This month our first Spotlight is on Benson Brothers Wrecker Service at 6689 Highway 24 North in Commerce. The President and owner is Jason Cunningham and his son’s Justin and Jake. This local company has been in business for 53 years and is growing and going strong. Jason bought this company from the original four Benson Brothers in 1988. They now have offices in Commerce, Sulphur Springs and Greenville. There are 14 wreckers in their fleet and they service all of North East Texas and some parts of Oklahoma. Jason told us they did over 8,500 tow’s last year mainly in Hunt, Delta and Hopkins counties. They are an approved AAA provider as well as Cross Country and offer industrial roadside tire service. Benson Brother’s equipment is able to tow anything from small vehicles to large tractor trailer rigs. They have equipment to aid farmers and ranchers as well as just about anything else you can think of needing a tow.

Their other locations are 1300 West Shannon Road, Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482 903 886 2765 and 6201 Highway 380, Greenville, Texas 75402 903 455 0504. The 1 800-Hookyou toll free number is going all the time. Their long time motto has been” 23 ½ Hour Towing Service “.

If you stuck in a ditch, buried up to the axles with your tractor, broken down with a dead battery or just can’t get your vehicle to get up and go, call Jason, Justin, Jake or any of the fine employees of Benson Brothers and they will be glad to help you any time. They are proud members of the Chamber of Commerce and we recommend this business to all who call. We are proud to have them as part of our community.

Spotlight on Local Businesses

Plain & Fancy Sandwich Shoppe is located in Commerce at 1708 Monroe in the Oglesby Plaza. The shop is owned by Sandi Wallace and Heather Salverino and the manager is Brandi Crump. They are open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday 7:30 to 3:00. There is a full breakfast menu as well as fresh brewed coffee every day, from muffins to waffles, biscuits and gravy with bacon. They also serve hot plate lunches with sandwiches and soups through the middle of the day.

In warm weather they have a great patio to accompany the great dining room inside the shop. One of the best kept secrets in Commerce is their world class catering. They can accommodate groups from 5 to 300 or more with finger foods, pastries, cookies, pies etc. as well as full meals at your location with servers and the trimmings.

This local business has been hanging in there with all the construction on Monroe Street for the last year or two and we are proud to have them as members of the Chamber and our community.

Take time and go by for a tasty meal or even a cup of Joe and show your appreciation for this great small business here in Commerce.

We are starting a monthly supplement to put a Spotlight on Local Businesses in Commerce. This is a random process and there is no particular order to this process. It may be a food vendor or a manufacturing facility but we want everyone to know who and how our local businesses are run and what services they provide. We will be accepting suggestions as we proceed in this process, so drop us a line and tell us about your favorite business.

Thanks-for-Giving is a new service project hosted by the Leadership Engagement and Development (L.E.A.D.) department at Texas A&M University-Commerce to help underprivileged families have the ultimate holiday experience. In collaboration with the Campus Activity Board (CAB), L.E.A.D. has selected a group of students to help identify local families in need and design individual care packages for each family. This is one of the many service projects offered by the L.E.A.D. department under a new umbrella program called Dare-2-Roar.

“The idea for Thanks-for-Giving stems from a desire to make a direct impact on the Commerce community,” said Adalyn Burger, L.E.A.D. department graduate assistant. “Sometimes with community service, you don’t get the opportunity to see how you made an impact. When you give to someone directly and personally, it makes it even more inspiring.”

Students will work with and get to know each family, while becoming familiar with their principal needs and design care packages accordingly. Care packages may contain resources such as food, blankets, energy certificates and more. On Saturday, November 15 students will present the care packages to the families as an effort to provide a holiday experience these families could not otherwise afford.

“We want to help our students to be well rounded leaders and that includes knowing what servant leadership means and what it looks like in action,” said Danielle Davis, director of L.E.A.D. “We not only want to teach but provide opportunities for students to practice these leadership skills.”

This is the newest addition to the L.E.A.D. department and features a variety of cutting-edge service learning opportunities for students to address the needs of their community. Dare-2-Roar strives to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to promote civic engagement. Each program is open to a limited number of participants.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Office of Hispanic Outreach and Student Programs was recently chosen as a finalist for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Star Award.

The Texas Higher Education Star Award was established in 2001 by THECB to recognize exceptional contributions toward meeting one or more of the goals set forth by the Texas higher education plan adopted in 2000, Closing the Gaps by 2015. This year the board chose eight finalists, including A&M-Commerce.

“These finalists represent the state’s most effective efforts for closing the education gaps that challenge our state,” said Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund A. Paredes. “The Coordinating Board is proud to recognize the people and the institutions that develop and implement these programs, as well as the organizations and others who support them. We look forward to announcing the winners in November.”

The 14th Annual Star Awards Ceremony will be held on November 21 in Austin, Texas in conjunction with the Texas Higher Education Leadership Conference. The eight finalists will be recognized at the luncheon on Friday, and the winners will be announced.

“We are delighted that the Coordinating Board and its award selection committee have deemed the work and efforts of the Office of Hispanic Outreach and Student Programs at Texas A&M University-Commerce worthy of recognition,” said Director of Hispanic Outreach and Student Programs Luis Franco.

In the spring of 2009, the Office of Hispanic Outreach opened on the A&M-Commerce campus in response to the university’s strategic enrollment plan to become a Hispanic serving institution. Since then, A&M-Commerce has marked its highest Hispanic enrollment at 1,690 students, recorded a retention rate of over 70% for first-year Hispanic students, been recognized as an “Emerging HIS” by Excelencia in Education, and the university has been identified as a “Best Graduate School for Hispanics” by Hispanic Outlook Magazine.

Fire Chief Jack Berni and local firemen were present at the City Council meeting this week to award plaques to the local fire poster contest winners. This Fire Safety Poster Contest is to teach local students about fire safety at school and at home. There were over 300 entrants in the event and according to Chief Berni it was a difficult choice to pick winners. Councilwoman Emma Martin sponsored this event for the City and was on hand to help give out the awards to the winners.

The winners from Commerce Elementary School was Caleb Winston, A.C. Williams: Mia Cardena, Commerce Middle School: Libby Blount and Commerce High School: Telsi Sorim. For their achievement the students will get to ride on the fire engine in the upcoming Christmas Parade on December 6 in downtown Commerce.

Fire Department Announces Winners of Poster ContestLess than a month ago, sitting in a pickup in front of City Hall, an idea

sprang up about the need for a way to communicate community events here in Commerce. One thing led to another and sign companies were called, electricians were consulted as well as construction experts. Local companies were visited to consult about financing and plans started coming together for a community project. Little did we know that the snowball would roll as fast as it did and now the erection of the information signs in Commerce is becoming a reality. Pledges have been made and contracts have been signed as well as materials being ordered.

Right now the pledges had grown to over $80,000 to erect 3 electric LED signs to be placed in strategic locations around Commerce to display information about anything going on that the public needs to know. This format can be used for Public Notices, Emergencies, Weather related events, Visitors information, School activities, City announcements, University events as well as advertising for local businesses. The sponsors of the signs will have their logos on the signs and the LED programs will run 24/7.

The sponsors for the signs are the City, Commerce Economic Development, the Chamber of Commerce, Texas A&M-Commerce, Commerce Independent School District, Ben E. Keith, Hydro Aluminum, Benson Brothers Wrecker Service, Commerce Veterinary Clinic, Fix and Feed, Cypress Bank, Hunt Regional Healthcare, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Alliance Bank, Fire and Ice Massage, Under Construction and County Line Electric.

The final designs and formalities of erecting these signs are in the process of being completed as well as coordination with the DOT for placement of them along or near roadways. Information about Commerce and happenings in our area is becoming a reality, so look forward to enjoying this joint project within our community.

The city council gave keys to the city to Farmers Electric Co-op, Churchill at Commerce, Under Construction, B&A Concrete, Texas A&M-Commerce Athletics and the Chamber of Commerce for donations received to erect the new scoreboards at Eddie Moore Sports Complex. The new scoreboards will be an asset to the updated baseball/softball fields at the sports complex. For the past several years Commerce has hosted quite a few state and regional tournaments at the Eddie Moore Complex and these scoreboards along with the new concrete walkways and pads will add to the appearance of the park. There is also advertising available for the inside fences of the ball parks and if any business wants to help they need to contact Parks Department head Ricky Harris at 903 886 1151 for further information. This picture is of the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce receiving the key for the Chamber’s participation from Mayor Ballotti.

City Council Recognizes Local Businesses for Scoreboard Contributions

Well Small Business Saturday is not so small any more in Commerce, Texas. Fire and Ice Massage, the Chamber of Commerce and some local businesses have engaged in a fun way to celebrate shopping and promoting small businesses by having a “Treasure Hunt”. 21 local businesses are on the Treasure Map and anyone who wants to participate should be at City Hall by 10am on Saturday November 29 to receive their instructions and equipment needed to traverse the treacherous trail of hidden gold. Welcome to a world of learning about local businesses and dodging pirates as well as finding prizes, gold coins, free gifts with a whole lot of fun. After the “Treasure Hunt” is complete there will be a meet at the Chamber of Commerce and there will be a drawing for prizes and gift cards. This is just another way to keep our dollars and shopping right here in Commerce and let our local businesses introduce themselves to the whole community. Remember shop Commerce first, then shop Commerce again.

When I think about Christmases past, the memories are of the red Power Ranger that our son had to have, which happened to be the same toy that every other 8-year-old boy in the world wanted; the year our daughter asked Santa to bring her brother home from the Army and he was able to fill her request; the year our youngest son said that he didn’t need to tell us what he wanted for Christmas, because Santa already knew; and the list goes on. We all have fond memories of past Christmases. Don’t let holiday stress force you into giving thieves a better chance to make your memories bad ones. Thieves love the holiday season as much as everyone else.

The following tips from the Commerce Police Department will help you have a safe and happy holiday season.• Be sure that the doors and windows of your home are locked when you leave

your home, even for a few minutes. Don’t display presents where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Hide them if you leave town. Keep the lights and a radio or television on so that it will appear that your home is occupied, even if it isn’t.

• When you will be away from home for long periods of time, use an automatic light timer and have neighbors pick up the newspaper, mail and even park in your driveway from time to time.

• Avoid leaving large empty boxes on the curbside for trash pickup, as they may indicate to burglar’s items that may be worth stealing from the home.

• Never park in a dark lot, no matter how convenient they may be.• Put packages in the trunk and make sure car windows are closed and doors are

locked.• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use checks or credit/debit cards when

possible.• Stay alert and know what is going on around you, especially at ATM’s.• Women should carry their purses over the shoulder and keep them closed or

zipped.• Immediately report any suspicious persons and activities to police.• Tell children to avoid adults asking for assistance or directions of any kind.

Adults DO NOT ask children for help!• Avoid shopping alone – shop with a friend or loved one.• Have your keys out and ready before you get into your car.• Remember where you parked your car. Even though this might sound

elementary, many parking lots are spread out over large areas. Being unable to locate your car can cause you undue stress and confusion that may present you as a better target to a criminal.

• It is not uncommon for people to try to take advantage of others generosity during the holidays by going door-to-door for charitable donations when there is no charity involved. Ask for identification and find out how the funds will be used. If you aren’t satisfied, don’t give.

Last but not least, don’t let holiday stress get the best of your holiday spirit. Crime prevention starts at home. Start a neighborhood tradition. Look in on neighbors this holiday season. Make time to get together with friends and family. Think about reaching out in the spirit of the season and help someone who is less fortunate or lonely.
