Wow, is it my turn again already? Since the last time I was on these pages, the chapter has put on a number of great events, many of which I

was able to aend. The driving events, as always, were ter-rific, but I was most impressed by the recent Meet & Greet in Palo Alto, which was chronicled in a photo collage in the June Bombe. We had a strong turnout for this Peninsula-area event, and I think I speak for everyone there when I say, “It was simply a fantastic time!” I encourage all members to aend these types of local get-togethers put on by your Area Reps. (If you don’t know who your Area Rep is, take a peek at the Chapter Contacts page of any Bombe. Feel free to contact them with any questions or ideas you have about events in your local area!)

If you missed out on this or any other past event, never fear! We’ve got more great chapter events coming up that ev-eryone should consider. Mid-month is the BMW Festorics at the Historics Weekend (www.festorics.org), where GGC and Central Cal Chapter join together to put on three days of Bim-mer-infused automobile ogling. Central Cal’s Ultimate Clean Car Contest at Concourso Italiano on Friday will feature the first public appearance of Paul Cain’s Roundel cover car (July), the “3002il” (twin turbo injected lightweight). This is an 02 that has to be seen to be believed!

Saturday and Sunday, GGC opens up the gates to registered members at the premiere viewing spot atop the Turn Five shelf at the Monterey Historic Races. The Satur-day banquet should prove to be another exciting event with appearances by Bobby Rahal, Tom Purves (BMW NA CEO), and Michael Ganal (BMW AG board member and head of worldwide marketing). The Festorics is always a memorable weekend worth checking out.

But I’m personally most excited about the upcoming driv-ing school at Thunderhill at the end of this month. Thunder-hill is a great track for beginners and hot-shoes alike, as it is very safe with lots of smooth run-off areas. It offers a layout that’s easy to learn, but still challenging for experienced track junkies. GGC’s driving schools are taught by some of the best instructors in the nation, so it’s really a bargain over the pro-fessional schools that are out there. If you’ve been thinking about aending a track school, I highly encourage you to sign up for the August 26-27 Thunderhill school. I promise you’ll have a blast!

And if the idea of a high-performance driving event doesn’t get your pulse racing, you’re always welcome to aend one of our board meetings, which are open to all mem-bers. They, too, are safe for beginners and experts alike… though sometimes the runoff areas aren’t so smooth.

Cheers,Jonathan

Wine Country Motorsports Helmet DiscountWine Country Motorsports at Sears Point has agreed to

provide a 10% discount on ANY helmet they carry, plus a free helmet bag, to any Pacific Region BMW CCA member. Wine Country will happily ship for you if you know brand and size. If you are not replacing an existing helmet, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you visit their store in person. Fit is critical for safety when it comes to helmets. This offer, good through December 31, 2006, extends to any member in good standing in any chapter of the Pacific Region BMW CCA. Basically, any CCA member is eligible, so CCC instructors, autocrossers, driving school students, etc can all take advan-tage of this program. Please note that Wine Country is really stepping up here. Before this, they’ve NEVER discounted their helmets due to their slim margins. Please keep this in mind when other members ask you where they should get their helmet. We need to support Wine Country like they are supporting us! Wine Country is NOT checking for BMW CCA member IDs, so the honor system applies here. Let’s make sure we don’t abuse their generosity. We’d like to give a BIG THANKS to Wine Country for supporting us! Next time you’re at Sears Point, please stop in and thank them yourself! When calling or visiting, please ask for the “BMW Club 10% discount and free helmet bag.”

Updated X3 for 2007… BMW is massaging its X3 ute for the ’07 model year, applying subtle design updates in addi-tion to ramping-up engine power.

Power for the North American X3 3.0si will come from a revised, 3.0-liter engine, which produces 260 hp at 6,600 rpm and 225 lb- of torque at 2,500 rpm, an increase of 35 horse-power and 11 lb- of torque over the previous 3.0-liter. The vehicle will be offered with a six-speed manual as standard equipment and a new six-speed steptronic automatic trans-mission will be offered as a no cost option.

With the six-speed manual, the X3 3.0si accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds, an improvement of 0.7 seconds over the previous X3 3.0i. With the new six-speed automatic, the X3 3.0si goes from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds, a 0.8 second improvement.

Design changes include: a larger kidney grille; a rede-signed front bumper and spoiler; a color-keyed spoiler and front fog lights incorporated into the bodywork. At the rear are new light clusters, color-keyed panels extending lower down the bodywork, and larger twin exhaust pipes. Inside, there’s a new three-spoke steering wheel and other materials enhance-ments. BMW’s dynamic stability control (DSC) system in the 2007 X3 3.0si includes safety enhancements such as brake dry-ing to improve emergency stopping capability in wet condi-

tions and brake standby to aid emergency braking.

The new X3 3.0si also now includes BMW’s dynamic traction control (DTC) as part of DSC. At the touch of a buon, DTC waits for a higher threshold of wheel-slip before engag-ing DSC functions.

Prices and full specs for the new X3 will be an-nounced before its sale date in the fall. autoweek.com

It was also announced that starting in 2008, the BMW Championship will travel to some of the premiere golf courses in the Midwest every other year. The BMW Championship will be played in St. Louis at the Bellerive Country Club in 2008, return to Chicago in 2009 and every second year thereaer, in Indianapolis at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in 2010, and at a yet to be determined location in the Midwest in 2012. New Aerodynamic R&D Center… Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. announced today that a subsidiary company received a contract from BMW to construct and commis-sion their Aerodynamisches Versuchszentrum (AVZ), a new aerodynamic research and development center to be located in Munich, Germany. Jacobs recently completed the design of the AVZ, which will encompass an aerodynamic model wind tunnel, a full-scale wind tunnel, and a large supporting build-ing, providing BMW with a state-of-the-art technical facility to develop next generation vehicles. Officials did not disclose the contract value.

In making the announcement, Jacobs President and Chief Executive Officer Craig Martin stated, “This contract provides an excellent opportunity to advance our relationship with BMW. We have worked closely with BMW to design the AVZ to meet their current and future needs.” theautochannel.com

What? No Lapdancers?! Alert The Authorities!… BMW AG is being investigated on suspicion it may have used a luxury trip to Switzerland to influence public officials, Mu-nich prosecutors said. “There is suspicion that those people were invited who were responsible for the purchase of official vehicles,” said Head Prosecutor Anton Winkler. A BMW spokesman said the German auto maker is cooperating with the probe. The three-day trip in February to an area near St. Moritz included product presentations and a driver’s-safety training course, the company said. Two members of the Christian Social Union, which governs Bavaria, where BMW is based, have said they were on the trip, but as private BMW customers. The president of the Hamm state court also was invited, but rejected the offer and alerted prosecutors. The Wall Street Journal

BMW Leads Industry In Providing High-Tech Features… When it comes to offering high-tech features that enhance the driving experience, BMW outpaces all other marques sold in North America, according to the Telematics Research Group (TRG) Automotive Technology Index. In the index, which measures the availability of key telematics, driver assistance, and infotainment technologies across a brand’s current vehicle lineup, BMW lead all other brands with the top score.

In the index, BMW was acknowledged for offering the ultimate in helpful, high-tech aids. Integrated navigation systems with iDrive and Voice Command, BMW Night Vision, Park Distance Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Head-Up Display are offered as features—helping BMW achieve the top ranking. Entertainment offerings include Sirius Satellite Radio and HD Radio, iPod integration, and rear seat entertainment.

The BMW Assist™ system and services are included as standard in every new BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series model, and offered as an option in all other BMW models. Bluetooth® hands-free calling with speech recognition is included as part of the BMW Assist system. BMW Assist services include automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle recovery, and the innovative TeleService feature which automatically sends the upcoming service needs and status to the customer’s preferred BMW center. The service advisor then calls the customer to schedule a convenient appointment.

BMW Assist was also recognized at the 2006 Telematics Update Awards on May 23, 2006 as “Best Consumer Vehicle

Application.” The Telematics Update Awards, which are held each year in conjunction with the Telematics Update Detroit confer-ence, is the only event of its type designed to recognize companies’ performance and contributions to the telematics industry.

“BMW has been a technology leader for many years, as it is part of the brand’s positioning,” says Phil Magney, principal analyst for TRG. theautochannel.com

BMW Sponsors Talking TED… Once a year, 1,000 people are invited to the TED Conference in Monterey, California, to exchange something of incalculable value: their ideas. What happens there has never been shared until now. TED (Tech-nology, Entertainment, Design) and BMW today [6/27/06 - bv] announced they will team up to provide a ground-breaking, free video and audio podcast series of the best talks deliv-ered at the TED Conference. The public can download the talks—which will feature Al Gore, Bono, and more than 30 other distinguished speakers in a format specifically edited for a wide range of media at www.ted.com/tedtalks or at www.bmwusa.com/TED.

“BMW is a natural partner for TED because of their com-mitment to innovation, their nurturing of great ideas, and their history of supporting ground-breaking uses of new me-dia. We’re delighted that they’re supporting this project,” said Chris Anderson, curator of the TED Conference. “At the heart of TED is a belief that ideas can change the world. For years we’ve witnessed powerful, inspiring talks there. They’ve had huge impact on those who’ve heard them. Now, thanks to the take-off of online video and podcasting, we can share them widely for the first time. This is incredibly exciting. Each of these unique voices has the power to inspire, to change someone’s views, or even someone’s life.”

“BMW’s sponsorship of TEDTalks reflects the company’s deep commitment to nurturing great ideas and the indepen-dent thinkers behind them,” said Jack Pitney, Vice President of Marketing, BMW NA. “TED and BMW are both indepen-dent organizations, and we truly feel that independent think-ers and breakthrough ideas are the most crucial elements in shaping our future.”

“The main focus is to get these powerful ideas out into the world, these are ideas worth spreading,” adds Chris Anderson of TED.

Pitney noted that BMW has a reputation for being an in-novator in the areas that define the TED conference themes: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. BMW, as a leader in sustainable technology, is preparing the paradigm shi for a regenerative hydrogen-powered world with its pioneering CleanEnergy program, which helped spark the partnership with TED. When it comes to entertainment, BMW also has a strong record in using podcasts and online videos (like the industry-defining internet BMW FILMS) to spread ground-breaking ideas. Not surprisingly, this is not the first time that BMW and TED have been affiliated—in 2002, Chris Bangle, the visionary BMW Group Director of Design, was one of the speakers at the conference. Made in Leipzig… At midday on June 16, 2006, BMW Plant Leipzig saw the 100,000th BMW 3 Series roll off the assembly line since production launch on March 1, 2005. The BMW 330i in Titanium Silver metallic was destined for a customer in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. This first major milestone was achieved ahead of schedule—impressive confirmation that the Leipzig manufacturing plant is living up to its forecast efficiency.

Daily production at BMW’s Leipzig factory currently stands at around 570 vehicles, with the body shop, paint shop, and assembly shop running on a two-shi basis. More than 4,100 new workplaces have so far been created at the facility to meet production targets, with 2,300 staff working directly for BMW and the rest accounted for by suppliers and service part-ners. Production in 2007 is set to be ramped up to 650 cars a day.

Vehicles produced at the Leipzig plant have so far been delivered to four continents—Europe, Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. Around a quarter of the cars have gone to customers in Germany.

In 2001, aer weighing up more than 250 offers from around Europe, BMW Group decided to build its new production site in Leipzig. Initial investment ran to some €1,300,000,000 (1.3 billion euros). The result is one of the most modern and flexible automotive production plants in the world.

BMW Plant Leipzig encompasses the entire scope of production, starting with body-in-white welding and paint application, to corrosion protection and cavity sealing, all the way to assembling all the interior features and final assembly, as well as function tests and quality control. E64 M6… BMW M announces the arrival of the ulti-mate 2+2, open air driving experience—the new BMW M6 Convertible. Like its Coupe stablemate, the M6 Convertible combines a 500 horsepower V10 and the seven-speed Sequen-tial M Gearbox with Drivelogic. It also combines the luxury and elegance of the 6 Series Convertible with true super-car performance—0-60 mph in about 4.5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. With production beginning this September, the 2007 M6 Convertible will begin arriving in U.S. showrooms this fall.

The M6 Convertible has all of the performance capabili-ties of the M6 Coupe in addition to the styling cues that clearly identify this car as the work of BMW M—the aggres-sive and functional front air dam, the light and open 19-inch wheels that showcase the large compound/cross-drilled brakes, as well as the tail-end treatment featuring air-diffuser and four round tailpipes. It combines it with the elegance and functionality of the 6 Series Convertible—the luxurious 2+2 seating, the generous trunk, and the multi-layered so-top. This rare combination will provide the open-air enthusiast with one of the most unique driving experiences on the road. BMW Press

Die Flusternde Bombe welcomes our new Bimmerphile editor Bob Vitkus. Bob is not only an admirer of BMW—the cars, trucks, and bikes—but of BMW the company as well...only good companies build good products. He’s owned a few BMWs over the years. His first BMW was a Beemer, a R65LS; followed by an E30 2.7Eta—the first six-cylinder 3er officially exported to the US. He and his lovely wife live in the East Bay. Their current Bimmer is an E36/7 M44. Any comments and/or suggestions concerning Bimmerphile can be sent to him via [email protected].

We are blessed in the Bay Area with our mild Medi-terranean climate, beauti-

ful surroundings, lots of cool back roads to drive, and a whole lot of BMW 2002s. Huh? Yes, you read correctly: BMW 2002s. Most of you Bombe readers are familiar with the ever-present 2002, you probably see one to ten in a day. Believe it or not, there are BMW CCA members in other parts of the country who have never seen a 2002 and have only heard the legend.

By the number you see on the roads of the Bay Area, you would think they’re either still in production, or maybe only recently out of production. So it’s not surprisingly that when the 02 owners in the Bay Area get together at their monthly gather-ings, the turn out is impressive. But when the Bay Area 02 puts on its annual Swap & Show, and stand back! You’d be amazed at how many 2002s can fit into one municipal park in Palo Alto.

The 2002 has always been an enthusiast’s car and not so much a collector’s car. Sure, owners collect them, but for the most part they race them, modify them, or just drive ‘em around. Remember, we’re talking about a car that’s been out of produc-tion for 30 years. [Other than the one-off that Mobile Tradition built this year. kk] So why all the enthusiasm for this lile car? It’s due, in part, to its strengths as a fast and sporty car that handles well, but can also tote bags of groceries from the store and transport a

backseat full of kids around. Own-ers and non-owners like the way it looks. To me, it has sporty and retro good looks; to most non-owners, the word “cute” suffices. It’s no wonder that this car put BMW on the map in the U.S. and is the model that popularized—if not introduced—the concept of a sport sedan.

The enthusiasm at this year’s Bay Area 02 Swap & Show 6 was brim-

ming, and the 02s abundant. Over 110 of the 125 cars on the field were from the 02 series in various conditions. The other fieen were 02 contemporaries like the 3.0 CSL, Bavaria, and other Neu Klasse BMWs. What was really apparent, is that these owners like to drive their cars; what you saw among the cars were daily driv-ers, rally cars, racers, and even show-quality cars—but absolutely no trailer-queens.

At this point, some readers may be saying, “Cool, but 02 series?”Before we had the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 Series, there was the 02

series. The variations within the series included the ti (touring in-ternational), tii (touring international injected), full cabriolet, targa cabriolet, Touring (hatchback), and Turbo models. The Neu Klasse also included the 1500, 1600, 1600-02 (a Touring body), and 1800s.

Not all variations were at the Swap & Show, but you’re likely to see most of them. Every year, the stars of the show are the

handful of 2002 Turbos that show up. With only 1,672 produced worldwide, we’re lucky enough to have a mini-mum of five show up each year. Yet the show isn’t just about the cars on display.

Once again, the Swap & Show reveals its pull in attracting rare cars... there are only about 50 Tourings in the US. This is the third time in four months we’ve shown you 02 Tourings at our GGC gatherings. Here we have FOUR of them together... Keith, where’s your little June cover car? But, it was an off year for Turbos, only five this time.

There are more facets to the event. Extremely popular among aend-ees are the swap meet vendors selling hard-to-get parts at good prices. Another araction are the tech sessions. This year, we were proud to feature Max Con-nover from Maximillian Imports in Maryland, as well as our two local experts Sean Casey and Chris Blumenthal. Hands down though, our top crowd pleaser is the raffle. Heck, who wouldn’t want to take a chance on winning coveted 02 parts or services to feed their habit?

Ultimately, the enthusiasm shines through in the smiling faces you encounter while walking around. Michael Dubois, who showed his ‘02, summed it up nicely on a post on the 2002faq.com web site, “Clean FUN, a family event. Reflecting back, it was the best car show I have ever aended!” This has been the prevailing aitude of the aendees of all six Swap & Shows, and we continue to try to make it even beer every year.

If you haven’t been to a Swap & Show, you should make plans for 2007. Each year, it’s the third Saturday in May, at the same park in Palo Alto. There will always be plenty of 02s on hand. If you don’t have an 02, you may end up taking one home… or at a minimum, you’ll take home the enthusiasm.

The event’s first three gatherings were held at the Blackhawk Auto Museum. Each successive year showed steady growth in participation to the point where we had outgrown the venue. The 2006 gathering set out to explore new territory with an invasion over the coastal range to Half Moon Bay for a day of sun and… well… coupes.

Lile did the Dorkfest community know that there was another invasion in the works. Our day

Welcome to the world of the Dorks. The mighty Z3 and M coupes control this world where it’s an easy decision to drive 1,700 miles round-trip just to hang out with some hatchback

addicts. Although not widely known, the ac-celerator pedal in these BMWs actually controls an intergalactic tractor beam, aimed squarely at the soul of anyone who dares drive them. Which might explain why a hundred people in fiy-three Z3 and M coupes were willing participants in an overly complicated lunch by the ocean for Dorkfest 2006—the fourth annual gathering of BMW’s odd, two-seater bread van.

bound to happen. Aer escaping the motorcycles, it didn’t take long to reach our destination of the harbor at Princ-eton-by-the-Sea.

Our overly-complicated-lunch outing continued by the harbor. Plenty of debates cropped up regarding whether or not the Z4 M coupe is actually aractive or if it is a worthy successor to the Z3 M coupe. As far as I could tell, the de-bates were never seled, but everyone certainly marveled at the sheer girth of the new coupe’s steering wheel.

Next, we steered our cars into formation to arrange the group photo. (Thanks to Kurt for once again being the “hu-man megaphone.”) As tedious as it was to illegally park 53 coupes altogether in a wedge formation, the result was well worth the effort. Many gigabytes of photos were snapped. I wish I had taken some pictures of faces since the effect of witnessing so many coupes bunched together was instant and total giddiness.

Group photo taken, it was time to pig out on some lo-cal fare. Car talk continued on during and aer our meal, of course! Alas, the time came for our event to come to an end, but the passion for the original Z and M Coupe shall always live on in our lile Dork universe.

Sco Barneson, aka MDork, and his wife Colleen live in the Bay Area with Kimber, their Labrador puppy. Sco has organized Dorkfest since 2002 and is reportedly a major Dork.

began at the ever-eclectic Buck’s of Woodside where our crowd could fill up on pancakes and coffee. Coupes began to trickle in from all points of California and the northwest ter-ritories of Oregon and Washington. As the Z3 and M coupes swarmed the parking lot, an unfamiliar shape—cloaked in Imola Red—sauntered in. The well-proportioned and ag-gressive looking intruder bore the mark of Zorro upon its doors. Yes, it was the recently released Z4 M coupe!

This newest of BMWs had a polarizing effect on the crowd—much like the original M coupe had upon its release eight years ago. Regardless of opinion, the appear-ance of this BMW NA press car was exciting for all to see.

Although everyone wanted to examine the Z4 M coupe, it was time to depart for our snaking trip over the mountains to Half Moon Bay. Every time I drive out there over High-way 84, I’m reminded why living in the Bay Area is horribly expensive. The incredibly diverse landscape, coupled with wonderful weather, makes for an ultimate experience… even if you’re stuck behind a pack of Hells Angels determined to go five mph under the posted speed limit!

We managed to stay together as a group, avoiding a massive motorcycle rally as well as a major bicycle ride along Highway 1. Wherever we were on the road, though, people’s heads turned to watch the Dork parade. Anytime you get thirty-plus coupes in a row on a public road, that’s

“Harold, I think you’re getting carried away here...”

For over two years, our Die Flüsternde Bombe chapter news-magazine has been faithfully

published by Commerce Printing in Sacramento. Commerce’s owner, Gil Cara-vantes, is a BMW CCA member and in his usual way of looking to give back to the club, gave us the great deal that enabled us to go to a color magazine. He and his team of employees have consistently sup-ported us and contributed generously of their time and energy to our club in both our and Sacramento Chapter’s newsmaga-zines. Gil always treats his employees as family—that’s how he sees life itself. In his words, “We all take care of each other.”

In June, a senseless tragedy struck the family of Commerce Printing. Employee Augusto Lopez was driving home late in the evening aer work—business had been brisk and a lot of extra time had been required at the office. When Augusto arrived at his family’s house, he was met by three kids on bikes who apparently wanted his new truck. Unfortunately, Au-gusto either resisted or did not take them as seriously as he should have. One of the kids pulled a gun and shot him fatally… right in front of his own house.

Augusto was a mere twenty years old at the time of his senseless death. Gil said, “He had worked for us the past two years since graduating from high school and was a reliable employee who worked very hard. It’s a huge loss for his family in more ways than one—he was also the main pro-vider.” Augusto is survived by his parents, Obdulio and Berta Lopez, and four sisters, Iraida, Gheima, Vivian, and Berta.

In the aermath of this tragedy, Gil and his employees at Commerce have stepped in and tried to help cover the costs of the funeral expenses for the Lopez family. Some of Commerce’s customers have also come forward with donations to help the family out. Still, additional help is needed.

While all of the money in the world won’t bring Augusto back, or right the wrong that has been suffered, the Golden Gate Chapter leadership wishes

to join in to help. We’re reaching out to Augusto’s family, as well as to Gil and our friends at Commerce, to offer condo-lences as well as support.

Our chapter is donating $500 to the Lo-pez family and asks that our GGC members consider contributing, too. While this isn’t a tax deductible donation, it is a donation from the heart. We’re all so lucky to have a certain amount of abundance in our lives, if we can somehow make it easier for a less fortunate family suffering with a significant loss, maybe we can make some small dent in easing the pain in the world today.

If you choose to help out, payments to the family can be made via PayPal (Pay-ment to: [email protected]) or by check in the name of Obdulio Lopez. Send checks—and a note, if you wish—to:

Breast cancer survivors cheered “Ten years, ten million miles, ten million dollars!” as they celebrated a decade of fundraising with BMW NA and the Susan G. Komen

Breast Cancer Foundation when the tenth Annual Ultimate Drive for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation kicked off in June at Hendrick BMW in Charlotte, North Carolina. Expanding the route even further than previous years, this year’s Drive will make a stop in Alaska for the first time since its inception.

Two fleets of specially-badged BMWs, decorated with pink ribbons and the phrase “10 Years, 10 Million Miles, 10 Million Dollars,” revved their engines for the start of the million-mile cross country trek that will raise over $1,000,000, bringing the grand total to $10,000,000 for the partnership. The money raised directly supports breast cancer research, education, screening, and community outreach programs provided by the Su-san G. Komen Breast Cancer Founda-tion, the nation’s largest fundraiser for breast cancer research.

“I am proud to announce that after ten years of the Ultimate Drive, BMW will have donated over $10,000,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” said Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW (US) Holding Corp. “Thanks to new developments in research and screening techniques, breast cancer patients have over a 95 percent survival rate if the disease is caught early. The road ahead looks promising.”

“Today is especially meaningful, as the Komen Founda-tion celebrates ten years of partnership with BMW,” said Cindy Schneible, Vice President of Cause-Marketing and Sponsorships for the Komen Foundation. “The Ultimate Drive has helped fund essential research and crucial services for patients, survivors, and their families over the past nine years.”

Tenth Anniversary Of The Ultimate DriveDonated funds will top $10,000,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as Alaska joins the 240-stop nationwide fundraising tour.

The Ultimate Drive ProgramThe Ultimate Drive is a grass roots

program that gives community members the opportunity to get involved in the fight against breast cancer. Developed by BMW in partnership with the Komen Foundation, two fleets of specially designed BMWs crisscross the country visiting participating BMW Retail Centers. For every mile driven during the Ultimate Drive event, one dollar is donated to the Komen Foundation to support breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment programs. The drive will continue through October 2006, inviting consumers to get behind the wheel and help contribute to the fight against breast cancer.

Upon completion of every drive, each participant adds his or her own name to the Signature Vehicle—this year, a BMW 3 Series—which becomes a living memorial to those who have lost their battle against breast cancer and a sign of hope and inspiration to others fighting the disease.

The program consists of a nineteen-car Eastern and a nineteen-car Western fleet each lead by a Signature Car—a 2006 BMW 3 Series. The Signature Vehicles are painted, as are the fleet BMWs, in shimmering Tita-nium Silver with swirls of pink ribbons.

As in years past, there will be an award presentation at each event honoring a “Lo-cal Hero”—a community resident who has made an outstanding personal effort in the fight against breast cancer. A photograph of each hero will be affixed to one of the two BMW 3 Series Signature Vehicles.

There is no purchase necessary to drive the vehicles in the BMW Ultimate Drive, and all proceeds from the test drives are donated directly to the Komen Foundation. All admin-istrative costs of the Ultimate Drive Program are underwritten by BMW separately and apart from the funds raised for this program.

The Miller family has been driving BMWs since 1984. My good friend, Mike, saw how much fun we were having driving them, and even

drove one or two of our cars now and then. But Mike was… um, frugal and always bought the least expensive car that would get him from point A to point B without being too terribly unreliable.

A couple of years ago, two things happened to Mike: midlife crisis and the E30 3 Series got cheap enough to fit into his automotive preference profile. So he bought an ‘87 325is and enjoyed it thoroughly for the next year. But it got totaled in an accident. To replace it, he bought a 325ix four-door five speed—the perfect car for Mike, since he volunteers most winter weekends with the ski patrol in the Sierras.

Even Mike’s wife, Alice, enjoyed riding in the E30 and Mike figured some day soon he’d buy her one with an automatic. So he took her to test-drive one. But, Alice told me, “I’m too short, and even with the seat all the way forward, I can’t reach the pedals. We might just have to buy a Volvo.” Now, our daugh-ter, Natalia, is shorter than Alice, and she has no problems finding a driving position that works. With this in mind, I asked Mike and Alice if they had adjusted the seat height.

Mike gave me this confused look like I was speaking a foreign language. So I led them out to Mike’s ix, opened the door and pointed to the side of the seat. “See?,” I asked, pointing to the lile pictures with arrows next to the adjuster lever. “There’s even instructions right on the seat.” (Pulling the lever up adjusts the seat back angle, while pushing the lever down adjusts the seat height.) Mike agreed that it would have been good to read the instructions for the car. We raised the seat and Alice slid in behind the wheel. Now it was too close! She slid the seat back a notch and announced that it was perfect.

So Mike thanked me for saving them from a Volvo. Hey Mike, it was all in a day’s work for an old Bimmerhead buddy.

Excuses, excuses. We here at Driving Events Central hear a lot of amazing reasons why people cannot aend a GGC driving school, autocross, or Car

Control Clinic. Let’s review some of our favorites and see if we can put the kibosh on ‘em once and for all.

I Don’t Want To Damage My Car. Good! We don’t want you to, either, which is why the GGC team uses its decades of teaching and event management experience to create the safest driving schools possible. Nothing gets our cadre of dedicated instructors squealing like lile girls faster than im-pending doom, so they work very hard to keep our students on the straight and narrow at all times. There’s a reason that the GGC driving events program isn’t sponsored by Jimmy’s House Of Body & Paint.

I Don’t Need To Aend A School; I’m An Excellent Driver. Does your dad let you drive slow in the driveway, too? Training is good. More training is beer. Driving on the street teaches people terrible habits, like fixating on the bum-per in front of you or singing along to old Hanson songs on the radio. Aending a GGC driving events program offering helps to undo the damage that Northern California commut-ing has done and gives a level of situational awareness that will keep you safer on the road every day. You’re on your own for the Hanson issue, though.

It’s Hot At Thunderhill In August. Okay, I can’t argue with this one, but Thunderhill Raceway has a niy air-con-ditioned building and the Best Western Golden Pheasant Inn—home base for the Thunderhill driving school for years and years—has not one, but two swimming pools. Talk about luxury! So slather up with SPF40 and come out!

I’m Not Interested In Racing. That’s fantastic, because we’re not interested in teaching racing. The GGC driving events program gives our members skills they can use every day, which makes all of us safer. You’ll learn to improve your awareness of what your car is doing and what’s going on around you, which can help you avoid an accident before it happens. The fact that it’s also a huge rush and will have you boring your co-workers for hours at the water cooler on Monday will just be our lile secret, okay?

I’m Afraid I Won’t Be Any Good At It. No one is “good at it” at the beginning—that’s why it’s called a school, right? But the reality is that no student is unteachable and everyone goes away a beer driver than when they arrived. You will be amazed at what you learn and how much fun you have.

Cars Are “Boy Stuff.” Well, that’s true. [Hey, wait a minute! kk ] But the happy corollary is that cars are Girl Stuff, too. The GGC driving events program activities are full of women, both as students and as instructors. And as a Y-chomosomed instructor myself, I can tell you that most of my best students over the years have been women. So, guys, don’t leave your girlfriends and wives and sisters and daughters at home. And girls, come on out and kick some Boy Bu! [That’s beer! kk]

Hard Cornering Gives Me A Rash. That’s what Calamine lotion is for. Next excuse, please.

I’m A Card-Carrying Member Of The Society For Pre-vention Of Cruelty To Tires. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but tires are genetically bred to want to be flogged merci-lessly for miles during high-performance driving events.

Each baby 185/60-14 rubber donut spends its nights at the tire ranch dreaming of power slides and four-wheel dris. It simply yearns for the time when, as a fully-grown 275/30-18 summer high-performance radial, it can spend its days on the ragged edge of adhesion before going to that Great Recycling Center in the Sky. Don’t be the one to disappoint these eager, young things, for a life lived in vain is no life at all.

High Performance Driving Is Against My Religion. This could not be more untrue! Many is the time I’ve heard a student call upon a Higher Power when faced with corners like Turn 10 at Infineon Raceway or the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that “Thou Shalt Not Apex Early” is the 11th Commandment—and it’s not a coincidence that most race tracks have an official chaplain on the prem-ises. Enlightenment is found at 7,000 rpm… tell a friend.

I’m Afraid I’ll Get Hooked Because I’ve Heard That Track Time Makes Heroin Addiction Seem Like A Vague Craving For Something Salty. Driving events will leave you sweaty and smelly and awash in adrenaline. But on the posi-tive side, your family probably won’t stage an intervention, although we can’t make any guarantees. So come on out and play. Everyone else is doing it. You’re not cool if you don’t try it. Come on, just once!

So now that we’ve goen those out of the way, it goes without saying that these excuses will no longer be accepted here at Driving Events Central. If you’re going to skip yet another event, you’ll need to come up with something new to keep us entertained.

Operators are standing by.Mark Dadgar is a life-long car fanatic who gets way too many

automotive magazines each month and buys Calamine lotion by the case. He is the founder of JustRacing.com and currently serves on the board of the Golden Gate Chapter and as the Driving Events Coordinator. As punishment for that, they make him instruct at Driving Schools and write a column for the Bombe. You can reach him at [email protected].
