BOARD REPORT April, 2020 Dr. Grant Schmidt, Principal, Prairie Heights Elementary School ** same as last month Prairie Heights’ primary communication is through Class DoJo. Individual classroom teachers have their own page where they post pictures, videos and announcements. There is also a school page where we all post the same types of things. This the weekly data from April 6-10 showing just how much communication is going out. Mrs. Cheesman and I have been observing all e-learning classes everyday. The teachers and special education support staff have done a wonderful job of adapting to the e-learning environment. Attendance seems to be around 85%. The PTO has been planning for the upcoming BINGO for Books and Staff Appreciation Week. The current plan is to hold the BINGO for Books event virtually. Students can win $5 coupons to be used at the school book fair the following week – using social distancing by limiting who can be in the book fair space at the same time – similar to what grocery stores are doing now. Staff Appreciation Week will continue as planned on one day with a food truck for lunch. The staff will have to use social distancing. These two events can change based on Governor orders. As always … when we return to in-person school I invite each Board member to do a building walkthrough to observe the focused, wonderful work of our staff and students. Let me know when you want to stop by the school. In the last year and a half we have only seen three Board members visit our amazing school. I know staff would love to know you have each seen them doing their craft!

BOARD REPORT April, 2020 Dr. Grant Schmidt, Principal, Prairie Heights Elementary School

** same as last month

Prairie Heights’ primary communication is through Class DoJo.

HANOVER JSHS BOARD REPORT April 10, 2020 Mr. Tim McNerney, Principal, Hanover JSHS Active enrollment to date (Edustar) April 2020:

Well, who can say they prepared for this??!!! What a state of transition, challenge, and learning. As I have communicated with my staff many times to date, as we battle through these times of uneasiness, stay calm, keep your balance (however that works for you?), and know your purpose still lives.

I’ll start with our seniors. It’s keeping me from keeping my balance (I know, what a hypocrite). I spoke with many of our seniors before they left on March 13 and almost all of them asked one question, “ we’ll be back for graduation, -right Mr. Mic?!!” Of course I responded, “Heck yes. Don’t worry about it!” Little did I know. So you all know, and I have Dr. Schmidt’s blessing - we are doing a graduation for our seniors! Tentatively, it’s scheduled for August 15, 2020. I want to, and they deserve to, be honored for their legacies and accomplishments. Not going to be easy, but nothing is right now. I will do everything in my power to make this happen! As always………...stay tuned………….

At the JSHS, I have imported an instructional platform mandating video interactions. It is my opinion our kids gotta see you, as it were. They’ve got to have that “connectivity” right now. As a result, we are using Google Classroom. I actually took the weeks of March 3-13 in anticipation of this pandemic to prepare my staff with this platform. It is a national instructional tool (I had my staff at Jeffco use it with great success, hence my reasoning for import) we actually have been piloting at the JSHS this year in preparation for full transition building wide next year - pandemic or not. Yes, we have had a few barriers we’ve had to overcome, and this will definitely be a work in progress. However, I am confident with the dedication my staff is displaying (papraeducators included!), our kids will prosper!

Speaking of prosperity, in doing some homework across the state for eLearning models being implemented during this time of challenge - again, in my opinion, we are ahead of the curve. Our attendance at JSHS is averaging above 80%+ with some days in the 90%+. That’s

Page 3: BOARD REPORT April, 2020 Dr. Grant Schmidt, Principal ... · This the weekly data from April 6-10 ... based on our ICAP methodologies (Naviance induced) and personalized instruction

a reflection on our staff, plain and simple. I have Mr. Williams and Ms. Geoffroy-Suppes attending classes daily along with myself and Dr. Schmidt. Sidenote - gotta say - it’s so cool to see the kids!!!! We are utilizing our paraeducators as we normally would in supporting classes during class time (co-taught model I use), and our Special Needs instructor, Ms. Margolies is working hard in accommodating all the IEP mandates so we are compliant. Again, not easy, a few bugs here and there but we will endeavor to persevere.

Last Board report I stated, “We begin our preparations for our state assessments….etc” Things have changed a bit, obviously. Good news (gotta have some positivity right now!) - one of my platforms upon hire was to bring assessment relevance to our students, staff, and community. We have been working hard on this to the point where I had Dr. D. Brandom teaching an SAT prep class period 3 this semester due to student demand! In our junior class there are 13 students. I did not mandate the class. Rather, the teachers sold it. Ten of the twelve took the class. Yah, cool huh?! So here’s what I did as many of the kiddos are asking if they get to take the test regularly scheduled for April 14, 2020; CollegeDrive (my Future Day - October practice PSAT/SAT test day vendor) will be offering an on-line SAT test on April 14, 2020. Short timeline for registration (just got this Thursday), but so far the interest is there. And, I am inviting all our high schoolers (9th and 10th grades along with our middle school accelerated students) to sign up for the assessment even though it is SAT, not PSAT. I will then scale score these results (CollegeDrive assistance I’m hoping?) per grade level (i.e 9th & 10th grade PSAT) to get as close a benchmark as possible. Why so intentional with this? We need the data to drive where we are instructionally as a staff. This will give them a baseline for next fall. Are we going to get them all - no. Something is better than nothing, in my opinion and it’s free. Yah, again, cool, huh?! On that note then (I’m almost done - hang in there), I will be discussing with my staff today (4/10/20) on how we can do NWEA/MAP assessment the last week of school to offer the same (data to baseline for next August instruction). No, it will not be MSL evaluation related. I have already conferred with Dr. Schmidt about this and got his blessing. But, we’ve got to get some data to start next year. Stay tuned!

I am beginning to build our Master Schedule for next year. We have some very exciting things I’m hoping come to fruition. Again (lots redundancy today….), upon hire, one of my missions was to “Grow Hanover.” I have been working with my science department in diversifying how we address Grade Level 13 Readiness for our demographic. As a result, we will be offering science “pathways” for graduation credits this next year. Not like FuelEd. Rather, based on our ICAP methodologies (Naviance induced) and personalized instruction in the building, having students take science courses that meet their needs, be it college bound, vocationally, or career bound. Without going into too much detail right now, we will be offering (dependent on student enrollment - haven’t done that yet) Zoology, College Prep Zoology, Forensics, Marine Biology, Anatomy, Computer Programming (Python), Engineering, College Prep Physics, Pre AP Biology), AP Biology, Biology, Chemistry, and of course STEAM classes. Here’s where the “pathways” concept comes into play. For students not thinking about college for their next step, A Survey Biology semester 1 and Survey Semester 2 of Chemistry will be offered (as example one of the pathways). Meaning, don’t take “Survey” as literal, students will get Colorado Content Standards during this semester so we are compliant, but the depth and must knows of the aforementioned content standards will be addressed on a more relevance-based level to peak student interest and buy-in muchless to address knowledge take-aways.

Page 4: BOARD REPORT April, 2020 Dr. Grant Schmidt, Principal ... · This the weekly data from April 6-10 ... based on our ICAP methodologies (Naviance induced) and personalized instruction

Lastly, part of this also includes trying to get rid of the massive expense of FuelEd. If I can get our CTE Career Cluster model taught in-house (i.e. Forensics (Dr. Brandom), Programming (Dr. Brandom), Journalism (Dr. Sardi), Yearbook (Dunn), Sign Language (Bannister), Video Journalism (Dr. Brandom daughter).......just to name a few), and bring the learning back into our school while reducing the expenses - I’m going to do it, Dr. Schmidt has already blessed it. Lots of details still to work out, but we’re going to mix it up a bit and give er’ a go! Again (getting tired of this yet?), stay tuned.

Operations Report to the Board of Education April 15, 2020

TRANSPORTATION The transportation department continues to strive in providing safe and efficient transportation for our students. Below is an update on the department’s accomplishments and notable highlights that is truly a testament of the professionals working in this department that are able to accomplish their duties without a single accident, injury, or noticeable issue.

30 Day Mileage Report – March & April 2020

a. Bus Route: 7060 b. Non-Academic/Activities: 819 c. Maintenance: 197 Total miles driven 8076

Past and On-going Activities

a. Safe Transport of Students Our wonderful and hardworking drivers safely and efficiently transported our students and athletes to games and other Tuesday thru Friday evening activities. The total number of trips made for the month of March is 4.

b. Fuel Tank Repair Fuel Tanks are scheduled to be repaired/replaced under an insurance claim. The current estimated replacement/repair cost is $14,034. Awaiting estimates on several items and funds to be received from CSDSIP to cover repairs.

c. Privacy Slats To mimimize the view of our fuel tanks and as an additional deterrent for any vandalism or break-ins our team will be installing privacy on our fences. Total cost for this improvement is $700.

d. Operations Team Effort During School Shut Down We would like to thank our bus drivers for helping out in maintenance and custodial tasks during the school shut down. They have been helping in constantly cleaning and sanitizing the school as well as completing various maintenance projects.

Transportation Request

a. New Bus Barn The safe transport of the students is the main reason for this need to avoid the danger of tampering with the road worthiness of our buses. The current bus area also does not provide shade or protection from the harsh elements of nature which our area is prone to experiencing. Buses age faster than normal due to these conditions. A new bus barn is essential to keeping the life of our fleet longer which ultimately results in less maintenance cost and will save the District funds in the long run.

Board Report April - A.D. Info As all are aware, the moratorium for school closure was extended to the end of April. This directly impacts all of spring sports and there are and have been no practices, competitions, and student athlete to coach interactions as far as gathering for coaching and instruction goes. CHSAA, the governing body for all high school athletics for the state, is and has been working closely with both CDE and Governor Polis’s Office on decisions for what is best for all schools, districts, and learning environments. Until new guidelines and directives come out from CDE and the Governor’s Office, CHSAA will follow along with and abide by the direction provided. My role has shifted in this new world of education and instruction and I have been monitoring and assisting our teachers and staff with the eLearning process. I have access to the JSHS Staff member’s classrooms and I spend time listening in and monitoring the progress of how the instruction is going. Because of my access to the classrooms, I am able to listen to the teacher provide instruction and ask questions as well as monitor the responses and chats that the students are engaging in during the class time. I have even had to step in as Dean of Students a couple of times and intervene with a couple of students that made comments in the class chat that were unacceptable. In both situations, the parents were contacted immediately via email and the issues were addressed by the parents. It was great to see the immediate support of the two parents in both situations. My interventions within the classes did not in any way disrupt or interrupt the instruction that was taking place. That is the beauty of being able to monitor the classes and the chats online. Along with monitoring the JSHS classes, I have been able to interact one-on-one with many of the staff outside of their instruction time to provide feedback on how their classes are progressing and how they are managing their instruction and the interaction with the students. I am able to provide them some immediate feedback since I am online and observing so I can send them a message and then we can address my observations after noon time during their office hours. After seven days of online eLearning, I can say I am pleased and proud of our community and how they have adapted to this change in the learning platform. Our students, staff, families, and community are resilient and have truly adapted and adjusted to the changes as well as could be expected under these circumstances. Also, in communicating with many of the Athletic Directors in the schools and districts in our Black Forest League, I have to say our organization, instruction, and what we are doing to provide our students their education through eLearning, is ahead of and above those around us. We have put together an amazing platform where our teachers are doing regularly scheduled instruction with their students for four days a week and many schools and districts around us are not as detailed in their platforms as we are. Yes, WE’RE HANOVER!!!
