TABLE OF CONTENTS

The architect should strive continually to simplify; the ensemble of the rooms should then be carefully considered that comfort and utility may go hand in hand with beauty.

STUDENT RESIDENCE PROJECT

The Student Residence Project required me to design a 1600 sq ft two storey house suitable for 3 international students. Upon visiting the site I was largely inspired by the shape of the land and the amount of open space available. I took advantage of the immense yard and views by design-ing the upper floor of the house to be the main living space; with a large deck and large windows to provide 360 degree views of the entire property. I kept a very modern approach when designing the house by using window-walls and con-temporary cladding along with flat and shed roofs.

LAWYER OFFICE RENOVATION

The Lawyer Office Renovation challenged me to de-sign a space to it’s maximum potential. I had to meet the clients needs of providing five lawyer offices, two closing offices, an eleven desk sectretarial pool as well as the stan-dard rooms requird in an office; all of which had minumum square footage requirements. My main goal in designing this space was to provide maximum views and daylight to the people spending the most time in the office as well as orientating the spaces as efficiently as possible. To break up the spaces and provide a more comfortable feeling I used gypsum board ceilings with pot lights in the hallways and a distinctive drop feature above the boardroom table.

ZERO LOT LINE HOUSE

The Zero Lot Line House was designed for a medium density neighbourhood in Burnaby, BC. To qualify as a zero lot line house, one of the walls had to be built on the property line and therefore became a firewall. This cre-ated challenges in orienting the rooms and spaces to give them all daylight and window openings. My design in-voles a large, open second floor for public gathering with a sloped window-wall to allow maximum daylight into the space. The master suite was separated from the two other bedrooms to allow for more privacy and reduced sound transmission. Cladded with rough cut stone, vertical metal siding, and wood; the building has a very intriguing curb appeal.

CYPRESS COURT PROJECT

The Cypress Court Project is a mixed use building com-bining retail, office, and residential spaces as efficiently as possible. The design challenged us to maximize floor area while retaining separation between the main uses for func-tionality and privacy. To provide maximum frontage on West Fourth for the retail units, the office and residential entrance /lobby are located off of Cypress. We incorpo-rated different size one and two bedroom units to provide suitable living spaces for multiple types of people and fami-lies. The façade is a made up of finished concrete, vertical metal siding, and horizontal hardyboard which compli-ments the building form to create a warm, modern look.

LADNER WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

The Ladner Waterfront Development is a proposal for one of eight sites to revitalize the waterfront area along Chisolm street in Ladner, BC. All eight sites will be con-nected with a boardwalk on both the front and back of the building. Our design incorporates a icecream/chocolate shop along Chisolm street and a small bistro overlooking the water on the back. In order to create a tourist destina-tion in Ladner, the main use of our building is a bed and breakfast. The main reception and breakfast area is located on the south east corner of the building with a large sloped glass skylight to provide natural daylight and heating. The suites range in size from one bed to three beds and feature a full kitchen with fridge and stove and two full size bath-rooms for convenience. To make the most use of space each suite has it’s own private roof deck off the third floor loft.

BARCELONA PAVILLION

The Barcelona Pavillion, designed by Mies van der Rohe, was constructed for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain. Our term project in architectural graph-ics was to model the pavillion in 3D using autoCAD and 3ds Max Design and then render it to look as realistic as pos-sible. All the materials were created using pictures of the actual building in Barcelona.
