The community living in Maboloka village – just outside the Brits area of the North West – recently came face to face with the effects of the floods that have left behind a trail of destruc-tion. On March 10, schoolchildren and teachers in the area were forced to skip classes as they could not cross a bridge that has been almost completely swept away by the torrent. Even cars that usually rely on the bridge were left stranded on either side as it proved too much of a life-threatening risk to cross over from one side to the other. Thanks to the efforts of community members and volunteers – who later set about repairing the bridge with sand and stones – a temporary path was constructed, allowing students, teachers and even cars to carefully make their way to the other side.“The biggest challenge we are now having is that the community members who let us use the bridge to get to the other side force us to pay when we want to return to the other side,” Mr.

Morake, a teacher told, Leseding News. Councilor of ward 6 in Maboloka – which falls under the Madibeng local Municipality – Betty Mahlaole castigated these community members trying to make money out of people’s desperation. “These people want money for their own pockets. They are not sent by the municipality or the councilor and it is very disturbing when we hear these things,” the councilor said. “That bridge is very dangerous to cross and an alternative road will have to be built so that people are safe and students will be able to attend school,” she added. “We have discussed about the collapsed bridge with the stakeholders in Bojanala after the inci-dent. “The department of public works has been informed about the bridge and they are on site waiting for the rain to stop so that they can begin with the reconstruction process,” she said. “We want the students of Mmadikete Secondary can attend their schooling without any interrup-tions,” said Mahlaole.

The police in Brits are eager to locate the whereabouts of Moses Mosupe Mawasha (24), who is wanted in connection with theft and assault (GBH) cases.

The police are urging members of the public to assist them to trace Mawasha, who is also wanted in relation to a case of electrical cable theft. The case of theft was opened on 13 February 2011 in Brits while the assault GBH case was reported to the police on 29 February 2013 at Sonop School. To date, the police have not been able to trace the whereabouts of Mawasha.“On the Assault Case, the suspect assaulted the complainant for not allowing him to sit in her lap,” Mpeile Talane of SAPS in Brits said. “On the other offence, the suspect was caught stealing Electrical Cable at Cash Build in Platinum Mall (Brits),” he added. Talane appealed to members of the community to come forward with any information related to the whereabouts of the suspect so that he can be arrested. “Any positive information can be supplied to the Investigating Officer Constable Aubrey Masongwa on 078 871 4692 or 012 381 6033,” Talane said. Meanwhile, the police in Brits recently arrested

nine suspects during separate, raiding operations in various areas of the town. All the suspects that have been apprehended are

aged between 18 and 25. “The cases which were opened against the arrested suspects include shoplifting, theft, assault (GBH), malicious damage to property and housebreaking. “The suspects are due to appear in court soon and we are carrying out further investigations,” he added.

Calls to find a lasting solution to the recent protests that erupted in Majakaneng near Brits were made during the burial of a 3-month old baby that died after allegedly inhaling teargas smoke during the mayhem. The protests – which were sparked by residents demanding better service delivery from the under fire Madibeng Local Municipality – are also becoming a platform for clashes between political parties, particularly those between the ANC and the EFF.During one incident, that saw police using teargas to quell the clashes, 3-month-old baby Keamogetswe died after it allegedly inhaled the fumes. According to residents living in the area, this was after a teargas canister landed near the shack where the baby was sleeping in. This is said to have occurred while the Public Order Police (POP) was dispersing violent

protesters. On March 8, there was no violence as mourners around Madibeng gathered to pay their last respects to baby Keamogetswe during a burial ceremony. Stanley Komane, a political activist in the Bojanala Region, condemned the killing of the baby. “It seems as if the police are targeting Madibeng residents. We have seen that in Mothotlung and now it is in Majakaneng. “We will support this family until we see Justice,” said Komane.Keamogetswe’s grandmother – Joyce Kunene – also condemned the killing of his grandson: “I wish to see justice on the matter.” Mourners were concerned that none of the officials from the Madibeng local Municipality attended the funeral to console the family of the little boy.

Molebogeng Thekiso – better known in music circles as Malebza de’DJ – is playing a huge role in helping other upcoming artists in Rustenburg and the surrounding areas to find their feet in the industry. The young DJ – who is making her name in Gauteng – hopes the 2014 edition of the Rustenburg International Music and Lifestyle Festival will play a huge role in showcasing and supporting upcoming talent.“I have a couple of up and coming DJs whom I groom and two of them are now studying Dj production at Soul Candy DJ School,” Molebogeng told Leseding News. “I motivate them, share marketing ideas with them and I usually take them with

me to some of my gigs because being a DJ is not just about playing music, its about knowing what the crowd loves and enjoys,” she added. “I would love to be part of Rustenburg Music Festival. The one thing I still need to accomplish is to play a role in the growth of our arts and culture.”Having done gigs at places such as Passmore pub in Ledig, Pats Pub in Phokeng, Triggers Pub and Club Tsietsi in Mabeeskraal, Molebogeng feels that Rustenburg and Brits has a lot of untapped potential in the arts. “The response that I got was great. I even received call backs from some of these places which means even the owners themselves were happy about my performance “I would love to go back to Triggers Pub in Maumong Rustenburg and Club Tsietsi in Mabeeskraal, both these

places have a good client base and they have the potential to host on point and spectacular gigs, their client base is amazing,” she said. According to her own assessment, Rustenburg and the North West in general is not too far behind when it comes to opportunities in the music industry. “The only difference between Johannesburg and Rustenburg in terms of exposure is that Jozi has more opportunities, it has more clubs and many television and radio stations are based in Johannesburg, which is an advantage,” she abserved. “We are on our way there because we now have an emerging media capable of putting us on the map,” she further explained.

PLATINUM PEOPLE

Those in the know say a marriage will only become successful through dedication, tolerance, patience love and a selfless attitude from the two people involved.

It is always a moment to savour – therefore – when a couple manages to celebrate 50 years of tying the knot. Pretoria couple Harry and Magda Strydom recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in style by spending time at the luxurious Sun City resort. It was a special moment for the two as they relived the experiences and memories that have become an inseparable part of their lives for the last half a century. But their plans to celebrate quietly at the Sun Vacation Club, where they have a lot of fond memories, were upended the moment the staff learnt of the reason for their visit. Unbeknown to the couple, Sun City Resort staff sprang into action planning a celebration that the couple would never forget.Nobody was more surprised than the Strydoms when they found themselves whisked away in a limousine to the Palace of the Lost City.

O n arrival they were escorted to the

Palace Gazebo in the midst of the plush Palace gardens, where they discovered that a private dinner had been set especially for them complete with champagne and a personalised chocolate cake. And to mark the occasion they were presented with a certificate custom-designed to commemorate their golden wedding anniversary.Narrating how they came to know each other, the couple explained to the staff that they had grown

up together, attending the same school and Church. Their romance was ignited one day when Harry surprised Magda by visiting her in hospital. This was after Magda had broken a finger. They got married in 1963 and today, they have three children and two grandchildren. Speaking about the way they were surprised by the Sun City staff, Harry and Magda said: “We lack the appropriate

words to express our sincere appreciation to Sun City for an unforgettable surprise and a wonderful and special evening. “We were treated like royalty and would like to give the team that put our evening together a 12-star rating. The experience will be cherished as one of the outstanding moments in our 50 years of marriage.”Good service in the hospitality industry is all about adding value to the visitor experience. In the case of Harry and Magda Strydom, they are unlikely to forget their special day in a hurry.

It is alleged that the three men were armed with a knife when they arrived at the premises before stabbing a security officer on duty. On Friday, South Africa observed Human Rights Day at a time when the country is getting ready for the 2014 national and provincial elections – to be held on 7 May.

Issues related to service delivery such as access to water and electricity as well as the ongoing strikes in the mining sector have – whether by design or otherwise – dominated the countdown to these elections in Brits, Rustenburg and other areas. In Brits, particularly, the challenges being faced by the Madibeng Local Municipality in providing water to its residents have sparked protests whose effects have claimed the life of a 3-month old baby. The human rights barometer is also being tested within the mining sector as striking workers continue their relentless push for higher wages. As we inch towards the date of the elections, such issues are bound to become more prominent as the call by eligible voters for those vying for political office to uphold human rights in the implementation of their policies grows louder. In the pursuit of “our rights”, communities also fail to realize that upholding human rights is a responsibility that all of us must carry. A historical perspectiveParts of the Bill of Rights and the South

African constitution consider human rights on the grounds of freedom, justice and peace. This is in line with the 30 articles of human rights contained in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Apart from addressing the country’s historical past of inequality, the Bill of Rights (and the South African constitution) also makes a provision for the democratic values of human dignity, equality and freedom.Human Rights Day in South Africa is strongly linked with the events of 21 March 1960 when 69 people died and 180 were wounded after police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered to protest against the notorious Pass laws. In 1956 women of all races protested against Pass law requirements, when 20 000 women of all races marched to Pretoria. These and other protests eventually led to the election of a democratically elected government in 1994, after which 21 March was declared Human Rights Day. Rights and Responsibilities Human Rights Day serves as a reminder to everyone about the suffering and loss of life that were part and parcel of the struggle for human rights in South Africa. Apart from ensuring that modern forms of slavery such as human trafficking and forced labour are addressed and eradicated,

upholding human rights also involves letting people know about what their rights are. The Bill of Rights guarantees everyone the right to life, equality, human dignity, citizenship and security. It also entitles people to freedom of assembly, association, belief and expression. The right to demonstrate, picket and petition and the right to be free of forced labour, servitude and slavery are also guaranteed. Additionally, there are specific laws that have been put in place to safeguard women and protect children. In the context of the upheavals in Madibeng and the mining sector, communities and workers striving for an improvement in their day to day life also have a duty to uphold the rights of other people – especially those sharing a different view from their own. The quest for human rights is defeated when the life of a baby, or anyone’s life for that matter, is taken away because of incidents related to political clashes. The quest for human rights is defeated when a worker in the mining sector, who is the breadwinner in a family of four, is violently prevented from going to work by his own colleagues and forced to accept their agenda. The quest for human rights will be defeated if everyone does not play their part in upholding these fundamentals.

SPORTSPORT

It was a hive of activity at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on 15 March as athletes converged to compete in this year’s edition of the Athletics North West North (ANWN) provincial championships.Despite the cloudy skies and the threat of rain showers, the athletes braved these uncertain weather conditions to take part in their respective disciplines. For the track events, athletes competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m (short distances), 1500m, 3000m, 1500m as well as the 10 000m (long distances). For the field events, competitors participated in the long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discuss, javelin and hammer throw.ANWN chairperson for track and field, Suzan Molobye-Milanzi, explained the importance of the event in an interview with Leseding News “This is a provincial event so it is very special to us. We will select our representatives for the national event,” she said. “We have sub-youth, youth, juniors, seniors and U23s taking part. This is in preparation for the ASA (Athletics South Africa) nationals. “For the sub-youth, youth, juniors and under 23s, the nationals will be held in Stellenbosch and Western Cape on 3, 4 and 5 April. Our senior nationals will be held on 11 and 12 April at Tuks,” she added. She said the turnout, in terms of the numbers of athletes and the crowd that came to witness the events, could have been higher if the weather conditions had been more favorable. “We are happy with the turnout but I think the heavy rains made a number of people stay at home. “Our offices are at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg so those who might have missed this event but would like to compete in the other events must get in touch with us,” she said.

WINNER: Claude Eksteen claimed victory in the IMPI Elite Men’s Race. (PHOTO: ERIK VERMEULEN/ ADVENTURE)

Over 2 000 brave sportsmen (and women) thronged the Van Gaalens Cheese Farm in the Hartebeesport area of the North West on 15 March to compete in the IMPI Challenge. In the men’s race, Claude Eksteen – winner of the previous edition of the race – emerged victorious once again. Eksteen completed the 20km IMPI Elite Race in an impressive time of 01 hour 44 minutes 31 seconds. “Today was really good,” he said after the race. “I’ve competed at the last two IMPI’s, so I’m familiar with the course which always helps. The rain however has made the course muddy and more slippery. “For the first time this year I felt really good, which is great as things are looking up for me. There was some tough competition today, but in the end you focus on yourself and on the obstacles. The IMPI Challenge is relaxed, fun, has a nice atmosphere and no stress,” he added. Sudan Neeb came in second, while Pieter Joubert finished third. Carla Van Huyssteen claimed victory in the IMPI Elite Women’s Race – crossing the finish line first in a well-

deserved time of 02 hours 14 minutes 35 seconds. “The IMPI focuses more on trail running and features a lot of natural obstacles like river crossings and fallen logs that need to be crawled under,” she after the race. “Other obstacle races, however, tend to focus more on power and I find that training for these obstacle races actually makes me slower. “The IMPI Elite Race features a nice combination of trail running and obstacles and actually complements my training. This is my first IMPI Race and I am very impressed. “There is a very nice vibe in the festival village, people are relaxed and focused on having a fun day out,” she explained. Anita O’Brien came in second, while Nicolette Griffioen finished third. Results of the top 5 elite finishers: Elite men’s – 1. Claude Eksteen (1.44.31), 2. Sudan Neeb (1.57.18), 3. Pieter Joubert (2.02.42), 4. Liam Wilson (2.11.37), 5. Colin Saffy (2.13.30). Elite women – 1. Carla Van Huyssteen (2.14.35), 2. Anita O’Brien (2.17.46), 3. Nicolette Griffioen (2.19.09), 4. Jetaime Ribbink (2.42.25), 5. Natalie Romea (2.52.32).
