PROGRAMME PART I

Southern Area Concert Band

Led by Darryn Wright

42nd

Street Overture — Created from the 1933 film of the same name

with music by Harry Warren, 42nd

Street premiered at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre on August 25, 1980, winning multiple awards including the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show became a long-running hit with success on Broadway and West End. Today’s medley is an arrangement by Marty Gold.

With My Swag — Composed by Sean Thorne in April 1988 and

performed as the overture to the Australian Bicentennial Military Tattoo, the composition is based on the Australia folk tune "With my swag all on my shoulder." The tune itself has origins in Ireland and America before its apparent migration to Australia

Serenade for Wind Band Op.22 — Originally composed in 1965,

Derek Bourgeois wrote this Serenade for his own wedding, to be played by the organist as the guests left the ceremony. Not wishing to allow them the luxury of proceeding in an orderly fashion, he wrote the work in 11/8, and in case anyone felt too comfortable, he changed it to 13/8 in the middle. The piece was adapted for wind band by the composer in 1980.

Shenandoah — Based on the folk song of the same name, Shenandoah

was composed in 1999. The origins of the original folk song are obscure, but all date to the 19

th century. In this setting, Frank Ticheli was inspired by the

freedom and beauty of the folk melody and by the natural images evoked by the words, especially the image of the river.

A Gershwin Portrait — Born of Russian Jewish parents in 1898,

George Gershwin (born Jacob Gershwine) was to become one of the greatest American composers of the 20

th century. This arrangement by John Higgins

is a tribute to Gershwin’s musical genius.

About the Bands

Burnie Concert Band was

established in 1986 in response to a need to give young (and older) musicians the opportunity to continue playing their wind instruments beyond the newly established primary school band “EMUsicians” (also coordinated for the past 25 years by David Turner).

The band started with a senior ensemble and has grown to include 5 separate bands – Senior band, Junior band, Adult Learner’s band, Junior Learner’s band and a jazz band called “Sync or Swing”.

At its peak the band has had over 180 playing members. It currently has around 140 players across all the bands – not bad from a city of 18 000 people! The band presents a biannual variety concert which showcases all the groups and plays regularly at community events and functions. This is the first interstate trip for the Burnie Concert Band and the touring party consists of players from all of the different groups and includes players from age 12 to 84

Southern Area Concert Band is one of Victoria’s premier

community based ensembles. Sponsored by the City of Kingston and based in Moorabbin, the Southern Area Concert Band has been

contributing to the rich cultural life for which Melbourne is renowned by providing award-winning quality music to the public since 1971.

This diverse range of people, ages and backgrounds is cemented together by our love of performing live music both within our local community and around Australia.

Incorporating four ensembles and with a music library consisting of a huge variety of styles from classical to movie themes and big band and pop, we pride ourselves on being able to entertain a diverse range of audiences.

Meet our Music Directors

Darryn Wright has been a member of

Southern Area Concert Band since 1998, originally joining the band as an alto saxophone player. After ten years as the President of the band, he moved into the role of Music Director at the end of 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement.

Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) since the age of five, studied flute in high school under the tutorage of Gerard Van Der Geer, and has been playing saxophone for nearly

20 years.

Darryn has performed in many instrumental and choral ensembles throughout Melbourne, has been involved with many amateur and school musical stage productions, and is on the executive of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association.

As a career music teacher from Burnie,

Tasmania, David Turner has been

teaching in the Primary and Secondary system for the past 34 years. He is the only remaining inaugural member of the Burnie Concert Band and has been Musical Director of the band since 1993.

David instigated the setting up of BCB’s junior program in 1987.

David studied tuba and education at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in the late 1970s and now teaches “everything you blow, hit or strum”!

David is delighted to have the opportunity to bring the band to Melbourne and is very grateful for all the assistance offered by Darryn and the Southern Area Concert Band.

PART II

Burnie Concert Band

Led by David Turner

The Lord of the Dance — From Riverdance fame and his own Lord of

the Dance stage show, Michael Flatley has made his mark as an entertainment phenomenon. The Lord of the Dance is the title cut from this exciting show featuring dramatic and energetic Irish/Celtic dance music. Music by Ronan Hardiman and arranged by Richard Saucedo.

Earthdance — In celebration of mankind's connection to our planet,

Michael Sweeney has created an extraordinary work for band using an intriguing array of composition devices and captivating melodies. Listeners are immersed in a simulated rainstorm, the sounds of world drumming, overlapping tone clusters and textures, and finally a dance of jubilation as the piece comes to a satisfying and rewarding finish

Mas Que Nada — Originally written in 1963 by Jorge Ben, this piece was

voted by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone as the 5th greatest Brazilian

Song. Today’s arrangement is by Michael Brown.

Skyfall — James Bond and Adele have teamed up to become the biggest

names in the pop world today. The movie is a box office smash and Adele's main theme is at the top of the pop charts, an explosive combination that has taken the world by storm! With music by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth, today’s arrangement is by Jay Bocook.

Adele in Concert — Adele Laurie Blue Adkins MBE, better known simply

as Adele, is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist. Adele was offered a recording contract from XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo on MySpace in 2006. Today’s medley of Adele’s music was arranged by Michael Brown.

I’m Shipping Up to Boston — With lyrics by folk singer Woody

Guthrie and music written by the Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys, the original was certified as platinum in 2006 and sold over 1,044,000 digital copies without ever entering the hot 100 chart. Today’s arrangement is by Sean O’Lauchlan.

Zoot Suit Riot — written by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ frontman and

vocalist Steve Perry for the band’s 1997 album of the same name, this piece was first issued as a single in October 1997 before becoming one of the most popular singles of the short-lived swing revival of the late 1990s.

INTERVAL There will be a twenty minute interval so please join us for a cuppa and a chat.

PART III Combined Concert Band

Music from Carmina Burana — Composed by Carl Orff in

1935, today’s presentation is of Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi extracted from the original cantata of around 90 minutes. The text of the full cantata is based on 24 poems dating from the 11

th and 12

th century covering an

ageless range of topics including the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the ephemeral nature of life, the joy of the return of spring, and the pleasures and perils of

drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust. Of course, it may be better known to many of our audience as the big beer ad theme. Today’s performance, arranged by Jay Bocook, will be conducted by David Turner.

Lord of the Rings — Written in 1987, Johan de Meij’s first

symphony Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien — a book which has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The original symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. In 1989, the piece was awarded first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition

Competition in Chicago, and a year later was awarded by the Dutch Composers Fund. In today’s performance, Paul Lavender’s arrangement has masterfully condensed the original 45 minute work into a practical concert version. Today’s Performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides — Released in 2011 under the Walt Disney Banner, On Stranger Tides is the forth movie of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. With music by Hanz Zimmer in collaboration with Eric Whitacre, Johnny Depp and company are back at it against a backdrop of familiar swashbuckling melodies along with new flamenco-inspired themes. Today’s performance, arranged by Michael Brown, will be conducted by David Turner.

Dave Brubeck: It’s About Time — David Warren (Dave)

Brubeck (1920-2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer, considered to be one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. He wrote a number of jazz standards and his music is known for employing unusual time signatures, and superimposing contrasting rhythms, meters and tonalities. The Dave Brubeck Quartet literally broke the ice regarding odd time signatures, with virtually all music prior to the quartet’s entrance to the industry being based around the standard 3/4 and 4/4 meter. Today, the ability to play in all time signatures is in every musician’s repertoire. Today’s performance, arranged by Michael Brown, will feature Take Five in 5/4 time, Unsquare Dance in 7/4 time, and Blue Rondo a La Turk in asymmetric 9/8 time and will be conducted by David Turner.

William Tell Overture — Composed 1829, William Tell

was the last of Gioachino Rossini’s 39 operas, after which he went into semi-retirement at the age of 37, although he continued to compose cantatas, sacred music and secular vocal music. With the original opera in four acts, there has been repeated use of parts of the overture in both classical and popular media, most famously as the theme music for The Lone Ranger in radio and television shows. Today’s arrangement by Mark Williams features the first and final sections of the original overture, adapted for concert band, and will be conducted by Darryn Wright.
