Transcultural Nursing Theory and Models: Ap- plication in Nursing Education, Practice, and Ad- ministration by Priscilla Sagar is a distinctive book that blends the historical context of tran- scultural nursing with the current application of transcultural theory and models. Leininger’s Culture Care theory, the models of Purnell, Campinha-Bacote, Giger and Davidhizar, and Andrews and Boyle’s assessment guide are ap- plied to the areas of nursing education, practice and nursing administration. This book makes a worthwhile contribution to the field of transcul- tural nursing by complementing texts that intro- duce theory and models (Andrews & Boyle, 2012) or delve into them individually and more deeply (Andrews & Boyle, 2012, Campinha-Ba- cote, 2005; Giger, 2012; Leininger & McFarland, 2006; Purnell & Paulanka, 2008). Sagar con- tributes her expertise as a Transcultural Nursing Scholar by focusing on how to use the models and guide. She explains and shows the reader how transcultural nursing theory can be dissem- inated and implemented. ucation, practice and administration. As an ex-ample, Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Di-versity and Universality is applied in academiawith a sample role play scenario of the three ac-tion modes of preservation, accommodation, and repatterning. The scenario offers a way forstudents to comprehend the theory through crit-ical thinking, debriefing and reflection. The in-corporation of Purnell’s Model of CulturalCompetence into didactic and clinical nursingcourses is demonstrated with an assignment thatutilizes the 12 domains of culture in nursing as-sessment. Campinha-Bacote’s Model of theProcess of Cultural Competence in the Deliveryof Healthcare Services is put into practice in asample workshop module that guides nursesthrough the steps of cultural awareness, culturalknowledge, cultural encounter, cultural skill, and cultural desire. Giger and Davidhizar’sTranscultural Assessment Model is applied tonursing practice with a case scenario to helpnurses utilize language access services. Spector’sHealth Traditions Model is implemented innursing administration with a plan to orient newnurses with a survey on communication, socialorganizations, health maintenance, health pro-tection, and health restoration. Finally, compo-nents of the Andrews/Boyle NursingAssessment Guide are evident in a case scenarioshowing how nurse administrators can supportnursing staff to address the cultural needs of pa-tients.

Each chapter concludes with fifteen NCLEX-type questions. These questions can be used bythe reader to appraise their recall and under-standing of the content as well as providing pro-totypes of test questions for transculturalnursing education.

Endorsements by Madeleine Leininger andMarge Andrews support the credibility ofSagar’s presentation of transcultural nursing.Emerging new models and trends in transcul-

tural nursing education, practice and adminis-tration are energetically discussed. The reality ofgrowing cultural diversity and widespreadhealth disparities in healthcare are addressed asSagar calls for nurses to become cultural ac-tivists.

The timeliness of this book is emphasized bya closing poem which is a fitting tribute to Dr.Leininger who recently passed away. In thepoem, Sagar depicts culture care and transcul-tural nursing as the movement of waterthroughout the “villages of the world” (p. 161).
