It’s July, we’re creeping ever closer to one of our most looked-forward-to events; National Championships! The British Taekwondo National Championships are set to take place 12th & 13th September 2015. Already, we’re gearing up for the huge event. As always, we want to ensure that everyone is up to speed on all they may need to know. ETU changes in GAL/GOL have meant that Senior Athletes will now need a Global Athlete Licence in order to compete at all future National Championships. However, be sure to note that this only applies to those competing in Advanced Categories. Contact Membership Services to ensure you get your GAL before time runs out. (No later than 31st July) From 2015, the British Taekwondo National Championships shall be seeded using a league system in all Cadet, Junior and Senior Advanced groups. Do be sure to read full information regarding seeding updates. Go here to do so. It’s fair to say we’re more than excited for September to arrive. Especially, because this event will see the first National Championships to include various Para Categories! We’re delighted to direct all who are interested to this additional information regarding Para-Taekwondo at the National Championships.

A huge congrats, we look forward to recognising
more clubs in future.
Good luck Mike! Mike McKenzie has decided to leave the
role of Development Officer at British
Taekwondo, to concentrate his efforts
on building his network of Quest
clubs. While this leaves a temporary gap
in the Development Team, we know that
Mike will be doing some excellent
development work in his own clubs to
grow membership and access
funding. We want to take this
opportunity to thank Mike for his hard
work over the last 2½ years and wish him
the very best of luck in the future! Mike
will remain a key member of the MATT
Team and you will see him at Seminars,
Grading Events and Competitions up
and down the UK!
B r o n z e B l i s s At European Poomsae Championships
This month, our fantastic British Taekwondo Poomsae team stepped onto the European stage, having trained hard for the long-awaited World Event. And, arriving in Belgrade, the grueling journey to Serbia hadn’t sapped the team’s drive to continue training hard at every opportunity. However, day one saw a disappointing start for GB, as medal-favourite Henry Chiu missed out on a spot in the finals by a frustrating 0.3, as a nervous foot movement took a medal out of contention. Guntar Dwairman upped the tempo on Day two, pushing through rounds to make his first European finals. His 3rd time at the event, and now in the under 30 division, Guntur faced current Turkish Silver medalist for a chance at medal position. Guntur missed a medal position by a fraction, finishing in 5th place. Hope Knightly, in her first major Championships and an extremely tough division was voted GB Player of the tournament on day two, due to her massive improvement and calm, solid performance. Hope made a graceful exit in the semi-finals. Simon Negus became the first GB Athlete to claim a medal, sailing through the finals and playoffs, before being drawn against two-time European Champion, and current World Champion of Turkey. Unphased, Simon performed his best to date, taking a well-deserved Bronze medal for Britain. “Day three saw probably the most controversial day of competition”, said Master Derek Sumner, Head of Team. The Senior Male Team put on some very strong performances; to achieve a ranking in the top five after Spanish favourite knocked them out of medal-position. Cadet Females, completed by youngest GB player Tahyha fells, stormed playoffs, only to be knocked out of a Gold/Silver position in a shock defeat to Russia. The team took Great Britain’s second European Bronze of the competition. The Female Junior team showed amazing promise on the floor, finally taking GB’s third consecutive Bronze after a defeat to Spain. Experienced athlete Ali Pourtaheri qualified to finals, to take a frustrating defeat from Germany; leaving him with a very respectable 5th place ranking overall. Current world Bronze Medallist Mike Pejic, also known as Magic Mike to team mates, was the final athlete to take to the European stage. Seeing his way comfortably into the finals, Mike faced Austria for a chance at a final match against Spanish current World Champion. It wasn’t to be, and following a contest of the judges’ decision in what was a breath-takingly close tie-break, the team accepted another Bronze Medal spot for Britain. “With four medals, 5 top-ranking places, and some fantastic performances and new experiences under our belts, we were delighted with our final results” Said Master Derek. “I would like to thank the incredible support from the families’ and clubs of our team members, they were outstanding in their conduct both on and off of the floor. The selfless hard work of staff, coaches clerical individuals is also always clear.” We would like to extend congratulations to our entire Poomsae Team, as once again all represented Great Britain fantastically well.
