HELLO! FROM THE TEAM

Issue 5 is here! I am so excited for you to read through these pages and see what my team and our contributors came up with!

So excited to have new faces and old friends, like photographer Risee Chaderton and hair stylist Donna Smith, as part of this production. It really means the world to me. Having Blue Sky Luxury play a huge part of this publication is a real honor and the villa they featured and allowed us to use, Fustic House, is pure elegance for your special day. Fustic House can be transformed into something magical and having local event designer, Robert Carter show you how to achieve this, was truly spectacular. Our fashion content has grown, and I welcome local designer, Jazz Applewhite and international wedding gown expert, Mark Ingram Atelier in New York City, to share their favorite designs with you. They are breathtaking!

So please, enjoy and have fun reading Issue 5! The BrideLIFE team and I sure had a blast putting it together for you to be inspired for your special day.

This issue has been so much fun to work on! The location shoot at one of my favourite villas on the island, Fustic House, was a dream come true. Everyone was just wonderful to work with, especially the butler at Fustic, Fabian Harris, who made everything so easy for us! It was a long, but exciting day and to see the images in the magazine is so satisfying.

Loved being able to feature the work of local bridal designer Jazz Applewhite, whose intricate creations include dresses and hair accessories that are handmade and so unique!! Robert Carter was so much fun to work with and just blew us away with his designs - transforming an already stunning villa into something ethereal and otherworldly. Amazing! Risee Chaderton is -quite simply - the bomb. Can’t say enough about her talent and editorial photography!

All in all, it’s always a journey to get to the end of each issue and one that is constantly pushing us to take it a step above. To everyone who contributed to making this issue so incredible, thank you from the entire brideLIFE team. To our readers - enjoy!

The best part about creating this issue for me was getting to enjoy what happens when a collaboration takes place between Barbados’ top wedding designer (Robert Carter), renowned photographer (Risée Chaderton) and a team of the best beauty stylists in the Caribbean. Pure wedding splendor!

I’ve also learnt a few things over the last few months: Fustic House is a dream villa to be fully explored; Jazz Applewhite is an undiscovered gem of a gown designer, whose work NEEDS to be seen; and the Barbadian wedding industry continues to evolve and blossom at a glorious rate!

Church WeddingThe couple needs a written confirmation from their priest that they are both practicing Christians and have participated in pre-marital counselling.

Roman Catholic ChurchParties must be interviewed by their Parish Priest in the home Diocese of the Catholic party. It is he who will undertake the necessary investigations, obtain a dispensation if required and provide information about participation in a pre-marriage preparation programme. Your Parish Priest will then forward the relevant papers to his Diocesan Chancery. The chancery should then send them well in advance, to the Diocesan office in Barbados. The Sacrament of Marriage may not be performed on Holy Saturday.

Nidhe Israel Jewish Synagogue There is no Rabbi in Barbados and non-Jews are not allowed to use the Synagogue. Those who would like to get married in the Synagogue must bring their own Rabbi. There is a rental fee of US$1,500.

Applying for your marriage license

Application for a marriage license must be made by both parties in person, at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Bridgetown.

Valid Passports or the original or certified copies of the applicants’ birth certificates are needed. If either party was married previously and widowed, a certified copy of the marriage certificate and death certificate in respect of the deceased spouse. If either party was divorced, an original decree absolute or a certified copy of Final Judgment not decree Nisi. If either party was previously married and widowed, a Certified copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse. Where necessary, all documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. A marriage may be solemnized immediately after the issue of the licence.

$25 BDS stamp fee for overseas couples and $10 BDS for Barbadian Citizens.

$200 BDS for Marriage License for overseas couple or $45 BDS for Barbadian Citizens.

One of things I love most about getting married in Barbados is the versatility the island offers to cater to any style of wedding. Destination weddings are often thought to be small affairs, seaside, with palm trees swaying and the sweet sound of steel pan drums carried by the salty Caribbean air. And while this holds true here in Barbados, we also have a wealth of other options for couples looking to host a unique weekend for their closest family and friends. Here are some of my favorite “types” of weddings that Barbados can inspire—a list that is by no means, complete!

Modern We have a lot of unique modern spaces here, like Cin Cin Restaurant or one of our modern villas. These spaces evoke that clean, modern and minimalist feeling. Nothing beats elegant simplicity paired with ocean views and exceptional service.

Historic Barbados has dozens of historic plantation homes across the island on expansive properties with blooming gardens, tall palm trees (and when I say tall, I mean REALLY tall!), shuttered windows and big wrap around porches. The legacy of Barbados as a British colony has left some of the most gorgeous fusions of architecture and history!

Beach It goes without saying that Barbados has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world; a color of turquoise so exquisite, you’ll take 50 pictures with your iPhone (which never seems to do it justice). All our beaches are public here, but that doesn’t mean that there is the same amount of people on them as grains of sand. We have dozens of secluded beaches, nestled in unique areas, with sweeping views of the ocean and rocky cliffs. They’re perfect for anything from a barefoot wedding to an elegant dinner for 20 under the stars.

Rustic Just about anywhere you go inland has fields of sugar cane as far as the eye can see. There are a lot of unique venues in and around these areas that can inspire a more rustic, “farm-to-table” setting. While the weather here during some months can be unpredictable, we’re lucky to have a wide range of tents to keep your guests comfortable from the elements.

Former hotelier, well-known raconteur, author and floral designer, John Chandler and his wife Rain (formerly of Fisherpond House) recently moved to Lancaster Great House in St James, transforming this historic Barbadian plantation residence into the new home for their renowned Sunday Planters Buffet Lunch and as a location for private functions and parties. Opening the doors in late December last year, Lancaster sits on over two acres of land, with mature mahogany and fruit trees and beautiful gardens; full of colonial charm and an extensive collection of whimsical and eclectic antiques, objets d’art and paintings amassed by the Chandlers over many years.

This lovely home will take you back in time to an era of elegance and sophistication, and is a fabulous location for small and intimate weddings. Tables are set in amongst the lush gardens, while the main house and a large covered patio with a bar and grand piano provide plenty of space for guests to mingle; the property itself is the perfect backdrop to create memorable wedding photos!

The always entertaining John is known for regaling guests throughout with his stories and facts about Barbados – many of them gleaned from his years as a hotelier, which have been documented in his recently published book, “Hotel Barbados - My Life of Discretion at the Ocean View”. John also offers private tours of the house and property. Truly a unique experience from a bygone era!

The most recent addition to the nightlife scene in Barbados, Red Door Lounge is taking it up a notch, creating a cosmopolitan environment with a world-class bar and some of the best cocktails in the region! MEET A COUPLEAlison & Ian Rogers

&How did you two meet each other?

ALISON: It’s a bit of a crazy story! We met 22 years ago when we were 9 years old. My mum had decided to change mine and my sisters’ primary school. I remember turning up at the school gates, I was so nervous, all these new faces just staring at me, but I must say I looked over and thought what’s the milky bar kid doing here? And I wonder if he has free chocolate, not knowing that I was looking at my future husband……it’s unreal.

IAN: Yes, it’s crazy I did look like the milky bar kid! ha ha! I remember the first time I saw Ali we were told by our teacher to make her feel welcome and include her - to be honest once I saw her, I was more than happy to. I have to say for me there was an instant attraction.

ALISON: I’ve not heard that before…..aww, very sweet! So I joined that class, and Ian and I became classmates until we both left school and went our separate ways.

Tell us about the engagement.

IAN: I’d been thinking about it for weeks, but just couldn’t find the right time or place - so I decided to conspire with Ali’s mum and dad. Knowing Ali like I do, I knew she’d be happy as long as it was simple and honest. So the day I decided to ask her, I told my parents what I was about to do and left the house all suited and booted, with the ring, champagne and flowers ready. As I get to Ali’s parents and ring the doorbell, it seemed like forever before she

came out looking at me all confused. So I then grab my moment, get down on one knee right there and say “what are you doing for the rest of your life? Because I want to spend mine with you. Will you marry me?”

ALISON: I was so shocked.

IAN: So I’m waiting, thinking please say yes, please say yes - then finally she says yes amongst the crying and laughter. It was lovely.

ALISON: It was perfect. My mum came rushing out, we were both laughing and crying all at the same time in the street. My dad was smiling from ear to ear and hugging Ian. With all the commotion we were making all the neighbours start appearing, clapping and cheering! It was a real celebration. We ended up going from house to house down our street. I mean most of the neighbours have known me my whole life. We were soooooo tipsy by the end of the day we crashed and opened the bottle of champagne Ian brought with him the next day. It was lovely.

What made you decide to have a destination wedding?

ALISON: We wanted pure luxury, glamour, elegance and an experience for all our loved ones, with it feeling effortless and to surprise them along the way. Quite difficult to achieve, but we both knew Barbados was the place for us. There was no question.

Why did you choose Barbados as your destination?

IAN: Ali’s grandparents are both from Barbados - her grandfather was a famous boxer here [the UK] in the 50’s called Kid Ralph, so she had that connection. Plus her mum and dad got married here on the island many years ago. So I know it’s special to her.

ALISON: Yes very special! I took Ian to Barbados for the first time on his 30th birthday, and actually to The Cliff Restaurant (where their wedding was held) - from then I knew he had also fallen in love with the island. So for us Barbados was the dream destination and wedding.

Did you hire a wedding planner, and how did you find your wedding vendors?

ALISON: We hired Weddings by Malissa to make our dream wedding come alive. Fortunately, Malissa and her

team were formidable - I cannot sing her praises enough. She knew the best people in the business, from the florist (Simply Flowers), photographer (Steve Cumberbatch) to the videographer (Damion Hallet) and everything else in between, any ideas we had Malissa could source the details and make it happen. It was truly an incredible experience for the both of us.

What were your challenges in planning your wedding so far from home?

ALISON: Sometimes it can be difficult to know what you want, because looking at magazines and TV shows (which I did) can only tell you so much. The hardest thing was letting go of some of the control, because unless you’re on the island, you can’t do a wine and food tasting session or cake tasting - but you have to trust the professionals know what they are doing, and for us it truly exceeded our expectations in every way. They blew our minds.

IAN: Yes - that’s one thing the guests keep talking about - how outstanding the food, venue and the overall day was. Like Ali says, truly exceptional.

Looking at the stunning photographs from your day, how did you come up with your wedding theme and design?

ALISON: We knew The Cliff could speak for itself, so we wanted to complement that. Unfortunately my sister

passed away from cancer 17 years ago - Ian and I decided to get married on what would have been her 26th birthday.

IAN: Every year this is always a difficult time for Ali and me, having also known her sister Nermin from school. We both spoke to the family and knew there was no better date to celebrate with her so this was important to us.

ALISON: The theme was elegance - we wanted light, airy and sumptuous. The flowers were all white: hydrangeas and babies breath; the setting on the beautiful sandy beach with the blue waters in the cove below the cliffs we knew would be breathtaking - and we were right! In homage to my sister (who we called little butterfly), we included a delicate feathered butterfly design on the place settings for each person - simple but effective. The atmosphere was alive with sounds of her favorite artist Mariah Carey bellowing onto the beach singing ”spread your wings and prepare to fly, for you have become a butterfly”………..

Your wedding was at The Cliff Restaurant, what was it like to get married at this renowned venue?

IAN: Honestly – it was a dream come true for us both. If you have never been it’s a MUST on the island, the food, service and atmosphere is unbelievable. Every time we go to Barbados, an evening is always set aside to visit The Cliff.

ALISON: I agree. You can’t beat it, it’s a must.

From your wedding day, what is the moment that would last with you both forever?

IAN: For me it’s got to be when I first saw Ali and she walked down the steps and came towards me. She took my breath away.

ALISON: Yes - for me too, the moment I saw Ian I couldn’t stop smiling. That feeling is a unique one.

From the sounds of it, your wedding weekend was a party the whole time with lots of activities. Can you share what you and Ian did with your guests?

ALISON: We wanted to blow their minds! Ian’s family had never been to the Caribbean before, and some of our friends the same – so we wanted a week of celebrations that they’d never forget. We started with us all arriving on the same day - some on the same flight. Some of the guests didn’t know each other, so we planned a night out at Harbour Lights the night after the arrival to get

everyone acquainted. It was the best thing we did! There were fire eaters, calypso dancers, stilt walkers, fire limbo dancers, a band and live singer, steel pans, rum punch and Caribbean food. We all danced the night away! It just set the tone from the start that this was going to be like no other wedding they’d ever been to.

IAN: I’ve never seen my mum and dad dance so much, like that night at Harbour Lights. Ali’s idea was to give them an experience as a wedding favour gift, so on the day of the wedding, we presented them with a private cruise which was going to take place a couple of days later. We set sail in the Caribbean waters where they snorkeled with turtles, dived to see the shipwrecks and enjoyed the sun, sea, drinks, dancing and food all day long. To be honest no one wanted to leave, we knew everything had come together beautifully.

For brides planning a destination wedding in Barbados what advice would you give them, after experiencing this process your self?

ALISON: My advice would be to go with the best wedding planner on the island, because that will give you peace of mind – for me Malissa was exceptional at her job. Give yourself a reasonable amount of time so you don’t feel rushed; 12 months in advance is perfect. Have everything on the day that you and your fiancé want - whatever it is - because it is fundamentally about you and your experiences. Finally have it filmed, and allow yourself to enjoy every moment of your special day because when you sit down and watch the video back at home for the first time you will relive it all over again! It’s truly magical.

The amazingly talented floral designer, Robert Carter of Petals in Paradise, took on the challenge of transforming the courtyard at Fustic into a mesmerizing and simply stunning design for a wedding reception, full of whimsical touches: twinkling crystal, feathered birds, organza chair covers and over-the-top floral displays for the table design follow a silver and pastel palette with a pop or two of pink; tall floor lanterns and hanging glass balls with tiny lights wound into the vines create a beautifully romantic ambiance as the sun sets.

Whites and pinks abound, juxtaposing with the verdant, lush green plants that encompass the main house yet blend in seamlessly with the natural surroundings as if they had always been there. Fustic House is simply perfection in paradise, and definitely brideLIFE approved!

The epitome of grace and elegance, Fustic House is imbued with the unique theatrical imprint of Oliver Messel, who originally transformed this 18th century plantation house into a stunning 11 acre estate high on a cliffside overlooking the ocean on the northernmost part of Barbados’ famed west coast. In order to have your wedding at Fustic House, the property requires the the minimum amount of nights for rental: in summer (April 15 – December 14) it is five nights and in the winter months is seven nights.

The estate at Fustic House can hold a maximum of 80 guests for a wedding, cocktail party or event in the grounds only.

Any function held at Fustic House will require the equivalent of one night’s rental as a venue fee.

The chef and staff at Fustic House can cater for a maximum of 25 guests. Any more than that will require private catering to be arranged through one of their recommended vendors, all of whom have been vetted for high levels of service and quality of product.

Music. One of the most integral elements for any wedding or event, but one that tends to be overlooked. Music not only sets the tone for the day and creates a subtle ambiance for the bride to walk down the aisle; it entertains guests while they are arriving at the ceremony and waiting for the bride, accompanies the signing of the register and brings a romantic feel to the day. “Music makes the wedding and creates the atmosphere for the event,” explains David Collins, classically trained guitarist and the only musician in Barbados who plays classical and finger-style guitar, providing not only instrumental music but vocals as well.

A one-stop shop, David supplies all the sound equipment needed, as well as visiting the venue in advance to find out where he will be setting up and meeting the bride & groom to make sure all details are taken care of. “When playing, it’s important to consider the location – will it be too loud if I am close to the guests? How will the space convey sound to the back of the room? It’s not just about sitting down and playing – there are many angles to take into account.”

Taking great pride in his musicianship, he practises often and is dedicated to providing a professional service from the first contact through to the actual event, taking performing at weddings very seriously: “it reminds me of the close link music has with creating memories. I

feel lucky to be able to share these special moments in people’s lives.”

Rather than apply a ‘cookie-cutter’ approach to the music choices for a wedding, David likes to consult with the couple to find out more about their taste in music, their favourite artists and special songs that have meaning to them and makes recommendations to the couple.

Most weddings have a general format with music playing a part throughout; as guests arrive at the ceremony, the procession down the aisle, the signing of the register, a sand or candle ceremony and the reception. Different pieces are chosen for each, and David can make suggestions for a DJ or a band that suits the couple’s taste if required.

While many couples that choose to get married in the Caribbean may want something very ‘island-style’ such as a steelpan band, David explains that a guitar can be quite versatile and adds a level of sophistication: “Entertainment is an integral part of any event; the sound of a guitar is much softer than the harsh tones of steelpan, and can be altered to suit all the different elements during a wedding. It’s also the perfect choice when space is a premium such as churches or more intimate venues.”

Having invested in a mobile sound system that can easily fit into small spaces but still produces a high quality sound, David has a flexible and can-do approach as a recent experience at a wedding held at The Lone Star on the west coast shows: “I was supposed to play on the beach but when I got there it was pouring rain! A last minute decision was made to move everything upstairs to the balcony. Thankfully my equipment is easy to move and it took me no more than 10 minutes to set up; then I was asked to move and play in the actual restaurant!”

David explains how his style of musicianship comes into it’s own: “brides really enjoy the cocktail hour, the time after the ceremony and at the early stages of the reception before dinner. This is where my guitar playing works beautifully! As the evening progresses, and the party really starts, then the DJ or band takes over.”

One of his favourite moments is after the ceremony or event “when the bride & groom tell you how much they appreciate what you’ve done.”

Not sure how to choose music for your wedding? Here are David’s suggestions and tips to make the process go smoothly:

1. Choose a song that has meaning, or is a song the couple identify with.

2. Choose music that suits the event: lyrics are important! You may love the song, but the lyrics might be inappropriate.

3. Churches can be very particular: some priests will ask what songs are being played and want to review the lyrics.

4. Enjoy the process: David shares his advice about the music for the event and can make recommendations for a DJ and/or band to compliment the event.

5. Have faith in the musician’s experience and knowledge! Many brides worry that the music won’t suit the event and David can usually find a suitable compromise.

6. Good musicians will be open to customising music to the couple’s requests.

7. Choosing the music is a collaborative experience! Once initial contact is made, David makes general suggestions and can create a personalised musical selection.

8. Get your music choices organised early: at least a month in advance if not more, especially for a more intricate piece. David prefers to memorize pieces beforehand.

Having become somewhat of a bridal fashion guru, Mark has worked with Elegant Bride and WeTV and is now expanding into tableware and paper product collaborations.

Mark takes pride in his staff, a close-knit group who he considers family. For most of us, the thought of affiliating and establishing ourselves amongst the echelons of the rich and famous is a thing of whimsical fancy and daydream. We have all, at one time or the other, imagined ourselves living a jet-set life where exotic locales and beach front mansions feature as a part of our everyday lives. Reality, however, rears it’s less than ideal head while sitting at our desk jobs or stewing in a hot traffic jam, and shatters our dreams with a cruel blow.

Now this paints a pretty extreme picture, as most of us are really content with our lot in life. We know that hard work and perseverance is what gets us through, and the hardships we face create a striving for excellence and a sense of gratification for the little blessings, whatever they may be.

Never has this attitude been better expressed than in the likeness of Ms. Donna Smith. Anyone who is familiar with Donna knows that she is the proud proprietor of two of the island’s most prestigious beauty salons – Sass Beauty

Salons in The Fairmont Royal Pavilion and Cobbler’s Cove Hotels – located on Barbados’s Platinum Coast; that she is in demand as one of the island’s top hair stylists for weddings and events and also has a successful mobile hairdressing business – Hair By Donna.

Life was not always so rose-tinted and rainbow hued for Donna. Hers is a real life Cinderella story, in a sense, and her humble beginnings have shaped her into the wonderful person that she is today. I had the good luck of sitting down with Donna for a good old chat to see what it is that makes this lady tick.

Donna, at the age of fifteen, an age where for most of us the biggest source of stress is maybe a math test in school on Monday, found herself a teenage mother in need of a job. Coming from a poverty stricken home, Donna was no stranger to hardship, and she found herself employedat her sister-in-law’s salon, sweeping floors and serving refreshments to patrons. Her keen eye, attention to detail and passion to break free of the struggle, encouraged Donna to learn all that she could about the business, eventually landing her a position as hairdresser at the upscale Sandy Lane Hotel.

This environment sparked such a fire in Donna, that is, 33 years later, yet to be put out. After studying abroad at Vidal Sassoon Salons in London (where she returns annually for refresher courses), Donna has become the best and most in demand bridal hair stylist in Barbados. And her reputation precedes her. She has been known, throughout her successful career, to have rubbed shoulders with many a celebrity, from Madeleine Albright and Bill and Hilary Clinton, to Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest.

Barbados being one of the top holiday destinations in the Caribbean, it’s not surprising that Donna would have the opportunity to style the hair of a glamorous movie star or two. Pictures of the famous personalities she has had the good fortune to meet adorn the walls of her salon and she states that is has been an honour to make the acquaintance of famous people who she states humbly are “just like regular people”.

As successful as Donna is, she remains humble and warm hearted in all aspects. When asked what she finds the most challenging about her career – “Time keeping! Especially at Christmas and New Year’s“, she says with a good natured grimace, when an average working day for Donna can be from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm! Yikes!

But, being no stranger to hard work, she can say that along with the challenges she loves what she does and enjoys meeting people. Her mobile hair styling creates the opportunity for Donna to interact and relate with her clients in a more intimate way than the salon atmosphere can provide and she claims that she “likes to see how relaxed people are in their own environments”.

service for 20 years or more, and the proof of her success is not hard to see. After such a long time in the business there has got to be a few funny anecdotes or stories of wedding day mishaps in her memory, right? I asked Donna to share one or two “hair-raising” debacles with our readers. She laughed obligingly and claimed, “there are certain words you should never say to a bride on her wedding day – EMERGENCY is one of them!” “From fainting brides to burnt veils, I’ve seen it all!” she says.

She proceeded to tell me about a truly fascinating story with, luckily, a very happy ending. After being together for 6 years and having their first child, couple Kieron and Joanna Hatton decided on Barbados as the destination to tie the knot. They decided on a very intimate ceremony with just the three of them. Not hard to coordinate right? Wrong! After searching online, the couple settled for a wedding planner sourced on a recognized website.

Upon meeting the appointed planner, she was rude and unprofessional, gave them very little information in regards to venue and ceremony details, and the Hattons were at a loss as to how to proceed. On the day of the nuptials, the wedding planner was an hour late and there were no pictures or even a wedding certificate issued! The Hattons returned to the UK extremely disappointed with the whole experience along with having no evidence of their special day.

Joanna turned to her only other source of contact during the ordeal; her hairstylist Donna. Upset and saddened by the treatment the Hattons received, Donna spent a year trying to contact the parties involved and procure some form of compensation for the couple.

Finally, with the help of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, Donna was able to ensure their return to Barbados. She enlisted the help of Malissa Blackman who finally located their marriage certificate and coordinated the details for the couple to renew their vows. So, on November 23rd 2010, exactly one year after their harrowing first ordeal,

Donna and her team gave the Hattons the amazing opportunity for a second chance at the dream wedding they always desired. Fabulous hair and make-up, an intimate beach setting for exchanging of vows, professional photographer, flowers, cake, the works. All completely free of cost!

No strangers to Barbados, Deborah and Brian have visited the island for many years and bought their own vacation home on the west coast. So when they decided to tie the knot, it was no surprise that they chose Barbados as their wedding destination!

The bride and groom wanted an intimate wedding with 20 of their closest friends and family – the ceremony was held at their own home, “Fern Gully”, where they overlooked the west coast horizon and the backdrop was a beautiful gully. Guests were serenaded by solo guitarist David Collins, while Country House Caterers served sumptuous canapés and champagne.

The couple wanted the venue for their wedding reception to be something spectacular with a view of the ocean and a sense of elegance similar to Deborah’s own style. It was very important to both the bride and groom that the venue also gave their guests a taste of why they loved Barbados so much; after meeting with the Weddings by Malissa team, it was determined that The Cliff Restaurant was the perfect choice for the affair.

Being in the event and wedding industry in the UK and owning her own floral shop, Deborah was well versed in what she envisioned for her own special day; a meeting with florist Christina Foster of Simply Flowers to design the flowers included the creation of a stunning display of flowers on the archway at the entry to the ceremony location. The bride’s floral palette featured white hydrangeas, cream and pale pink spray roses, rice ferns, white cymbidium orchids, white lisianthius and other natural greenery.

Deborah’s daughter, an opera singer, treated guests to a number of her mother’s favorite songs during both the ceremony and reception, adding an exceptionally personal

Barbados was recommended by a friend, and our loved ones were excited and respectful of our desire for a destination wedding, while understanding that some of them would not be able to attend. All of our wedding desires were presented with the utmost professionalism and courtesy, while offering us great value with a personal touch. The venue was well located, very intimate, beautiful and secluded. Everything we’d asked for was presented at a reasonable price with good communication throughout the planning process.The catering was lovely and economical, and the quantity was perfect, so as not to soak up the champagne too much!

The staff were very attentive, staying within reach to assist, but far enough away not to impose.The marquee was an unexpected necessity due to the weather, yet in hindsight the ambiance would not have been the same without it, and the fresh local flowers were just gorgeous.

Given the fact that neither of us are religious, the Officiate offered a suitable, tasteful service which was just perfect. Everyone who joined us in Barbados loved it, and we hosted a party for everyone else on our return home.

We enjoyed our Barbados destination wedding very much and would certainly recommend both Barbados and Lisa’s services.

In fact, we enjoyed it so much that every time we look back on our big day we just burst into smiles!

We chose Barbados as our destination wedding location because I fell in love with The Cliff restaurant when I went to visit friends that live in Barbados. Before my husband and I were even engaged, I walked into The Cliff and said “This is it! I’m getting married here in Barbados one day!”

We wanted to have first look photos done at Bottom Bay, but it was pouring rain all day of our wedding. We ended up having our first look photos at The Harrison House. Also due to the weather and incoming tide, we had our wedding ceremony on the balcony of The Cadillac Penthouse at The Lone Star, with the wedding dinner reception in the restaurant.

Our most memorable experience of our wedding was lighting the Chinese wish lanterns. The expression on my grandfather’s face was perfection as he let go of the lit lantern and it floated into the sky! Our photographer captured that moment perfectly and it had become the favorite memory for all of our friends too.

Barbados was special for everyone not just us as the bride and groom. It was a beautiful adventurous trip for everyone that attended (28 including us) and a truly memorable occasion; Barbados made my father say “I don’t want to get out of the water!” when swimming in the crystal clear ocean. My father does not spend much time outside or in the sun due to skin cancer, but while in Barbados, he was totally relaxed and happy – this alone was one of the most wonderful things to happen during our destination wedding event!

The SOS call came from Laura 4 months before her wedding day, due to her American based wedding planner’s inability to execute her wedding in Barbados. With 70 specially invited guests due to fly in for the occasion, there was no time to waste. Laura and her Mom came to Barbados and Island Bliss took them to venues from east coast to the west coast! Upon returning to New York and talking to her fiancee, Matt, Foul Bay Beach was chosen for the ceremony and Tides Restaurant for the reception – and so the planning began!

The wedding weekend started off with a welcome dinner for all the guests at Apsara restaurant in St Lawrence Gap. Entertained by the sultry sounds of Debbie Reifer and friends, guests enjoyed a dinner of authentic Indian cuisine. On the wedding day, luxury shuttles were provided for the guests to the south east coast of the island where the ceremony took place; afterwards they quenched their thirst with icy cold Banks beers (a favourite of the bride!). For a fun mix of photo shots, the wedding party made their way to Oistins (one of the 4 towns in Barbados) to take sunset shots on the boardwalk, and then on to the reception at Tides. After the traditional formalities, it was straight to the dance floor and guests partied into the night.

The activities concluded with a relaxed midday beach event at Johnny Cool’s on the Dover beachfront; guests enjoyed tasting the local fare while reminiscing about their amazing weekend before they headed back to the US. Laura was thrilled with the outcome and shared her thoughts: “Jean and Lisa are both a pleasure to work with. Jean took the lead on planning our wedding, patiently listened to what we wanted, worked with us to craft that into a vision, and then executed it to perfection”
