepping stone for him to extend his repertoire to encompass orchestral literature, conducting such orchestras as the

KioiSinfonietta, the nagoya Philharmonic, and the Yomiuri nippon Symphony Orchestra (Japan); the Malmö Symphony

Orchestra (Sweden), the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg (Russia), and the

Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonie.

Rainer Honeck plays the “ex-Hämmerle” Stradivarius violin (1709); the instrument is a loan from the Austrian

national Bank.

Zubin Mehta was born in 1936 in Bombay and received his first musical education under his father’s guidance. After a short

period of pre-medical studies, he left for Vienna in 1954 where he eventually entered the conducting programme under Hans Swarowsky at the Akademie für Musik. Zubin Mehta won the

Liverpool International Conducting Competition and was also a prize-winner of the summer academy at Tanglewood. By 1961 he

had already conducted the Vienna, Berlin and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras. Recently he celebrated 50 years of musical

collaboration with all three ensembles. Zubin Mehta was Music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and also assumed

the Music directorship of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra; later he was appointed Music Adviser to the Israel Philharmonic

Orchestra and was made Music director of that orchestra. In 1981 the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra awarded him the title of Music director for life. Zubin Mehta has conducted over three thousand concerts with this extraordinary ensemble. From 1978 – 1991 he was Music director of the new York Philharmonic, the longest in the orchestra’s history. Since 1985, he has been chief conductor

of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. Zubin Mehta made his debut as an opera conductor in Montreal

in 1963. Since then he has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera new York, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House,

Covent garden, La Scala Milano, and the opera houses of Chicago and Florence as well as at the Salzburg Festival. Between 1998

and 2006 he was Music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In October 2006 he opened the Palau de les Arts Reina

Sofia in Valencia as president of the annual Festival del Mediterrani. Zubin Mehta holds the “nikisch-Ring” bequeathed to him by Karl

Böhm. He is an honorary citizen of both Florence and Tel Aviv and was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera in

1997, of the Bavarian State Opera in 2006 and of the gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Wien in 2007. The title of “Honorary

Conductor” was bestowed on him by the following orchestras: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (2001), Munich Philharmonic

Orchestra (2004), Los Angeles Philharmonic (2006), Teatrodel Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (2006), Staatskapelle Berlin (2014) and Bavarian State Orchestra (2006). In October 2008 Zubin Mehta was honoured by the Japanese Imperial Family with the “Praemium Imperiale”. In March 2011 Zubin Mehta received a

special distinction, in getting a star on the Hollywood Boulevard. The Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal

Republic of germany was bestowed on him in July 2012. The Indian government honoured him in September 2013 with the “Tagore Award for cultural harmony” which a year earlier was awarded to

Ravi Shankar. Zubin Mehta continues to support the discovery and furtherance of musical talents all over the world. Together with his brother Zarin he is a co-chairman of the Mehli Mehta Music

Foundation in Bombay where more than 200 children are educated in Western Classical Music. The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music

in Tel Aviv develops young talent in Israel and is closely related to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, as is a new project of teaching

young Arab Israelis in the cities of Shwaram and nazareth with local teachers and members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Italy. Enjoy the Italian way of life. La vita è bella!

Shuttle buses will take you to the concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Florence Opera House. Zubin Mehta

views of the Mediterranean.

Nice provides a beautiful contrast with its great rchitectural monuments. Relax in the elegant Cours Saleya

for art and architecture lovers. Here the outstanding architect Antoni Gaudí created breathtaking monuments

such as the Park Guell and the unfinished Sagrada Família. But also museums with fascinating works by Joan Miró

and Pablo Picasso await you here. In addition, the Catalan cuisine will delight you with its delicious tapas.

In the evening, shuttle buses take you to the Vienna Philharmonic concert at the Palau de la Música. Look
