Isomerism is a phenomenon by which two or more compounds have same molecular formulabut different properties. If the difference in properties is due to difference in their structuralformulae, it is called structural isomerism. If the difference in properties is due to difference inarrangement of atoms or groups in space, it is called stereoisomerism. The different compounds arecalled isomers.

Structural isomers mainly differ in the length of carbon chain (chain isomers) or the positionof substituents/functional groups on same carbon skeleton (position isomers) or functional groups(functional isomers).
