A Closer Look at Islam

Join Ellen Hogue and Kay Rieve in this follow up to last spring’s review of the world’s major religions and will take a much deeper look at Islam, delving into the questions of: Where did Islam originate? What do Muslims believe? What similarities and differences are

there between Christianity and Islam? How can Christians and Muslims best relate to one another?

This four week course will include a retreat—open to anyone, even non-attenders of the Sunday class—on Saturday, September 23 from 9:00 am-Noon. It will culminate with a guest speaker, Usjid Hameed, from The Council on American-Islamic Relations on Sunday, October 1 at 10:00 am.

Please bring your completed Talent Survey to church and put them in the collection plates or drop them off in the Office. We will be collecting them through the month of September. CHANGING… YET THE SAME One of the youth I worked with while serving in Surfside Beach began her athletic “career” by playing recreational league softball in elementary school. It was around the turn of the century, so it was “slow-pitch” softball. Erin was a good athlete, but really enjoyed the time with her friends. She also excelled at soccer and enjoyed surfing. If you are familiar with the evolution of softball, that was also the time many high schools were following colleges and converting from slow-pitch to fast-pitch. (The transition in Georgia, for example, reached a peak around 2000.) As this happened, the youth leagues began realizing they needed to make a similar transition to prepare the future high school players. The game remained basically the same – ball, gloves, bats, four bases, etc. – but the rules transitioned. It was still softball although the rules changed. The new rules and expectations fit Erin’s game perfectly. She made the transition and “the rest is history.” She was a seventh-grader on St. James High School’s 2006 SC State Champion team, and went on to play for the UNC Wilmington Seahawks. It was still softball – a game she loved – even though the rules and expectations changed. We are called to have a similar flexibility in living a faithful life in today’s world. While the foundation of our faith doesn’t change, the Spirit continues to help us respond to the changes going on in the world around us. In doing this, we may see our understanding of faithful living change – even though Jesus Christ is still our Lord and Savior.

The Spirit will continue to guide us and challenge us as we respond each and every day to God’s call in our lives. God still works through us. As a part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and its predecessor denominations, many of us have seen the Spirit lead the church through many changes – yet it is still the body of Christ – led by the Spirit. We have seen churches within the Presbyterian Church, for example, embrace God’s call to include many people as elders, deacons and ministers that were previously excluded or expected to worship with “their own people.” Women… young people… minorities… immigrants… LGBT… are now in leadership roles at Boulevard and throughout the PCUSA. The leadership has changed, but the church is still the body of Christ with God at the center of everything we do. We have seen the church called on again and again to respond to the society around us – challenging our leaders to treat all people as created equal in God’s eyes. We have seen the church stress in many different ways that God’s love is there for all of God’s children, and not just for the ones who we like or we are comfortable being around. God’s love has been constant through it all, even as the Spirit has challenged us to speak up and step out and work to make sure there is justice and respect for all peoples. The Spirit will continue to lead us as the body of Christ in the years to come – no matter what happens in the world around us. As we look back in twenty more years, we may (probably) will say, “We never saw that coming…” but we will know the Spirit is still guiding us. The foundation of our faith – Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior – won’t change, but the way we live it out will continue to change. Just as Erin had to make changes in her understanding of and ways of playing softball, we need to make sure we open our lives to the leading of the Spirit – even when what the Spirit calls us to do is not what we’ve always done or what we expected to do.

“How beautiful are the feet of the messengers who announce the Good News.” To piggyback off of Preston’s message from a few weeks ago I thought I would deliver some good news for you all!

First, I will be working at Wilson Middle School in Newark Ohio teaching middle school choir. It will provide plenty of challenges but from the short time I have been working with the kids that it will be a rewarding experience.

Second, with the help of our dog Carol, a beagle/basset mix, Deborah and I would like to announce our engagement! We are very excited to begin another chapter in our lives. Our plan is to get married in August of 2018! Thank you for any prayers and advice during the coming year as we take on this transition.

Also…

As mentioned in services the past couple of weeks the Chancel Choir season is starting up again! If you have been curious about joining a music ministry, Choir - Handbells - Music Team, talk with Mary Ann and me. We would love to have you involved in our music ministry during the academic year! Whether you are an adult or a student our ministries are open to all!

Enjoy your month! Be on the look-out for details on the annual NSI concert and our Advent plans in the music department! Be blessed, Brady

Scrubbies Alert!

To keep up with the demand for scrubbies we need more crocheters! Please contact Barbara Frautschi at 614-461-1334 if you are interested. This is one of the main sources of income for Presbyterian Women’s Mission projects. Scrubbies are sold in the Lounge generally on the first Sunday of the month. Sally Neff will also take orders at 614-224-3719.

Endowment Grants

Now is the time to make an application for an Endowment Grant. During the month of September, the Endowment Committee will receive applications for grants in the categories of

Mission, Worship/Education, and Property. Applications are available on the table in the Lounge.

Flowers Beautify Worship Spaces

Our Flower Calendar is always ready to accept donor names. If you would like to donate flowers for our Sunday worship services, please pick up one of the yellow envelopes labeled “Offering for Flowers.” The envelopes are available in the Lounge or from the church office.

Simply complete the envelope, enclose your check or cash, and either drop it in the offering plate on Sunday or mail it to the church office. The cost of an arrangement is $30.00. The arrangements enhance the worship spaces for both services and then may be picked up following the 11:15 am service.

Clothing Collection Sunday

Sunday, September 10

Clothing Collection Sunday is the second Sunday of each month. Rather than holding separate drives as we have done in the past, we will now be collecting clothing for Neighborhood Services, Inc. (NSI) on a year-round basis.

Through the end of July, we have collected the following for the clothing room at NSI:

89 hats 60 pairs of gloves 87 pairs of socks

116 undergarments

Please continue to collect these items and donations can be left in the large wooden box in the narthex where we collect food items for NNEMAP. Thank you for showing Christ’s love to the children who are served by NSI.

Food Mission Sunday

Sunday, September 24

Food Mission Sunday is the fourth Sunday of each month. Our nutritional focus is food with a higher protein content.

Chunky Soup

Canned Chicken

Peanut Butter

Canned Pasta

Cans of Pork and Beans

Plus - Please consider donating toothpaste and/or toothbrushes (adult or child sizes) along with your food donations.

NNEMAP also accepts the HOTEL shampoo, soap, lotion and coffee packets provided to guests. These sample products can be offered to NNEMAP clients when resources for these items are low. And, of course, those brown paper grocery bags are always welcomed.

Please place your donations in the large wooden cabinet in the narthex, the one with the ‘Food Mission’ sign on it. A Big Thanks from NNEMAP!

Thank You from Buckhorn

Dear Boulevard Family, Thank you for your continued support of Buckhorn. You help us keep the lights on, so to speak. Your donations help us provide personal hygiene items for the kids in our care. It allows us to take them to the park for picnics so they can experience a sense of normalcy in their lives. So often it is easy to take for granted those things that become familiar to us, like donations given on a consistent bases. Please know we do not take you or your donations for granted. We thank God daily for you! Without you we would cease to exist. So thank you for your continued support. Thank you! Lisa Brown VP Community Engagement

Preschool is off to a great start for the Full Day Program as of August 16. We are excited for the Part Day Program to join us at school on September 11. Everyone had a wonderful summer, and we are now ready for cool weather and fall activities! Visit Boulevard during the day and hear the happy voices of our children!

Testing Success! Hilltop Preschool started their summer with incredible news!

Here’s what Executive Director Laura Moehrman says: "Post-test data of children from the

2016-17 school year has recently been made available. We are very proud to announce that 81% of our students demonstrated literacy skills at the level of average or above. This may not seem remarkable; however, when considering the challenges of children of poverty, and the pre-test levels showing 50% of children demonstrating below average levels in Fall of 2016, it is evident that something impressive is happening among the Hilltop Preschool community.”

Hooray for Hilltop’s children! And thanks to the dedicated Hilltop Preschool staff and the enrichment of the many varied experiences regularly incorporated into their program. Donating to Boulevard’s Library and Book Drive has a direct effect on the reading results for Hilltop Preschool. By helping to provide books for the library and the children, you are helping them succeed! Thank you for your support!

August Mission Focus

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

This month’s mission focus is on Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the emergency and refugee program of PCUSA, which enables congregations and mission partners

of PCUSA to care for communities who have been adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic events.

Their core budget, including staff and administrative costs, is funded through the One Great Hour of Sharing collection. Their program work is additionally funded through designated gifts by individuals and congregations. This means that every dollar you donate goes to the disaster you have specified unlike m any other disaster relief organizations who must use part of your donation for administrative costs.

When disasters occur and you wish to help out, you may send a check directly to them or make out your check to Boulevard Presbyterian and note PDA and the name of the disaster you are donating to on the memo line and the church will forward the amount to PDA.

Please visit their website at www.pda.pcusa.org to learn more.

PDA Statement of Values

We believe the church is called to manifest God’s gracious love for all people in a wounded world. Therefore, we will respond to human suffering based on need, without discrimination based on the race, religion or nationality of recipients and without adverse distinction of any kind.

We believe that all persons are created in the image of God. Therefore, we will ensure that the role and contributions of women are recognized and supported through our response.

We believe that God’s will is a restored and reconciled human community. Therefore, we will include components of spiritual accompaniment and psycho-social assistance, advocacy and peace building that contribute to this vision, and guard against any actions that would do further harm to communities.

We believe that God gives all people dignity. Dignity is diminished when people are seen and portrayed as helpless victims. Therefore, we will involve affected communities in

the identification of needs, priorities, approaches and mechanisms for response. We will reflect their dignity and initiative in our communications and fundraising materials. We will guard against any abuse of power by those responsible for protection and assistance to emergency survivors and displaced people.

We believe that our vocation to service calls us to be faithful to our principles and effective in our response. Therefore, we will uphold high ethical and programmatic standards (including the Code of Conduct, Humanitarian Charter, SPHERE Standards) in all our programs.

We believe that good stewardship requires attention to the sustainability of our efforts. Therefore, we will prioritize the use of local resources (human, material, cultural, etc.) whenever possible, use approaches which strengthen existing community capacity, and integrate preparedness and prevention into the emergency response. We will engage and strengthen local expressions of the church and civil society in order to build capacity for meeting future humanitarian needs.

We believe that the church is called to be prophetic as well as to be a presence of consolation and healing. Therefore, we shall endeavor not to act as an instrument of any particular government’s policy nor accept conditions on funding that would compromise our ability to speak and act independently.

We believe our Christian witness is more clearly understood by ourselves and communicated to the world when we work together. Therefore, we will build relationships, strengthen effectiveness, and avoid duplication and waste of time, talents or resources, through our cooperation.

We believe that all resources are gifts from God and that we are accountable to those who wish to assist and those who require assistance. Therefore, we will be truthful in how we report on the nature and extent of each emergency, and how we will use the funds and other resources provided.

We believe that we must learn from our experience in order to improve the quality of emergency prevention, preparedness and response. Therefore, we will undertake ourselves and commission analysis of adherence to our values, and assess the impact of our programs, sharing the lessons learned in ways that strengthen the alliance at the national, regional, and global levels.

Boy Scout Troop 73 News

Troop 73 enjoyed a very busy summer, with lots of camping and a great deal of rank advancement. Now the school year has begun, so our Boy Scouts are much busier. Despite this, we have some campouts and other activities scheduled for the weeks ahead, including a campout near McArthur, Ohio in late September.

During the month of August, many of our Boy Scouts worked very hard on Eagle Scout projects for two of our scouts. The first of these projects involved fixing up a playground area outside the Grandview middle school. The second project was the construction of a new sidewalk outside the high school.

Troop 73 recently held a Court of Honor to recognize scouts who have earned merit badges or advanced in rank. Our Boy Scouts earned over 80 merit badges, and 17 of our scouts advanced in rank. Troop 73 meets in Fellowship Hall on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm. Boys ages 11 to 17 are welcome.

Christ has no body but yours;

no hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world.

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.

Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours. ~ St. Teresa of Avila
