“Wat vir ‘n gat is dit wat jy so woes grawe en dit hier in jou erf?” vra ek vir Pitte laas Saterdag. “Dit lyk asof jy ‘n bank wil beroof! Of soek jy die Kruger miljoene?” Ek staan maar so bietjie rond en bekyk die spulletjie so van die kant af. “Ek het besluit hier moet ‘n nuwe fontein kom,” sê Pitte terwyl hy stoei met die pik en graaf. Ek wil graag help, maar ek weerhou my daarvan omrede ek weet hoe Pitte oor my hulp in sy tuin voel. En buitendien is ek te swaar vir ligte werk, en te lig vir swaar werk. So, ek staan maar net en hoop ek kry iets om vir julle te skryf, want uit my eie ervaring sal ek dit nooit gedoen kry nie.“Mannie kyk,” en hy loer vir my oor die rand van die gat wat hy besig is om met dik plastiek uit te voer, “Jy is besig om my te pla. Ek is besig. En buitendien is hier ook nie jamtertjies of koekies nie.” Ek sug. Vriendskappe kan soms veeleisend raak. “Vat bietjie ‘n blaaskans en dan vertel jy vir my van die fontein wat jy besig is om te bou. ‘Seblief man. Die maand is amper om en Marietjie is op my case en ek het niks om oor te skryf nie,” pleit ek. Pitte sug diep en vee oor sy bles. Gelukkig kom Susan daar aan met koffi e, en sowaar ‘n paar jamtertjies! Ek kan my geluk nie glo nie.Ek vat die skinkbord by Susan en ons skuif koelte toe. Sommer so op die gras gaan sit ons en ek werk die eerste tertjie in. “Daar is ‘n duisend en een maniere om ‘n fontein te bou,” begin Pitte. Jy moet besluit wat jy wil hê en in jou kop moet daar ‘n prentjie wees van wat jy wil bereik. Die maklikste is

om na Style Dekor toe te ry en een van die baie fonteine te koop wat daar staan en dit in jou tuin te installeer. Daar is baie mooi fonteine, maar ongelukkig gaan jou fontein dan lyk soos jou buurman s’n oorkant die straat. Om dit bietjie anders te laat lyk kan jy roesverf koop en dit aansit. Dit lyk dan soos ‘n gietyster kunswerk. Of jy koop ‘n klomp plat glas albasters en plak dit op die fontein vas met silikon en dit lyk weer heeltemal anders. Ek hou daarvan om my eie ding te doen. ‘n Bietjie van die en ‘n bietjie van daai en my fontein is uniek. Ander ouens kan weer by my kom afkyk, maar ek is tevrede dat hulle dit nie heeltemal soos myne gaan maak nie. Hierdie een waarmee ek nou besig is, bestaan uit ‘n gat in die grond; so ongeveer 500mm diep. Heel onder gooi ek ‘n laag riviersand om te keer dat die klippies dalk die plastiek stukkend steek. Dan gooi ek die plastiek binne in die gat en druk die kante mooi vas. Op die wal pak ek die rand met klippe vas sodat die wind dit nie wegwaai nie. Jy kan meer as een laag insit as jy wil. Dit maak net die fontein meer waterdig as die klippies dalk deur die plastiek steek. Sien jy daardie stukke treinspoor sleepers wat daar lê,” en hy beduie na ‘n hoop sleeper stukke wat eenkant lê. “Daardie goed is voos, man!” sê ek onthuts. Ek kry die gevoel dat Pitte met my óf die gek skeer, óf my intelligensie onderskat. Net om hom te straf eet ek sommer op die plek nog drie tertjies op. “Daardie goed makeer niks! Daar is ‘n stuk beton wat ek gegiet het met ‘n pyp in die middel vas. Dis sodat die sleeperstukke onder kan bly en nie dryf nie. Ek het reeds 20mm gate deur daardie sleeperstukke geboor. Nou gaan

ek daardie sleepers opmekaar stapel en daardie pompie opkoppel. Jy sal sien hoe mooi is dit.” “Nou maak dat ek sien,” sê ek en vat nog tertjies vir die pad. Dis ver na die gat toe. Tenminste tien meter!Pitte sit die stuk beton mooi in die middel van die gat neer en ek gee vir hom die stukke sleepers aan. “Dit lyk of die hout geborsel is,” sê ek vir hom. “Ja,” sê hy. “As jy dit nie borsel nie, gaan die water vol los stukkies hout word wat net die pompie gaan verstop.” Ek kyk hoedat Pitte die stukke sleepers behendig opmekaar stapel met die pyp in die middel. Ek moet erken; dit lyk nogal fl ippen orraait, hoor! “Bring solank die tuinslang nader terwyl ek die pompie koppel,” order Pitte my. Ek maak soos hy gevra het. Hy klim uit die gat uit en ek maak die kraan oop. Terwyl die water inloop, pak hy betonblokke in ‘n sirkel al op die rand van die gat. Die fontein word vir my al hoe mooier. Die grond wat uit die gat gekom het werk hy mooi gelyk en hy meng ‘n klomp kompos in. “Gee vir my daardie Mondogras aan wat daar staan,” order hy my weer. Ek gee vir hom die gras aan. Ek kyk asof in vervoering hoe hy die gate maak en die gras om die blokke plant. ‘n Mens sal nooit sê hier was netnou net ‘n gelyk stuk aarde nie. Hy maak die kraan toe en skakel die pompie aan. Die water borrel by die pyp uit en kabbel oor die stukke hout. Ek luister na die geluid van die lopende water. Dit bring ‘n rustigheid in my. Amper soos Koning Saul as Dawid vir hom op sy harp gespeel het. Ek sug. Dis baie mooi.

Volgende maand gesels ons verder oor fonteine in die tuin. Lekker tuinmaak!!
