NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Thibodeau is coming back to the New York Knicks, who are still seeking the success they enjoyed when he was an assistant two decades ago.

The Knicks are fin-ishing a deal to make Thibodeau their coach, a person with knowledge of the details said Saturday.

No contract has been signed but a deal is expected to be announced next week, the person told The Associ-ated Press, speaking on condition of anonym-ity because negotiations were ongoing.

ESPN first reported that the Knicks and Thibodeau were complet-ing a five-year contract.

When they do, the 2011 NBA Coach of the Year in Chicago will become the 13th differ-ent person to coach the Knicks since Jeff Van Gundy resigned early in the 2001-02 season.

Orlando Magic coach Steve Clifford was told during his team’s scrim-mage at Walt Disney World against the Los Angeles Lakers on Satur-day that Thibodeau, his longtime friend and con-

fidant, was going to get the New York job.

“Look, he’s one of my closest friends,” Clif-ford said. “He’s one of the best coaches in the league and he under-stands New York. He was in New York for a long time. New York is a different animal. He understands the fan base. He understands the New York media and he’s a great, great coach. So, he’ll do great there and it’s a great hire on their part.”

Thibodeau was an assistant under Van Gundy, who led the Knicks to the 1999 NBA Finals and into the post-season in every season he was there. New York has reached the playoffs just three times since Van Gundy’s departure.

The Knicks went 21-45 this season, missing the playoffs for a seventh straight year. Mike Miller finished the season as interim coach after David Fizdale was fired 22 games into the season.

New Knicks President Leon Rose then inter-viewed a number of can-didates before choosing Thibodeau from a field that included Jason Kidd,

former Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson and Mill-er, who impressed Rose while going 17-27 before the season was suspended in March.

San Antonio assistants Will Hardy and Ime Udoka were also candi-dates. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said both will get their opportunities but praised the choice of Thibodeau.

“Tommy’s a seasoned veteran who it goes with-

out saying understands what wins and what loses. He knows how to put a program together, create a culture and be demanding — and at the same time, make people accountable,” Popovich said.

“It’s easy to demand things, but to make peo-ple accountable and want to play the right way is not something that’s easy for everybody to do. But Tom knows it inside and

out and he’ll be a great choice to organize the situation there, develop a plan, start the culture, stick to it, be persistent and get after it. So it’s a great choice.”

Thibodeau is regarded as a demanding coach who is one of the top defensive minds in the game. He devised the defense that carried the Boston Celtics to the 2008 NBA championship as an assistant before

becoming Chicago’s coach in 2010.

He guided the Bulls to a 62-20 record as a rookie, the first of five straight postseason berths even as the team battled constant injuries to star guard Derrick Rose and others.

Overall, he is 352-246 as a head coach. He led the Minnesota Timber-wolves to the postseason in 2018 but was fired the next year during a rocky season that began with star Jimmy Butler asking to be traded.

Players around the league took notice of the pending move as well.

Heat forward Jae Crowder retweeted a clip from a 2018 game Saturday, one where he was playing for Utah and Thibodeau was coach-ing the Timberwolves. Crowder and Thibodeau got involved in a very heated war of words dur-ing the game that night, earning them both tech-nical fouls.

“CONGRATS TIBS ON THE NEW COACH-ING JOB. CANT WAIT TO HAVE THESE BATTLES WITH YOU AGAIN.!,” Crowder tweeted Saturday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jamal Adams’ wish was finally granted: He’s leav-ing New York in a stunning trade.

The Jets dealt the dis-gruntled star safety to the Seattle Seahawks on Satur-day, splitting with a gifted player whose relationship with the franchise quickly deteriorated because of a contract dispute.

New York received a massive haul in the deal, sending a 2022 fourth-round draft pick along with Adams to the Seahawks for a 2021 first-rounder, a 2022 first-rounder, a 2021 third-rounder and safety Bradley McDougald — pending physicals.

“While we had main-tained our interest in Jamal Adams having a long and successful career with the Jets, we know it’s important to be prepared and willing to adjust to new offers and circum-stances,” general manager Joe Douglas said in a state-ment. “As I have always said, my job is to listen to calls and this offer was one we could not ignore.”

The deal ended a con-tentious several months for Adams and the Jets, a situation that increas-ingly appeared headed for a divorce when the two-time Pro Bowl selection criticized ownership early in the week and then took shots at coach Adam Gase and Douglas in an inter-view with the Daily News published Friday.

“To NY & especially the Jets fans, I love you & will always love you.” Adams wrote in a Twitter post. “You all will hold a special place in my heart forever. When I came into the league, you embraced me & watched me grow! We went through it all together. Thank you for the Luv & support these 3 years. #Prez Out.”

Adams followed that up with a message to the Seahawks and their fans in a Twitter post that includ-ed a graphic of the safety in his new team’s uniform.

“You have a man on a mission,” he wrote, “a man all in on winning a Super Bowl, being the best leader & teammate he can be, & a man who will give

everything he has to the city of Seattle and to the 12s all across the world. Thank you for believing in me!”

The 24-year-old former LSU star was drafted sixth overall by the Jets in 2017. He quickly established himself as a fan favorite and one of the best play-ers at his position, being selected for the last two Pro Bowls and making the All-Pro squad last year.

But Adams’ relationship with the franchise began to take a turn last October.

The safety was angered when Douglas fielded phone calls from teams inquiring about Adams’ availability at the trade deadline. Douglas made it clear the cost for Adams would be exorbitant, a sign the Jets had no interest in dealing him. But Adams felt the team shouldn’t have even lis-tened to other teams’ offers.

Adams went a week without speaking to Doug-las or Gase before smooth-ing things after talking with CEO and chairman Christopher Johnson.

Adams was seeking an extension from the Jets, who didn’t budge since they had control over his contract through 2021 and could have also potentially placed the franchise tag on him in 2022. Douglas and Johnson said they hoped to make Adams a Jet for life, but Adams wanted his contract situation resolved

this year.When it appeared that

wouldn’t happen, Adams made it clear he wanted out. He asked the team for a trade last month, and listed several teams to which he’d prefer to be dealt — including Seattle. Adams then used social media to criticize the team and capped things with the Daily News interview in which he said he didn’t feel Gase was “the right leader for this organiza-tion to reach the Promised Land” and saying Douglas wasn’t being straight with him or his agents.

A day later, Adams was headed out of town — after Douglas received an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“This trade provides us with a unique opportu-nity to improve our team with multiple first-round picks in each of the next two years and the flex-ibility to continue to build this team for the future,” Douglas said. “Adding Bradley McDougald’s con-sistency and production to this year’s team was an important piece that gives us more experience on defense.”

Seattle general manager John Schneider hasn’t been afraid to give up first-round picks for star play-ers in the past. They did so in the trade that brought Percy Harvin to Seattle in 2013. Schneider did it again in 2015 when he brought tight end Jimmy Graham to Seattle. In both

instances, the Seahawks thought the proven player was worth more than what would have been a late first-round pick.

But never has Seattle relinquished this much of a haul for one player.

Seattle’s pass defense was a weakness a season ago, but the problems were a combination of issues in the secondary and a lousy pass rush that was among the worst in the league even with Jadeveon Clowney in the mix. Seat-tle was 27th in the league in pass defense.

The secondary improved after the acquisition of Quandre Diggs at midsea-son from Detroit, and the combination of Diggs and Adams in the secondary has significant upside for the Seahawks.

McDougald was a valu-able piece of Seattle’s secondary after his arrival in free agency before the 2017 season after four years in Tampa Bay. His versatility proved vital in his ability to play both safety positions. Before becoming a full-time start-er, McDougald at times filled in for strong safety Kam Chancellor and free safety Earl Thomas.

McDougald started 30 of 31 regular season games played the past two sea-sons, and finished with at least 70 tackles in each of his three seasons with the Seahawks. He also had five interceptions over the past two seasons.

Jets trade Adams to Seahawks

Associated PressAFC safety Jamal Adams of the New York Jets walks off the field at halftime during the NFL Pro Bowl game Jan. 26 in Orlando, Fla. The Jets traded disgruntled star safety Adams to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, splitting with a gifted player whose relationship with the franchise quickly deteriorated because of a contract dispute.

CHICAGO (AP) — There was a familiar and welcome sight on the ice at Fifth Third Arena on Saturday morning: Corey Crawford.

The Chicago Blackhawks’ top goaltender returned to the ice after missing nearly all of training camp. It’s another sign Crawford will be joining the team when they travel to Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday ahead of their play-in series against the Oilers, which begins Aug. 1.

“I tested positive for COVID, so I had to quar-antine in my place here the last few weeks,” he said. “That was the case for my absence at camp. I’m excited to be back. Try and get into it as quick as possible and try and get in game shape there.”

Crawford had been ruled “unfit to participate” all camp. He described his symptoms as “flu-like”.

“I’d say it was a lot tougher at the start,” he said. “The first few days I started feeling symp-toms, that was the hardest. The last couple of weeks was maybe a little bit easier.

“I still couldn’t really do much in case there was something wrong with my lungs or my heart. We had to get that checked out first before I really started pushing in the gym more or come on the case. All that has been done. I’m just excited to be seeing pucks again.”

Coach Jeremy Colliton called Crawford’s case uncharted territory: “We listened to the medical team and the guidelines that had been set.”

Crawford and Connor Murphy greeted each other on the first rink, then Crawford stretched and skated alone on the second rink. He then took part in drills with fellow goaltender Collin Delia and coaches.

During the first scrimmage, Crawford gave up three goals in fairly quick succession — the first to Brent Seabrook, who slid on the ice and pumped his fist. Brandon Hagel and Reese John-son scored the other goals.

In the other net, Malcolm Subban shut out a collection of top-six forwards. Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen faced off in the second scrim-mage.

Sportsnet.ca’s Mark Spector reported Friday that Crawford was among the 31 names the Hawks submitted to the NHL for their roster. The official announcement will come from the league, but there was no word as of Saturday.

Crawford’s return would be at least an emotion-al boost for the team, but the question remains whether he can get up to speed in time to play against the Oilers.

Before Crawford’s return to the ice, Colliton said: “It’s our job to get him ready as quickly as we can. And we’ll go from there.”

Subban has 60 starts scattered over five NHL seasons, while Delia has 18 over two seasons, with the majority coming in 2018-19.

The Hawks plan to practice Sunday after land-ing in Edmonton, take Monday off, then practice Tuesday in preparation for their exhibition game against the Blues on Wednesday.

Jonathan Toews marveled at the situation Craw-ford and the Hawks find themselves in.

“What can you do? It is what it is,” Toews said Thursday. “Give Crow credit, he’s always risen to the occasion. When he’s gotten in tight spots or when he’s been hurt, he comes back and plays great. I laugh because the amount of preparation that a guy like me needs to go play at my best as opposed to a guy like Crow who can just pop in there, it’s almost the expectation for him.
