Bridgehampton Chamber Music FestivalMarya Martin, Artistic Director
35th Season July 19–August 19, 2018
Dear Friends,35 years ago I stood on my front porch and sold tickets to our very first festival. It’s hard to believe how much we’ve accomplished since that first weekend of two concerts. But even before that, I, like so many musicians and composers over the years, came to America to follow my musical dreams. This summer, we celebrate the amazing impact that America has had on composers and musicians and vice versa through our theme, “Destination America.” As we put this very special season together, we were reminded of the profound and enduring relationship between exposure to other cultures and creativity. Throughout the festival we feature amazing works by composers who came to this country for reasons both creative and otherwise: to flee oppression (Stravinsky, Korngold, Schoenberg, Dohnányi, Martinu), to explore new opportunities (Dvorák, Golijov, Piazzolla, Zhou Tian), or as the children of immigrants (Copland, Bernstein, Bunch). All have had an impact on our culture, and have made our lives all the richer for it. Our musicians, including myself, also hail from many parts of the world—Armenia, Canada, China, France, Great Britain, Israel, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and New Zealand. We also present two new commissions: a quintet for piano and winds from the multi-faceted Kenji Bunch (whose mother was born in Japan), and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec’s “A New Country,” which will be featured on our final concert.
We cannot wait to celebrate our 35th anniversary season with you, and I look forward to seeing you at the concerts.
With warm regards,
Marya Martin Founder and Artistic Director

The American experiment—exemplified by self-determination, democracy for all, the freedom to express oneself without censorship—has been a source of inspiration to generations. Artists have been drawn to America and some of its highest ideals for centuries. The 2018 Festival explores the immense creativity inspired by the great exchange of ideas that is America, by presenting works that exhibit the wonder, joy, contradictions, and promise of a great nation and its people. Most of this season’s programs include works related to this theme, and all will feature artists who hail from other nations, bringing a diversity of thought and interpretation that continues to refresh and enliven the repertoire with new perspectives. Look for the “Destination America” symbol throughout the programs which indicates works/composers whose lives were changed by their experiences in America.

Felix Mendelssohn wasn’t the only wunderkind in the family—his sister Fanny was an incredible pianist and composer in her own right, though because of the times and culture, she couldn’t pursue her artistic impulses. Or could she? Alan Alda and BCMF artists tell the tale of these amazing siblings through their words and music in this season’s Composer Portrait.

Erich Korngold was hailed as the musical descendant of Brahms. WWII intervened in his trajectory, so he brought Germanic Romanticism to California, shaping film soundtracks for generations to come. Similarly, Haydn exported his Germanic Classicism to London, wowing audiences with his effortless invention. Both exemplify the huge cultural impact artists make when they cross borders.

What characteristics define the sound of a culture? Does the music of Fauré sound inherently French, or that of Dvorák reflect Bohemia? And in the case of Zhou Tian, a Chinese-American composer, what happens when cultures combine? This colorful program explores these questions and more. What better way to celebrate a birthday than with friends? We bring together the music of Leonard Bernstein on his centenary, along with that of his great friend and mentor, Aaron Copland. Both were children of immigrants, and both went on to profoundly influence and shape American culture. The superb baritone Nathan Gunn joins BCMF musicians to honor this milestone.

Beethoven’s “Ghosts” Wednesday, August 15, 6:30pm Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church
Beethoven’s influence looms large, and his legacy can be heard throughout this program. Stravinsky’s only work for string quartet resonates with the great master’s adventurous spirit, while the Franck Quintet’s muscular romanticism reflects Beethoven at his most heroic. Both elements weave throughout Beethoven’s stirring “Ghost” Trio.
