CAMf ING AKEA GUIDEllNES Get familiar with the site and the site map. It could help to avoid getting lost (even if getting lost is the only way to find yourself again!). The Caravan Park A (Kami Caravan Park) and Camping areas are located within the Boomland, just a few minutes walk from the main music and food areas, while Caravan Parks B, C and D are inside the Boomland but a bit further. Upon arrival follow the signs for "Camping". Putting your tent anywhere outside the designated camping area is strictly prohibited. Any tents outside the camping area will be removed and turned into a beautiful recycled art installation!

f llCHING lENlS IN lHE DAKK You may not be able to find a good spot by night. Try to wait for the daylight to decide a permanent camping spot. If you decide to pitch in the dark anyway, make sure you have a bright flashlight / headlamp and respect all plants or trees, even the smallest, and the sleeping neighbours!

SOCIAl HU~S If every camping zone was a home, its Social Hub would be the living room. We're giving continuity to an idea that started back in 2016, by providing each of the 4 camping zones with comfortable communal areas, equipped with a community kitchen, activities for both kids and grown ups, and first aid points. Each Social Hub is supported by stewards, who provide 24/7 assistance, and to whom any Boomer can go seek information or help in case of emergency. We will also be providing rubbish bags to help maintain your camping zone and keep it clean. We invite all Boomers to use these spaces as their own - get to know your neighbours, help one another, keep these areas clean and safe. You

VA l U A~ l E S:_____,,........3

WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES IN THE TENT!

ENVI KONMENlAl IMfACl: lEAVE NO lKACEI • Don't waste water. It is a precious resource and we must preserve it to the best of our possibilities. • Reduce disposable non-biodegradable products in your bag. • DON'T PUT ANYTHING BUT HUMAN WASTE INSIDE THE COMPOST TOILETS. • Put wet wipes, baby diapers and the like in the provided containers. • leave the Boomland clean and more beautiful than you found it! Don't leave your rubbish behind, but only in the designated areas. leave nothing but footprints. • Separate your trash.

Note: If you can' t carry your tent, shade or any other structure back home, pack it down and bring it to the Info Stand, so that it can be reused.

NO GlASS Glass creates a high risk of injury, maximises fire risk and increases rubbish around the site. Vehicles will be searched for glass. Pour all your drinks into stainless steel water containers.

NO COOKING GAS CANISlEKS Gas Canisters present a high risk of fire and explosion. If found they will be confiscated.

~__:N~.:..:::.O_:_f. E l S A l l O \./ E D Please do not bring your cat, dog, rabbit, hamster or goat to Boom. Several Boomers were injured by dogs that were abandoned by their owners - people that mistreat pets are not welcome at Boom. Besides being a very loud place, highly unsuitable for pets, the Boom site is abundant with leishmaniasis, a disease that can kill animals! We've had very tragic events in the past and we hope you' ll understand (and your pets too). If you cannot leave your dog at home, please contact one of the nearest dog hotels: Hotel Canino Quinta da Amendoeira in Alcains I 00351 969 842 151; Quinta Alcateia I 00351 938 484 741

GUIDEllNES FOR CARAVAN fARK A

• This is a limited space: make sure your camp occupies a reasonable space and make room for your new friends! Shade structures must be smaller than 10 squared metres. • Make sure you park within the designated area, any vehicle parked outside this area will be removed and turned into a recycled art installation! • No dogs allowed. • No sound systems. • No fires . • Grey Waters: ALL THE GREY WATERS MUST BE COLLECTED IN THE

CONTAINERS PROVIDED ON THE CARAVAN PARK AND CAMPING (see the map). Please do not pour wastewater into compost toilets (it will kill the biologic composting process there posing a risk to everybody's health!) or into the lake, stream or on the ground. • Motorcycles are not allowed inside Caravan Park A and inside the festival. • The caravan park is a community space. Meet your neighbours, look after each other, be mindful of each other's possessions and keep your space clean. It is recommended you always keep your caravan locked. • NO GLASS ALLOWED: Glass creates a high risk of injury, maximise fire risk and increases rubbish around the site. Vehicles will be searched for glass. Pour all your drinks into stainless steel water containers.

Note: Caravans are not permitted to leave the Caravan Park A before the 29 of July at 10 am . We must allow people without vehicles to exit the festival first - SAFETY COMES FIRST!

GUIDEllNES FOR CARAVAN fARK ~. C AND D

• You can move your caravan during the festival. • Any vehicle parked outside the designated areas will be removed and turned into a recycled art installation! • Grey Waters: ALL THE GREY WATERS MUST BE COLLECTED IN THE CONTAINERS PROVIDED ON THE CARAVAN PARK AND CAMPING. Please do not pour waste-water into compost toilets (it will kill the biologic composting process there!) or into the lake, stream or on the ground. • DO NOT PUT ANYTHING BUT HUMAN WASTE INSIDE THE COMPOST TOILETS. This includes wet wipes, baby diapers ("nappies"), feminine hygiene products, cigarettes and the like. • The caravan park is a community space. Meet your neighbours, look after each other, be mindful of each other's possessions, keep your space clean. It is recommended you always keep your caravan locked. • No sound systems are allowed. • No fires.

GUIDEllNES FOR CAR PARK

• Respect the Boom staff and their directions. • Do not put your tent in the car park. There is a camping area inside the festival. • No dogs. • No parking in roads and forbidden areas: your car will be immediately removed if you do so. • Always lock your car. Make sure you put your car keys in a safe place or in the safe lockers by the Info Stand. It could be useful to make two copies of your car key: carry one with you and hide the other (after spending a week at Boom, have in mind that you're likely to have forgotten where you've put them!) or put it together will all your valuables (identity documents, credit cards, etc.) in the safe lockers at the Info Stand. • Check if you have any dangerous item in your car - fires are a huge risk at Boom. • Always park your vehicle in emergency exit position: with the front facing the road.

Note: You can move your car during the festival!

Of EN MIND AND EVOlUTIONARY ATTITUDE

Psychedelic culture and awareness is about opening up portals for the evolutionary impulse to flow in our daily actions, for the benefit of all sentient beings and for the creation of harmony in all our relationships. Respect the "other", the "different", may it be a plant, an animal or your neighbour! Be friendly, act with solidarity and generosity. WEARE LOVE!

· •

UNf lUG TO RECONNECT

Seize the opportunity to truly disconnect from the digital world. Go offline and enjoy the present moment. You will be more connected when you disconnect. BE HERE AND BE NOW! Tip: to discourage Boomers from using cellphones, we will have fewer charging points at the Boomland. If you need to recharge your phone, why not bring a portable solar charger?

NO NATIONAl f lAGS

Boom Festival is a global gathering, a moment in time where tribes from all around the planet can unite, let go of cultural determinism and celebrate together one positive vision for the future. Abstain from bringing national flags: WE ARE ONE!

Page 10: Boom 2018 survival guide - boomfestival.org · Sao Vicente do Campo da Beira Sobral do Campo N"nho do A~or P6voa de Rio de Moinhos I N112 I Salgueiro do Campo I N233 I PUBLIC ,rrc~~

SlEEr You may not want to miss a thing, however the experienced festival-goer will tell you that you'll enjoy the festival even more if you get at least 8 hours/day of sleep. Be aware that a proper overnight sleep is a biological need.

DKINK \./AfEK There are many drinking water taps all across the festival site: always bring a refillable container and stay hydrated. Drinking water from the taps come from the public grid and undergoes daily analysis of its quality. Water is life, please use it wisely.

EAl \./Ell There are plenty of options for food at Boom: from raw and veggie to Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean -you name it! It is mandatory for restaurants to have affordable prices and to use biodegradable dishes and cutlery. Conscious food stalls are predominant at Boom. We ask restaurants to opt for ingredients that are locally sourced and organic.

rou MIGHl \./ANl lO lKr A~ai: If you want something light and easy to eat, try the Brazilian fruit A9ai (found at the Dance Temple and Restaurants Area). It is served frozen like an icecream with muesli, full of nutrients and will give you plenty of energy for the rest of the day.

MIND lHE SUN We all love sun, however those of us with fair skin and tattoos need to be extra careful. Remember, use an eco-friendly sunscreen (and lip balm) and PROTECT YOUR SKIN BETWEEN 10AM AND 5PM. Don't fall asleep in the sun! You could burn your skin and become dangerously dehydrated. Alternative remedies for sun protection include Belladonna 30c, a homeopathic remedy that can help with dry, red-hot, throbbing skin or sunstroke.

KEJfECl lHE lOCAlJ Life outside of Boomland moves at a slow pace. The local population is elderly and many of them speak portuguese only. Please be mindful and respectful of the locals when you are travelling in the area. Having a good relationship with the locals is fundamental for the experience of the festival.

ENJOY lHE lAK El Swimming in the Boom lake is one of the best things you can do during the hot Boom days! Forgot your bikini? Strip off and dive in! Swimming naked, or skinny dipping, is allowed and encouraged! But be careful, there can be strong currents in the lake, do not swim out too far! And be mindful: do not piss or shit in the lake! Use the compost toilets and contribute to producing soil for a more fertile Earth! Note: The lake water quality is monitored on a daily basis by legal institutions, but it is not drinking water! NO PISS, NO SHIT & NO SOAP/SHAMPOO IN THE LAKE.

lAKE CAKE Of OlHEKJ Be kind and generous with other Boomers and look out for those who may need help: whether they are lost, sleeping under the sun, in need of medical attention or having a difficult experience (see Kosmicare info on this guide).

DON'l rARll HARD lOO EARll Boom is a weeklong experience, you have plenty of time to have fun and celebrate. Don't peak too early, enjoy the middle way and never surpass your limits. Respect yourself and those around you: act consciously!

lHEfl In any large gathering theft can happen anytime, anywhere. Be mindful of your belongings, keep them safe and look out for each other. Never leave valuables in your tent. Read below for more details. Report any suspicious activity at the Info Stand or to any other staff member.

KEErlNG YOUR VAlUA~lES SAFE • Lockers: If you have valuables such as documents, bank cards, cameras or other electronic equipment that you would like to keep safe, leave them in the Info Stand (Central Plaza). • Use a waist-bag, where you can keep other belongings and ID. • Get familiar with your neighbours and members of the stewards team that patrol the area.

FIKE MEN Firemen are present on the·site 24/7 during the event, check Boomland Map for location.

SCOKf IONS There are no lethal scorpions on site, though a smaller type of scorpion (known in Portuguese as lacrau) can show up in this region. The sting can be quite painful, at least for the first few hours. Seek immediate medical attention to prevent swelling and further pain (see below our note on the Boom Medical Service). Be careful when moving stones and rocks as these are the places where they like to hide. Also make a habit of checking the inside of your shoes before putting them on, especially at night. They are a gentle species so please respect them!

HAKMFUl ~AClEKIA The hot climate and the presence of people from all over the world can make the perfect environment for these organisms to thrive! To minimise the risk of bacteria please wash your hands regularly with soap, especially after using the toilets and before eating (use water taps provided with soap near all toilets). Drink plenty of water and stay in the shade. It is also important that you don't shit or piss outside the toilets, as this might contribute to the spreading of bacteria!

EAR rlUGS Loud music can be harmful for your ears! Even if the sound systems we use at Boom are of the highest quality, we recommend that when you are on the dance floors you use ear plugs. Overexposure to high decibels can create long term damage!

~QOM MEDICAl SEKVICE The Boom Medical Team has over 20 years experience in festivals. The Boom Hospital (BMS) is open 24h primarily for emergencies. Examples of emergencies are: dehydration, sunstroke, serious stomach problems, wounds and lacerations, painful or swollen insect bites, or any other serious health issue you might experience. Remember that the best cure is always prevention! If you follow the guidelines contained in this booklet you will avoid finding yourself in need of medical service!

Con sidering the high temperature a n d the dryness of the terrain, THERE IS A VERY HIGH RISK OF FIRE ON THE BOOMLAND, so the following rules are to be carefully respected by every single Boomer.

• BBQs, camp fires, camping stoves are not allowed anywhere outside the community kitchen at the camping area. There are four community kitchens in the camping area, built for this purpose.

• Candles, burning incense and any similar fire device are strictly prohibited all across the Boomland and its surroundings (including Ca ra van Park B). If you need contact with fire, remember that at Sacred Fire a big flame is always burning, so please opt to go there!

• Know where the fire extinguishers are!

• If you see anyone disrespecting these rules, p lease gently try to convince him/her to extinguish the fire and if that is not complied, seek assistan ce from security or firemen (check map for Firemen - Bombeiros -location).

If you need contact with fire, remember that the Boom sacred fire is always burning by the lake, in front of the Chill Out Gardens. Please opt to go there!

A SAFE rlA(E FOR DIFF l(Ull EXrERIENCES

"Those of us who work with Kosmicare believe that the world is a shared community responsibility, where we must look out for and take care of each member, just like in a tribal setting. We believe the well being of each individual is vital to the well being of the whole. · (Kosmicare Team member).

Substances are not legal in Portugal, although due to the Portuguese decriminalisation laws, projects for risk minimisation (such as Kosmicare) are allowed. Kosmicare is a pioneer project that started at Boom in 2002.

The Kosmicare was born at Boom in 2002, from the collaborative work between the festival and several entities such as the Faculty of Education and Psychology (Catholic University of Portugal at Porto) and the Portuguese Authority for Drugs Issues - SICAD, or Maps.

The Kosmicare promotes a number of interventions at the festival that include:

- Advice on substance use risk reduction practices through information, material distribution, peer work, etc. (Dance Temple); - Drug Testing for public health and prevention (Dance Temple); - Support in case of challenging experiences (Camping, next to Boom Medical Services and Boom Bus Station).

At the crisis intervention hub you can find a team of multilingual and multi-skilled professionals and volunteers, including psychologists, therapists and psychotherapists from various holistic and conventional orientations, mental health professionals, psychiatrists, nurses, homeopaths and fellow Boomers. All of them are ready to assist you in case a difficult experience emerges, whether it is associated with drug use or not.

The Kosmicare crisis intervention hub works closely with the Boom Medical Services, and other relevant services operating inside and outside the festival.

DRUG lESll NG

The drug checking hub is offered through a special permit issued by the Portuguese authorities (SICAD). You can benefit from feedback concerning the illicit substances you are planning to use in a totally safe and anonymous way. Drug checking is a very useful strategy for minimising the risks and negative impact associated with the use of unknown uncontrolled substances. Given that in most events across the world substance use is common and highly prevalent, at Boom we take responsibility and take care of the Boomers by providing top innovative services such as these.

Find the drugs in fo stand and drug checking services close to th e Dance Temple. Respect your mind and your body, stay safe!

srECIAl NEEDS Boom is everybody 's home and for this reason everybody is welcome. We support diversity and inclusivity as key aspects of our gathering - WE ARE ONE.

Who qualifies as a Special Needs Boomers? Boomers with reduced mobility, Elder Dragons, and Boomers living with a medical condition. To guarantee people with special needs (with or without helpers) a Boom experience that is as close as possible to that of any other boomer, we provide:

• A camping area with adapted showers and toilets; • Private toilets next to some of the main areas. • Private parking to facilitate access. Please respect the instructions given by the Car Park team. • For info please email to: [email protected]

srECIAl NEEDS lOllElS Adapted toilets are for Boomers with reduced mobility who are unable to use the regular toilets. If you are not a Special Needs Boomer, please do not use Special Needs toilets. In case of overuse they will have to be closed - be conscious and respectful of these rules, as they aim to provide a more comfortable experience for those who need it!

INClUSIVE SHUlllE The inclusive shuttle helps boomers move from the camping areas all the way to the artistic areas. This service is meant for all Special Needs boomers, pregnant boomers, Elder Dragons, and boomers carrying children in their arms. This transport only operates during the day.

COMMUNlll KllCHEN The community kitchen is a special place for Boomers to show off their culinary skills! The kitchen is the heart of the home so here it's certainly the glue that binds the community. Community kitchens are found within the camping areas and where boomers will find facilities to cook their own tasty meals. It's also a place where people from 147 countries can share the cooking fire, prepare food together, interact and connect like one big family, as we originally are. When you are using the kitchens, please use biodegradable soap to wash your plates. And please do not put fats or cooking oils in the sink! Remember Boomland is a high risk area for fires, which is the reason why we provide community kitchens where you can cook safely. Enjoy cooking at Boom!

CAMrlNG For an amazing experience, make sure to meet your neighbours and create a safe space for everyone to enjoy. Respect nature, avoid using plastic and use the proper containers for trash: separate all waste, specially medical materials.

~I KE VlllAGE Boom by Bike started in 2008 with 2 Boomers cycling to the festival from Belgium. Boom 2018 will be once again home to an ever-growing community of bikes and bikers. If your bike needs repairing, you're welcome to bring it over at the Bike Village (Grid Reference: MS on the map). Bikes are a great way to move around at the Boomland - please always park them on the bike racks and use the main roads at all times. CHllDREN Al ~OOM Children are welcome at Boom! They are the future boomers and we want to make sure that they have a great memory of their times at Boom as children! If you bring your children make sure you find a quiet, shaded area to camp (extra covers to create shadow might be helpful). During the day you can bring your children (from 3 to 12 years old) to the Young Dragons area (check map for location), fully equipped with a dedicated staff of professionals and a relaxed, fun, shady, safe environment. There will also be kids activities at the Social Hubs in the Camping and Caravan Park. For safety reasons, please make sure your kids have been registered! Note: Considering the high temperatures, loud noise and dusty air, we highly recommend parents not to bring children below 3 years of age!

The region around Boom is one of the most remote and well preserved areas in Southern Europe, with ancient culture and natural wonders. A place where history seems to have its own rhythm and where tradition intermingles with nature. It's no surprise that this territory is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks.

NATUKAl HERITAGE

Vast landscapes that change colour through the seasons, breathtaking natural scenery populated by an extremely diverse fauna: deer, foxes, hares, snakes, wolves and several species of rare birds; and the flora comprising plants like jasmine, olives, cork-oaks, pine trees, oaks and wild roses just to name a few. Boom is located in the Geopark Naturtejo, part of the Global Network of National Geoparks created by UNESCO and a place where geological heritage is connected to broader aspects of the natural and cultural environment, which are often determined by geology and landscape. www.naturtejo.com

IDANHA-A-NOVA:fHE NEARESf fO\,/N

It's the nearest town to Boom Festival (18 km) where all basic commodities are available (ATM, supermarket, shops, etc.). It's difficult to pinpoint its origins but it's assumed that the construction of the castle in 1187 by the Templar Knights is a landmark. Presently, in this region the ancient and the contemporary live in harmony.

ldanha-a-Velha is an amazingly beautiful tiny village just a couple of km from the Boomland. It is considered one of the oldest villages in Portugal (about 2000 years old) where lusitanos, Romans, Moors, Celts, Visigoths and Templar Knights have all left a trace of their presence: the cathedral with the biggest collection of Roman inscriptions of the Iberian peninsula, the ruins of the ancient walls, the tower of the Templars and the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Venus are the backdrop to the simple life of the small Portuguese population living here.

MONSANTO: THE MUST-SEE

If you have the chance to visit only one place outside of Boom, make sure this is Monsanto! Nestled on top of an ancient volcano, towering over the whole region (it is the mountain that can be seen even from Boomland),

this village will surprise even the most experienced traveler! The characteristic round giant stones have, since the Paleolithic offered shelter to members of the local population, who have devised the most surprising ways to build houses around them! And a walk to the fortress on the top of the mountain at sunset will be just as unforgettable as a night on the dance floor ... Monsanto is a mystic world unto itself, and some say it is the closest to being in Hampi (India) you'll ever get in Europe ...

fENHA GARCIA: fHE fKllO~lfES fO\,JN

Penha Garcia (30 km from Boom) is impressive for the majesty of its position towering over a breathtaking valley famous for the rich presence of 480 million year old trilobites fossils. Penha Garcia was an ancient fortress and from the top of the town you can observe the valley with the river Ponsul, its ancient mills (also visitable), waterfalls and a very fresh natural swimming pool (a must-see!)

We believe in going offline to be in the present moment.

Smartphones are making digital androids of us all. The irony is not lost when a device designed to connect us serves to put life on mute and widen the space between us.

Boom is an opportunity to detox from this digital frenzy and liberate us from the void created by the distraction of staring at our screens when so much is happening around us.

So this year, there's no Boom app as we unplug to defy the dominance of smartphone supremacy and reclaim our re-connection to nature, to our daily life and to each other.

There's a detachable programme in the Dharma Dragon to help you plan if you need to. But remember, the best plan is no plan. Keep an open mind, dive spontaneously into the Boom multiverse of endless possibilities, and go with the perpetual flow!

Celebrate love and life, HERE AND NOW.
