Brigadier General Giovanni FUNGO was born in 1960 in Torino, North Western Italy.

In October 1979 he joined the Military Academy and was commissioned in the Italian Army in 1981. At the end of ththe Junior Officers Army School in 1983, in the rank of Lieutenant, he was assigned to the 15 Cavalry Sqdns Group

organizational and communication policy oriented to recruitment, marketing and welfare. During the second half of

2007 he spent a tour of duty in HQ ISAF as Deputy DCOS Support.

From 2007 to 2009 he was again serving in the Italian Army General Staff as Chief Public Information.

Promoted Brigadier General in March 2009, he was appointed Commander of the “Pozzuolo del Friuli” Cavalry

Brigade.ndHe has a university degree and a master degree in Strategic Sciences and a 2 level Master degree in Institutional

Communication.

He has been awarded:

- a Silver Medal for Army Valour;

- a Bronze Cross for Army Merit;

- a Cross for Military Support to Civilian Authorities;

- the Bronze Army Medal for Long Period of Command.

Gen. Stéphane Abrial French Air Force

North Atlantic Treaty Organization

Supreme Allied Commander Transformation

Gen. Stéphane Abrial received appointment by the North Atlantic Council as Supreme Allied Commander Transformation on 29 July 2009. He is the first European to be appointed permanently as head of a NATO strategic command.

Born in 1954 in the South-West of France, he began his military service in 1972. After one semester in the US Air Force Academy, Gen. Abrial graduated from the French Air Force Academy in 1975. He completed his pilot training in 1976.

Gen. Abrial has extensive experience both as a fighter pilot and an operational commander. He has a wide-ranging background that includes operations in coalition environments, at the tactical, operational and strategic levels.

He served as a flight commander in a unit of the German Luftwaffe from 1981 to 1984 and with a unit of the Greek Air Force in 1988. In 1990 and 1991, he took part in the liberation of Kuwait as commander of the French Air Force's 5th Fighter Wing during Operation Desert Storm. From 1996 to 1999, he served at the NATO International Military Staff in Brussels.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Air War College, Montgomery, Alabama, in 1992, and of the French Institute for Advanced Studies in National Defence (IHEDN) in Paris, in 2000.

He acquired broad experience in political-military matters through several appointments to the private offices of the French Prime Minister and President, and went on to serve as head of the French air defence and air operations command, and finally as Air Force Chief of Staff from 2006 to 2009.

He has, among other distinctions, been elevated to the distinction of Grand Officer in the French Legion of Honour, and was made Commander of US Legion of Merit, and was awarded the German Verdienstkreuz der Bunderwehr (silver).

Gerald Howarth MP Minister for International Security Strategy Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, UK MOD

Background and Education Gerald Howarth was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for

the Ministry of Defence with the title of Minister for International Security

Strategy.

Mr Howarth was born in September 1947. He was educated at Haileybury and ISC Junior School,

Windsor, and Bloxham School, Banbury (scholar). He read English at the University of Southampton

(BA Hons), where he served with the University Air Squadron, and was commissioned into the Royal

Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1968.

From 1971-1983 he worked in international banking with his last appointment as manager of

syndicated lending at Standard Chartered Bank. From 1983-1992 he served as Conservative Member

of Parliament for Cannock & Burntwood during which time he was PPS to Michael Spicer at the

Department of Energy and from 1991-92 PPS to Mrs Margaret Thatcher.

In 1997 he was elected MP for Aldershot and served on the Home Affairs Select Committee and the

Defence Select Committee. From 2002-2010 he served as a Shadow Defence Minister with

responsibility for defence procurement and the Royal Air Force.

Mr Howarth has been married to Elizabeth since 1973 and they have three children and two

grandchildren. He has held a pilot's licence since 1965 and is a church warden at the Royal Garrison

Church in Aldershot. He is president of the Air Display Association, a Trustee of the British Forces

Foundation and of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, and he and his wife are joint patrons of Aerobility,

the British Disabled Flying Association. Apart from flying, his interests include photography and DIY.

Paul Bell

Kingdom where he managed the Europe, Middle East and Africa business. After seven years in

Europe, he returned to the United States to manage the commercial business in North and South

America for Dell.

Born in North Africa, Paul worked with the Peace Corps in Tunisia early in his career. His current

leadership role at Dell is complemented by his broad international experience and long-standing

personal passion for public service.

Paul is currently the chairman of the Global Giving Council at Dell, an organization that seeks out and

supports philanthropic programs including Dell Youth Connect, which helps connect children to the

digital world.

He is an instrument-rated pilot, and enjoys traveling with his wife, Maryann, and three children.

Paul earned bachelor's degrees in fine arts and business administration from Pennsylvania State

University and a master's degree in business administration from the Yale School of Organization

and Management.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen NATO Secretary General Background and Education Anders Fogh Rasmussen took office as the North Atlantic Treaty

Organization’s 12th Secretary General on 1 August 2009.

He was born in Ginnerup, Jutland, on 26 January 1953. After passing the

baccalaureate at Viborg Katedralskole in 1972, he studied economics at the University of Aarhus,

graduating (MSc Econ) in 1978. The same year he became member of the Danish Parliament

representing the Liberal Party.

Mr Rasmussen held numerous positions in government and opposition throughout his political

career. From 1987 to 1992 he was Minister for Taxation and from 1990 to 1992 also Minister for

Economic Affairs in the Conservative-Liberal coalition Government. As Minister for Economic Affairs

and member of the EU’s ECOFIN-council 1990-92, Mr Rasmussen was the Danish negotiator of and

signatory to the Maastricht Treaty which eventually led to the introduction of the single currency,

the euro.

From 1992 to 1998 he was spokesman for the Liberal Party and from 1993 to 1998 in addition vice-

chairman of the Parliament’s Economic and Political Affairs Committee. In 1998 he became chairman

of the Liberal Party’s national organisation and vice-chairman of the Parliament’s Foreign Policy

Board.

After the parliamentary elections in 2001 he formed his first government, a coalition consisting of

the Liberal Party and the Conservative People’s Party. His government was re-elected in 2005 and

2007 respectively, and he held the position as Prime Minister until he was elected as future NATO

Secretary General at the Strasbourg-Kehl Summit in April 2009.

During the Danish Presidency of the European Union from July to December 2002 Mr Rasmussen

played a key role in the process leading to conclusion of the accession negotiations with 10

candidates for EU-membership at the meeting of the European Council in Copenhagen in December

2002.

Mr Rasmussen is married to Anne-Mette Rasmussen. They have three children. In his spare time, he

is a passionate runner, and he also enjoys cycling and kayaking.

Lieutenant General Patrick Auroy Assistant Secretary General Defence Investment – France Background and Education Lieutenant General Patrick Auroy was born in Orléans, France. In October 2009

he took up the post of Deputy Director General of the DGA, the armaments

branch of the French MoD, which he served in the course of his successive

professional duties.

He graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique, the ENSAE (French Aeronautics and Space Academy), and the

EPNER (French Flight Test Crew Academy), and began his career as a helicopter flight test engineer responsible

for certification at the DGA Flight Test Centre (CEV) in Brétigny – the flight technical authority in charge of

military qualification and civil certification of aircraft, helicopters and all airborne systems. Following his

appointment as Head of the Helicopter Test Branch, he completed the restructuring and merging of helicopter

activities in Istres.

In 1988 he moved to Paris and took over the technical management of the Franco-German Tiger Helicopter

Programme at the DGA Directorate for Aeronautics. Returning to Istres, he was promoted to Flight Test Centre

Technical Manager. In 1992 he was appointed as Technical Adviser (Aeronautics and International Affairs) to

the Head of the DGA. In addition, he acted as MoD official representative within the Commission in charge of

the White Paper on Defence and within the Mission for State Reform (economic sector) initiated by the Prime

Minister. He was Head of the CEV in Istres from 1994 to 1998.

In September 1999, he became Air Warfare Force System Architect at DGA headquarters in Paris, dealing with

strategic studies in that field, and in particular in Air and Missile Defence. From 1999 to 2003 he was the

French representative in the NATO Conference of National Armaments Directors Missile Defence Project

Group.

In 2002 he was appointed as Deputy Director of the Force System Architecture Department. He was promoted

to the post of DGA Director for Force Systems and Trend Analysis and became a member of the DGA Executive

Committee. In 2005, he was appointed as Director for Force Systems and Strategies, responsible for: preparing

future capabilities - a part of the capability process led by the Joint Staff, defence policy on science, research

and technology, international armaments cooperation, in particular through NATO and the EU, economic and

industrial armaments issues.

Throughout this period, he supervised for the DGA the preparation and implementation works related to the

French return to the NATO integrated command structure and those related to the French Presidency of the

European Union. He was deeply involved in the reform the DGA, and was promoted to the post of Deputy

Director General on 9 October 2009. As in his previous posts, he assists or deputizes for the “Délégué Général

pour l’Armement” as National Armaments Director and frequently participates in the NATO Conference of

National Armaments Directors and in the European Defence Agency Steering Board.

Patrick Auroy is member of the board of National Office for Aeronautics and Space Research, the National

Space Agency and the Institute of Higher Studies for National Defence. He studied at the Centre for Higher

Armament Studies, the Centre for Higher Military Studies and the Institute of Higher Studies for National

Defence. He is commander of the National Order of Merit, Officer of the Legion of Honour and holder of the

Aeronautical Medal.

Ms. Claude-France Arnould, EDA Chief Executive

Claude-France Arnould is the Chief Executive of the European Defence since 17 January, 2011.

Previously, Ms. Arnould worked on defence matters in other EU positions. She led the Crisis Management and

Planning Directorate (CMPD) at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, between 2009 and

2010, and as Director for Defence Issues at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union from

2001 to 2009 (in charge of operations, military capabilities, partnerships and chair of the EU Satellite Centre

Board).

Earlier in her career (1998-2001), Ms. Arnould worked as Director of International and Strategic Affairs at the

French National Defence General Secretariat /Prime Minister (preparation of national "Council of Defence",

CIEMG / interagency process for weapons exports control, armaments and space issues).

Claude-France Arnould started her career at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Desk Officer at the North

America Directorate (1981-1983). Afterwards, she became Desk Officer at the Economic and Financial Affairs

Directorate, at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1983-1986), responsible for EC trade policy and external

relations. After serving at the Private Office of the Minister for European Affairs (dealing with Community issues),

in 1987, she became Secretary-General of the French National School for Public Administration (ENA), until

1989. In 1989, she was appointed Deputy Director of European Community Affairs, at the French Ministry of

Foreign Affairs (in charge of external relations, trade, budget, institutions, CAP and development). She was then

posted in Germany, as First Counsellor of the French Embassy (1994-1998).

Ms. Arnould has been "Ministre plénipotentiaire" (French Ministry of Foreign Affairs) since June 2001. She is a

former student of the Ecole normale supérieure, and holds an agrégation in Classics and a degree in art and

archaeology. Ms. Arnould is a former student of the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA). Claude-France

Arnould has been awarded the distinctions of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, Officier de l'Ordre National du

Mérite and Bundesverdienstkreuz Erster Klasse.

Vice Admiral Carol M. Pottenger is the Deputy Chief of Staff, Capability Development at NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, Norfolk, VA.

Pottenger graduated from Purdue University in May 1977, and was commissioned as an ensign through NROTC. One of the first

women selected for sea duty, Pottenger reported aboard USS Yosemite (AD 19) as engineering division officer. Subsequent sea tours included assignment as operations officer aboard USS Yellowstone (AD 41) and executive officer aboard USS Kiska (AE 35). Pottenger assumed command of USS Shasta (AE 33) in 1996, completing several deployments in support of Commander 5th Fleet and Commander 7th Fleet. She took command of USS Bridge (AOE 10) in 2001, and during an extended deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, re-supplied 10 battle groups, amphibious groups and dozens of coalition ships; receiving the Battle E and the 2002 Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy.

Shore tours have included assignment to Commander, Service Group 2 as staff communications officer; assignment to USNA as the 25th company officer; commanding officer of two Navy Operational Support Centers in Mare Island Calif, and San Diego Calif. She also served as COMNAVSURFRESFOR Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, institutionalizing manpower and personnel best practices across a force of 65,000 Reservists.

During several tours in the Pentagon, Pottenger served as executive assistant for two, three and four star flag officers, including as executive assistant for the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Upon selection to flag rank she served as Deputy Chief of Navy Reserve for one year. In November 2005 Pottenger established a new Navy command, creating a type commander for over 40 combat logistics and special mission ships. She served for one year as the first Commander Military Sealift Fleet Support Command. In November 2006, Pottenger became the first female admiral to command a strike group when she assumed command of Amphibious Force 7th Fleet/Expeditionary Strike Group 7 at White Beach, Okinawa. In September 2008, Pottenger became the third Commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command as a force provider of 40,000 Sailors, Active and Reserve, providing unique expeditionary combat and combat support capability to combatant commanders in every theater of operations. In May 2007, Pottenger received a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Sciences Honoris Causa from Purdue University. Her personal awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (6 awards), Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards).

Osha also serves as the Executive Director of Economic Development for Old Dominion University where he advises the President and senior leadership on matters of economic development policy and business strategy. He is considered a thought leader in helping Universities across North America leverage their research and technologies into economic development “ecosystems.” He was also recently appointed as the founding director of the ODU Innovation Foundation. Osha is considered an expert on Canadian – US business relations, working closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade – Canada in helping Canadian companies successfully expand their operations into the United States and assisting US companies in developing Canadian partnerships and markets. He is a regular speaker at trade missions and business and economic development conferences across Canada and the United States. Previously, as Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff at Broadwing Inc., an NYSE-listed, leading national telecommunications provider, Osha was integral in building the company from $600 million to over $3.5 billion per year in revenue and helped lead the company’s M&A activities, strategic development, and award-winning marketing and corporate communications capabilities, among other far-reaching responsibilities. Prior to that, he served as Special Assistant to United States Senator Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), providing advice and support on a variety of foreign policy and legislative communications and policy issues. While in Washington, Osha also provided policy advice to the Reagan Administration and developed a research methodology that has become a standard at Congressional Quarterly magazine. Professor Dr. phil. Holger H. Mey

Holger H. Mey, born in 1958 in Flensburg, Germany, is Head of Advanced Concepts, CASSIDIAN, Unter-schleissheim near Munich, Germany.

Before joining then EADS Defence & Security now CASSIDIAN in June 2004, Prof. Mey worked for 12 years as a self-employed security policy analyst and consultant in Bonn, Germany. Among many other functions, Prof. Mey served as President & CEO of the Institute for Strategic Analyses (ISA) in Bonn, Germany. Over many years, he was a frequent TV and radio commentator, publisher, and lecturer. Dr. Mey is an Honorary Professor at the University of Co-logne, Germany.

Prof. Mey began his professional career 1986 as a Research Associate at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (Foundation for Science and Politics) then at Ebenhausen, Germany. From 1990 to 1992, he served as a Security Policy Analyst on the Policy Planning Staff of the German Minister of Defense. From 1992 to 1994, already self-employed, he be-came the Security Policy Advisor to the Chairman of the Defense Committee in the German Parliament. In 1992, he founded the ISA and became Chairman and Director. Prof. Mey directed and conducted over 30 studies for various Ministries and Government Agencies.

He is a member of many international and national foreign and security policy associations, including the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS, London) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärti-ge Politik (the German Council on Foreign Relations, DGAP), Berlin.

Prof. Mey published well over 100 articles in major security policy journals, newspapers, and books. Wayne Fujito

Chairman, NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG) Background and Education Wayne Fujito, President, International Division, DECISIVE ANALYTICS

Corporation (DAC) was installed as Chairman, NATO Industrial Advisory

Group (NIAG) after having been unanimously elected by the NIAG Heads

of Delegation at the February 2010 NIAG Plenary at NATO Headquarters in

Brussels. He succeeds Robert Bell, formerly of SAIC.

Mr Fujito was selected by the National Defence Industrial Association (NDIA) in 2005 to be its

representative to the US NIAG delegation. In 2007, he became the Chairman/ Head of the US NIAG

Delegation. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the NDIA International Division and is a Life

Member of NDIA. Mr Fujito served for 28 years with the US Army, specializing in air defence and

ballistic missile defence R&D, with his final assignment as the Chief of Staff of what is today, the US

Army Space and Missile Defence Command. He was an Army member to the NATO Nuclear Planning

Group and has assisted the Office of the Secretary of Defence with the Defence Cooperation

Initiative for NATO and a number of other NATO related efforts. He is recognized as a specialist of

US-Japan security relations, especially as relates to missile defence cooperation.

Mr Fujito joined DAC in January 2002 and oversees both its International Division and Huntsville

advisor to the Brussels office of the World Security Institute. Previously, he

served as Policy Director and head of the Security and Defence Policy

Division at the Slovak Ministry of Defence. He oversaw the ministry's

defence analysis, planning & evaluation activities as well as its legislative efforts, military missions

and international security initiatives. He was responsible for relations with NATO and the EU and

advised Ukraine and Bosnia, among others, on NATO and EU integration.

Before joining the ministry of defence Tomas Valasek founded and directed the Brussels office of the

World Security Institute (formerly the Centre for Defence Information, CDI), a Washington, DC-based

independent defence and security think-tank (2002-2006). From 1996 to 2002 he worked as Senior

European Analyst in CDI's Washington, DC office.

Mr Valasek is the editor and co-author of "The 'Easternization' of Europe's Security Policy" (IVO-CDI,

October 2004), and numerous articles appearing in newspapers and journals including Wall Street

Journal, Jane's Defence Weekly, and the Cambridge Review of International Affairs.

He is a holder of an MA in International Affairs from the George Washington University in

Alberto de Benedictis

Chief Executive Finmeccanica, UK Background and Education An Italian national and graduate of the School of Economics of La Sapienza University of Rome and the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Alberto de Benedictis started his career as an economist at the World Bank in Washington. In 1981, he joined Finmeccanica’s New York office and was appointed North American Representative in 1983 and Senior Vice President North America in 1989. During that period, Finmeccanica developed an extensive presence in the United States, through acquisitions. Alberto has held Board positions in NASDAQ and NYSE listed companies, and has served on Audit, Remuneration and Strategy Committees of these Boards. In 1995, Alberto was appointed Senior Vice President Strategic Finance at Finmeccanica corporate in Rome, Italy with responsibility for mergers, joint ventures, divestitures and corporate finance. Born in 1944, Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola joined the Italian Navy in 1963 and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966. Soon after the graduation in 1967 he attended the Submarine School and underwent fleet training onboard submarines.

He served in junior officer appointments in conventional submarines and commanded the submarines "Cappellini" (1974-75) and "Sauro" (1980-81).

In 1981 he attended the NATO Defense College in Rome. From 1981 to 1984 Giampaolo Di Paola served as Anti Submarine Warfare and Undersea Warfare Program Officer, Long Term Planning Branch, in the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia (USA).

In 1984 he assumed command of the frigate "Grecale". Thereafter, in 1986, he was appointed to the Navy Staff in Rome as Plans and Programs Branch Chief in the Directorate of Financial Planning.

From 1989 to 1990, as a Captain, he commanded the aircraft carrier "Garibaldi".

In 1990 he returned to the Navy Staff and was appointed as Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff (1990-91), then as Chief of Naval Plans and Policy Branch (1991-92), and finally as Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations (1993-94). During this period the Italian Navy was involved in supporting NATO arms embargo operations (Operation Sharp Guard) to contain the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, and in the U.N. operation Restore Hope in Somalia.

With the rank of Rear Admiral (lower half) in 1994 he was assigned to the Defence Staff in the Ministry of Defence where he became Chief of the Directorate of Defence Policy (1994-98). In this position he took active part as far as the planning of the Italian contribution to the NATO effort for the stabilization of the Balkans and for the Italian-led Operation in support of Albania in 1997. As Polmil Advisor to the Minister of Defence and to the Italian Chod he was actively engaged in NATO PfP initiative and in the Mediterranean Dialogue. He was also the Italian Representative to the HLG on nuclear and proliferation issues.

From 1998 to 2001, with the rank of Rear Admiral, he assumed the position of Chief of the Cabinet Office of the st

Ministry of Defence. On the 1 of January 1999 he was promoted Vice Admiral. In this position he took active part in supporting the political decision making for the Italian contribution to the NATO initiative in Kosovo, the NATO enlargement process and outreach policy and in the development of the ESDP and NATO-EU relationship.

In March 2001 he was appointed Secretary General of Defence / National Armaments Director. In this capacity he held national responsibility for major NATO programmes such as AGS, ALTBMD, NATO Airlift Capability, NATO SATCOM Post 2000 and MEADS.

He was promoted Admiral on 10 March 2004 on becoming Chief of Defence. In this capacity he had the overall responsibility for the policy and planning of the Italian Armed Forces and - as CINCFOR – he did hold planning and command responsibility for Italian Forces participation in NATO, EU and Coalition operations conducted in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, Pakistan and in the United Nations Operation in Lebanon.

As of 27 June 2008, he is the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

Admiral Di Paola holds a degree in Strategic and Military Sciences and an “ad honorem” Masters degree in Sciences. Dr. Eric Pouliquen Branch Head, Future Solutions Modeling and Simulation, ACOS Capability Engineering, Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation Background and Education Dr. Eric Pouliquen, Branch Head, Future Solutions Modeling and Simulation, has been leading this group since July 2009. In February 2010, he stood up the Office for Collaboration with Academia and Industry (OCAI) and has also been leading OCAI, the staff responsible for implementing the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) Framework For Collaborative Interaction (FFCI). Dr. Pouliquen has been with ACT since September 2005, when he joined as a Research and Technology (R&T) Analyst. In 2008, he led the preparation and execution of ACT Industry Day, where he contributed to the design and subsequent implementation of FFCI. Among his various assignments at ACT, he contributed to NATO early efforts in Countering-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) as deputy leader of the C-IED IPT. He has been with NATO since 1995, serving successively as a scientist, senior scientist and principal scientist at the NATO Undersea Research Center in La Spezia, Italy where he conducted research in the field of mine countermeasures and harbour protection. Dr. Pouliquen served his country of France as a voluntary “coopérant” holding the position of Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. CDR Danny Henkens Future Solutions, Research and Technology, ACOS Capability Engineering, Headquarters, Supreme Allied Command Transformation Background and Education Danny Henkens entered the Royal Military Academy as Air Force cadet in 1987. After his graduation in 1991, he served for ten years in different units and HQ’s of the Belgian Air Force as Air Operations officer and Intelligence officer. In the same time frame he made deployments to Central Africa (Rwanda) in 1993 and the Balkans in 1997. Just after 9/11 in 2001, he was appointed as the Belgian Liaison officer to US CENTCOM, FL, USA in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he received special Commendations of the Commander in Chief, General T. Franks, as well as the Belgian Minister of Defence for coordinating and planning of humanitarian air transport missions. After this mission in 2003, he was appointed to Allied Component Command HQ RAMSTEIN in GERMANY, NATO’s only Expeditionary Air HQ, as Chief Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), where he was recognized for his assistance in the development of new NATO ISR capabilities in coordination with higher NATO HQ’s and national governments. During his seven years in RAMSTEIN, he was deployed three times to AFGHANISTAN in different positions: Intelligence Assessments, Deputy Chief Joint intelligence Cell and Chief Intelligence Plans. During one of these deployments, he was selected by COM ISAF as personal advisor, briefed UNAMA SRSG Jean Arnault and Afghan Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali for which he received special commendations. Lt Col (P) (MD) Valérie DENUX Medical Branch, Supreme Allied Command Transformation Background and Education Lt. Col. Valérie Denux was graduated, and earned her Medical Doctorate from the University of Bordeaux in 1995. In addition, she holds different academic diplomas and post graduate courses: catastrophic medicine and tropical diseases (1995), Master of Management (2000), International Relations Certificate (2007), Logistic Degree (2nd level) (2008), Master of Strategy (2009). During this period she was the chairman’s secretary of the Project Team Medical (PTMed) in the European Defence Agency (EDA). In ACT Medical Branch, she is responsible to coordinate Multinationality, Comprehensive Approach (in relation with international organisations and other partners), Civil-Military interaction, Lessons Learned and Research & Technology. General Bieniek was born in Krapkowice, Poland, on 19 June 1951. He joined the Polish Army as an Officer Cadet in 1969. Following commissioning, he served in 7th Reconnaissance Battalion of 10th Armoured Division,

starting as platoon leader, through long range reconnaissance company commander, and staff officer of the battalion. From 1978 to 1981 he attended the Polish Armed Forces General Staff Academy. Upon graduation he served as chief of G-3 Plans of 6th Airborne Division. In 1983 he was assigned as COS of battalion of 6th Airborne Division, and in 1985 he assumed a command of the battalion where served until 1989. Promoted to Lt Col in 1989, he was appointed as COS and then CO of the Polish Contingent in the UN Mission - UNDOF until 1991. Then following a tour of duty as Section Chief in OPS Division of Cracow Military District, he served as Chief Logistics Officer in another UN Mission - MINURSO until 1993. In 1994, upon his promotion to Colonel, he assumed the command of 6th Air Assault Brigade in Cracow. The following year he attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London graduating in 1996, followed by command of 25th Air Cavalry Division. The same year he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. In 1997 he attended the Senior Defence Management Course in Monterey. In 1999 General Bieniek took over Nordic-Polish Brigade Command in SFOR, and successfully commanded the Brigade for over 7 months. In 1999 he became the Chief of Crisis Management Division in Polish MOD. At the end of the year he was assigned as Chief of Exercise, Education and Training Branch in SHAPE. In May 2002 he became Deputy Commander of 3rd Corps NRDC-Turkey. From January to July 2004 he successfully commanded Multinational Division Central-South in Iraq during the operation "Iraqi Freedom". Then, he was appointed as 2nd Mechanized Corps Commander. On 15th August 2004 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. Between January and August 2007 he was assigned as a Special Envoy of the SACEUR in Afghanistan, where he served as an advisor to Minister of Defense. From October 2007, he served as a senior military advisor to the Polish Minister of Defense. In April 2009 Lt General Bieniek was appointed as the Polish Military Representative to the NATO and European Union Military Committees. 29th September 2010 he has been nominated and assumed the position of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. On 10 November 2010 he was promoted to the rank of General.

General Bieniek's education includes the Polish Army Academy and Polish Armed Forces General Staff Academy as well as Royal College of Defence Studies in London. He also holds a Master of Arts Degree from Cracow Physical Education Academy and a PhD in International Security from Polish NDU. In addition to English he is also fluent in Russian.

General Bieniek has been awarded the Officer's Cross and Commander's Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland, Golden Cross of Merit, US Bronze Medal of Merit, medals for operations and many others.

His interests include history, literature and sports, especially tennis, snowboarding, windsurfing and parachuting. He holds the Jump Master qualification for both military and civilian parachuting, with more than 3000 jumps under his belt. Moreover he is qualified to jump together with US, UK and Belgian Airborne Units.

General Bieniek is married to Gra¿yna. They have four grown children – Mieczys³aw, Piotr, Pawe³ and Magdalena.
