• Useasimplelayoutthatdoesnotorganizecontentintablesorcolumns.Simplyorganizedmaterialiseasierforlearnerstoreadandunderstand,iseasierforassistivetechnologytointerpretandpresent,andiseasierformobileandhandhelddevicestoresize.

• Useheadingstocommunicatetherelationshipsbetweensections.UseHeading1forthetitle,Heading2formajorsections,Heading3forsubsections,andsoon.Ifheadingsareusedcorrectly,screenreaderuserscanquicklysearchapagebyheadingandparticipantswithcognitivedisabilitiescanunderstandhowsectionsandcontentrelateeasier.

• Ensurethereisastrongcontrastbetweenthetextandbackgroundcolorsusedinyourcoursematerials.

• Userelativefontsizesandmakesurethetextandpagelayoutadjustswhenfontsizesarechanged.Usersshouldnothavetoscrollhorizontally.

Howdoreleaseconditionswork?Releaseconditionsallowyoutocreateacustomlearningpaththroughthematerialsinyourcourse.Whenyouattachareleaseconditiontoanitem,userscannotseethatitemuntiltheymeettheassociatedcondition.Forexample,youcouldattachareleaseconditiontothesecondtopicinyourcourse’scontentareathatwouldhidethattopicuntilusersviewedthetopicbeforeit.Oryoucouldcreateaconditionthatrequireduserstoviewacontenttopicbeforegainingaccesstoaquiz,oronethatrequiredthemtoposttoadiscussiontopicbeforetheycouldseeacontentmodule.

Releaseconditionscanalsobeaddedtointelligentagentstocreateemailnotificationsforusers.Forexample,youcouldcreateanintelligentagentthatsendsareminderemailtouserswhohavenotyetcompletedarequiredquizorassignmentinthecourse.Thisscenarioisidealforusingreleaseconditionswiththe"not"operator.

Ifyouattachmultipleconditionstoanitem,usersmustmeetallconditionsbeforetheycanaccesstheitem.Forexample,youcouldrequireuserstovisitthefirstthreecontenttopicsinaunitbeforegainingaccesstoanassociatedquiz.

Onceausermeetsareleasecondition,theconditionisclearedforthatuserandcannotbereset.Forexample,ifyouattachareleaseconditiontoadiscussiontopicrequiringuserstoachievemorethan60%onaquizbeforetheycanaccessthattopic,andoneofyourparticipantsreceives72%onthequizbutyouadjusttheirgradeto55%theywillbeabletoaccessthetopicbecausetheydidmeettherequirementatsomepoint.

Bestpracticesforcreatingreleaseconditions• Setupconditionsbeforeusersaccessthecourse-Createallofyourcoursematerialsandsetupyourrelease

conditionsbeforethecourseopenstousers.Thisgivesyouachancetocheckformistakesintheconditionsorforcircular,contradictory,orunnecessaryconditions.Ifyouaddnewreleaseconditionsafterusershaveaccessedthecourse,usersmightbeconfusedbyresourcesdisappearing.Sinceconditionscannotbereset,youalsoriskhavingusersmeetconditionsbeforeyourresourcesareready(forexample,accessingacontenttopicbeforeitisfinished).

• Avoidunnecessaryconditions-EachconditionyouassociatewithatooltakesadditionaltimeforBrightspaceLearningEnvironmenttoprocess.Usingasfewconditionsaspossibletosetupalearningpathminimizestheamountoftimethatusersspendwaitingforpagestoload.Forexample,yousetupacontenttopic,aquiz,andanassignmentsubmissionsfolderforthesecondweekofclass.Youwantuserstoreadthetopicbeforetakingthequiz,andyouwantthemtoreadthetopicandattemptthequizbeforesubmittingtheweek’sworktotheassignmentsubmissionsfolder.Fortheassignmentsubmissionsfolder,youonlyneedtoattachtheconditionthatusersattemptthequiz.Sinceusersmustreadthecontenttopicbeforetheycantakethequiz,itisnotnecessarytoaddthisconditiontotheAssignmentsfolderassignmentsubmissionsfolder.

• Avoidcircularreferences-Acircularreferencemakesitimpossibleforuserstosatisfyasetofconditions.Forexample,ifyousettheconditionthatusersmustviewacontenttopicbeforetheycanaccessanassignmentsubmissionsfolder,andthensetaconditionthattheymustsubmitafiletotheassignmentsubmissionsfolderbeforetheycanaccessthecontenttopic,youhaveacircularreference.Userscan’tsatisfyeitherconditionwithoutsatisfyingtheotheronefirst.Circularreferencesaremorelikelytooccurwithlongchainsofconditions.Forexample,acontenttopicthatdependsonaquizthatdependsonanassignmentsubmissionsfolderthatdependsonachecklistthatdependsonthecontenttopic.

• Avoidimpossibleconditions-Ensurethatyourconditionsarenotimpossibleforuserstosatisfy.Forexample,aconditionthatusersmustachievegreaterthan100%onagradeitemwouldbeimpossible(unlessbonusmarksareavailablefortheitem).Ifusersareunabletosatisfyacondition,theyareunabletoaccessthecontentortoolstowhichtheconditionisattached.

• Avoidcontradictoryconditions-Contradictoryconditionsoccurwhentwoormoreconditionsthatcanceleachotheroutareassociatedwithanitem.Forexample,theconditions“Usermustachievegreaterthan49.9%onGradeItem1”and“Usermustachievelessthan50%onGradeItem1”arecontradictory.Userscouldnotsatisfybothconditionsatthesametime;theywouldnotbeabletoseetheitemassociatedwiththeseconditions.

• Releasecontentbasedonlearningabilityandcourseperformance-Includeadditionalcontentinyourcoursespecificallyforuserswhoneedextrahelpandreleasethiscontenttouserswhoscorebelowaspecifiedthresholdonaquizorgradeitem.Alternately,releaseaspecialsurveytouserswhoattainahighscore.

• Releasecontentinstages-Torevealcontenttopicstousersonlyaftertheyhavereadpriorcontent,attachreleaseconditionsonthelatertopicsormodulesthatrequireuserstoviewearliertopics.Thiscanprovideaclearpaththroughthematerialandpreventusersfrombecomingoverwhelmedbyalargetableofcontentsatthestartofthecourse.

• Releasecontentbasedonenrollmentdate-Ifyourcoursehasrollingenrollment,youcansetcoursematerialsandassessmentstobecomeavailablerelativetoausers'enrollmentdate.Thisallowsyoutoprovideastructuredpaththroughthecourseforeveryuserregardlessoftheirenrollmentdate.

• Customizecontentforgroupswithinacourse-Ifyourcoursehasgroupprojectsandyouwanttoprovidedifferentinstructionsorresourcesforeachgroup,youcancreateseparatecontenttopicsormodulesforeachprojectandattachreleaseconditionsbasedongroupenrollment.Groupmembersworkingononeprojectwillseecontentrelatedtotheirworkwithoutbeingdistractedbycontentnotrelevanttothem.

• Useachecklisttoorganizeactivities-Youcancreateachecklistthatliststheactivitiesusersshouldcompletethroughoutthecourse.Forexample,achecklistforthefirstweekmightincludereadingthecourse’sintroductorycontent,postingtoanintroductorydiscussiontopic,andsubmittingalistoflearninggoalstoassignmentsubmissionsfolder.Youcansetreleaseconditionsbasedonuserscheckingoffitemsfromtheirchecklist.Forexample,youmightreleaseaAnnouncementsitemonyourcourse’shomepageonceuserscheckoffthattheyhavecompletedthefirstweek’sactivities.
