OUR LADY OF MOUNT VIRGIN, GARFIELD, NJ

April 19, 2020 - 2nd Sunday of Easter

“Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” John 20:19

Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, a new neighbor, a new work colleague, a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple “hello” and a smile goes a long way.

My Friends, BELIEVING

New birth, new life, good news! These themes run throughout today’s scripture readings. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the joyful early days of the newly born church, when members devoted themselves to instruction, the communal life, the breaking of bread, and the prayers. The passage from Peter’s first letter echoes that joy, and assures those who now believe though they never saw Jesus that their faith will lead to their salvation.

But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us to sober reality. Not everyone can believe so easily. Even an apostle can doubt this astonishing news of the Resurrection. Thomas couldn’t be a believer on his own. Having missed the Sunday gathering, he just couldn’t say yes on his own. But one week later when he was there with all the others, that made all the difference in the world. In fact it made him a believer.

Across the centuries, Jesus reaches forward to touch us today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Living God’s Word We are all here, every Sunday, and we are all part of the Body of Christ. It’s been said that it takes a village to raise a child. I’d rather say it takes a community of faith to raise a believer. It’s how we come to faith and stay in faith.

Loving and praying for you always, Fr. Peter

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL/EVANGELIZATION To Evangelize is to live out our Baptism Call! We must all make choices on how we act in the future. The Lord is saying that we should be wise enough to think about the consequences of our actions. To Evangelize: “Everyone who hears My words and does not act upon them will be likened to a foolish person who built a house on sand.”

Matthew 7:26

A Prayer for those working during the pandemic: O Lord, we ask you to watch over and keep safe those that go out to work each day. We pray first for healthcare personnel both in hospitals, nursing home and those who respond to emergencies, for police and fire fighters. We pray for clerks in stores, mail and package deliverers, public service workers, those who prepare take-out meals and those who deliver them, bank and postal workers, those who work in transportation, all radio and TV personnel, and for those that we may have forgotten. We remember that we are all brothers and sisters on this planet earth, and we ask for healing, strength, and the ability to live each day with gratitude. Amen

Charities and nonprofits are on the frontline responding to our neighbors and communities in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, but risk catastrophic damage from evaporating revenue, new and rising demands for assistance, and major disruptions in charitable giving. Tell Congress to act now and provide emergency aid to nonprofit organizations by expanding charitable giving and providing organizations with grants, loans, and tax credits. About the Gospel: Jesus’ friends discover that His tomb is empty on the third day after His death. They do not know where he has gone. Jesus appears to His friends and shares that He has been raised from the dead. His friends rejoice that He has returned. Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings to read this Sunday’s Scripture. Family Prayer: Alleluia! We are filled with joy that Jesus has been raised from the dead. Help us, God, to share our joy with others. Amen Question of the Week: How do you share the Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection with others? Life Question: What Good News have you heard lately?
