COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 2 FRIDAY JANUARY 13, 2012 By Janet Drucker anish silversmith Georg Jensen (1866-1935) was one of the most talent- ed, original and influential sil- versmiths of the twentieth cen- tury. Antiques dealer, collec- tor, and author Janet Drucker has been in love with Jensen silver for over 30 years. Her two seminal books on the subject, “Georg Jensen, 20th Century Designs” and “Georg Jensen: A Tradition of Splendid Silver,” were both published by Schiffer. In the latter title, Drucker presents the story of Jensen’s life and the com- pany he founded in rich detail, with hundreds of images of pieces designed and produced by his company over the decades. (Following is an excerpt from the latter title.) On December 27, Janet Drucker gave a special talk at an open house preview of the New Year’s Day sale at Stephenson’s Auction. Her presentation focused on Jensen flatware and the classic “Acorn” pattern - a pattern represented in the auction. See high- lights of the sale on page 5 of this issue. My love affair with Georg Jensen silver developed from a search for beautiful yet affordable jewelry. Years ago when I began to deal in antique jewelry, diamonds and gold were out of the question. Not only were they too costly, they didn’t appeal to me aestheti- cally. Then I found my first piece of Georg Jensen silver. I knew immediately there was something magical about it, and to my fur- ther delight, I discovered I could afford to buy it. The memory of finding that first piece of Georg Jensen silver is indelible. It was brooch no. 100B, sometimes referred to as the tulip pin. I want- ed to know such things as: who designed the piece, how many examples were produced, what different stones were used, and how one design related to oth- ers within the Jensen canon. I began searching for answers in books, compa- ny catalogs, exhibition records, muse- um collections, and anywhere else I could find information. With each answered question, I gradually learned more not only about Jensen silver, but also about the fascinating man Georg Jensen - artist, sculptor, designer, silver- smith, businessman, and family man. Simultaneously, my involvement with other Jensen silver products grew as well. Though I initially bought and sold only Jensen jewelry, I soon found I could not stop there. I began to deal in Jensen flatware and serving pieces as well. Customers asked for other specific items, and I went out to find them. Before long, I was handling almost anything with the Jensen hallmark. What began as an attraction to Jensen’s “wearable and affordable art” jewelry grew to encompass virtually the totality of his work and the work of the designers employed by the firm he founded. In Denmark and other European countries, a goldsmith is one who makes jewelry, a silversmith is one who raises silver to make hol- lowware, and a cutler is one who makes flatware. For the purpose of definition, hollowware refers to bowls, vases, desk implements, etc., anything that is not flatware. In the United States, jewelers make gold as well as silver jewelry. Georg Jensen is referred to as a silversmith in this text, although we know he made flat- ware, hol- lowware, and gold jewelry as well. Jensen referred to himself as a sil- versmith sculptor. Characteristics of The Jensen Style By 1904, Georg Jensen’s artistic vision seems to have crystal- lized into a unique style. While it continued to evolve in subtle ways throughout the rest of his life, his style exhibited a num- ber of characteristics features, most of which consistently appear in his jewelry. An especially prominent feature is the use of vines, leaves, flowers, buds, and berries. Jensen’s interpreta- tion of the vitality and motion of Art Nouveau is shown, not through the “whiplash” line favored by French artists, but through his own lyrical winding vines and leaves. Jensen imbues the graceful lines and silhouettes of fruit- like forms with his sculptur- al technique and silver- smith’s loving care for detail. With respect to composition, Jensen’s jewelry is characterized by a superb integration of all design elements - lines, shapes, proportion, color and texture - translated into Jensen’s motifs and ornaments that result in a harmonious whole, a consummate whole. There is not a detail that could be added and there is nothing to be taken away to make each piece more perfect. Jensen’s style is also character- ized by the use of a large number of motifs, some that are interpreta- tions of natural forms and others that appear to be decorative. The diversity of ways a motif is used in a medley of combinations is another Jensen characteristic. Another distinguishing feature of Jensen’s jewelry is a highly sculptural quali- ty, attributable, of course, to Jensen’s training as a sculptor. He was able to transform the silver from a hard sub- stance into a soft, pliable-looking material that begs to be touched. The Materials In Jensen Jewelry Jensen chose his stones, some opaque and some transpar- ent, to represent a varied and excit- ing palette of col- ors. Most fre- quently he used onyx, carnelian, labradorite, amber, opal, coral, and moonstone. Although these stones were not precious and costly, their mounting - a silver bezel, beading, and sometimes leaves the couched t h e stone - w a s done w i t h superb craftsmanship. Hollowware The Hollowware that Georg Jensen pro- duced earned him international recogni- tion during his life- time. By prevailing artistic standards, a sil- versmith’s elevation to the highest ranks within the profession could be determined by the quality of his hollowware, generally considered one of the zeniths of the silversmith’s art. Georg Jensen’s commitment to hollowware is evidenced by the large number of hollowware pieces he designed and produced during his career. Although his uniquely complementary skills as a sculptor, ceramist, and silversmith are dis- cernible in all his work, they are perhaps expressed most fully and exuberantly in his hollowware. Literally, and figuratively, hol- lowware embodied his grandest artistic statements. And these were the statements that were primarily responsible for the accolades he received and the reputation he gained as one of the very best sil- versmiths of his era. Flatware Georg Jensen thought of din- ing as a sacred ritual through which family members could share nourishment and renew bonds. For him, the table was symbol of home and family, and he believed that beautiful flat- ware could enhance people’s lives by making dining a more pleasurable experience. Therefore, he designed flatware for everyday use that was func- tional and aesthetically pleasing. Many of Jensen’s flatware designs were inspired by natural forms: flowers that resemble lilies trace handles, entwined fish form handles of fish-serving implements, a blossom with berries forms the ends of serving spoons, and leaves are engraved on a vegetable serving set. During his career, Georg Jensen designed thirteen flat- ware pat- terns; eight have names and five have only numbers. The include: Klokke (Bell), Antik (Continental), Liljekonval (Lily of the Valley), Kugle (Beaded), Rope (Pearl), Akkeleje (no translation in English), Magnolie (Blossom), and Nordiske (Viking). Twelve other design- ers also created nine- teen flatware pat- terns for the Jensen company between 1912 and 1981. The Acorn pattern, designed by Johan Rohde and introduced in 1916, is probably the best known and most popular of all Jensen flat- ware patterns. (This and several others of the original 33 sterling silver flatware patterns continue in production today.) The flat- ware patterns were given American names when the sales expanded to the United States. Sometimes, patterns were given other names that related to the country where the flatware was sold. For example, in England, the Nordic pattern was referred to as Hamlet. - Janet Drucker Editor’s Note: for more infor- mation on books by Janet Drucker, visit Schiffer Books online at www.schiffer books.com or Drucker Antiques at www.druckerantiques.com. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT

Peter Swift Seibert

One of the first jobs I hadwas as a tour guide in a his-toric house museum. It wasgreat fun, and I probablycould still give a mean toureven after thirty years’absence. One of the items onexhibit was a miniature blan-ket chest that we used toexplain was an apprenticepiece made by a budding cab-inetmaker to show his skillsin order to become a journey-man or even master.

I have to confess that thepiece always gave me pauseto consider. First, I wonderedwhy an apprentice or evenjourneyman would not simplymake a full-size item. Whatdid making a miniature haveto do with anything? Thetechniques and tools weresimilar, but definitely notidentical. What would thenhave been the use for such anapprentice piece?

Some years later, I wasgiven a tour of a private col-lection of miniature furniture

and it was explained to methat these were all salesman’ssamples. They were given totraveling salesmenwho then took theitems around topotential clients.Again, I was puz-zled because upuntil the Victorianperiod, local shopsproduced furnitureand rarely wouldhave relied upontraveling salesmen. In fact, havinglooked at theaccount books ofnumerous furnituremakers from thefirst half of thenineteenth century, the clientswere almost exclusively local. The only exception was achair maker from Harrisburgwho shipped a large load ofWindsor chairs to theNeshaminy Valley.

About a year ago, I re-read a wonderful little essaythat talked about how weinvent great and grand storiesabout events in the past inorder to somehow make thatera look so much better thanour own. For example, thereis the explanation for cupolason Victorian houses as beingwhere women could go towatch for their husbandreturning from sea. So how

does this explain theItalianate Victoriana house insuburban Harrisburg that has

a killer cupola on it? Iknow…the woman had bion-ic eyes! Maybe the explana-tion is simply that the cupolarepresented a little bit of ele-

gance, some conspicuousconsumption, a wee bit ofbragging by the owner, which

is why they put it upthere rather thanassuming somenoble story aboutwatching for a lostspouse!

One of the mostwonderful treasuresthat I ever workedwith during my careerwas a miniature high-boy owned byCatherine Graeff ofLancaster County. Ithad been in the col-lection of Mrs.Lamont DupontCopeland and was

truly a magnificent object. Itwas a 24” miniature of a full-size Queen Anne toChippendale transitional high-boy of the 18th century. What

was its originalpurpose…surely not anapprentice piece, since it wasfully inlaid with the initials ofCatherine Graeff. Perhaps asalesman’s piece… hardly! Itwas a miniature commissionedby Catherine, or possibly herhusband, for the sole purposeof being a beautiful littleobject. It was a luxury item

that showed her taste. I will venture to say that I

do not believe there are many,if any, pieces of furniture thatare either salesman’s samplesor apprentice pieces. Rather, Ithink that before the CivilWar, they were truly minia-tures commissioned by folksas cherished treasures orgifts. More, next week!

What Are They? Mobilesare among the most whimsi-cal and sought-after creations

by pioneer fused glass arti-sans Frances and MichaelHiggins. From the late 1940sonward, countless mobiles, bowls, plates, candleholders, and other décor items haveemerged from their Chicagostudio. Many were producedduring a late 1950s - early1960s association with

Dearborn Glass Company. Mobiles are a prime

example of Higgins recy-cling. The unusually-shaped

pieces found on thetypical Higginsmobile are actuallyglass cutoffsremaining fromother projects, imaginatively repur-posed. The inspira-tion came fromFrances Higgins. Inthe early 1950s, shestrung togetherglass discards toform a hanging dec-oration for a barrenhome stairwell. SaidFran, “I just puttogether these extrapieces we had, andmade that mobile.Michael thoughtmaybe if we madesome more, theywould sell. So wedid. And they did.”

Why You WantThem: Their eye-popping colors andmodernistic design

make Higgins mobiles idealfor any home with a 1950’sflair, (or any dreary spot, likeFran’s stairwell!)

What To Do With Them:Hang them, of course!

What They’re Worth:Current mobiles begin in the$350 range for the smallest(15 inch); a full-sized vintageversion from the 1960s willfetch over $2,500 at auction.

Who Would HaveKnown? The array ofHiggins mobiles continues togrow, under the direction ofLouise and Jon Wimmer, suc-cessors to Michael and Franat the Higgins Studio. Thereare abstract mobiles; mobiles
