Dunlopthen got the second with a lovely finish from outside the box. Hughesthen got a second goal and the Bucks third touching in shot towardgoal by Harvey Edgar from Dunlop corner.

The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at HawthorneRoad. They were in fact Everton FC’s biggest rivals. In 1889–90 Bootlebecame founder members of the Football Alliance, narrowly missing outon the football league to the blues. That season was the mostsuccessful as we finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finalsof the FA Cup, where we lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When theAlliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle becamefounder members of the new Second Division. However, despite arespectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after oneseason (and were replaced by neighbours Liverpool) and seeminglydisappeared due to financial problems.

Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic.was later formed with the new team initially playing in the LiverpoolLeagues. In 1948 when the club were elected to the LancashireCombination 2, which was won at the first attempt. However, Bootlestruggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew andfolded during the 1953–54 campaign.

In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton and played in the localleagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool CountyCombination (which we won on numerous occasions) the club revertedback to it’s It’s better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973; and a yearlater joined the Lancashire Combination, which we won in 1976 and1977. Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire CountyLeague, which was won in our first season, and we were promoted tothe First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of theleagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, whichBootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The clubspent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when weunfortunately dropped into the Second Division. However, despitefinishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool CountyCombination. In 2006 the club, with a new ground, were elected backinto Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle wonpromotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won theChampionship. In 2009/10, our first season back in the NWCFL PremierDivision Bootle finished a NWCFL highest placing of 3rd. In 2010/11finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012.

2013 saw Bootle come so close to promotion, narrowly missing out withthree games to go, and eventually finishing 3rd again. However they putthat disappointment aside to win the Liverpool Senior Cup for the firsttime in 124 years.

Game,

Good afternoon and welcome to the DeltaTaxis Stadium for today’s FA Vase gameand we welcome our visitors from theNorthern Counties East League, Parkgate.

I’m really looking forward to today’s gameand I think the Vase is a great opportunity forteams at our level to get the chance to playat Wembley.

Obviously we are only at the first round stage but even at this stage youmust have one eye on the prize. Obviously we don’t know a great dealabout Parkgate except their league position. They currently lie 3rd frombottom, but as we know with recent experience we can’t expect a resultand we will not under estimate our opponents.

It’s been a strange few weeks. We had an excellent win here lastTuesday over Runcorn Linnets, followed by a bizarre 5-5 draw withStockport Sports. That was definitely a game for the neutral. And thenthis Tuesday we were beaten by a last minute goal at Congleton.

Although I think our overall play has been good, it’s obvious that we areconceding too many goals and that is something we will be looking towork on over the next couple of fixtures.

I hope you all enjoy the game, and a positive result so we can lookforward to the next round of this excellent competition.

Twelve of our clubs hit the Wembley trail once more on Saturday, as the FA CarlsbergVase reaches the First Round stage. Runcorn Town are exempt until the Second Roundas a reward for reaching the Fifth Round last season, and they will be joined by at leastfour other clubs from our League who will emerge victorious over a fellow NWCFL rival.Local bragging rights are up for grabs in the derby clash at Park Road between CheadleTown and Stockport Sports. It’s the third season in a row that Town have reached theFirst Round and been drawn at home, and they will be hoping it’s third time lucky, as inprevious seasons they have lost to Wigan Robin Park and Bacup Borough.

The Saxons needed extra time to see off Barton Town Old Boys 5-3 in the last round, and come into the game on the back of an amazing 5-5 draw with Bootle at theStockport Sports Village last weekend. Over on the Fylde coast, AFC Blackpool hostNorton United, with the Seasiders appearing in the First Round for the first time since2010-11. Two late goals earned them a win at Winterton Rangers in the last round, andthey face a Norton side who are no strangers to recent success in the Vase, havingreached the Third Round last season when they went out to holders Dunston UTS, andthe Fourth Round the season before.

Maine Road enter the competition for the first time this season with a home tie againstAtherton LR, and the Vase is a competition that has been a bit of a problem for Roadover the years. Since 1996 they have only progressed past the First Round once, andthat was in 1997-98 when they lost to Dunston Federation Brewery in the SecondRound. LR have also found success in the Vase hard to come by in recent years, although the club enjoyed one of the most high profile ties in its history in thecompetition in season 1993-94, when they lost to Diss Town in a semi-final secondreplay at VS Rugby.

Rochdale Town have had to concede home advantage to Congleton Town, with theMayfield Sports Centre being unavailable, and the Bears will be hoping that theunexpected bonus of playing the tie at Booth Street will help them secure a place in theSecond Round for only the second time in seven seasons. The remaining eight ties seeour clubs meeting opponents from other leagues, and as ever, they face a mixture offamiliar and unfamiliar names. Bootle host Parkgate of the Northern Counties EastLeague, with the Rotherham side requiring penalties to knock out Bacup & RossendaleBorough after a replay in the last round. Bootle have had some good runs in thecompetition in the past, and will be looking for a better outcome against NorthernCounties East League opponents than last season, when they lost 3-1 at Thackleyhaving had to give up home advantage due to the condition of the pitch at the DeltaTaxis Stadium. Chadderton make a welcome appearance in the First Round for the firsttime since 1997, and opponents Athersley Recreation from the Northern Counties EastLeague Division One are playing only their second tie in the Vase, their first being a 5-0win over Northwich Flixton Villa in the previous round. During the 2005/2006 season the Steelmen finished in sixth position just missing outon a promotion place and lost 2-1 in the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire SeniorCup to an injury time goal

The 2006/2007 seasons saw Parkgate win the Wilkinson Sword Trophy and theDivision One Championship, which saw them promoted to the Premier Division.

The great surprise was the resignation of Team Manager Vinnie Brady after asuccessful season; Parkgate appointed Assistant Manager Russell Eagle to theposition of Team Manager ably assisted by his Assistant Manager Darren Grady.

2007/2008 Parkgate were semi finalist in the League Cup and County FA Senior Cupand finished 8th in the League.

Manager Russell Eagle resigned as Manager, as did Assistant Manager DarrenGrady at the end of the season to concentrate on business commitments. Parkgateappointed Sean Hutchinson as Manager and Wilf Race as Assistant Manager but atthe end of the season Wilf Race resigned his position as Assistant Manager and wasappointed the Manager of Hallam FC, Mark Smith wasappointed as Assistant Manager at Parkgate FC.

Due to a string of poor results and an 8-3 defeat atHall Road Rangers FC in October 2009 SeanHutchinson tendered his resignation. TheSteelmen moved swiftly and appointed RussellEagle as Team Manager for his second stint atthe Club and Darren Bonnington as AssistantManager but in June 2010 Russell Eagle resignedas Manager at Parkgate FC to take over asManager of newly promoted Division One sideHandsworth FC.

The Steelmen moved swiftly and appointed DouglasShelley from AFC Celtic, who appointed Wilf Race as hisAssistant for Season 2010/2011. The season proved to be the most successful in theclubs history, a new look squad saw the Steelmen finish second in the NCEL Premierand reach the Final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final at Hillsborough.

In 2011/12 Parkgate enjoyed another successful campaign with a solid top half finishand a good run in the FA Vase with Doug bringing in several exciting new playersand appointing former Macclesfield Town manager Gary Simpson as his assistant. InOctober 2012 Doug Shelley resigned from his role at Parkgate, he was swiftlyreplaced by the returning Russ Eagle who returned for his third spell at the club. However, Eagle also resigned in the Summer of 2013 to take a post at WorksopParramore which led to the appointment of Steve Adams to take the Steelmen intothe 2013/14 season.
