What are two things we can't live without? Food anddrink, right? Some people might add money to that list, but you can live without money. Some people mightalso say love. But what if your love life isn't all youwant it to be? Believe it or not, the first two thingsmentioned-food and drink-can possibly help enhanceintimacy.

At its core, intimacy is a form of exercise. To get themost out of any exercise, you need energy. Assumingyou're in reasonably good health, the best way to getenergy is through a sensible diet. To ensure a sensiblediet, stay away from fatty foods, eat lots of fresh fruitsand vegetables, get your share of lean protein and enjoysome dairy and whole grain products. You might alsowant to incorporate the following foods into your diet.

Bananas: Bananas have something called bufote-nine, which is said to improve mood, self-confidenceand sex drive. Bananas are also teeming with B vita-mins, which help in the development of sex hormones.

Chicken: Chicken is loaded with zinc and B6,which help produce testosterone.

Chocolate: Most people like chicken and bananas, but you'd have to search far and wide to find anybodywho doesn't like chocolate. The phytochemicals inchocolate enhance the flow of blood to all parts of thebody. Chocolate also contains theobromine, similar tocaffeine, which can help get your motor running andantioxidants, which help boost your immune system.

Chili: The spice to spicy foods comes from cap-saicin, which releases endorphins. High levels of endor-phins elevate sensation.

Fish: Salmon and oysters are also winners for poten-tially improving your love life. Salmon is high inomega-3 fatty acids to make your nervous system func-tion better and oysters are loaded with zinc, whichhelps produce testosterone.

Soy: Soy is said to fight the symptoms ofmenopause. Women with a history of breast cancershould not eat large amounts of soy, however, as doingso can risk recurrence.

Liver: Remember how you'd always ask Mom forsecond and third helpings of liver when you were grow-ing up? You don't remember that? Well, now's yourchance to make up for all those helpings you missed.Liver has glutamine, which boosts your immune systemand desire.

A diet where you can drink upYou may not know how to spell it, but the

Mediterranean Diet has gained popularity over the years.Part of the reason for its success is likely due to the factyou can enjoy a glass or two of wine with it, so even ifyou're not losing weight, you'll likely be too happy toknow the difference.

The Mediterranean Diet has its origins around 1993.With the number of countries in the Mediterranean basincomes a number of different variations on this plan. Ithas been known to help you shed pounds and add yearsto your life in some cases.

Here are the basic ingredients: Olive oil (as opposedto butter and margarine); Lots of fruits, vegetables, breadand other cereals, legumes, nuts and seeds; Fish andpoultry; A daily consumption of dairy products; Littlered meat; Wine in moderate amounts

Olive oil is the centerpiece of the Mediterranean Dietand no less an authority than Hippocrates, the father ofmedicine, touted its use. Olive oil is a monounsaturatedfat that helps keep your arteries healthy. The use of oliveoil can lower LDL cholesterol, which could lead to areduction in coronary heart disease risk. People living inMediterranean countries have lower rates of cardiovascu-lar disease than people in the United States when similarlevels of fat consumption are compared. Bottom line:The change to olive oil will be better for you and alsoreduce the calories in your diet.

Fresh fruits, vegetables and grains are a staple inmany diets and the Mediterranean edition is no different. Many people in the Mediterranean region eat a pound ofvegetables on a daily basis. When eating grains, choosethe whole variety. Cut out refined white bread. Wholegrains and cereals are high in fiber and keep your diges-tive system functioning like it's supposed to.

Eat fish. Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids. These aregood for your heart. Think about it: When was the lasttime you saw a fish die of a heart attack? Omega-3 fattyacids are also good for your brain. Think about it again:When you throw food in your fish tank, the fish knowexactly what to do. Conclusion-fish are smart. Nobodywants to have a heart attack and everybody wants to besmarter so eat your fish. Fish is low in fat and calories, and it's a good source of protein. When cooking yourfish, you're discouraged from deep frying it in theMediterranean Diet (or in your skillet). Baking or broil-ing is the way to go. Eggs are a recommended source ofprotein in this diet and can be eaten four times a week.

Daily downing of dairy is dandy in the Mediterranean

Diet. Milk consumption should be confined to the low-fat or skim variety. Low- and non-fat cheese and yogurtare also recommended.

The Mediterranean Diet doesn't say better dead thanred, but you still need to limit your consumption of redmeat. The amount of saturated fat in red meat more thanoffsets any gains you might be getting from your use ofolive oil. Indulge in red meat about once a month. Yourheart will thank you.

Now for the good part. A glass or two of red wine isencouraged in the Mediterranean Diet (as long as you'renot pregnant, under age or a designated driver). The dietalso recommends six glasses of water every day.

Walk to a better youYour time on the couch in front of the TV has come

to an end, and you're ready to get fit. How you go aboutthis journey is up to you. You could take a martial artsclass, you could take up running, you could swim at thelocal pool, you could enroll in a dance class or you couldsimply walk. That's right. Walking half an hour on mostdays of the week will help you get into shape and stayhealthy, and unlike some other disciplines, walking iseasy and requires little in the way of equipment.Interested in walking your way to a better you? Read on!

Before you get started, you need to take an assess-ment of your health. Do you have some health issues? Ifso, you should make an appointment with your physicianto ensure you are healthy enough to start a fitness walk-ing program. The same goes if you are over the age of65.

Next, you need to gather the right equipment.Walking doesn't require much, just some comfortableclothes and a good pair of walking shoes. You will wantshoes in good condition that fit well. You may also wantto purchase a water bottle to carry with you on longerstretches. This will ensure you don't get dehydrated.

You also need to consider where you will be walking.Clearly you will want somewhere safe, such as a nearbypark, gym or track. You can also walk in your neighbor-hood or on a local trail. If possible, try to find a buddy. There is safety in numbers, and having someone to walkwith will keep you motivated.

When you are ready to begin, go slowly. Always takethe time to warm up and cool down to prevent injury.Once you have warmed up with some stretches, go for abrisk 10-minute walk. Do this every day for a week, andthen tack on another five minutes onto your walks the

While you are walking, pay attention to your stature. Are you standing up straight? Are your shoulders relaxedand your head held high? Are your abdominal musclestight? When done right, walking can improve posture andslim the waistline.

As you build your strength and stamina, you can pickup the pace and go for longer stretches at a time. If youare looking to shed some pounds, you will want to walkbriskly for 45 to 60 minutes five days a week. Of course, keeping up the program could turn out to be the hardestpart. Look to your walking buddy for support and justthink of how good you'll look and feel within a fewmonths!

Organic ... It may notmean what you think

They say, "You are what you eat." With that in mind, the rush to eating organic foods in the United States hasbeen unparalleled in recent times. Consider some of thesefigures:

•More than half of Americans buy organic food occa-sionally, and nearly one quarter buy it every week.

•In the United States, retail sales from organic foodwere estimated at more than $20 billion in 2007.

•Worldwide, retail sales from organic food climbedfrom $23 billion in 2002 to $52 billion in 2008.

•More than 70% of the nation's grocery stores nowcarry at least some organic food.

•Americans spend as much as 50% more on organicfood than the non-organic variety.

And there's the rub. If you spend $800 a month feed-ing your family of four regular honest-to-goodness made-in-the-USA good ol' processed food, you have to askyourself if you can afford to spend $1,200 on the organicvariety. Maybe you've decided you can. You've concludedyour family is worth it, and the organic route is the roadyou've chosen-even if you have to live in your car. Nowyou need to ask another question: What makes organicfood organic? The answers might surprise you.

There are basically three organic categories certifiedby the U.S. Department of Agriculture:

•100% organic. Not surprising, foods that say "100%organic" on their labels are completely organic or madeof all organic ingredients. These will carry the familiargreen and white "USDA Organic" seal.

•Organic. If it says "organic" on the label, these foodsare at least 95% organic. These, too, will carry the"USDA Organic" seal.

•Made with organic ingredients. Labels "boasting"these four words can contain 30% of ingredients that arenot organic. The USDA has decided the organic seal can'tbe used on these packages and the word "organic" can'tappear on their labels.

Don't be fooled by other "organic-sounding" names onlabels. If you see "hormone free," "free range" or "all nat-ural," what's in the food still isn't organic according to theUSDA. Also be aware the USDA has stated there's noreal evidence that organic food is more nutritious than thenon-organic variety.

So, why do you have to pay 50% more to eat organi-cally if organic foods are sometimes not 100% organicand they're not necessarily better for you? Well, it costsmore to farm organically. Conventional farming methodsinclude spraying chemical fertilizers for growth, sprayinginsecticides for death (of pests and diseases) and sprayingchemical herbicides to contain weeds. Organic farmingmethods use natural fertilizers for growth; birds, insectsand traps for death; and tilling, mulching and hand weed-ing to contain weeds. All that costs money and takestime. It's no wonder there are fewer organic farmers thanthose using conventional methods. That means there's alot fewer organic ears of corn, heads of lettuce, etc., andthat means higher prices for the organic consumer. And,as the demand for organic increases among a morehealth-conscious society, the price goes up.

Can it be extra protein? The scariest read in the literary world these days isn't

the latest Stephen King offering. Instead, it's a title by amuch more sinister entity. The frightful reading is a pub-lication called the Defect Levels Handbook, which is putout by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an arm of theFood and Drug Administration.

It's in here you'll find out about all kinds of extra"ingredients" in your food that may make it easier to stayon that diet or make you want to stop eating altogether.Let's take a look at some of these goodies you'll neverfind in the ingredients list on a box or can. Hopefully, your stomach is empty; if it's not, it soon may be.

•Asparagus (canned or frozen) can contain an averageof 40 or more thrips (little insects) per 100 grams.

• Broccoli (frozen) can have an average of 60 or moreaphids and/or thrips and/or mites (more little insects) per100 grams.

•Chocolate can average 60 or more insect fragmentsAND one or more rodent hairs per 100 grams. Now thisis hitting below the belt. We can all get by withoutasparagus and broccoli, but chocolate? C'mon.

•Citrus juices (canned) can have five or more fly eggs

or one or more maggots per eight ounces. And here youthought drinks were safe. Silly you.

•Macaroni and noodle products can have an averageof 225 insect fragments and 4.5 rodent hairs per 225grams. (We're wondering who checks for the split hairs. It's probably the FDA's crack "technical and regulatoryexperts in filth and extraneous materials." And you thinkwe're kidding.)

•Mushrooms can have an average of over 20 or moremaggots of any size per 15 grams. (That's the dried vari-ety of mushrooms. If you eat the canned version, it takes100 grams before the 20-maggot threshold can bereached. Unfortunately, they can still be any size. Howbig can a maggot get? How badly do you want to know?)

•Potato chips can have "rot" in an average of six per-cent of your bag. And what is "rot," according to theUSDA? It's "plant tissue that is visibly decomposed, usu-ally discolored with disagreeable odors and taste. Theplant tissue has been invaded and is being digested bymicroorganisms." When we're talking food, the generalpopulace doesn't like to hear the three Ds-"decomposed,""discolored" and "disagreeable." Makes us say,"Disgusting!" Bottom line? Get the small bag of chips or,better yet, no bag at all. That's more for your friend themicroorganism.

•"Prunes, pitted," is actually an oxymoron. Two per-cent-or more-of prunes, pitted, may have whole pits or pitfragments. Your government warns said pits could cause"mouth or tooth injury." Gee, thanks.

•Raisins (golden) can have 10 or more whole orequivalent insects and 35 fly eggs per eight ounces. What's a "whole or equivalent insect"? Glad you asked.According to the USDA, it's "a whole insect, separatehead, or body portions with head attached."

• Tomatoes (canned) can have an average of 10 ormore fly eggs per 500 grams. If you have to ask abouttomato juice, don't. That also goes for tomato paste. Thatpizza you were going to have tonight? How about sometofu instead?

By now you might be asking yourself, "Well, howmuch is 500 grams?" Well, not much. A 14.5 ounce canof tomatoes is 411 grams. That's potentially eight fly eggsyou get at no extra charge. Kind of makes you happythey don't round up to the next ounce, doesn't it? A 16ounce jar of peanut butter is 454 grams or, for those ofyou scoring at home, 135 insect fragments. It's saidAmericans eat 700 million pounds of peanut butter ayear, which includes more than 50 billion rodent hairs. Conclusion: There must be a lot of bald rodents out there.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

During this election season, it mightbe good to keep in mind the followingsage observation, made beloved humoristWill Rogers: "The American people aregenerous and will forgive almost anyweakness with the exception of stupidi-ty."

If you've ever been to London - or ifyou've seen a movie that was set there -you might remember the iconic blacktaxicabs that are ubiquitous in that city;the high roofs set them apart from othervehicles on the streets. The headroomoffered did once serve a purpose. Whenthe cars were originally designed, tophats were still de rigueur for a properlydressed gentleman, and the high roofsallowed a man so attired to enter andleave the vehicle without knocking off hishat.

Healthy habits for healthy kidsBy Angela Shelf Medearis

Childhood obesity is now a big con-cern following the launch of the Let'sMove campaign by first lady MichelleObama. During the past 30 years, obesityrates among children have tripled, and theCenters for Disease Control andPrevention indicates we have reached thepoint where one in three American chil-dren are overweight or obese. Not only isthe problem costly -- an estimated $150billion a year is spent on obesity-relatedhealth care costs -- but childhood obesityreduces quality of life.

Obese children are at a much greaterrisk for chronic illnesses like heart dis-ease, diabetes and asthma. Researchreported in the Journal of the AmericanMedical Association indicates that from1988 to 1994, about 11 percent of chil-dren in the U.S. had chronic diseases. This rate has increased to 25 percent inthe period from 2000 to 2006. Data sug-gests that obesity may shorten the lives ofchildren today by two to five years com-pared to their parents.

Lynda Johnson, nutrition and healtheducation specialist with the Universityof Missouri Extension, believes that muchof the weight gain and chronic healthproblems among children could be pre-vented with increased physical activityand improved nutrition. There are manyguidelines to help children develophealthy eating habits and maintain ahealthy weight, but parents may feeloverwhelmed on how to begin. Johnsonsuggests starting with these simplechanges:

--Serve kid-friendly portions. Withtoday's larger plates, it's easy for childrento get into the habit of eating portionsthat are way too large. Studies findpreschoolers eat more when large serv-ings are on their plate.

--Limit sugar-sweetened beverages, and drink more water. Children can con-sume too many extra calories from soda,

sweet tea and fruit drinks. Drinking a 12-ounce can of soda each day could lead to10 extra pounds in a year. Serve thesesugary drinks as occasional treats, ratherthan every day.

--To boost nutrition and reduce calo-ries, fill half your plate and your child'splate with a rainbow of colorful vegeta-bles. Ideas for adding more vegetables toyour diet can be found online athttp://www.fruitsandveggiesmoremat-ters.org/.

The Let's Move campaign also encour-ages physical activity to help balancecalories. Children should participate in atleast 60 minutes of active play most daysof the week. It's also important to helpchildren avoid too much sedentary timewith the TV or computer. The websiteBam! Body and Mind provides creativeideas to help children have fun, stayactive and be healthy.

There are lots of easy and nutritioussnacks for kids that are delicious and funto make and eat, no matter what age weare. Kids that are involved in makingtheir snacks, or growing or selecting theirsnacks are more likely to want to eatthem. Here are some easy snacks for chil-dren that include a variety of veggies andmilk. Be sure to have your children washtheir hands with soap and warm water, scrubbing for 20 seconds (about as longas it takes to sing the ABC's), before han-dling or eating food.

Make a family of readers in 2012By Donna Erickson

When I go to a friend's house, I'm always scout-ing out the bookshelves or poking through piles ofreading material on the coffee table or kitchen count-er. It's not that I'm that nosy, but I've discovered thatI get to know my friends a little better when I seewhat they enjoy reading.

What makes for a good book, newspaper or maga-zine, anyway? Each can be the promise of adventure, another point of view, a giggle, an alternative way ofthinking.

I especially love books that grab both myself andthe child I'm reading with. If you popped by myhouse right now, you would find the striking, newlyreleased "Puff, the Magic Dragon Pop-Up Book"(Sterling Children's Books) on my end table. Paperengineer Bruce Foster animates the timeless lyricspage by page with amazing creativity. And when Ijoyfully share it with a child, I play the accompany-ing CD sung by Peter Yarrow of the familiar songI've known since childhood as we turn the pages andtravel with Jackie Paper and Puff to the land ofHonalee.

Surely reading good books can enrich us all, nomatter our age. But the extra benefits to kids gobeyond the printed page. Watch children with a newbook as they turn pages with anticipation and scanfor things that surprise and intrigue them. DianeLemke, an elementary principal and curriculumdirector, believes that reading is the river that runsthroughout education and, ultimately, life.

"The innately tactile nature of children is reward-ed by practice interacting with covers and pages,eye-catching colors, pictures and letters in all shapesand sizes," she says. "Books are like packages withinteresting contents of patterns and sounds. Whenpositive adult touch is paired with book time, a mes-

sage is translated about the specialness of writtenwords."

As you turn the calendar to 2012, and you feelfrom time to time you aren't offering your children orgrandkids enough food for thought or possibilitiesfor learning, crack open a book together. Discoverhow books can unlock a world of thinking and learn-ing in an enriched year of family reading and story-telling.

Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day"is airing on public television nationwide. To find more ofher creative family recipes and activities, visit www.don-nasday.com and link to the NEW Donna's Day Facebookfan page. Her latest book is "Donna Erickson's FabulousFunstuff for Families."

A few helpful household tips for you to try•There's a reason most refrigerators have more

than one crisper drawer. Some items need to bestored separately. For example, keep apples and car-rots in different compartments. The apples give off agas that can give the carrots a bitter taste.

•Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an appleto prevent browning.

•Mix some salt with a little bit of water and rubthe mixture over your hands for a few minutes to get

rid of the smell of garlic or onions from cooking.Rinse under cold water.

• I usually keep a small blanket in the car forspontaneous picnics with the kids in the spring andsummer.

Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, c/o King FeaturesWeekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
