Governor of NSW visits WCSMeeting the GovernorOur hands are cold and clammy. Our legs are shaking. In come the cars with flags and the crown number plates. The Governor is coming. This is the equivalent of meeting the king or queen. The governor and his wife walked in with all of the other dignitaries. “Hello Your Excellency and Mrs Hurley,” Mr McGrath exclaimed, shaking the Governor and Mrs Hurley’s hands. We were next. “Good morning, Your Excellency. Good morning, Mrs Hurley,” we said in our most confident (maybe with a bit of a stutter) voice. Well the best we could manage. We were petrified and had butterflies in our stomach, but we didn’t need to be petrified at all. The Governor and Mrs Hurley were perfectly nice. So we put our petrified feelings behind us, had photos taken and went to 4/5B so they could all watch a science lesson with Mr Booth and Miss Jones from the high school. The Governor and Mrs Hurley were very interested and asked us lots of questions that we answered with ease. I guess all of our butterflies were a waste of time. We will both remember this moment for a very long time.

We were honoured this week to welcome His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales, accompanied by his wife Mrs Linda Hurley.

His Excellency, as Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE), presented Science and Technology Education Leveraging Relevance (STELR) equipment and a Certificate of Appreciation to School Principal and Students of Wadalba Community School, in celebration of the school becoming the 600th STELR school in Australia. The STELR Project is a key education initiative run by ATSE and designed to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths education across Australia.

His Excellency visited our Y4/5 Primary class who were investigating solids, liquids and gases as part of their Science lesson team taught by Mr Booth (Primary) and Ms Jones (Secondary Science). Students explored the concept using ingredients to make ice-cream.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the visit memorable.

To never give up and keep trying is an awesome skill to have and I think that I will personally do well with it. My family and my parents help me to keep trying and always tell me to never give up. Imagine if you have a test to complete and its really hard. Don’t say “I can’t do it”, say “I can’t do it yet”. - Tyla Cassin

This week’s motivated learner focus is “Never Give Up! Keep Trying”. This topic means never giving up on yourself and keep going on, keep trying, don’t stop. This means to me that we should keep believing in ourselves, accept every challenge like it’s a rainy day with a solution of a rainbow. Don’t say you can’t, say you can!!!! Believe in yourself and happy things will come. - Mikayla Taylor.

Across K-6 we have been working on improving writing. We are implementing a program called ‘7 Steps to Writing Success.’ Last fortnight all classes worked on using Sizzling Starts at the beginning of their writing to engage the reader. This week students K-6 have been ‘Tightening Tension,’ teaching them to use strategies to build tension in their writing. Below are 3 examples of ‘Tightening Tension’ from Year 6 students.

3, 2, 1.... I feel hands push me off the edge of the bridge, my hair attacks me. A sigh of regret escapes me. I can’t breathe. I can’t see anything because I’m going so fast. All I can hear is air whizzing past my ears. I can’t believe I’m doing this! But then, I hear something snap.....

by Rebecca Flatt

Sweat was running down my face as I looked down from the bridge. I take a breath that may be my last. I’m shaking so much that I can’t feel any bones in my body. Here I go in 3, 2, 1, bang! I can smell the air running up my nostrils and sweat dripping from my face. Then I can’t feel anything as I hear a snap!

by Josh Kelley

BMXing on top of a gigantic mountain. I am about to complete the impossible act. Riding down the belly of the beast, so close to achieving what I came here to do. I pedal like lightning. The fresh air is slapping me in the face. Adrenaline pumping through my veins. I can hear the cheers of fans and that sweet taste of victory as I cross the line.

Last week several students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 competed in the school final for the Premier’s Spelling Bee. This is an annual competition that provides opportunities for students across NSW to learn new words and explore the English language in an interesting and challenging way. These students had been selected for the final by showing off their spelling skills in class spelling bees. We would like to congratulate all students for showing the confidence to compete in the final on stage in the Hall.

A special congratulations to the following students, who won their competitions and will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee final at Chittaway Bay Public School on Monday 4th September.

This week, Ms Sanday came to do some writing in 4/5B and was very impressed with what they were able to produce. Students were asked to write a few sentences filled with persuasive language that would encourage people to come to Wadalba Community School. Here are five samples from around the class.

“Looking for an incredible paradise that provides a wonderful education? What about kind and honest teachers that help you in every situation? Then come on down to the most thrilling and fantastic school in the world, Wadalba Community School.” Semi Leweniqila

“Enjoy our incredibly safe school where children explore the extraordinary farm with our new attractive baby piglets. Each and every one of our children are fantastically famous in their own way. We have a variety of different subjects like art, science, maths and much much more.” Aurora Cooper

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21 August and 13 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the non-consent form. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

If you have a student moving from Year 6 into Year 7 please make sure that you have returned your Year 7 enrolment forms as these are now due. If you require a new form please contact the front office.

In the Spotlight

Book Week is fast approaching (Week 6) and our book character/theme dress-up parade will be held on Friday 25th August.

Our parade will take place first thing in the morning after roll call. Parents are invited to join in the celebrations by watching the parade from the area outside our primary hall. Small prizes will be given for the most effective costumes but costumes do not have to be too elaborate as participation and having fun is the most important aspect of this occasion.

Students are being encouraged to either dress as a character in a book or to dress in a creative way that represents a book they have read or would like to read. It is always fun to guess the title of the book from the way students have dressed themselves.

Thank you for all your support as we encourage reading and a love of books. Thank you also to all parents who supported our Book Fair last week by buying books and merchandise. We have earned a commission of just over $950, which enables us to continue to stock our library with exciting books for your children to borrow.

After an outstanding victory from the first game in the PSSA draw against Tuggerah PS, the WCS Primary Boys Hockey team were ready to put their skills to the test in the next round.

On Friday 4th August, the team once again played on home turf at the Wyong Hockey Complex against Gymea Bay PS. Eager to continue their strong lead in the competition, the boys demonstrated excellent teamwork, communicating with each other on the field and hitting some great goals. With cheers from the sidelines from our supportive families, Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Farrelly, the boys came out with yet another fantastic victory and score of 6 - 0.

A big thank you to our high school students, Alex and Bailey, who did a wonderful job umpiring and helping both teams to understand the game rules.

Another huge thank you to Mr Swift, who assisted in transporting some of our students, supplying the goalie gear and helping Miss Bennett with closing up the fields after the game.

Congratulations to the boys for their second win in the competition! They are now moving onto the quarter finals and are extremely excited to play their next round in the upcoming weeks against a North Coast team.

Athletics CarnivalREADY SET GO!

Hearts racing, legs pumping, eyes ahead, our first race was underway. With that the butterflies eased. Last Thursday was our annual school athletics carnival. With the new venue the crowd rolled in – what a pleasing sight to see so many spectators supporting those beaming little faces. The weather God was also good to us and delivered a beautiful blue sky. The smell of bacon and eggs wafted over the ground and made our tummies rumble. Our dedicated parent helpers always on the front line – we are so thankful for your effort’s.

As the day rolled on many showed their sporting prowess whether in running, shotput, long jump, discus and high jump. With crowd chanting and the buzz around the field a few records were broken. The day drew to a close and around 50 of our budding athletes will now head off to compete at our zone carnival at Mingara on Thursday, 24 August. Good luck to all our Wadalba competitors.
