There are a few brilliant ones who get their favorite branch in the college of

their choice. Others have to decide what to choose?? College or Branch??

It is really important question and its answer will have major impact on the

future!!!

In our opinion, if you are well informed and know pros & cons of the

branch you want to choose then give preference to the branch. Otherwise

try to get admission in the good college you can get.

AICTE (Apex body of Government of India) notified that “If college is NBA accredited then only it can increase

intake or add new course”

Now a day, it is difficult for the colleges to increase intake. Supply of engineers will not rise dramatically.

Demand of engineers may rise sharply

in near future because of “Make in

thAfter 12 Science, parents & students have lot of questions related to branch selection and career opportunities

after completing engineering. “Which Branch?” is the most important question.

Generally it is seen that students take decision emotionally, either based on euphoria or myth or friends.

They don't have statistical information and knowledge about the past and forthcoming trend & demand.

Analysis of admission trend / branch selection for past 38 years in Gujarat.

Note that this is admission trend, not industrial demand or job opportunity trend

§

§

If students select branch by euphoria then Golden years

of such students' carrier are spent in struggle rather than

success.

Parent's financial condition, family environment, work

suited for student, etc. should be considered before

finalizing branch.

Branch is your carrer, ultimiate destination and college is a path to achieve it.

Types of Branch

§

§

Branch is your career (area of work, ultimate destination) in which you will work life time.

Today, more than 35 types of branches are offered by more than 120 colleges in Gujarat.

§

§

§

w

§

Specialized branches are designed for specific type of work based on demand, time & location.

Automobile, IC, Mechatronics, Production are examples of specialized branch.

Specialized branches have limited scope for jobs, job areas & locations.

For example, Mechanical engineer can work in automobile industry but automobile engineer cannot work

in other fields of mechanical engineering. Moreover automobile engineers have scope in limited region

where automobile industries are concentrated like Haryana, Pune, etc…

If you have enough information about these types of branches and ready to relocate anywhere in the country

then you may prefer specialized branch otherwise basic branch should be selected.

Specialized Branch

Other Branch§

§

§

§

Aeronautical, Bio-Technology, Food Processing, Nano Technology, Rubber, Plastics, etc. are other branches.

These types of branch are available only in one or two colleges.

Before selecting this type of branch, Do visit college and gather information from currently studying students.

Select other branch only if you have family business because job opportunities are very rare.

§

§

Branches which are required or applicable in most of the industries are known as basic branch.

Any type of industry has following area of work

Basic Branch (Core Branch)

Who should select Civil Engineering?

§

§

§

Civil engineering is the oldest branch in the history of human kind. It is related to civilization

Civil engineering deals with the planning, design, construction of highways, rail, bridges, dams, airports, etc.

Civil engineer takes place in the public sector from municipal to central governments, and in the private sector

from individual builders to international companies.

Specialization can be done in many areas like structural, construction, water resources, architectural,

environmental, geotechnical, transportation, etc.

The student who is rough & tough by nature, can work in any season and ready for physical work on site &

remote areas.

If a student is looking for govt. job or planning to start construction business then may give first preference to

this branch.

Good command on mathematics and drawing are expected.

§

§

Computer engineering has started digital revolution that has changed our lives completely.

Computer engineering deals with design, implementation and management of software, website, apps, etc.

Computer engineering is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications.

Computer engineering has spread its roots in all engineering areas.

Computer is the only branch where an engineer can become millionaire by doing only job.

As on date, more number of computer engineers are working in Rajkot than any other branch.

Student not willing to do field work and prefer office job.

If student is looking for job immediately after graduation then computer engineering is right choice.

The student should have logical, reasoning & puzzle solving skills and able to work 10 hours continuously.

Computer engineering is the right choice for those who born and brought up in cities.

If a student is planning to start white collar business without investment then computer is right choice.

This is one of the broadest branches from of all engineering majors and is much more than just building

electrical circuits.

It mainly deals with power generation, transmission to substation, distribution and electrical machines.

Electrical engineer can pursue post-graduation in power system, instrumentation & signal processing, PAED,

system & control, automation control & robotics, renewable energy, etc.

The students who have deep interest in electrical power and related technologies are highly sought in this field.

§

§

§

Who should select EC Engineering?

§

§

§

EC deals with systems related to acquiring, communicating, manipulating and analyzing information.

EC covers wide area of applications from small sensor to huge satellites, simple calculators to super

computers, microwave ovens to missiles, mobile phones to medical electronics, automation in industries to

electronics in automobiles etc.

EC engineering is a blend of both hardware and software skills which is highly demanded in the market. This

also opens up opportunities in fields related to IT/Computer, IC, Electrical, Biomedical, Mechatronics, etc.

EC is one of the soft branches where office type jobs are more compared to field jobs.

EC is one of the most preferred branches for those aspiring to go abroad or make career with MNCs.

Plenty of local opportunities for starting business of service and maintenance.

College Selection

§

§

§

§

Key parameters to select the college

In the recent past, numerous engineering colleges have come up in our state.

Students have plenty of choices for college selection but at the same time it has become more complex &

confusing.

Last year, many colleges got less than 50% students of their sanctioned intake.

If you are well informed, know pros & cons of branch of your choice and you have well planned career path

then give first preference to the branch otherwise try to get admission in a good college.

When you compare two or more colleges, keep intake of the college in mind. e.g. College with 1000 intake should

have double resources and faculties compared to the college with 500 intake.

1. Faculties (Most Important) :

Faculties are the soul, heart & brain of any college. Main points to analyze are…

a. Numbers of Faculties

b. Educational Qualification

c. Experience of Faculties with various institution & industries

d. Industrial Exposure & Consultancy Services

e. Stability of Faculties

2. Campus Environment :

To be a good engineer & human, campus environment should be disciplined and academic. Companies give

more weightage to the academic environment at the time of placement.

3. Infrastructure :

Main components of infrastructure are…

a. Equipment in Laboratories

b. Machine Tools in Workshop

c. Books & Other Resources in Library

d. Student Store & Cafeteria

e. Recreation & Sports

§

utmost care should be taken before finalizing the college. Don't run behind past reputation.

College Environment, Faculties and other things change very quickly in today's rapidly changing world, hence

Page 11: BRANCH COLLEGE€¦ · Whereas, demand of engineers is continuously and constantly increasing in industries in India. Demand of engineers may rise sharply in near future because of

11

4. Result :

GTU result is a direct reflection of faculty quality, teaching standard, academic environment and personal care

of the college. Result should be compared with reference to admission closing merit rank as it reflects efforts

of the college.

5. Placement :

Parents & students give more weightage to the placement but placement is result of above listed parameters.

Now a day, companies arrange common placement interview at any of the college and students from all good

colleges of that region are invited for the campus drive. It is also important to note that placement is generally

branch specific; it depends on market environment, job scenario, etc.

6. Fee Structure (Value for Money) :

Higher Education has become costly and affordability is reduced. Hence Fee is also one of the key parameter.

College fee varies between 50,000 to 2,00,000.

7. Intake :

Overcrowded campus may bring down individuals importance and deterioration in quality. Intake of top

colleges like Nirma, BVM, GCET, DDIT are unchanged since many years.

8. College Timing :

College timing should gives sufficient time to students for career development and other activity of interest.

9. Transportation :

Transportation facility provided by the college is safe, secure and time saving.

College information like faculties, infrastructure, fees; placement, timing, transportation, etc. are available on

college website.

Result related information are available on www.gtu.ac.in or www.gtuinfo.in

Campus environment, quality of faculties & teaching, etc. can be gathered from current students of college.

How to collect this information?

§

§

§

Must do things before finalizing college

1. Sort list 3 to 4 colleges that match with your criteria.

2. Personally visit these colleges.

3. Meet management representative, head of departments, faculties, students.

4. Currently studying students are real testimony of an institute and they can

give you real facts and figures about that college.
