Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriot/Patriot Basketball Schedule 2011-12 (See Girls, on Page 21) County Cougars outscored the Patriots 35-18 in the second half on their way to a 65-50 win. Friday night—in a critical district match-up at Barren County—the Tro- jans pulled away in the final minute to edge AC-S 54-47. Logan County AC-S’s week started with a continuation of the effort exhibited in the Patriots’ up- set win over a short-handed Glasgow team on January 13. Senior Josh Jones bur- ied three three-point shots and senior Thaxton Spears added a three to help AC-S counter the early scoring from the Cougars. Jones’ fourth three of the game and a free throw lifted the Patriots to their biggest lead of the game, a 23-17 margin early in the second. The Cougars clawed with- in two, 32-30, by halftime before taking control in the third. A basket by Twin Lan- caster tied the score at 32 at the 7:18 mark of the third. Back-to-back hoops from To- rin Graham, a Lancaster put back, a jumper from Avery Collier and a steal and score by Lancaster gave the visi- tors a 42-35 lead at the 3:34 point of the third. Twice the Patriots pulled back within four. By the end of the third, Logan County led 51-44. The Cougars settled the contest with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth to push their lead to 14. A three from Jarod Walden narrowed the Cou- gars lead to 11 but was quickly answered by a bas- ket from Sojuan Watkins. Logan maintained an 11-13 point margin until a pair of late free throws gave the Cougars their final 15-point margin. Jones, held to a lone bas- ket and a pair of free throws over the final 23 minutes of action, finished with 20 points to lead AC-S. While Jones was the only Patriot in double figures, Logan Coun- ty had four with 14 or more points. Watkins led the way with 16; Graham added 15. Lancaster and Ryan Harper added 14. The Patriots were 18-52 from the floor, including eight-of-24 shooting from three-point range. AC-S made five of their first eight free throws before going cold from long range. The Cougars sank 24 of their 50 shots, including four three- pointers. AC-S was six of nine at the foul line com- pared to Logan County’s 13- 21. Barren County Friday, the outcome of the Patriots’ battle with the Trojans was determined by three key stretches of action. The first came near the end of the first half. The Patriots rallied from an early four- point deficit (6-2) to lead 13-12 as the first period ex- pired. AC-S stretched their lead to four as Jones sank a three pointer at the 3:58 point of the second, giving the Patriots an 18-14 lead. However, Barren County held AC-S without a hoop the rest of the period. Bas- kets by Jacolby Poore, Dal- ton Bush and Bryce Hibbard enabled the hosts to grab a 22-18 lead at the half. The Patriots retook the lead in the third. Connor Ross’s three-point play and a Spears lay-in at the 4:52 mark put AC-S ahead 25- 24. Ross added three free throws to lift his team to a 30-26 lead at the 3:09 mark, setting the stage for another key series as the Trojans answered with a 9-0 run to close the third. After a pair of Hubbard free throws, a Poore basket gave the Trojans the 31-30 lead with 1:12 left. The Tro- jans lead remained at one until the final seconds of the third. Senior Patriot reserve Charles Bunton was whis- tled for a charge. Bunton’s objection to the call resulted in a technical. Bush sank one of the two technical foul shots to push the lead to two. Then, Bush swished a three as time expired in the frame to give Barren County a 35-30 lead. “We had a good control of the game until that last two- minute stretch of the third,” Willet said. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot with some bad fouls and getting lost on defense.” After falling behind by seven early in the fourth, AC-S would regroup and make things interesting in the final minutes. Junior Matthew Holder’s three- point basket with 2:38 left capped a 12-7 AC-S run to get the Patriots within two, 44-42. However, the Trojans answered as Bush scored and Brett Billingsly sank a pair of free throws. Spears answered for the Patriots, Clay Simmons sank free throws for the Trojans, only to see Jones bury a three to pull AC-S within three, 50- 47. After Charlie McCoy missed two free throws with 34 seconds left, AC-S had a chance to tie. However, Jake Sikes’ look from the corner was long. Barren County’s Billingsley grabbed the re- bound, was fouled and sank two throws to push the lead to five. After Spears missed on a three, Bush grabbed the board. Fouled immedi- ately, the Trojan added his final points of the night to give Barren County the sev- en-point win. “We fought back and showed a lot of character,” Coach Willett said. “We had a pretty decent look to tie.” The loss overshadowed a game in which a patient Patriot team sank 17 of 34 field goals compared to Bar- ren County’s 18-45 shoot- ing. The Patriots were 10-16 from the floor while Barren County was 17-30. The Tro- jans outrebounded the Pa- triots 30-23. Jones led AC-S with 19. Ross added 10. Poore led Barren County with 15.
